OMG. First time trying this Mexican restaurant. I usually go to a different restaurant in town. Atmosphere is very charming and fun. Drinks were delicious. The service was like nothing I have ever in my 65 years experienced. Hopefully she was under the influence of something and not just naturally like this. She asked what we wanted 3x and still just stared and swayed. When Drinks and app came it was not exactly what we ordered (3x). When we asked for what we ordered she said, "OH but now I have to go back and get that". The have to was exaggerated. We then had to request utensils and napkins. She was gone for a bit and when came back she swayed and placed 2 sets of utensils and 1 napkin down in front of my sister. She ran her fingers across the napkin and stared as if she saw something we didn't. I flagged down a different waitress and asked for napkins, not wanting to tear my sister's napkin in half. When she arrived with the missing items we requested to cancel our dinners and paid for drinks, apps, and tip (felt bad for her). Sadly despite great reviews from others, we will never return. read more

This was my favorite place I ate at in Rhode Island. My husband and I waited about an hour and 30 minutes (this was on 4th of July) and it was well worth the wait in my opinion. First of all, there's so much to do around the restaurant so waiting is not a problem. If you can't find something else to do while waiting, I don't know what to tell you. We were seated upstairs and I will say the music was a bit too loud for my taste but honestly it was fine. My husband and I ordered the 'Salsa 4 Ways' which was super fresh and delicious and just the right amount of salsa and chips. We also shared the 'Street Corn' which I normally like but this one was just okay to me. It tasted a little bit too charred for my liking but my husband loved it. My husband ordered the 'Perfect Quesadilla' for his entree which he say was perfect. It was delicious. I ordered the 'Korean Pork BBQ Tacos' for my entree which were very good. I was so full from the Salsa 4 Ways that I could barely eat the tacos, but from what I tasted, it was super good and flavorful. The service was quick and VERY friendly. Our server was great. He was very knowledgable, attentive and yes he was quick but didn't make you feel like you needed to rush. I would highly recommend this place and will be back if I'm in the area! read more

My wife and I stopped in 2 nights after the Oyster festival for a couple of beers but wound up staying for dinner. We had a fantastic time in the upstairs bar, with Jade the bartender. They had super fresh Fiddlehead IPA on tap, that paired well with the Baja Crispy Calamari. For dinner I had the Korean pork belly tacos and my wife had the Empanadas with adobo duck. Both entrees were absolutely spot on, with good portion size and delicious. We were a little apprehensive to try Diego's based on some negative reviews, but we were totally impressed with the fantastic service from Jade and the awesome food. So we hit up the brunch and loved it so much that we went again for dinner! This time we sat ground level in a courtyard. Our server was super nice and told us they were short staffed. We told her no worries as we are very chill. We started off with margaritas. Each of us ordered a different flavor and she suggested that we get a pitcher of regular and she'd bring us our flavors in a shot glass to add. This worked out perfectly! All in all we had a blood Orange, watermelon and strawberry. Freaking delicious and got us feeling nice! The food was absolutely delicious. I loved my fried chicken tacos. Diego's is my go-to every time I visit Newport. The staff are always friendly and the food is always good. The reason for my 4 stars is simply because the wait time can be long between getting seated or waiting to put in your order/getting your check. Once you put in your order, the food comes out pretty quickly but do go in knowing that they're always busy so there will be some sort of wait time. However, the food is worth it! Definitely get the chips with 4 different salas (and guacamole) to start. The drinks are good, too, and always strong. I love Diego's and look forward to my next trip back! read more

