I've had occasion to come to this genuinely pleasant coffee spot a couple of times now since it's within my extended neighborhood. The space is divided into two sections. One side consists of a Euro-style prep area set up as an island surrounded by seating, and the other side provides a chill environment with a sofa and coffee table, a banquette and cafe tables, and a small counter and stools. All of the seating surrounds a covered baby grand piano. Usually populated with heads-down laptoppers, I've had my caffeinated boost from the $5 Cafe au Lait (Photo 10) or the $4.25 Iced Americano (Photo 6), usually with something sweet like the $6 Chocolate Chip Cookie with Maldon Salt. All of that has been quite satisfying, but I have been wondering who plays the piano and when. One of the owners is a professional pianist, but I couldn't figure out if there was a performance calendar since the cafe closes at 4PM every day. Apparently amateurs are not allowed to tickle the ivories which is probably a blessing in disguise. Oh well, that means you won't hear me rolling the keys like Bruce Hornsby on "The Way It Is". JK, I can't play a lick, but I can fantasize, can't I? COFFEE / SWEETS - 4 stars...smooth brew...as-needed calories as they offer lunch options AMBIANCE - 4.5 stars...stylish with an unused piano SERVICE - 4 stars...efficient TOTAL - 4 stars...nice neighborhood haunt but when does the recital start? Sunday, August 10, 10am, 2025: I'm so bummed! Walked all the way here to have a yummy repeat Avocado Toast experience. Apparently, the new owner took over last week & all the sandwiches are off the menu. Dento is now only offering coffee, tea, etc beverages & pastries. Got to admit, they served up a righteous flaky pastry, & my London Fog was perfection. There's also a beer bar. The baby grand piano in the center of the dining area has been replaced by an upright against the wall. The clean, comfy, modern furniture is still there, but gone is the carefully curated stylish tableware. I can't really complain because the new owner made a business decision aligning with the neighborhood. If you're looking for takeout or a place to linger over a newspaper or laptop, you are welcome here. I always wondered how such a lovely place survives in a sad section of Folsom Street. Then I noticed the cafe is next to Dore Street. (If you know, you know). Dento is still destination worthy. Support Local!

Seriously a hidden gem in SoMa! My friend took me here for the first time exactly one year ago, and I've been here multiple times since. The mango bingsoo here is STELLAR, truly one of the best ones I've ever had -- both from a presentation (look at how much mango they put in there and how they slice it!) and taste standpoint. The inside is totally charming even though the café is located in not the most beautiful part of the city (SoMa). There's a big grand piano and both table/couch seating, and the Korean husband/wife are really friendly and often around. The folks at the counter are also very friendly and happy to give suggestions for ordering. Drinks are just ok here, but bingsoos are a must order. Come here for great vibes, great desserts, and to support a small business!

A tasty Korean Bulgogi sandwich--slightly spicy and sweet, with pickled jalapeño peppers.

I've seen their sidewalk board advertising sandwiches every time I walk by the cafe, so finally decided to check it out today. I ordered the tuna & egg salad sandwich on a croissant; my husband ordered the Korean Bulgogi sandwich. Both were delicious. Large portions, too. Loaded with fresh lettuce and tomatoes. We'll be back.

Cute WFH cafe with a piano in the middle! They have solid wifi and inside is pretty quiet. This review is specific to the cafe part only but I would come back for the night life. BTW, their Korean Latte is just replacing the espresso shots with some Korean instant brew? My friend and I ordered: Iced Matcha latte ($6) 1/5 - This could be one of the worst matchas I've ever had; it was a super weak artifical green color and was just sweet milk. Hot Matcha Latte ($6) 2.5/5 - A lot better than the iced version but still not very authentic. Mango Bingsu ($18) 4/5 - I love how the mango slices wrapped around the entire bowl and they had extra mango slices drenched in mango syrup. The bingsu was fluffy and it had a second layer where it was more solidified. Tuna Melt Panini ($13) 3.5/5 - Solid and they use a thin white bread! Overall, the drinks were pretty disappointing but food was solid. Staff/service was alright; nothing bad but also nothing good.

Dento Piano Cafe is located between SoMa and the Mission district, along the busy Folsom Street. I took public transit and haven't attempted to look for public parking in this neighborhood. The sounds from the street and the coffee maker, along with others' conversations, echo throughout the cafe, so it's better for casual conversations than working sessions. . Mango Bingsoo (4/5): The fresg mango is sliced thinly, and comes with an additional bowl of cubed mango and mango syrup. The shaved ice underneath was flavorless but soft. Serves 1-2 people. . Matcha Latte: (2/5) You can tell by the color alone that the matcha was underwhelming. It's honestly just straight milk and green tea - there's something wrong with either the tea they use or their preparation of it if anything. I wouldn't recommend it.

