Like American Graffiti's "Where were you in '62?". This place is one of those surviving 50's drive-ins with a time-machine menu, all cities are lucky to have a place like this if they do. A few tasty basic burgers and a chocolate shake and you are good to go (take a nap). No haute cuisine here and that's the point. Just off the freeway it is a must-stop heading east. Also please realize that it is indeed pure coincidence that there is also a chain of great little old school burger stands in Seattle called Dick's as well. This Dicks has a weird panda/koala bear hybrid on the sign and a very different menu. It is also over 200 miles away and overall so obviously not related. There are many pizza shops with Ray's in the name all within the city of New York and they seem to be able to tell them apart. The orginal Dick's in Spokane!! So many drunken unsuccessful nights I have spent here. So, this place is the last of good cheap eats in the world. The menu is a lot larger than the Dick's in Seattle with Chicken, Pizza, Fish, and the Whammy! The fries and burgers are unreal but the fish is very good too. As someone who didn't grow up in Spokane (the thought!), I feel I can honestly review this place. The meat is lower quality than McDonald's (preformed pink slime filler patties), and the fries seem to have been cooked in grease more than once before serving. People talk about the charming ambiance because Spokanites LOVE their homeless. It must make them feel more urban than, you know, people who live in western Montana. I read the reviews of people driving 40 miles every month or so just to come to Dick's. People who, when coming home to Spokane, drive straight from the airport to Dick's even before they visit their mama. Jess Walter referred to it in one of my favorite novels. This drive-in has been around for many years... It was a frequent restaurant we visited when we were children. I went here after many years basically for old time sake. Brought back a lot of memories You would think after being such a landmark in a staple in Spokane... That they would actually renovate and make the place better as time goes on. But the fresh french fries are good... The tartar sauce sauce is still good The hamburgers are disgusting... It's like eating dog food on a bun. It's like McDonald's from the 1950s. Dick's Hamburgers is a wonderful Spokane staple. It is an old place and the food used to be served by roller girls to your car back in the day. Now, you have to park and walk up to the outdoor area, so you will be outside while ordering and waiting for your food. There is some weather plastic and heaters for the chillier days. The Whammy is there 2 meat and 2 cheese burger on a squishy hamburger bun. This is their signature burger and should not be missed. They offer this 'orange' drink that is delicious, sort of like a Orange Hi-C! The fries are thin and crispy. The onion rings are some of the best that I have ever had, they are fresh and large pieces of onion and the breading is made up of larger pieces too give it a great texture and wonderful crunch. The shakes are very good and of a great consistency, not too thick, or too milky. There are always seasonal shakes and new flavors available. Everything on the menu is very affordable. Cash only! This is a wonderful place full of a very variety of people which always unique on its own. The hours very based on the busyness of the day. They will stay open longer if there is a flow of customers which is great for after games or concerts. Typically open until 10pm. The location is not in a terrific place just off of the freeway and there are usually homeless people just on the street corner panhandling. read more

I don't honestly understand why everyone loves this place so much. I'd heard a lot of good stuff about Dick's, and was visiting Spokane for work so I figured I'd stop in and grab some lunch. The service was fast, so that's nice...but it basically a generic McDonald's hamburger. Like the ones off the dollar menu. So I mean, if that's what you're in to, paying more than a dollar for a dollar cheeseburger, then this is your place. But for me...meh. read more

As a kid we used to stop by Dick's when driving through Spokane on our way to God's Country. As a Coug we used to stop by Dick's when in Spokane for whatever reason. Needless to say Dick's has been a part of many great memories for me and I love the place. The Burgers and Fries are the staple for a grub great meal but you also can't go wrong ordering the Fish and Chips or a Half Chicken to treat your tongue. This is an interesting place, I guess everyone should go there once. The service was fair. the food was interesting, not great. I ordered 2 whammys, one malts, one shake large fries and onion rings. I did not understand the additional charges. Greasy, Greasy, dirty parking lot The girl was putting onion rings in a bag with her bare hands. the shake was not mixed very well, had some chocolate coagulation at the bottom of the cup. Not as good as a wendys frosty. The whammy burgers have a very strange taste to them. the wait was outside and there were people panhandelling on the corner. believe it or not, a family was in line with children who had piecings and tatoos. Yes, tattoos, their boy was literally playing in the traffic. Dicks is a place I would never go to again. It is the next day and I am adding to my review. I often stopped at this place thinking it was the same as the franchise from Seattle. Not the case. Not a horrible thing. The last time I was there the burgers were sloppy and dry. The wait was about a 10 minute wait. The prices are good. For two cheeseburgers and two fries it was about $8 after taxes. Not as good/ fast/ cheap as the Seattle chain, but still worth the stop. If you're in the mood for fast food I'd suggest this over the nearby McDonald's or Jack in the Box. read more

Many homeless folks are always poking around asking for change and you feel like you need to grab your food and go as quickly as possible. I went here based off of the other reviews saying how good this is supposed to be. What a mistake, McDonalds is horrible but I would go there before ever going here again. I love Dick's. They serve cheap burgers and fries and taste amazing. Though over the years the quality of their fries have diminished dramatically. They are usually nice enough to give me a ton of sauce if I ask for it and such. Do not expect high end fancy dining food, this is not what this place is about. This is a great place to just come by to get some cheap, quick, delicious food and be on your way. Sometimes you just need a dirty burger and greasy fries. Dick's a Spokane tradition and the place to go to fill that need. A walk up window and some unsanitary picnic benches are about it. Most people eat in their cars. But that's the charm and its open late. Professionals, students, families and those down-and-out all unite at Dick's. They sell burgers by the bagful and true natives order a whammy five, fries and a shake. I go a couple times a year if I need it or not.
