I used to really enjoy this sub shop....it was convenient and tasty...but I am gnawing my way through a very blah philly cheese steak sandwich (as I type) and the bread is like moist cardboard...as a matter of fact, the bread has been quite bad the last few times I ate there, but was still really hoping they would get their s##t together. ...on top of this, the shop looks like it's a last ditch effort to stay open as they were out of a lot of things and the rest looks like it is a temporary fix... I grew up in Austin and my parents still live in the same house in NW Austin. We were such regulars of Delaware that they knew my dad's order and he was on a first named basis with the owner. There was a period of time about 20 years ago when I worked there. It's been awhile since I patronized a Delaware Sub Shop, but I was in the hood, it was lunch time, and I thought it would be nice. I was wrong. They don't offer a cold roast beef anymore - so that was a bummer. I went for my second favorite - A ham sandwich. (I'm not a fancy eater, can you tell?) I took it to go, and I wish I hadn't. Apparently, a ham sandwich consists of two slices of ham. That's it. The small sandwich came with two slices of ham on top of the lite lettuce I asked for and it cost me $5.15 after tax. I am not ye olde person, but 'back in my day' a Delaware ham sub was built with two slices of ham on the bottom, two slices of cheese on the bottom, veggies in the middle and two slices of ham on top. It was filling, it was delicious and it was worth it. Big disappointment, Delaware. I'm sad to see a long-time friend go south. Too bad. read more

Living in NYC spoils you. Every corner boasts a bodega and a deli, and if you want a turkey sandwich at 4am, you can get one sliced fresh and served on mildly stale bread. It was heavenly! While I no longer stay up late enough to entertain 4am cravings, I do miss walking down the street and picking up a sandwich. While walking there is impossible in my neighborhood, I love the vibe of this place. What's the vibe? Sandwich shop. No decorations or annoying radio jingles. They have a great meatball sub and a pretty tasty Italian sub as well. Also,ask for the hot pepper sauce/relish. That is a rare find here in Austin. It's spicy and wonderful! This place may not win any awards for best sandwich ever, but it's a really solid sub shop that's a new staple in my book. Also, really great service! I'll never go here again, and here's why: every single time I come, their employees are sitting outside the restaurant. They're smoking. There is literally a sign 3 feet from the smoking employees that says smoking is prohibited with 15 feet of the entrance. Fail. read more

Delaware Subs - Philly Cheesesteak! Lots of meat and great bread - Sandwiches Near Me - Austin, Texas

After my last review and visit, I hoped they would have improved some... BOY WAS I WRONG Either this place is going out of business and just prepping for it, or they are surely to be going out of business soon. First off, they get my order wrong again (it happens half the time I've come here). Which really shows they don't care on top of the fact most of the staff's personality here seems like they couldn't give two shits about anything. Second, I asked for a water cup and they pointed me to a stack of sample cups the size of shot glasses (no joke) in the corner next to a warm water dispenser... They used to give you a small styrofoam cup with ice. Now they give you something that probably holds 4 ounces of water. Looks (feels) like they cut back on the AC because there's literally none in there. I was sweating during my meal and I took the temperature while I was in there.... It was literally cooler outside than in the restaurant. It's August, turn the AC on cheapasses. Last but certainly not least, they did away with baskets for your food. In other words, they hand you the sandwich on a piece of wax paper. No container, no tray, no bowl, no basket... Just a piece of paper. Talk about unsanitary and also unwelcoming. This place has gone so far down hill that I cannot imagine them being open more than another 6 months. To any manager or employee that is reading this, if this isn't the case, turn things around or you will be out of business before the end of this year. I guarantee it. read more

I was excited to see that I had a sub shop nearby, I saw that they specialized in Philly cheesesteak and I was excited. I'm glad I didn't hype myself up for this Philly cheesesteak because I was a little disappointed. My sub was prepared pretty fast (I was the only order in the shop), I ordered the small sub option and it was a good light option. The mushrooms were wayyyy too salty but the peppers and onions tasted fresh! The meat itself was okay. What really disappointed me was the lack of any cheese inside the sub. The saltiness of the mushrooms ruined the experience for me in all honesty. Needless to say, next time I crave some Philly cheesesteak, I'll spend the 10 minutes going down burnet to my usual Philly cheesesteak place. read more