Tbh, i'm not super stoked on this cafe. They get stars for the ambiance and space, but their drinks are seriously lacking. I got an iced latte, and and iced matcha latte. It's hard to find good matchas now due to the shortage and everyone hyping it up, but if you can't make a matcha that tastes like matcha, then take it off your menu. Tasted like milk. They did hand whisk it though which was nice. Latte was too milky. In general, I don't understand why cafes are giving you a large drink, with not enough espresso or matcha. Put it in a 12oz with the right proportions. Don't give me a cup of milk ): Super sad to also not see any bingsu on the menu. Also looks like they rebranded a bit on their IG as they don't advertise it being a piano bar and there are no photos of bingsu anymore. I'm just confused at their concept now. The bar stuff seems to be better from what i'm seeing , but it would be good for them to improve their drinks and to stop watering/milking things down.

I cannot recommend Dento enough, i honestly wish i knew about this place sooner so i couldve come more sooner. The service was great, quick, and offered some wonderful suggestions. Not going to lie when i got the avocado toast i was a little taken aback bc its not what it typically looks like. I can say hands down this is the best avocado toast ive ever had. Each bite takes you through sweet, savory, and sour; it was such a ride. Also the shaved ice is a MUST, im totally getting the strawberry one next time. The Ambiance was relaxing and soothing, i cant wait to come back!

this is a very cute cafe! you're lucky if you find a place to sit & do some work though. i needed an outlet & ended up having to trade on & off with another studier next to me lol. unfortunately there was no live piano music when i went, but it's still a very calming atmosphere. there's so much space in there, i almost wish there were more tables. the food is nothing too special, but it is good! i got the matcha cookie (very big portion for its value) & a latte but it was made with instant coffee and it just kinda tasted very watered down. i'm hoping to get an actual espresso drink next time i go.

Came by for a hot chocolate and loved the ambience here! The piano was closed (didn't ask if could be played), but there different sits, tables and what nots. Great spot to chill a little and enjoy a hot beverage. Seems like they also do piano classes. I Also learned they have Bingsu (Korean shaved ice desserts), but didn't get a chance to try.

Came back for the mango bingsoo! The fresh mango is delicious and super sweet slice thinly with an extra bowl of mango syrup if you wanted something sweeter. I really enjoyed the combo of the mango with the soft shaved ice which was milky and slightly sweetened as well. Perfect for sharing between 2 people!

    Mango Korean Style Bingsoo
    Esmeralda G.

We ordered the mango Korean style Bingsoo and it was delicious! The shaved ice cream was light, refreshing, and tasty and the mango served on top was perfectly ripe! The space is a cute coffee shop with a piano in the main space. The space was a little full when we visited and seating was a bit more limited. The person who took our order was friendly and was ensuring that the space was clean. Overall we had a great experience and plan to return to try the rest of their treats!

    Christine C.

Very cute, clean place with piano right in the cafe, although I was not there when there was a player. Service efficient. Cannot give 5 stars simply due to price, $6 base price for a regular matcha latte which was more than $7 after tax and tip, and was just a small 12 oz 'regular' size. I suppose I'm at fault for going for it but didn't realize it would be just such a small cup, since I don't normally frequent such places and indulge in pricey beverages.

Ask the Community - Dento Piano Cafe and Bar

Would it be possible to play the piano if a friend and I bought food and hung out? Classic piano like Fur Elise music?

Unfortunately, only hired professional pianists are allowed to play for scheduled live performances.

Luckily, my friend had already been to Iron Horse Cocktails, and suggested we go there instead. Walking down the alleyway it is located in was a nice getaway from the otherwise hectic union square atmosphere. Walking in was also a neat experience that felt like we were stepping out of the city into a tiny pub. We also really liked the atmosphere inside and the cozy upper floor that had an interesting mix of old paintings and woodwork, creating an eclectic feel. I got the We've Got the Beet cocktail with mezcal, beet reduction, ginger, fresh citrus, thyme and firewater bitters. I love mezcal's smoky flavors and was drawn to the combination of ginger, citrus and mezcal flavors in the drink. The cocktail was very good and had a nice smokiness from the mezcal, along with the kick from the ginger and zest from the citrus, creating a refreshing and tasty drink. My friend got the About Thyme, with gin, blackberry liquor, black pepper thyme syrup and fresh citrus. We both really liked his drink as well, which had an interesting kick from the black pepper thyme syrup that offset the gin and blackberry liquor nicely. While we only had time to grab a drink each, we were both very happy with the drinks and would definitely come back the next time we're in the area.

You go into a line and order entrees at the first station; but it's not clear which ones and some are precooked and some aren't.
