Del Rey is a tapas bar/restaurant located inside the Villa Royale Resort. Limited parking on the street and very small signage, so easy to miss. The resort property itself is quite beautiful, but the restaurant was so incredibly dark, you really couldn't see much of anything. The small candles on the table just didn't cut it. Had to use our phone flashlights to see the cocktails and food. My wife commented that this is the place to come if you're having an affair...no one will ever see you! Intimate lighting is one thing, but this was ridiculous. All food review photos were taken using our phone flashlight, otherwise you wouldn't see it. SERVICE: Fatima was our waitress, and she was friendly and engaged, got the orders correct, but not as much follow up as we're normally accustomed to at other restaurants. Waited a long time at the end of the meal and finally had to ask someone behind the bar for our check. We were the only customers at that point. DRINK: Full bar. Cocktails were small and pricey. I had a Murciélago ($17) which was their version of an Old Fashioned. Interesting taste and a black tea ice cube. My wife tried an El Ultimo ($18) with strawberry, tequila, absinthe, lime, and mint. Refreshing, but ultimately not to her taste. We also ordered a Black Coffee ($4) in a very small cup. FOOD: Everything on the menu is tapas sized portions...no entrees. We tried: · Mejillones ($16): Spanish mussels, chorizo, tomato-saffron seafood broth, with rustic sourdough (loved this one; lots of flavor and sauce was great for dipping bread) · Bombas ($8): Manchego, potato, served with a Calabrian chili aioli (okay; we've had better) · Chuleta de Cordero ($16): Rosemary & lemon marinated lamb chops with a salad (disappointed, the salad was the best part of this dish; lamb chops were overcooked and a little on the dry side) · Pulpo ($22): Spanish octopus, black garlic, aioli, lemon vin, served on a potato purée. · Albondigas ($15): Beef & pork meatballs, agridulce glaze, preserved lemon ricotta, and Manchego (disappointed, as the meatballs were dry and not so flavorful) · Gambas al Ajillo ($21): Shrimp, garlic, brandy, brava, parsley, lemon, served with rustic sourdough bread (enjoyed this one: good flavor and sauce was great for dipping bread) Finished it all off with a slice of Torta Basque, a Spanish cheesecake with caramelized crust, mint, orange, and chocolate sauce. This was a lighter, different texture than regular cheesecake, but quite tasty. Overall, we felt the drink and food prices were expensive for the quality and portion sizes. What a delightful dinner! Del Ray is tucked away with a secluded outdoor patio that has a warm roaring fireplace, lots of twinkling lights and hedges which creates such a nice romantic and private ambiance. My hubby and I made reservation here. Little did we know it would be one of the windiest nights in the last year but the courtyard we sat in created a protective barrier for us and the other patrons of the restaurant. We started with some nice, stiff drinks. Then came the bounty of tapas we ordered. Our favorite was the Manchego Bomba. Think round fried cheese and potato balls sitting on a nest of aioli. Next up was the Coliflor. My god, the crunch of the almonds, sweetness of the grapes and raisins and the tang of the vinegar was the perfect bite with the roasted cauliflower. If vegetables could always taste this good. We ordered the Albindigos (meatballs) which were the hubby's favorite, Gambas al Ajillo which was my second favorite. Imagine roasted shrimp swimming in this decadently rich buttery garlic lemon sauce and soaking it all up with crusty bread. Last was the short rib only because the hubby thought he was still hungry. Stumbled across Del Rey on a late, quiet Sunday summer evening. This was supposed to be our one night out for the trip (we have a home in the desert and decided to cook at home all week). Almost everything was closed and I came across Del Rey on Yelp and thought, "I think I've heard good things on Reddit." It was already dark so it felt weird to turn into what felt like a residential neighborhood and park out front. Entered the hotel lobby and was greeted by two very nice people. First who checked if we had reservations (no) and walked us through the BEAUTIFUL courtyard/pool area (which were empty). The restaurant and bar were both nearly empty. We were seated at the bar (no complaints) and were greeted immediately. We started off with cocktails. Biscayne for me (yum! I wanted to try a drink on their menu with saffron) and a royale old fashioned ($30) for my partner. The Jamón Ibérico Fat Washed Knob Creek was a great twist on the drink. They cornnuts-like