Wow, wow, wow! I'm already planning to go back! Imagine a thunderous and rainy afternoon. I'm sitting in an office lobby waiting on a friend who had an appointment, and I knew I was going to take her to lunch afterward, so I had some time to research where to go. YOU KNOW I came to our beloved Yelp and searched "seafood." The restaurant was a little hard to find (hidden gem), so I used a couple of different map apps to get us there. The location really reminded me of Alameda, California, and all the lovely boats and whatnot! The outdoor dining really caught my eye, because I love to dine al fresco, but due to soggy conditions, we opted for inside (not knowing at the time that there is also covered outdoor dining available). We arrived right at opening time, so we basically had the space to ourselves (though the hostess tried to cram us into a tiny little space that was packed with people). We picked a different table because we're grown, and there were kids right next to us in that cramped little space. (Why do hosts try to pile patrons on top of one another, anyway?) We did two appetizers: Loaded "Old Bay" Crabby Chips and Smoked Fish Dip with Baguette. The Loaded "Old Bay" Crabby Chips are loaded indeed and quite good in and of themselves. However, I don't recommend pairing them with the exquisite Smoked Fish Dip. The Dip is very subtle, creamy, and divine (will definitely order it again when I return!), and it provided a stark contrast to the Loaded "Old Bay" Crabby Chips, rendering them, frankly, salty. So, I recommend both dishes -- especially the Dip! -- just not together. Drinks! I indulged in Strawberry Isles! Deeelicious! There was no basil, but the strawberries were sooooo sweet! For our entrée, we went with a fish basket. When I think basket, I think shareable and bite-sized; fingers, like the menu says. Our server -- who is amazing and so patient, by the way! -- did advise us that it comes in fillet. And it did. Exactly one large, crisp, perfectly seasoned fillet, which was easily halved. Taste? Divine! Everything is so fresh! Since it's a waterside location, you can just smell the coastal life as soon as you get out of the car. Powerful and intoxicating! Can't wait to go back! Thank you! (I gather this was recently re-opened as of 6 months ago? Very nice!!) Oh, and the hushpuppies, which I am generally not a fan of, were interestingly sweet! I liked them. This has been our best meal in Savannah so far. I would rate this 10 stars. The shrimp was so fresh and delicious and seasoned perfectly.....subtle so that the taste of the shrimp comes through yet definitely there. The potato salad was freshly prepared and not sweet. The slaw was also fresh with no old sulfuric taste that you can get with some. If you plan to come here understand what this place is. The menu is simple. The night we were there it was shrimp or crab legs and they are steamed and you order by the half pound. If you are looking for fried platters or a lot of choices for a big group, this is not your place. The shrimp is the star here and you have the perfect accouterments-a few fresh sides, beer and cold air conditioning. Oh and key lime pie and cheesecake. We took some key lime pie home and it was also delicious. Our only mistake was not ordering more shrimp which we will do next time. The server was very friendly and efficient. Mediocre at best. We were excited to come here because of the recommendation of a friend. The "hole-in-the-wall" appearance next to the water was very appealing to us. We entered with high hopes! Newspaper on the tables and a view of the water was a plus. The staff was nice. The place was clean. Now I'm done being positive. My mom's deviled crab had to be sent back because it was frozen inside. My dad's shrimp salad was meh. The low country boil had overcooked sausage and undercooked shrimp. I love Savannah and I love this place. It's not fancy and doesn't try to be kitschy or ironic. It's simply a seafood joint serving up what they have for you to enjoy off the beaten path of tourists. So the drive down the dead end road through the marina boat yards reminded me a bit of a bad movie, where the vacationers make a wrong turn and all get raped and killed by some disfigured harpoon wielding maniac, but much to my approval, we arrived safely. Let me start off with: The food was good. Not huge portions, but not huge prices either. Terrible beer list, which consisted of 4 domestics on draft and a handful of bottles. Server had to keep a written log of this extensive selection, which concerned me from the get go. She did a great job with our group, kept the beers coming and the food came out quick and good. Potato salad is the most oddly flavored concoction I have experienced in my short life. Low Country basket is the way to go, throw in some slaw and a few crab legs and this place is OK. Atmosphere: It is down a dead end road, and the owner reached over the table to turn on the 1996 Budweiser Olympic Neon to give us some ambiance. You want a flipping' great dive bar?? Bam! Newspaper on the tables-cool. My wife and I came to Savannah for our honeymoon and were looking for a dive with seafood. Bartender at a brewery gave us this tip. It's just out of town, Uber there from downtown was 10 bucks. This place was EXACTLY what we were looking for. Cool, simple, rustic and can't forget to mention CLEAN. Did I say CLEAN? Yup. Very. Snow crabs were outstanding, beer was cold, server was cheerful and attentive. It sits along the water, making for an all-in-all