I've not been back to this location in awhile, but I liked them when I worked in the spicewood springs neighborhood. Best Bet - Go on fridays when then have the Italian Sausage sub special - it's only available on friday. Excellent sandwich. Completely worth waiting for. Damn Tasty even! From the Exterior and interior I had no idea what I was getting into. But damn I heard this was the spot to get a cheesesteak! Sure enough It was delivered into my hands and then into my mouth. I've got good news for South Austinites: Tucci's Southside Subs now have something very close to the "original" peppers they had when that location was a Delaware Sub shop! Please disregard any comments in this review I made about Tucci's in regard to the food; now EVERY bit as wonderful as a Delaware Sub, maybe even better! Please read my review of Tucci's Southside Subs. The menu is virtually identical to the Delaware menu, at least in the Sub category. And a few extras Delaware doesn't offer. You'll see what I'm talkin' about when you read my Tucci's review. Of course, it you live up North, the Delaware Sub shop on Mesa will do just fine. And they have another location up North, another kinda centrally loccated, and one in San Marcos (check their website). But none in South Austin. Some great new things are going on at my favorite sub shop around! Not only do they have the most AMAZING cheesesteaks, but they are now serving breakfast! You must try the philly and egg breakfast sandwich! What a great combination! They also have other great breakfast items such as pastries, muffins, cakes, and many others to get the day started off right! You can even get the italian sausage for breakfast! Did I mention YUMMY? I have been eating here for years now and I go at least once a week. A little more often now since I have breakfast as an option. Not into cheesesteaks? Well let me tell you about some other great subs. Think hot! The eggplant and chicken parmesan are two of my favorites! How can you not love a hot sub made with grilled onions and mushrooms? This place is a joke! Read the reviews before I went and heard that sometimes they might be out of things but thought no big deal if they are out of a special meat or something..... Walked in at 6:45 and before I started to order she said....".you might want to know we are out of BREAD". How can you be a SUB SHOP and be out of BREAD? HOW FUCKING HARD IS IT TO GET AN ORDER RIGHT?! I gotta wait 35 minutes to get two subs to-go (and pay $30 for it!) and you fuck up both orders? BOTH OF THEM!? Delaware used to be really good - I haven't been to one since the Parmer lane location closed - and I was so looking forward to having a decent sub for lunch. Not only did you get the orders wrong, but the bread was dry, no lettuce, nowhere near the amount of meat you used to put on it, and no cheese - seriously.... how the fuck do you forget to put cheese on a sub?! I don't eat inside here anymore since it's so dirty and I don't trust the employees to wash their hands before making my food so I ordered some a couple things of steak, American cheese and some rolls so I can make it at my house on my own. That guy in the back put the raw meat in the same plastic bag that he put my rolls and cheese....if he doesn't know that is a huge no-no I don't even wanna know what else he's doing back there and to top it off I got home and they gave me provolone instead of American. This place use to be the best but it's so run down, dirty and unorganised I think this was my last trip in there for good. read more

One of my go-to local sub shops. Favorites are Italian (like what I used to get growing up in NJ) and cheesesteak (which I like way more than the 'authentic' versions I've had in Philly). Breakfast sandwiches with peppers and eggs are also awesome. This is one of my favorite spots to get a Philly is Austin. They offer quality subs in a neighborhood otherwise void of good sandwiches. I usually vary between the steak and chicken, but both are worth a visit. The bread is key, especially when it is fresh. Call in ahead to ensure a shorter wait. I've sat for a bit on a Sunday afternoon trying to get a few sandwiches. Of course, it is usually worth it. The specials provide good incentives for other menu items, but if it is your first visit, stick with the Philly. read more

They have Tastykakes! Ah, who knew a factory-made cake in a plastic wrapper could cause such nostalgia for this former NE PA resident. I think this is the first time I've seen Tastykakes sold outside the NE. That aside, they're are a sub shop and even their peddling of imported snacks couldn't hold _too_ much weight if their subs weren't good. Today I grabbed their Monday special (Roast beef). Good roast beef. A nice, crusty roll. Spicy mustard, and peppers. At $3.95 for the 7" special, I'm a happy, happy customer. read more

I really, really like the Deluxe Italian subs here and the cheesesteaks cream the competition. I had great experiences at their varied locations before they closed, but am now limited to one location which is fortunately just down the street. At this last location I have unfortunately had some really bad customer service experiences. The guys that work there all seem cool until you get home with your sandwich to realize the cheese melt is lacking cheese. Another time the guy behind the counter was completely wasted and after waiting forever the sandwich was again messed up when I got home. This has happened three or four times and unfortunately has become so hit and miss that I have stopped going. I'm sure I'll be back but maybe should go when it's busier? read more