snack was to compliment the drinks with a punch of saltiness with a deep crunch. Having had a late lunch and snacked through the evening at home, we kept the tapas light. Started with the Ensalada de Temporada which was a truly top notch salad. We planned on stopping there but with how great the salad was, we couldn't resist ordering a second dish: Mejillones. I don't eat pork (by choice) and accidentally forgot to ask them to skip the chorizo. No harm as it wasn't the usual ground-up-meat but solid chunks - so was easy to avoid. The mussels were amazing . We couldn't stop eating them. Paired with DELICIOUS sourdough - yum! I asked them for additional sourdough as the serving of bread was way too small for how salty the dish was overall. They quickly brought some out (don't know if we were charged for it). Service was incredible throughout the night. It was one gentleman's first night on the job and a few others running around making drinks/helping out. Absolutely cannot wait to go back with a bigger appetite. read more

It's so easy to find things to complain about when society expects absolute perfection at prices that are exceptionally unreasonable. And then you come across a place like Del Rey. This review might come across one-sided because everything about it is right up my alley. From the design aesthetic, the vibe and the soundtrack (they were playing music from one of my favorite artists). The food is good, but you can read the other reviews about it. That's not what this review is about. The customer service is probably some of the best I've seen in a long time. To the management, I hope you're reading this because you guys have done a terrific job of holding a particular standard; even the small details of keeping waters topped off to the proper timing of checking on us... not during mid-bite. Our server was very intuitive and made really good recommendations; even recommending NOT getting particular things based on our specific tastes; not once did it ever feel like an upsell. I'm not sure if the gentleman in the front of the hotel was the owner or management but he was also very gracious in walking us in and even checking in on us during our dinner. I'm very impressed with this place and happy to see places with good standards still exist. We will be back. read more

Absolutely LOVED dining at Del Rey on Saturday night. I called last minute to snag a reservation for a friends birthday and they were awesome and able to accommodate us. The vibe of this place was great. Dark inside with booth seating, velvet chairs, 70's style gold veined mirrors everywhere, and cobble stone style flooring. It gives almost a speak easy vibe. The food is tapas style and we were not disappointed. We shared a few things between 3 of us and it was amazing. We had the charcuterie board, patatas bravas, short rib empanada, and the bruselas. Everything was so good! I love that they stagger the food coming out so you aren't bombarded with a bunch at one time. Service was good. Very attentive and nice. It's always a bummer when eating tapas style and empty plates aren't cleared for the next food item. But this place was on it! It was nice not having to fight for room on the table. Cocktails were amazing. I had their version of an espresso martini that they make with a house made cold brew. It was fire! Not too sweet like a lot of other espresso martinis. I went back to my favorite restaurant in Palm Springs and it was elite. The bombas, broccoli, whiskey sour, hummus, albondigas, and pan were perfectly crafted. What I love so much about their dishes is how much flavor and sauce are on every bite. The new dish I got this time was the steak skewers and it was the highlight of the night. The steak had a perfect crispiness on the outside and juiciness on the inside. The crispy onions, tomato's and chimichurri gave each bite a bomb of flavor and spice. It brought me back to eating steak in Brazil. Service was fantastic and our waitress paced the meals perfectly. Spanish tapas are often hit or miss for me and this spot was definitely a hit! We ordered pretty much everything on the menu and loved it all. The absolutely must tries are the beet salad, with golden beets and a light but delicious flavor, and the albondigas, placed on top of manchego and ricotta and a unique sweet and sour sauce. The chicken was also superb. We got the apple bread pudding for dessert and it rocked our world! Also ordered the chocolate molten cake which was ok but not as good. They put our party of 7 in this cute private area with heaters, fireplace and candles. Such a nice, intimate space and super safe during when dining during the pandemic. Came here