We were greeted at the reception stand by a very condescending woman with a dissertation to all waiting parties on mandatory 18% gratuity plus service charge, no split checks and an added charge if using credit. Once seated, we were served cold corn cakes. I asked for warm ones and was told by our waiter we'd have to pay for additional. I had to ask for a glass of water, cutlery and my ordered beverage. Our waiter, Arturo had the personality of a cold fish. He did one stop to ask if things were alright. The woman from earlier walked by so I asked about the corn cake issue, she waved it away and said "yeah, why didn't you ask for them before?" then proceeded to spend approximately ten minutes In conversation with two gentlemen at another table then returned with, "oh I forgot about your bread." The food was just ok, peach cobbler delicious.I decided to pay my check with cash because of the added expense of credit. Arturo returned and asked if I wanted my change. Seriously! Our family visited Dixie Kitchen this past September for my grandmother's 85th birthday, per her request. The food is always great here but I wanted to speak to our dining experience for this visit. The host that greeted us was super friendly. The manager that walked us to our table took a moment to acknowledge my grandmother and shout-out her birthday to dining guests. The guests in the restaurant applauded my grandmother as she walked to her table smiling from ear to ear. Our server was also very attentive. We brought large balloons for my grandmother and no one bothered us about them. Grandma enjoyed Dixie kitchen's world famous fried green tomatoes as well as the catfish. The food was delicious but the service made our experience a home run! I have to say this is horrifying. I'm having a date at Dixie Kitchen, I haven't eaten there in a really long time, however it used to be one of my favorites. I often went to the Hyde park location. Regardless, my date is going well, conversation is good, food is good and in the middle of our meal a ROACH crawls across my dates plate. In the midst of being completely and utterly grossed the hell out I advise my date to catch it. We show the waitress the roach and she is shocked and discloses they sprayed earlier as if that supposed to lessen the disgust and nausea. I at least expected some type of kind gesture to say sorry. We got 50% off. It's a shame this has to be written but it just seems the facilities are pretty nasty. Roaches in our food, it's vile. But between not being stable enough to be open during their listen hours, and the short essay you have to read coming the overall management of the establishment is the reason for 2 stars. Today it says 9pm close but 730pm we are turned away told "we decided to close early today"... not the first time they closed early either. I have been an off and on patron of this south suburban establishment for about 25 years but tonight was most likely my last, at least under this ownership/management. To be blunt, DK's caters to a predominantly black but loyal clientele in this working class region. It was a little bit off putting when DK went to a mandatory 18% gratuity, which they aggressively announce to every guest before being seated. Mandatory gratuities are simply not a thing in this geographical location. In addition, if you use a credit card, there is a 3% surcharge. These 2 strikes would be a turnoff for many, and I've swallowed hard in the name of support for local businesses, and the food is overall very good (not the cocktails--excess sugar, no punch). Bottom line, the guests seem fairly content and unbothered by the unusual payment demands. Tonight crossed the line. After being served their famous fried green tomatoes, which sit on a bed of shredded lettuce, I noticed what had to be 10 strands of long black hair, more of less clumped together under some of the lettuce. I alerted our server who alerted the owner/manager who is a familiar face. She came over with a very circumspect look on her face and started in with us about how she "can guarantee that the hair didn't come from my kitchen" and that "in my 30 years I've never had anything like that happen." I told her it certainly didn't come from me, who is bald, or my wife, who has a head full of gray hair. I never alleged that the hair came from the kitchen, but as I told her, "I just wanted you to know, and thought you would want to know." She looked at me in bemusement and said nothing but walked away. Written on her face was a strong suspicion that my wife and I had somehow pulled a caper to get a free appetizer?! Really?! We never demanded anything but simply requested a fresh order of fried green tomatoes. The owner brought them out herself, laid them on the table and never said another word. Spoiler alert, there was no gesture, verbal or otherwise, to express any remorse that we had a clump of hair in our fried green tomatoes, regardless of the source. What this tells me is that DK takes their guests for granted and they get away with it because the guests tolerate it, from mandatory gratuities, to 3% credit card surcharges, and if there is a serious problem with the food that you can't definitively pin on DK, no apology is required, and no gesture of remorse needed. It was as if she so feared that we expected some monetary compensation, that she had an arrogant paralysis that prevented her from opening her mouth, parting her lips, and simply apologizing. I can't speak for others but I demand better when I'm spending