Dick's is a lot more than a burger joint to most people. We lived hours away in Idaho, and Dick's was the reward for the long drive as children. The big panda on the sign says "Burgers Buy the Bagful" and it's not wrong. My dad used to order the #2's (cheeseburger) 10 at a time. Back then they were in the low $.60 range price wise. After growing up and moving to the Spokane area, Dicks became the late-night, after hours spot. We had impromptu car shows in the parking lot, and always watched the passers by. Being located just off of I-90 and Division (one of Spokane's busiest streets) there is no lack of "wildlife" and traffic. The burgers are the biggest sellers, obviously. Patties grilled on a well-seasoned cast iron grill from the 50's gives the flavor. A splash of ketchup, a pinch of diced onion and a single pickle are it for dressing. The Whammy is my favorite, 2 meat and 2 cheese and a bun. When you fight your way to the front of the line and start your order, look off to your right, and you will see whole, fresh potatoes being shoved through a fry press right into the fryer. Nothing fresher. The onion rings are the best I have ever had, more of a crumb style coating versus the typical beer batter tempura style most places offer. The tartar sauce is a must have. They started charging extra for it recently, but it's worth the nickel or two extra. Some standouts from the typical burger and fries would be the fried chicken meals. Lightly breaded and fried fresh with heaps of french fries in the bag. The chicken strips are always good. I don't eat fish, but others I know go for it every time. My personal soft spot is for the pizza. I know you may not think of pizza at a divey burger stand, but for around 3$ it's a hidden gem if you're looking for something different. Lastly, the Dick's restaurant in Spokane is NOT affiliated with the Seattle area restaurants, and that's a good thing. I have eaten at both, and while the Seattle chain isn't bad, it's definitely not the same. Many will (and have) argued that there are much better burger joints in spokane (Thrifty Scotsman, D'Lish, Zips, Ed's etc), none of them have that Dick's taste and charm (or lack of sophistication). Some argue that the nostalgia is better than the actual food. Maybe so, but I will recommend Dicks every time to someone looking for an inexpensive, fast and out of the ordinary meal. read more

Used to be a great place, but has gone downhill in many ways over the past several years. The food is still pretty close to the same, but the prices are most certainly not. There was like a night and day change, and I think it was around the time that Abe Miller past away. A brief biography about him that can be found online stood on the policy that he would prefer to make money by making 2 cents on each of a thousand burgers rather than making $1 on each of a few. That trend has shifted more toward the latter policy in recent years as prices have gone up, gone up again, and gone up again, and wait for it - gone up again. I understand that the economy experiences things like inflation, but the price differences aren't even marginally close to even consider the two as being related. When Dick's had outstanding prices and pretty decent food, it was a great place to go. -And occasionally, it still is a good place to go. But rather than going here every couple of weeks (or more often than that), I now go once or twice a year. You still can't beat the people watching on Friday and Saturday nights, but now days, it's best to lock your doors if you are sticking around to eat in your car, and have a secure weapon with a concealed weapons permit when you are not in your car. When the Spokesman-Review has headlines about things that have happened at Dick's Drive-In title "Police say slaying was drug related," you need to be a little more careful than your average family restaurant. Plus, now that the prices are in line or higher that almost any other burger place you could choose to go in town, I tend to spend my money on higher quality food served in a cleaner and safer environment with real tables and chairs. I started eating at Dicks when I was old enough to eat solid food in the back seat of the family car (multiple cars over the years). As a result, I have many memories of coming downtown for dinner at Dick's and will always appreciate it for that, but unfortunately, the value isn't there anymore. Like I said, it's still a good place on occasion, but not nearly as good as it once was. It's sad to think about how it used to be and compare it to what it is now. And if anyone cares to know, my standard order is (and has been for years) a Whammy, two #2s, a large fry, and a quart of Coke. And now I pay for the two tartar sauces that used to be free. read more

Dicks is the best greasy spoon hamburger joint ANYWHERE. Our orders are the same as they were 50 years ago!!! A Whammy, large fries and a milkshake. You're stuffed after that meal. The fries are wonderful-made with real, raw potatoes. The huge bags of potatoes piled up on the rear wall let you know they're not the coated frozen fries at McDs! Hamburger is very simple, catsup, pickles, onion. But very good. Fun to watch them made. In 50 yrs we've never had one of the amazing order-takers screw up our order...not to say it never happens but it certainly doesn't happen too terribly often. How they train them I'll never know. Try it, you'll like it...as long as you're hungry for an old-fashioned simple burger meal without all the "smoothies, freezes, lattes, etc. read more

YIKES I am so disapponted, not only were the fries brown and cold and soggy but they cheated us a hamburger so I ended up going without so my son wouldn't go without. I heard great reviews but it defintely was no where near what ever one said...I WILL NEVER go back again. BEWARE MICROWAVE IN USE!!!!! I've always been a great fan of this restaurant and have stopped here every time I'm in Spokane and have even driven here from Grangeville Idaho just to get a burger on my way to Seattle. On my last two visit, I noticed that the cheeseburger was extremely hot. Even the pickle was hot which is indicative of the microwaved. On my next visit I watched carefully as the chef I use that term loosely, took a hamburger that was in the warmer added cheese to it and put it in the microwave. I asked the lady at the counter if they had microwave my cheeseburger, and she said they put it in the microwave to melt the cheese. I've been cooking hamburgers were over 50 years I've always melted the cheese on the grill. The lady behind the counter said if you want one off the grill you just have to ask. If I wanted a microwave cheeseburger I would go to 7-Eleven. Needless to say I'm very disappointed in this turn of events that will have to seriously consider my return to this restaurant. To me there is no greater crime then microwaving any food! read more