for my husband's birthday dinner. The ambience of the restaurant is gorgeous, it's in the Villa Royale hotel. The decor is so retro and funky. It's a hidden gem and while we stayed at the Yara hotel this visit, we will 100% stay at Villa Royale the next. The service at the restaurant was wonderful. Our waitress was so sweet and bubbly, she was kind enough to compliment my outfit and give food and drink suggestions as well. She was absolutely lovely. We sat outside in the dim light next to the fireplace and it was so romantic. But why the 3 stars? The food was subpar. My husband and I are foodies and love trying new things, we were really surprised at how lackluster the flavors of the food were despite the listed unique ingredients. Also, the cocktail menu was extremely limited and honestly nothing sounded great. Unfortunately the two cocktails I ordered also were not that great. While cost is not an issue it's my personal opinion the prices were too high for such mediocre food. However the presentation was beautiful! Your first challenge when entering is to wait for your eyes to adjust to the pitch black setting with those LED candles flickering. It's DARK. Even at the end of our dinner with our eyes fully adjusted, we still had no sense of other guests because the place is so dark. And so loud. It was distracting and hard to hear each other. We really waffled on leaving but the photos on their website looked so good, and on Yelp and Google too. In reality the restaurant is 10 times darker than how they photographed it. It's like eating by Braille. And so let's talk about the food. Both my date and I walked out of that restaurant with distended bellies and foggy brains. We realized everything was sweetened / sugared. The cauliflower dish was covered in grapes. The salad dressing was sweetened. It's so easy to make things taste "good" when you add fruit and sweets to it- that's how you convince children to eat their vegetables. The food was was plated attractively and we ate everything we ordered. But when we reflected on the experience, we realized we would never go back, except to maybe have a cocktail by the pool after they've completed the remodel. Yeah, the lamb was a bit tough, the chicken a bit dry, and when we mentioned to the staff that we found the place too dark they said "yeah we hear that a lot, but you shouldn't complain about darkness when you're in the desert." So let me get this straight, you hear that a lot? That's when we knew. One last thing- it may be called Tapas, but it didn't taste like it. read more

Was in the desert with my daughter who is never happy to only drink at one place! We had dinner and drinks at Bar Cecil (see my review, a PS fave!) and wanted somewhere close by that were cold have the same craft cocktail quality. Del Rey is their sister establishment that is 3 min away by car. Definitely walking distance when it's not 110 degrees! The bar is in a hotel, which is super cute. You'd never know from the street. The bar is a walk past the pool and through a courtyard, we had to be escorted it's hard to find. Once we did, we felt like we were transported back in time where supper clubs and bars were king. Dark, cool (in temp and vibe!) and the cocktails were at the same time classic and modern. This would be a perfect romantic date or for a group that wanted to sip great cocktails in a beautiful room and be relaxed. This is not your rowdy or loud talking space! The bartenders were friendly and knowledgeable, and their booze inventory top shelf. We were just at Del Rey's Noche de Paella. It was our second time this year. The paella was dry and spicy. We have never had spicy paella. And dry paella is even worse. Our portion served by the chef had a flew clams and pieces of chicken. Mostly spicy dry rice. The arroz con leche or rice pudding desert was flavorless. The deviled egg appetizer was also dry and flavorless. I've never had such a bad meal in Palm Springs. We did not eat the paella. Left most of the desert and empanada on the plate. We got a sorry and "it's our version of paella" and paid $343. Extremely disappointed. read more

If you get a chance to visit this hidden gem, do it! We were there on June 2nd for dinner and it was fantastic. It is inside the Villa Royale Hotel which looks like a great place for a weekend getaway. Anyway, everything we had from the Short Rib Empanadas to the Gambas Al Ajillos (our two favorites) was great. But don't miss the Albondigas as they were great. If you are anywhere in the valley it is worth the drive to have lunch or dinner here. This is the way we should gather for meals always. We were together longer around great food and drinks.
