We aren't huge Italian food lovers but we had a gift card and knew this was a popping place haha. We ordered the fresh bread (which was kinda like a pizza crust- prob from their pizza shop next door). It came w olive oil and salt. Their dipping option was ricotta which we don't love and we would have liked to see a garlic oil dipping option. I ordered the cacio e Pepe which I had theirs at a wedding but this was INCREDIBLE. Perfectly buttery and cheesy- truly delicious. My husband got the steak which took a while to cook bc it's a lot of meat and he really enjoyed it. It was cooked perfectly. We tried their chocolate chip cookies bc we don't like the classic Italian desserts and they were eeh- cold and pretty bland so I would definitely skip those. They could also use more salt. Delicious!!!! Some of the best cacio e Pepe I have ever had! I came here because the reviews were so good and because people said they do half portions. I'm a small gal and while I love leftovers I was headed to the airport and hate to waste. You stand in line to order and it wasn't slow or crazy fast. The gal at the register was friendly and quick and when I discovered they do NOT do half portions, she asked the kitchen if I could have a child size in light of the airport sitch which they did for me. There are desserts for sale right there at the cash register and I didn't have one but they were really nice looking. May be a good place to bring an impressive dessert For a dinner party. The pasta was perfectly al dente and the sauce was very cheesy. Served in a magical stone type bowl that I have never seen and that actually kept it piping hot the entire time. Game changer. We started with the fresh bread which came out warm and covered in oil and Parmesan cheese. I would consider the gnocchi and meatballs to be perfect. I think I am the last person I know who hasn't been to DiAnoia's so we chose to go to celebrate our anniversary! Good service, though it was almost 10 minutes before anyone came to our server came to our table. We had lovely cocktails - the Godfather and the Rose Spritz. The Rose spritz was like if you combined an amaretto sour with rose, which was sooo good. We had the meatballs and house bread. The meatballs were excellent, as we had been told. For our entrees, we had the veal bolognese and the spicy eggplant rigatoni. Both were good! The spicy eggplant is not that spicy, IMO, and it needed more salt, again IMO. Dessert stole the show. The tiramisu and peach and almond torta were excellent. We don't always do dessert out but it was well worth it. I'm always a little taken aback by prices at some of these Pittsburgh staple places but I do realize everything is in house. For the food - the Escarole and Beans were the BEST I've ever had. So tasty with great texture from escarole and sausage. Salt level was on point. I want another bowl!!! Meatballs - tasty! Would get again. Branzino - cooked to perfection! Crispy outside and flaky middle. So flavorful! Cacio e Pepe - flavor was spot on; just a little soupy. The cauliflower was a letdown. I landed in Pittsburgh and my wife was hangry and we were on a mission to get some yummy food in that belly. We were staying in the the Strip / Lawrenceville area so dropped a pin on the map to get us to that area and then we would find. As we walked up to the host desk to check in we kept seeing all these amazing plates. Asking people what they ordered. Place was packed but only had to wait about 15 minutes to get a table. Overall there were smiles and good vibes all over the room. We were sat at a high top since the dining room was fully reserved that night. No problem at all it was perfect. Now the food and service. The food I would say was 8.5/10. - Bread 8/10 - little pricey for bread with olive oil but yummy - spring salad 6/10 - real heavy on oregano. I enjoyed is fresh and tasty. Wife not so much - lamb sugo pasta 9/10 - cooked well and tasty - CREMA DI POMODORO SECCO - 9/10 - great homemade pasta and flavorful sauce. The service is where is fell short. The host was awesome. Super nice and friendly gentlemen. But we sat at a high top in the bar area and our server / bartender was just super busy so we didn't see him often and had to wait long period in between orders and to get the check and to take the card etc. was very nice but def would help to get him help or fix how the service works when sitting in bar area. read more

Coming from NY, we knew Pittsburgh is still up and coming city when it comes to food scene. This place is large and I am assuming jn the city with not so many great food options one can find this satisfactory, but even that probably only because of portion sizes. The food is barely mediocre. The focaccia and whipped ricotta were the highlight, but pastas and steak were horrendous. The clam pasta you could taste the wine, which means it was not burned off enough for proper flavor to develop. The tomato pasta with what looked like mafaldini was beyond lackluster. And steak was flavorless. Zero flavor, no seasoning, could have been eating a card board. By far one of the worst meals in overhyped place that one should happily skip. read more

I'll start by saying that I am typically NOT a fan of Italian food. I think I have in my mind that Italian food is simply pasta and red sauce and maybe a chicken parm or something... But let me tell you... DiAnoia's was a TREAT! I came here with a group from Pitt, so we had the upstairs event room, and it was a buffet/catered experience. The choice of cocktails was very good, and I ended up going with a Manhattan which was very smooth. For dinner we had a salad that was AMAZING. I'm not sure if it was the house salad or not, but the crunchy chickpeas were so good, so much so that I started buying these to make salads at home! For pasta, I went with the Cacio e Pepe - and I can't say enough about how cheese and pepper can taste so good. There's something special in their recipe that reminds you of eating your Nonna's traditional dishes. The shrimp scampi was also a treat, and I definitely overate. And there was so much food left over that they encouraged us to take