my money and where I have options. If more guests followed suit, I think DK would get the message and replace cynicism with genuine customer appreciation. As I wrote on my check, "Apologies don't cost you anything." Curiously, when my wife and I walked to the parking lot towards our car, we overheard another small group saying "this place has turned ghetto." I wanted some fried green tomatoes and I always love them from Dixie kitchen. I stopped in and placed an order of them to go. I paid almost $10 for 5 tomatoes. I live about 6 mins down the road. I got home and opened the container. Every one of the fried tomatoes were soggy and had no crispiness to them at all. They were so soggy to the point i couldn't even pick them up. I had to use a spoon to eat them. They need to find a better container to have these transported in so they won't be soggy. It's a shame because when you eat in, they are delicious. I visited this restaurant with sister and niece, but vaguely remembered it being in Evanston - inquiring of our waiter - I was right. They had a second restaurant there but for some reason it closed. The waiter assured us that their location isn't closing, but was moving to a place that wasn't so out of the way and hidden behind the dark recesses of bland buildings - the "strip mall" looked like it was empty aside from the business of the Dixie Kitchen. The atmosphere is like being on a steamboat on a bayou - I expected a gator to pop its head up at our window, but it didn't - this is good. The food was tasty with a healthy dose of fried foods and cool sugary drinks to wash it all down with. I dined on a po' boy, (mini fried shrimp served on french bread and cabbage - they made their own sauce, but I'm not a sauce kind of a girl), and seasoned french fries. Sis had fried chicken with a ton of trimmings and niece-y had catfish. Everyone was thoroughly fed and simply couldn't add more when the waiter came by and offered desserts, although it was most tempting. The only draw back is the location - hopefully, once they move, with the new location, the outside surroundings won't feel so scary, however, even more people will flock to this hidden gem. Today, December 11, 2022 at 12:30 pm, myself and a friend stopped here. When we entered, a young man asked if we were dining in. Answered YES. Was asked table or a booth. Answered BOOTH. We were seated. Bread and water was delivered to our table. Waitress took our order. Food was delivered. I asked for more bread to go with the food, the Waitress told us that would be $1.50 more. We declined. Ashed waitress to exchange my glass of water because it was seltzer water. She said it was water, but she would get another.. Asked for check, and this is the icing on the cake. There was the cost of our food, 18% charge for tip, and 3.29% charge for using my debit card. I asked for manager to dispute the extra charges. Manager told me that is how we do it. My position is I was not aware of these possible extra costs. Manager said, there are signs as you coming in. So, I'm expected to read all signage as I enter a restaurant. I feel that information should be conveyed with large signage and conversation. Manager walked away from table and us. As we leave, I look for signs the Manager spoke of. On the inner door was a 10x12 sheet of paper taped to door that said ( no splitting of checks and you had to pay by cash or card. On the inner counter before entering the eating section was a 10x12 sign with about ten different rules that no one would notice. Asked the manager her name twice, finally she Karen. This business makes plenty of money, so there's just no friggin excuse for this! Yes the food is good. Yes, it's difficult to get a seat in this restaurant, because of the constant flow of people. Her pants were extremely tight and low cut where you could see the pelvis dimples in her hips. Personally, I found nothing wrong with it, but the stares she got from couples ha ha ha I don't know if it's a good idea for the before 6pm crowds especially older conservatively dressed women. I've dealt with those stares myself, but I think there should be a point of wearing outfits based on the shift. Later shift low cut and early shift neat. So we enter the restaurant / bar and we are talking and eating out of no where they turn on loud music! It was so loud for the rest of dinner I either had to lean over and yell in my moms ear or signal that I would just tell her in the car. The music wouldn't have been so bad if the volume wasn't so high. You go from no music to blaring loud music, why? At the end of the day as an African American woman I asked myself why are they making so much money, but won't... - fix and clean the bathrooms - replace the dishes - replace the bar stools - or etc The reason why is the patrons are mostly African American. If in spite of these things these people rate this place five stars and frequently patronize it they have no reason to invest the money to improve. I don't live in the South Suburbs, but this is the fifth restaurant in the area that I've patronized with the same problems. It would be different if the place was frequently empty, but wake up people they are telling you and anyone else who decides to eat there that you don't ask for or deserve better! I will never step foot in this place again and I'm sorry so many people like getting cut up on torn chairs and holding it since the bathrooms are under standard. I used to frequent when they were located in Hyde Park but since relocating