Full disclosure... we only came here for dessert. The place was poppin' though, so I'm quite sure that the Cincinnati style chili is also worth a try. It's the kind of rock-a-billy 60s style diner. The kind of place that you'd expect to find a jukebox, and you'll find it just after the order line. When you walk in, you immediately arrive at the order counter/line. The menu is on the wall to the right, and the dessert cooler is straight ahead, displaying the cakes and salads. There was also to go style chili options, in the cans and in the jar. I really wish that I'd gotten a can or two! Once you order and pay, they give you a tray and then you walk down the line. It reminded me of the school lunch process. We each got a slice of the carrot cake and a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Both were so good, it would make your tongue slap your cheek. The icing was a cream cheese version and was rich and satisfying. The ice cream was vanilla bean and seemed like a Ben & Jerry's style, premium option of ice cream... not the soft serve kind at all. Newport's spin on Cincinnati Chili. I don't know that I'd be able to tell the difference between here and any other chili parlor in the city. I can't say that I've been over or under whelmed by their food. Merely whelmed seems to sum it up. What's nice about Dixie is the addition of Gyros, so if you're not in the mood for Cincy Chili, you've got some options. The ordering system is pretty clear and obvious, so some positive marks there. This is a decent stop if you're seeing a show at Falcon. read more

You get a good value for your money, much more food than Skyline. The chili itself is meh, I prefer something more flavorful and this felt like wet ground beef. Apparently adding garlic to your order makes it better and is unique to what I've seen for Cincinnati chili. Order at the counter and pick up there to sit wherever. Been Cincy for a little over a month, been to Skyline 3 times, Goldstar once, and various other establishments serving their own version of Cincinnati chili, and Dixie Chili is my favorite so far. Place was busy, but it was fun watching the young ladies prepare the food. I found the eating area to be clean, and the staff was friendly, taking my tray when I was finished and offering to refill my beverage. Went to Dixie Chili yesterday with friends for a brief meeting. I might have been there once before but probably blocked it out. It's a chili parlor and the vibe is "working man". The food was ok. I chose Dixie as my first place to try Cincinnati Chili. I ordered their 4 way bean chili and a coney. Their style of serving their food was a little strange. As the cashier lady lady explained it, it's basically like a school cafeteria, you order your food, you get a tray and slide it on down to get your drink and and food, then you sit down. The chili itself was pretty good my my first time trying it. You get a lot what you pay for, a generous amount of spaghetti topped with chili and beans and then a crap load of cheese. As for the coney l, wasn't really impressed. That I do believe is slightly overpriced for what I would call a mini chili dog. Overall the food was good, their customer service was great, but I probably won't return. I wanted to try Dixie, they're only in Kentucky, but in the future, I'll probably just stick to chili places in Cincinnati. read more

Disappointed. Door dashed 2 extra large 4 way onion with extra cheese. VERY small cup of spaghetti/chili compared to the usual. So portion size is wayyy smaller, prices are out of the roof expensive. Chili was runny and noodles were soggy like they had been sitting in the water for days. They are feeling the competition of other eateries and it's sad. But... Something is wrong with the employees. They all have a major attitude. It's like get your food and get out. The food tasted great and looked great but the looks on those people's faces are enough to scare a small child away. Maybe they were upset at how busy it was. They serve breakfast, chili, coneys, double deckers and other stuff. They have a few interesting things on the menu that I've never seen elsewhere. A pickle spear on a Coney? What a cute little place with its own style. Old time booths and a juke box with the glow clock and a bunch of pictures from back in the day when Cincinnati chili took off. It's very similar to Skyline chili without the run to the bathroom afterwards. I guess they have other items on the menu, but if you're getting anything other than a 6 way I don't want to talk to you. Plain spaghetti (my favorite shape of paste), topped with hearty spiced chili (meat sauce), onions, beans, cheese, and, the pièce de résistance, raw chopped garlic. Y'all your belly will be full, your hunger satisfied, and your neck protected from vampires. What more could you ask for? The 60s diner/cafeteria interior harkens back to simpler times. I had the vegetarian chili (due to the fact that the regular chili isn't gluten free, according to the cashier). The portions were small for a chili parlor ($14 for two people, and I left hungry). I'm not accustomed to having vegetarian chili, but it looked and tasted a bit heavy on the Heinz tomato ketchup. Think: sugary, red, sickly sweet: a bit like a sloppy joe. Due to the poor taste (and presumably astronomical glycemic index) I'll probably take a pass on Dixie Chili in the near future. If you want gluten free Cincinnati style chili, the obvious choice is Skyline or Goldstar - which don't have gluten added anyway. read more