home left overs. I took more salad and saved for a snack the next day, reliving the joy of eating it the first time! I live in the Strip District section of Pittsburgh, so we love going to DiAnoia's often. The reservations are often all booked up, but the insider trick is to walk in soon after they open and request a seat at the bar. We have been successful doing this many times. We prefer to sit inside, but they have an outside on the sidewalk with umbrellas also. The food is always the main show here. This time, we had the meatball app, Cacio e Pepe with added blue crab, gnocchi, and the delicious Cima del Prato cocktail with limoncello and basil in it. Chris is a fabulous mixologist/bartender and always gives very attentive service at the bar. He's funny as well. The staff run DiAnoia's like a well-oiled machine. We were so excited to try DiAnoia's because everyone raved about it so a group of friends met there for dinner. We had reservations for 8 and were planning to spend a nice night celebrating friendships. Well that sure didn't happen. They made sure to let us know that we only had the table until 8 pm when our reservation was for 6 pm. We thought that would be fine. Well when it took 20 minutes for a bread appetizer to come out and was 6:55 pm when our server took our order, we still thought we'd be ok. After getting our food 45 minutes later the experience got worse. We had to scarf down our dinners and were given boxes at 7:55 so forks were down. There was no ask for dessert or after-dinner drinks which we were all looking forward to both. Bill came promptly at 8 pm with no opportunity to get anything else. When the food takes close to an hour then you shouldn't be pushing people out the door. On top of it my shrimp scampi was all pasta and minimal sauce so further disappointment. The rest of the party enjoyed their dinners of bucatini and gnocchi so I must have made a poor choice. The other issue was that the place was so loud we couldn't even hear the conversation across the table. They really need to put some type of facilities in there to damper the sound. If you visit DiAnoia's for lunch, you order at the register by the bakery and then they give you a table number and show you to your table. My food came out fairly quickly, within 10-15 minutes. They have a great lunch menu with pasta, paninis, salads, and more. I ordered the gnocchi and meatballs. It was a great portion and the meatballs are pretty large. I did a walk-in and got seated at the bar, which worked out fine since the ambiance is super cute and cozy. The meat board was a bit underwhelming.The selection of cheeses could've been more thoughtful for an Italian place, and the meats were cut a bit too thick for my taste. Also, no bread or crackers came with the board, which was a bit of a letdown considering you have to order bread separately. But once the pasta hit the table, I was totally sold. The bread bowl concept was genius, and the pasta inside was absolutely delicious. My partner called it one of his favorite Italian dishes ever. I also loved all the drinks, and the coffee was a solid choice too. Service was friendly and attentive, but the real star of the meal was the dessert. The Zeppoles were incredible,warm, soft, with a light lemony flavor that just melts in your mouth. I really sat with this before writing, because I didn't want to just blurt out frustration. But honestly? DiAnoia's is one of the most over-hyped, underwhelming, and flat-out disappointing "Italian experiences" I've had in years. Let's start with the atmosphere: packed to the brim, no breathing room, and deafening noise that makes it impossible to enjoy a conversation without shouting. Add in the sweltering heat and a staff that looked (and acted) like they'd rather be anywhere else, and you've got a recipe for a miserable night. We arrived for our reservation only to be told we'd need to wait--fine, things happen. But "waiting" turned into 45 minutes at the bar, where we were reminded repeatedly that if we had been late by even 15 minutes, we'd have lost our table altogether. The irony? No apology, no concession, not even a breadstick to soften the blow. And about that bar... I don't usually call people out by name, but the bartender, Nammy, was genuinely one of the rudest, most inhospitable bartenders I've ever encountered. Watching her snap at coworkers over nothing while serving guests with visible disdain was both uncomfortable and unprofessional. It's hard to imagine why she's still there when she so clearly hates it. Do yourself a favor, if you hear that name- RUN!!!! When we finally sat down, we were greeted with fresh bread--which, I'll admit, was lovely. But the sad truth? It was the highlight of the entire meal. The cacio e pepe was watery, flavorless, yet somehow over-salted and under-seasoned all at once. A true culinary paradox. That gnocchi bowl? Glorified vodka sauce with a "meh" breadbowl- just go get a breadbowl from Panera and pour in some storebought gnocchi. Cocktails were fine, but nothing memorable. Our server might as well have been a ghost--barely present, completely disengaged. And dessert? A joke. An Italian restaurant with no gelato and no cannoli..... even though their own pizza shop next door has it??? Make it make sense. By the time the check came, we spent roughly $75 a head. We were left wondering why we hadn't just stayed home and cooked. At least then we wouldn't have been ignored by servers, barked at by bartenders, or stuffed into a sweatbox masquerading as "ambiance." Went on a Sunday night for dinner with family... From start to finish, we had a wonderful experience. The place was hoppin' as tables weren't open for very long and the restaurant was full the entire time - which made for a fun, lively atmosphere. For starters, the table got the meatballs (a must try) and the bread and whipped ricotta - all of it delicious and consumed quickly by our table of 6. From there, everyone had a pasta dish of some sort and ended up sharing food all around the table. It honestly reminded me of childhood dinners with my Italian family - which it made it truly special.