to Lansing, it's a bit out of the way. Nevertheless, the food is good and if your time allows go support them. All diners receive a basket of Johnny cakes to nibble on while waiting to order. The first basket is free and you must pay for subsequent orders. As an appetizer, I ordered the fried green tomatoes. I really enjoy how the taste of the green onion mingles with the cornmeal seasoning and brings it all together. On this visit I chose the jerk catfish with two sides (plantains and collards). Only 4 plantain slices came with my order and my collards had been drained and not very much juice on them. My hostess Elantra (hope I spelled it right) gets cool points for 1. Learning what simple syrup was. 2. Bringing me some simple syrup freshly made for my iced tea. She was attentive and managed the small crowd with a positive attitude. On to the entree. The fish, although "jerked" didn't have a lot of jerk flavor. Elantra brought me a small container on the side and it did enhance the flavor. Standard order is one filet and I order two and struggled to finish the portion. The greens and plantains were cooked to my satisfaction and I enjoyed them. I took off one star for the annoying 20% gratuity for a party of 5...not 8 and the looming warning on each page of the menu about drink sharing and if they "catch" you; you'll be charged. Wow. Just wow. I recently read some of the reviews for this place and saw all of these glowing reviews, so I guess my family's expectations were a bit too high to please. But I guess we might have had a bad day, considering the crowd that comes in and out of this place (which, after eating there, I don't get unless these people are either desperate or have never actually eaten in a decent restaurant before). So we (my mom, me, my dad, my aunt and my uncle) sit down and my mom gets the gumbo, which was good save for the fact that it was spicy...like really spicy. A restaurant called Tilly's has better gumbo than a Southern/Cajun restaurant, but I digress. The main courses arrived and I must tell you of the tragedy of my parents' anniversary dinner: a) My mom's pork chops came with collard greens and mashed potatoes. The potatoes and the pork chops had two different gravies (is that plural for gravy?). The mash had a barbecue colored gravy and the pork chops had this gray, sludge looking gravy that tasted disgusting. They were dry and inedible and my mother (who prides herself on cleaning her plates) barely touched them. The collards were flavorless. The TL;DR is that she only enjoyed the water. She would have enjoyed a long island iced tea, but it was so strong that about two sips would leave an alcoholic drunk. b) My salmon was....eh. The Mac and cheese was acceptable and the coleslaw was peppery and it had very little flavor besides that. The lemonade needed sugar, DESPERATELY needed sugar. (Honestly I'm a little afraid of food poisoning). c) My dad had an okay pulled pork sandwich with fast-food quality french fries. My uncle had a "Southern" Sampler. Which consisted of "jambalaya" which in turn was nothing but beans, rice, and a few measly proteins. Overpriced beans and rice with jambalaya sauce would be the appropriate menu term. And again my auntie's long island iced tea was so damn strong that she had to take my uncle's drink (Swamp Water, AKA sugarless Kool-Aid that anyone can make in their own damn home). We recently went to this restaurant on my sister and her husband's anniversary. Everyone has told us about how delicious the food was here, but, to my dismay and dissappointment, it was a let down (also please take into account that maybe we just had a bad day): 1. My sis and I ordered long island iced teas. I had the watermelon and my sis had the regular. All I have to say is the bartender is ready to serve life in prison for a double homicide because honey those drinks tasted like pure alcohol. So much so that we could not drink them and I had to swap with my husband and take his swamp water for mine. 2. The food came and here comes the real dissappointment of the evening. My sis had two dry, smothered pork chops with this weird, alien gray gravy that was extremely offputting. The greens were flavorless as well. The hubby got the Southern sampler with that had like one shrimp and one measly sausage. So, basically, it was just rice and beans. I had blackened tilapia, which was okay except for the mushy and tasteless sweet potatoes. My sis's husband got a pulled pork sandwich and fries and again it was okay. Everything was just...OKAY for a restaurant priding itself on "Real Cajun Cuisine" or some stuff. The real star of the evening was my hubby's pie, which was actually good. Very hesitant on visiting this establishment by checking the reviews prior. So we (husband and I) decided to give it a shot since people complained about the slow service mainly and we have patience so that wasn't a issue for us in general. We had the fried chicken with Mac and greens, fried shrimp with Mac and green beans and let me tell you!! We were in silence as we chewed and smiled. The fried chicken had flavor and southern typical flor and fry so it has a crispy coating and not all that extra breading. Mac and cheese was divine and seeing they put onions in the green beans to me meant they mean business by paying attention to every detail even the sides. Even the shrimp had a cornmeal breading like it should this food definitely took us back to NOLA. We ate and smiles some more and needed a nap after all that Godly goodness.