Such a fun find in Newport! My friend and I made reservations for dinner and they were sitting us inside, but they were happy to accommodate us to an outdoor table! We arrived tonight at 5pm for dinner. We were seated upstairs outside at the top of the stairs, We ordered drinks, chips and guacamole and 3 corn chowder soups and 2 chicken tortilla soups. We received our drinks, chips and Guacamole. We asked for the WiFi password and the waitress told us it was Diegos guest or something!!!! Waited about an hour for the waitress to tell us they were out of chicken tortilla soup, so we added another corn chowder. Continue to wait. Finally asked the waitress what was going on she told us there was a problem in the kitchen; she didn't know if it was our order or not; she disappeared and we then had 2 corn chowder soups and all of our food delivered. The tacos weren't plated in the taco trays they barely had and meat and topping for each of the 3 orders. We asked for the other 2 chowders and we were given 2 cold soups the potatoes and the broth were cold.we felt the waitress didn't care about the situation she had zero personality and customer service skills.for the price we paid it was not the quality or service we should have received. I ordered a quesadilla and it was honestly the smallest quesadilla I've ever seen, it looked like it should be on the kids menu, and it was 15 dollars. Diego's was a perfect late lunch spot for our big, family party of 8 on a hot, sunny Summer day in beautiful waterfront Newport. Tbh, not sure who in our group scoped out Diego's out of all the waterfront restaurants to choose from but their choice was spot on. 3 of us (myself included) were new to Newport (LOVE IT!!) and the other 5 have played tour guide here more times than they care to remember, I'm sure. Diego's, though not directly on the water nor with water views, was close enough and was definitely in the heart of the waterfront area giving off great Newport vibes. No wait for a table - we walked in and were seated right away! We sat out on their large patio area which allowed us great people watching views. The menu had loads of classic Mexican dishes with Diego's little flavor spin on them. Something for everyone. We started with some appetizers - a tray of creamy house made guac and crunchy just-so salted house made chips. Also an order of the Street Corn. Both delicious! For the mains / entrees, we had a variety of tacos, burritos, ceviche - everything under the sun (literally and figuratively ha!). All delicious. Decent portion sizes for the money. The service left a bit to be desired, not horrible but it was sooooooo hard to flag down our server and get his attention whenever we needed something - he would buzz by again and again without looking our way. Nice guy, pleasant and accommodating when we did get his attention - just hard to get it. That would be my only criticism. On a positive note, we never felt rushed, which was appreciated because we really just wanted to sit a spell, hang and enjoy our visit. We sat in the downstairs bar, which seemed like it would be a fun place if it was hopping. The bartender was VERY friendly and offered us some tips/suggestions for places to visit while we were in town. The nachos were typical of a pub, so good but not exciting; to excite me they need to be house-made chips, and topped with tasty meat and salsa. Then he eventually cleans half the the plates and leaves the other half. Maybe I'm expecting too much as a New Yorker. The food was average, probably one of the lesser enjoyable meals. The ceviche was literally a scoop on a plate, the biggest ripoff in the world. I've never seen that in my life. The tuna poke tacos while fresh, lacked flavor without the aioli. You need to light a fire under the Monday staff. I don't think I've ever tipped less on a % scale in my entire life. How disrespectful to drop a check on the table without asking once if anyone wants water, silverware, plates or even dessert? Tourist trap or bad night? If I could give 0 stars, I would... My boyfriend and I were looking at the menu and was so excited to try out Mexican food in Newport. We waited 45 minutes and were so disappointed with the quality of the food. The chips were stale. The guacamole was bland. The "birria" taquitos had no meat and had no consome, I don't even know how they can call this birria. My boyfriend also got sick from the taquitos that he couldn't eat the rest of the food. The carne asada tacos had no flavor AT ALL. The chimichanga was the saving grace here but it was really mid. The only good thing about this place was their drinks. I love to go to Diego's regularly. I enjoy their margaritas and nachos together. I had their burrito bowl recently and it was pretty filling. It is fun to sit on the patio near the docks. The waitstaff is always helpful and accommodating. I would highly recommend going if you are visiting Newport. However, if you want a table outside you should plan ahead and get there early because it can get busy. When I told her that's not what had been relayed to me, she seemed to understand that there was a miscommunication on their end & was able to get us in. We spent the weekend in Newport and figured we'd travel around the downtown to see what the hype was about. Silly us, didn't make a reservation, and had to wait an hour. Diego's has always been the go-to Mexican restaurant for my boyfriend and I. We often change our schedules to accommodate driving over an hour to Newport to come here. The wait can be long, but the food is some of the best Mexican in the area! Our go-to dishes are always the same: We order crack fries for an appetizer (must get the side of duck gravy to go with it!) For our meals, we always get a couple of margaritas, I get the nachos with chicken tinga, and my boyfriend gets the fish tacos. I am giving this restaurant 4 stars because although the food is good, it used to be exceptional.... and I have unfortunately noticed the quality of food decline in the last couple times we have visited (many of our friends noted the same thing). They changed their menu up, which I thought was a great change... but I miss the old quality of food! :( read more