outstanding place to chill and have a simple and simply great meal. A nice place to come when you're wanting to focus on the person that you are there with. We didn't sit at the bar but that looked like fun too. Have not been to this restaurant in 20 some years. Will never be back now. Desposito's does have character (which is something I enjoy), but lacks in menu. Yes, the menu is VERY simple to say the least, and to pay HOW much for a pound of steamed shrimp (with not much flavor)!! The low boil looked and tasted as though they steamed the 1/2lb of shrimp, microwaved the potato, corn and sausage (hillshire I'm sure - yuck), and then just threw it on the plate. I'm new to type of cooking, but are they not supposed to be cooked together so the flavors meld?? Had to pay an extra $2 for a 1/2 ear of corn. Service was good. read more

Ah, Desposito's Seafood. Anymore, it might be called Desperado's. Mostly, if a Foodie's joint has gone Foodie's Dive (not in a good way), I won't bother wasting your precious eyes and growling stomach's with a word about a place gone passe' by the way or having spiraled out of Foodieville. However, I am taking some time away from my utensils, to type out a few comments, because this place, COULD BE amazing. But its not, never really has been, or at least in the last 10, maybe 20 years, and at the rate its going, it'll fizzle or go to the grease trap in the sky. Which would be sad for all of its location & historical virtues, but yet, where there's mediocrity in surplus, I have hard time finding forgiveness. As we Foodie's well know, the moment we hear of a place that either has words like "water side", "creekside", or "dock side" in its name, advertising or just in the word-of-mouth, our tastebud's tiny little ears prick up, for more information and we put the place on the top of our "Foodie Next" pile. And that was, and mostly is, how one hears of Desposito's, through people saying something about it now and then. It has no visible road side signs, and barely an arrow once one takes the weird turn off of Islands Expressway under the Wilmington River Bridge. And unless you know the eventual turn to the joint, one will most likely drive down the wrong road as you go. This isn't really a criticism in most cases where the end result, is fantastic, but in Desposito's case, it becomes one more item, lumped into the sorrow of its song. As a young art student, and burgeoning Foodie, when first discovering Desposito's, it seemed very novel and such a cool part of Savannah's Lowcountry. You know, a rickety building, near the docks (fresh catch obviously implied), old Coca-Cola signs on the place, and there was something legitimately intriguing about the place. Sidenoting for a moment, its always been odd, that its never had outdoor seating considering the view and being one of the very few near Savannah, not as far as Tybee, that could accommodate mature diners in an outdoor setting. This IS very hard to find in Savannah, many forced to go as far as Tybee or South Carolina to get it. Nonetheless, long ago, while it was still new to me, I was even open to their serving Captain's Wafers and cocktail sauce as a pre-dinner snack. But now, and even looking back, this seems -- well, just cheap. Ok, sure, maybe there's a great legend about sailor luck or something tied to it right? Well, if so, forgive the comment. But back then, when still giving the place a shot, I liked the newspapers on the table instead of cloth or regular paper, it added to the simple message of the lifestyle. The food was always pretty decent, if a tad expensive. Not sure what they were basing the extra costs on exactly compared to better places. But, the Alaskan King Crab, done well, flavorful, albeit small, deviled crabs, corn on the cob, marinated shrimp w/cocktail sauce decent, but KFC styled cole slaw & other sides, nothing to write home about. Foodie's are natural born sleuths of course, and 20 years ago, there seemed to be a mother & son "team," albeit, she struck me as more together, and what he was doing, not exactly sure. She's gone, by some years now, I would say, and I would equate the son's rise to rule as part of the decline. Just a Foodie Agent hunch. In a recent visit, I noted all of these photos of celebrities eating there, and photographed with and deduced that Michael Douglas, Greg Kinnear and others, have eaten far better and were just being nice as someone thought they'd enjoy getting some of the local flavor. Or sure, who knows, maybe the kitchen played it up for them. Last time I was in, place un-busy, we sat for 30 minutes w/no drink order, a bumbleheaded waitress sat others, served others their meal before us, gave us a little odd lip about it all, and nearly an hour later, the meal had yet to arrive, and as we left, they still charged us for the two beers we had. Foodies know, few restaurant crimes are greater than serving food out of order, especially with grievous lag time. Yet, none of the other waitresses, clearly seniored, stepped in, nor did the owner/cook, step out from the open kitchen 5 feet from us, and act like the owner, by addressing the situation. The Foodie message is loud & clear here -- incompetence, mediocrity and lack of overall love. Maybe just an off night? Not really. After giving Desposito's occasional visits for 20 years, I'd say that its never really "on" there due to failing or failed heart. Its like the little Foodie engine that could, but never did. Will someone give it the shove or come to her rescue? Foodies always, always, have hope for places like this with all of the history & setting, but the whole enterprise will have to be rewired if it is to choose to go uphill. read more