Dicks burgers sums up Spokane in many ways. The property is dirty, how many people have thrown up in that parking lot must be much more than you could guess. The people hanging around there could live in the bushes in the parking lot. Flies are ecstatic when they are born in this area. The area smells rancid and the fact they have no drive thru makes it hardly worth it to walk up to this area. Even thinking what sticks on your shoe that you track into your car and so on makes your mind go off into thought of new super viruses like bird meets rat DNA. So onto the food the fries are ok but the burger was the saddest burger I have ever seen. If you don't eat it in about 15 min it morphs into a hockey puck that I'm sure lasts longer in the dumps than plastic bags. Even the birds in the area look homeless, greasy feathers all sticking out every which way. Eyes glassy, wandering around the parking lot in circles. So just going to this place makes me want to jump on the freeway (which is right behind the establishment) and drive as far away as possible. I will give it 2 stars for you people in Spokane that hold this place dear to your hearts and for whatever reason are unable to move out of this very depressing city. read more

I've eaten at Dick's in Seattle a lot and found this to be totally different. Hamburgers were dry and tasted terrible - kids wouldn't even eat them. Chicken strips were ok and fries were ok. Milk shakes were not even cold were not so good either. Really worse than McDonald's in my opinion and I can't stand McDonald's. read more

Been going to Dicks since I was a boy. Still go on occasion. Has it changed? Yep. Was it ever the end-all burger place in town? Nope. It is what it is. Cheap, fast and just OK. It always has been. So these people complaining about everything are expecting the unreasonable. It IS by the freeway. You knew that before you stopped. Seagulls, yep. So what? Dont go to the ocean either, then. Transients, sure. Are you that afraid of them? You would have seen them before you got out of your car, keep going. Microwave is a newer addition I don't care for, ask for fresh, and they will. Just like the beloved McDonalds that pumps your food full of hormones. Cash only.... yep. Every adult walking the planet should carry SOME cash. Let's all grow up a little. No indoor seating: again, you didn't notice until you placed an order? Thats on you. You had to wait for the 1/2 chicken order to be cooked? Oh, dang, I guess you should go to KFC. Dont Google the chicken raising practices that their vendors employ, though , if you ever want to eat chicken again. At the end of the day, it is a matter of nostalgia. Does it compare with the ones on the West side, nope. Who cares? Less tourists asking 100 questions instead of reading the HUGE WHITE BOARD WITH ALL THE INFO YOU NEED ON IT won't be missed. The other reviews are spot on! Cheap eats, a socially diverse experience, and home-made, fresh cut fries to top it off. It's the first place I asked my family to stop at when I got home from Iraq. It's Spokane, pure and simple. It's not the Dicks in Seattle and doesn't pretend to be. The ice cream is great and the fish and chips are outstanding if you're not doing a burger. I recommend two Whammies, a large fry with two tartar sauces and a large (the menu calls it a "Big Buy") drink of your choice. It is one of those "one of a kind" places and you'll smile about it for years. read more

Cheap, pretty good burgers. They're a Spokane staple for those on a budget. A lot of history here, you won't find many places like it.

now dicks is great for cheap food but the service is a bit slow and i feel like they good be a bit more organized and cleaner. i give it a 3 star because they are cheap and what not but i do hate waiting in crowds of 100 or more people waiting to hear your name and hoping you heard your name. they do have picnic tables but they are not kept clean so i do recommend taking your food on the go. but if you are broke and want to do something nice for the kids this isssss the place to be. read more

Spokane's drive thru does have some very inexpensive and good eats, plus it is OLDER than Seattle's by at least a decade. Fried Chicken hot and very plain. Fried fish great if it's hot!. Whammies are always good [they slide right down] and are always very fresh. The onion rings are great as they seem to cook them only after they are ordered. Family of four can eat well for $10 if you skip the pop. read more

Undoubtedly the worst service in Spokane...ordered 2 Whammies and fries, which is an uncomplicated and straightforward order...20 Whammies already made and sitting in the bin, all that is required is for the grinning simpleton behind the counter to walk 20 feet, get the fries, and I'm on my way. Instead, I'm waiting 10 minutes, there's no action behind the counter, customers are backed up, complaining and leaving in frustration. I joined them...avoid this place at all costs, since the help is incompetent, and the food clearly is not worth the wait! read more

What can I add that hasn't already been said about Dicks. Greasy, yes, but for a fast food joint, I think it rates above all the others. My wife and I sometimes just gotta go to Dicks and have their hamburgers, fries and chicken. Sometimes it just gets into your taste buds and ya gotta take care of it! Dicks has been here a long time, and every time we go it seems to have a line waiting to order or for a pickup. Here you have to order your food through a window while standing outside and sit at an outside table or in your car to enjoy. Nothing fancy, it's cheap, and you get plenty. YUM!!!! One of the best burgers in Spokane. Total grease bomb....but its delicious. A true Spokane Landmark.

It used to be the best fast food joint in town. This place usually has lovely food. I've been going here since I was a very small child. But, I don't like the way they have people order. There is no real line and everyone is just standing waiting to order but often people walk past you and cut. If you stand close to the counter they still cut on another window. If you say don't cut the workers don't care and will serve the cutter right after seeing the incident. Often they act put out when you place your order. The fries are never a plus here, they are too salty and crunchy. You have to ask for a fresh fry and they often put old fries on the bottom and new on top. The wammy was my usual order and it was always scrumptious except for the last 3 times it tasted fine until I got to the middle of the patties and it tasted putred.. rotten. I don't know what happened to dicks hamburgers but it's a Shane. read more