Ok, so it is very similar to those other two chili places in Cincinnati. What sets this place apart is that they are all about the vegetarian chili and the overall set up of the restaurant. It is more like a diner feel. You order at the counter, then slide around the side with your tray to pick up your drink. Sometimes, the food is ready by then, but if not, they give you a country's flag as your table number and bus it out to you. As a vegetarian, I don't have much knowledge in the way of chilis. That being said, this chili was fine. I don't understand the sweet cinnamon taste that Cincinnati chili is known for. I prefer savory all the way through. The chili to spaghetti ratio was really off, though. Soooooo much chili and chili juice and chili bits. The spaghetti was drowning in it. The waffle fries with cheese were super tasty and I would go back just for those-just perfect. All in all, it is pretty similar to the other guys, but the waffle fries are superior to the regular cheese fries. And you won't leave hungry. As much as I love Skyline, I think I prefer Dixie Chili. The chili is thicker and more flavorful, in my opinion. I REALLY enjoyed my coneys today. I've only been to Dixie's Newport location. The process is a bit different than most chili restaurants I've visited. You order and pay at the counter, then you're given a cafeteria tray where you move down the line, and you're given your food. You then take your tray of food to the table of your choice. When you're done, you leave everything at the table and the staff cleans it up. I've heard rumors that the Newport location is Dixie's best. I'm eager to try the others to see if that's true! In addition to the traditional Cincinnati chili options (coneys, 3-ways, etc.), Dixie also has deli options. They have several salads and sandwiches, and I think I saw some desserts in the display case! The employees were wearing masks, but the degree to which they were properly wearing masks varies. The coneys were very good with a large portion of chili and cheese. They were supposed to bring out my waffle fries but forgot and I ate all my coneys waiting for them. I had to return to the counter and request them, and they then in turn had to make them. All in all, the food was very good and I would return. Better than Skyline for sure. read more

Dixie Chili has been my favourite Cincinnati style chill restaurant for a very long time and this location on Monmouth street is the one I've been coming to since I was a kid. They have the normal chili parlour menu of coneys, spaghetti, as well as lots of deli sandwiches. They also are one of the few restaurants that serve waffle fries which I find very exciting. The fries crispy and delicious and is very convenient for dipping into condiments (preferably ketchup). I also got 3 cheese coneys on this occasion which is my favourite application of chili. The hot dog was fine, they put lots of cheese on it and of course the chili was spectacular. They don't go for anything unique in their chili recipe. It's just a very straightforward, old school chili that just gives you that awesome warm feeling and is so scrumptious. The store looks great and the folks are always awesome here. Dixie Chili is my chili parlor of choice in the Cincinnati area. The chili here is thicker and heartier than its famous counterparts, and the menu has a lot more choices. Dixie has also been around longer than the competitors, starting in the biz in 1929. Having grown up in Northern Kentucky, Dixie Chili is usually the first choice chili among those of us who know better. Dixie is not only a chili parlor, but a deli as well. Here they are serving up homemade soups and salads (with fresh made dressings) and the typical deli sandwiches. Their chicken salad is some of the best I have tasted and those salad dressings are to die for. But for good reason, the chili is the reason to come to Dixie. My biggest complaint for chili competitors in Cincinnati is their chili is too sweet and too watery. You will find none of that here at Dixie. The chili is thick and meaty with little hint of sweetness at all; there is no reason to add hot sauce to your chili here. Dixie serves up the best chili cheese fries around - fries are cooked to order (the cashier will yell to someone to "drop a fry" when you order) and are waffle fries! And everyone knows fries taste better in waffle form. Do yourself a favor, and check out the menu because there are some wonderful additions that you can't get anywhere else and some fun surprises. Not much has changed at Dixie in Newport since it opened including the employees, but that's one of the things I love most about it. They definitely take the idea of family owned and operated to heart, and seeing as how long their employees have been there, it seems their employees are considered family. When you walk in, you will instantly feel transported back to the 1950s - definitely add some money to the jukebox. On Friday and Saturday nights and on Sunday afternoons after church, the line of people waiting in line to place their orders for chili extends out onto the sidewalk. And the best part? Open seriously late! 1am during the week and 3am on the weekends! This is truly the best Cincinnati-style chili in the city and a must try! read more