Make sure you call before you go, they'll close the restaurant early if they think nobody will show up (which we did). Our dinner experience was the absolute worst I have ever had in my life. We were hoping for a restaurant that provided great food at a reasonable cost, without much concern for fancy atmosphere. Instead, we received $70 of overpriced food (for four people) that amounted to little over one serving. We all left very hungry. Moreover, when we politely asked for a few slices of bread to help stretch out the meal, we were charged 50 cents per slice of plain white bread. The bandana-wearing, assault weapon on his tee-shirt owner-who prepared the food-had no trouble telling us, in so many words, "If you don't like it, hit the road." Are you kidding me? This place looks like a makeshift shanty. The room I ate in was illuminated by neon beer signs - seriously there are no lights on the closed porch. BUT I'd been here before and wasn't afraid of the understated restaurant and easy-going laid-back staff. The shell food is fresh, everything is steamed or broiled, NOTHING is fried so don't bother asking. The low country boil is bland but it comes with their own dipping sauce. The owner doesn't advertise and locals won't tell you about it but you'll get a great meal without fuss or pomp. You bring the atmosphere, come hungry, and call ahead to make sure they haven't run out of food. Oh and use your GPS because it is hard to find. I gave it four stars because I had to ask for cocktail sauce and they don't have extra horseradish. read more

The atmosphere leaves something to be desired and it's literally located under the Thunderbolt bridge, but if you can ignore those two points than stop in for delicious chili, cold beer, and steamed seafood. When my child was 12 years old the cupboard was empty and he was hungry. Now he is a nice young boy and he is very good at cooking breakfast. So he looked into our refrigerator and he took a potato and he cut it up into small pieces and boiled it until it was done. He did the same thing with Half a piece of corn. In the freezer I had 10 pieces of frozen shrimp. He boil the shrimp. In the process of doing this he applied absolutely no salt or pepper or any spices to improve the taste of the food. I had some really cheap kielbasa sausage in the refrigerator. He put it in the microwave for a couple of minutes and had three small slices of it. This comprised his meal. When I got home from the grocery store he was so proud of his achievement. Tonight I went to this restaurant and I must say it was absolutely terrible the shrimp was old and it tasted old. It was simply boiled with no spice. I was serve the sorriest 1/3 of the piece of corn that I've ever had in my life. I was served half of a potato that was finally chopped and boiled and had absolutely no flavor at all. The three small pieces of sausage were a joke and I was charged $20 for this. They cook is the owner. Here's a terrible cook. Stay at home and have your 12-year-old or even you're 8 yr old Cook you the very same thing meal I had tonight. It would be better than this dump. Also their bar serves some of the lowest quality beer available on the market. Do not waste your time stay away from your place it is a total rip off. I ordered the Low Country Boil basket. The shrimp was absolutely the worst. Not only was it impossible to peel, but it was incredibly over cooked. We asked our server if there was something that could be done about the shrimp and were told she would ask the owner. After 10 minutes of wondering what was going to happen the irate owner came stomping in our direction ( with balled fists and a snarl ) and promptly demanded that we accompany him to the kitchen for a lesson in cooking. Then we were told that : the shrimp that he ordered was frozen and that everyone had to endure the awful shrimp because that was all he had. After telling us that all he had was crappy shrimp, he proceeded to tell our group of 5 ( including 3 locals ) that he has been cooking shrimp for 28 years and we didn't know how to cook shrimp and there was no way he over cooked them. The best that he could do was to take off the market value of fresh shrimp off of our bills. ( in the establishment it was a total of 10$ per meal ). I will NEVER go there again and will discourage anyone I know from ever going there. read more

Tonight was my last night in Savannah before heading back home and I couldn't be happier that I chose to enjoy a wonderful dinner at Desposito's. I started on the main course that I had ordered and quickly decided that I'd be ordering more. I ended up taste testing nearly half the items on their menu. The seafood was fresh and everything was bursting with all the right flavors. Besides the food being stellar, I especially enjoyed the low country atmosphere and the terrifically kind people that made dinner an experience that will remind me fondly of Savannah. This place is not fancy, nor should it be. That would ruin the effortless charm this place exudes. At some point in the night, the restaurant owner's mother came in and she was as kind as can be. She made sure that everyone was enjoying their meals. I've been lucky enough to have traveled quite a bit. I've lived in big cities. But I must say, Desposito's is quite a find as it excels in true Southern hospitality and fresh seafood!