Came for the first time and thought I'd be getting a solid, quality, classic sub. Ordered the Italian Gourmet for lunch and it was below average. Ingredients were very average quality, very little flavor, and hard to eat as the meat sticks out of the side. Nothing appetizing at all. Thought I'd be back to get the Philly Cheesesteak special, but I'd rather just stick to ThunderCloud or Jersey Mike's. Not worth it. read more

If it wasn't for the bad service and the bad bread, this place would get more stars. I actually enjoy the flavor of their subs. I think it's the hot pepper relish and the Ms.Vickie's chips that make this place for me. I just wish they had a better bread selection (no wheat!) and that the bread was fresh. A lot of times it's old and stale. The people working here always make me feel old (and in only 26). These kids have messed up my order more than a few times and always seem like they either have no idea what they're doing or they just want to quit their job and go home. My only complaints are that there never seems to be a place to sit (or park), the tables are usually dirty, and I think they are down to one location in Austin. I called ahead for a work lunch and ordered multiple philly cheese subs. When I arrived 20 min later, the line was long, which I didn't mind. Once I reached the front, the guy pulled my order and I paid. I checked the bag and told him I was missing 1 sub and he instead it was there. I took all the subs out and counted them out loud. He then said someone else must of taken one. Anyways he rushed to get another ordered which took another 10min. (that's why I called ahead). I love Delaware because I love their Italian, but today I witnessed customer service that went above and beyond. An elderly couple came in behind me, both had walkers and were clearly regulars. The cashier was having a little trouble hearing their order and the guy making the sandwiches made sure they had it correct, got their drinks for them and put them down at the table, and checked on them multiple times during their meal. I was really impressed and it made me smile at his kindness. read more

Qualifications: 1) I lived five miles away from Delaware for nearly ten years. 2) I have judged two cheese steak contests. 3) I've been to Philadelphia. I've had cheese steaks at three places here in Austin. Texadelphia? Not bad, but entirely different from what I think of as a Philly cheese steak. Jersey Mike's? A bit bland. Delaware Sub Shop's cheesesteak is the best I've had so far. They grill their onions with the meat, which greatly resembles the Steak-Ums style strips that they use in the northeast. The bread? Excellent (and people who know get that the bread is very important). Both the sweet and hot peppers were familiar and welcome. One thing I noticed was missing that I have yet to see in a place touting authentic cheesesteaks-- where's the Whiz? read more

This place was surprisingly good! We ordered the Eggplant Parmesan with grilled mushrooms and onions, and the veggie sub--just grilled veggies and cheese. Both were perfectly tangy and drippy. I felt like I was eating at a corner lunch hole back in Boston. I'd recommend it. read more

Now this is my second review of Delaware Subs because well, frankly I'm a bit pissed off about how this franchise has been run. So much so that I have decided to recant my previous praise and instead let everyone know which way is up when it comes to this joint. The owner/founder (who looks like bizarro Dennis Ferina) apparently wants his business to fail. With the economy on an impending down turn he made it mandatory for the franchise owners to pay for a $70,000 renovation to add a sliced deli meat counter...are you freaking kidding me?! If I want high quality sliced deli meat, I'll go to Central Market or Whole Foods or even Mandola's Market. Requiring a slight renovation to clean up the locations and give it a better image would've been a good option but having spoken with a couple of the franchise owners I quickly see that this guy does it his way or the highway even to the point of failure. He probably thinks that Dick Cheney is a good person too. So, yet again, the Delaware Subs sandwich shop in my area closed its doors for business. It tried to stay open as Cali Jane's which had as close to the same product as you can get IMO, and I know Delaware's product. In many ways it was better and the perceived sacrifices were nominal but I digress. Good people trying to keep open a small business got shut down. I've also noticed that Capital City subs has emerged from all the hullabaloo. They are also close enough. Delaware Subs doesn't advertise in the Chronicle, so its never in the running for any local awards. Austin's best cheese steak is Texadelphia...? Someone should open a business that serves REAL cheesesteaks with Cheese Whiz, Amaroso rolls, sliced ribeye and fried onions, peppers and catsup err ketchup. Anyway, I love Delaware's cheesesteaks, but TastyKakes and a sliced deli meat counter isn't a reason to reduce your area coverage by over 75%. Especially in Terrytown being your only remaining location (that I know of) good luck. read more