My husband picked up lunch today at Dixie Chili on Monmouth Street in Newport. We are life long fans of Dixie. Today he ordered a super six way, a cheese coney, and cheese fries. The fries came without cheese. It happens, so I called to let them know and to get a credit for next time. I was told that they wouldn't issue a credit, but would remake my order if I brought back the incorrect order. Unless I brought back those fries, they were unable to do anything. This is not good customer service and I was very surprised. I didn't take the fries back, but if I had, there would have been no compensation for my inconvenience. They give skyline a run for their money with their three ways, coneys, chili cheese fries, and their signature "alligators". Dixie is my one true love in life...well, food wise. I love Dixie in ridiculous amounts. I don't even know how I'm supposed to review something of such perfection. Dixie Chili is the best "Cincinnati" style chili around. They have their normal chili, and they have vegetarian chili. Both are amazing. I have a handful of vegetarian friends and they LOVE getting Dixie because of the great vegetarian chili. Besides the normal Conies, and (Insert Number) - Ways that you will find at any Cincinnati Chili Restaurant, they have amazing Gyro's. They also have waffle fries. You can get the waffle fries as chili cheese fries. I just usually get them as cheese fries with a side of ranch and split them with whomever I'm with. It is so good. I love their waffle fries. Other things to try that they have our sandwiches, salads, and cake. They also have root beer floats which are awesome. I love getting Barqs Red Cream Soda instead of the root beer as a substitute in a float. It is SO good. Other than the amazing food at Dixie, and how affordable it is. The atmosphere is legit. I love the old diner feel. I love the sassy older southern women who work here. The guys who work here are always really nice and polite. The younger girls though are the ones that are usually pretty short and rude with you, but I could care less. I just ignore them for the two minutes I have to speak to them at the register and move on to get my food. Dixie is also open late every night. They are open to 1 AM on weeknights and 3 AM on the weekends. If you eat Skyline or Goldstar and haven't had Dixie, you are missing out on life and the best Cincinnati style chili ever. read more

Dixie Chili is hands down my favorite Cincinnati-style chili parlor. Their coneys can't be beat with their fluffy cheese and perfectly seasoned chili. But what makes this place so awesome is all of the other great tasting stuff on the menu. Their Greek salads are phenomenal because of their homemade creamy house dressing, which is a yogurt and vinaigrette combo that is so good the first time I had it I ate the leftovers with a spoon. The make in house chicken, egg, and ham salad. I had the chicken salad plate which comes with a huge helping of chunky chicken salad and fruit. I was totally psyched to see that in addition to the standard fare grapes and honeydew I got some kiwi, orange slices, and pineapple. Their deli sandwiches are awesome, too. The honey wheat bread is soft and the sandwich is stacked with tons of meat and cheese. Definitely worth a try if you are not in the mood for chili. read more

It has something for everyone. Dixie operates cafeteria style: order off a giant wall menu, pay, get a tray, drink, then pick up your entree at the end, and exit into the dining room. Service is pretty quick here. The chili is different than the standard chains: it's hearty and full of meat, but also has the sweet flavoring that Cincinnati is known for. They even serve vegetarian chili that tastes better than the original! In addition to your three ways and coneys, the restaurant serves up double decker sandwiches, soups, salads, pies, and more. I really enjoy the Greek fries, topped with Feta and balsamic vinaigrette. The Greek vegetable soup arrived in a gigantic bowl with chunks of potato, tomato, beans, and all things hearty. Made fresh daily, it tasted straight from the garden with a broth that is second to none. Plus, it came with two kinds of oyster crackers: traditional and New England chow-dah crackers. The only downside: no refills. I order my beverage with no ice so I get more soda, but at $1.75 per cup, the restaurant could afford to give us some extra drink. I grew up in Newport and Dixie Chili has always been my favorite spot to visit when I'm back in my hometown. The aroma of Cincinnati chili lures me in just passing Dixie when I'm on Monmouth St. I love getting the 5-way chili with two conies and an iced tea. Delicious!
