I have to update our other review. We had a completely different experience this time. I realize that it's important to try places at least three times. Then, if it's not a good experience, three strikes, I'm out and probably not coming back. We went back on a Friday at 5:00. We scored a table in the music hall area, where the historic fountain used to be. We ordered Prickly Pear Margaritas and they were outstanding, our server was so attentive and it was BUSY! Well at least I enjoyed my Prickly Pear Margarita...The rest of the experience was so-so. I ended up having to send back my Carne Asada, it was undercooked and incredibly bland. I do really try not to send back food however with the price point being where it was and the food almost being an edible I had to do so. I ordered a tamale but even that was mainly just a blob of veggie. I was recommended this location and I can see why the interiors incredibly cute, and the staff was accommodating when I needed to return my first meal... but maybe I'd suggest to go for a cocktail until they maybe work out some restaurant kinks. read more

The first thing that needs needs to be done is add another "$" to the price indicator. The rest of my review is simple, "food is fair to good, definitely not worth the price". Service was okay. Farm raised trout dish was flavorless and my chili rellenos were just okay. When you are in Taos, there are so many good restaurants, you don't need to spend $30 for chili rellenos. $62 for 2 Mexican entrees is asking a bit much. Ordered the ribeye steak medium rare. It was either a bad cut or poorly prepared. 1/3 of it I had to spit out as bad inedible fat, I was able to get 1/3 down. And the last 1/3 was hard and over cooked. When I brought it to the attention of management they credited $17 of a $43 meal. No offer to remake the steak. Will never go back. My experience is that dinner at Doc's can be excellent, and it can be disappointing. Last night was disappointing. Our party of six was seated and fifteen minutes later we met our waitress. We knew what we wanted by then so we ordered and began the 50 minute wait for our entrees, during which time our waitress didn't come by once - our appetizer and soups were brought by others who had to ask who got what. We even had to fill our own water glasses. When the entrees came the food quality was pretty good, except for the Wagyu beef burgers, both of which were over cooked. Mine was even burned. After speaking with her manager, she took mine off the bill but the other burger at the table didn't speak up so we paid full price - $22 - for that gray patty. Also one of our party ordered corn tortillas with his entree, but they were forgotten. So he asked for them again, still no tortillas until they were finally brought, after he was almost done eating, and of course we were charged for them. I know Doc Martin's can do better. I ate there with a smaller group last month and it was probably the best meal I've ever had in Taos. I thanked the waiter specially after, and tipped him 25%. That was a five star experience but last night was one star so I'm averaging them out for this review. I know restaurants have their ups and downs, and I don't expect perfection. The insult about last night's experience was that they charged a mandatory 22% gratuity since we had six people. I really feel that, since the waitress knew she'd get a fat tip no matter what, she focused on other tables. Not sure what the kitchen's problem was. And where was the manager? In a restaurant that cares about service, managers pays visits to tables where they know there are problems. Doc Martin's doesn't do that. I'be back to Doc Martin's, but never again will I bring a party of six or more there. read more

When my wife and I went here in mid-April 2024 we had a wonderful experience. We traveled with friends to show them Taos in mid-June 2025 and counted on showcasing Doc Martin's. Taos, yes. Doc Martin's, no. We attempted to order a bottle of wine from the wine list that showed prices by the glass and by the bottle. We were told they would sell us glasses of the wine, but not the bottle. What?? Why? Because. Try our margaritas. What do you recommend? The Perfect Margarita. 2 of us got them. Horrible. No lime. No Cointreau, triple sec or Grand Marnier. IMperfect Margarita, but probably good drain cleaner. Went downhill from there. Three meals served together (oh, now that you have your entree, shall I bring your salad?), and the fourth meal came about 5 minutes later. No team is flawless every day, but the bar, the kitchen and our server had a stinky night, so our experience was crap. Won't be back. read more

This place came up highly rated on a Google search - I can't imagine why. We ordered margaritas. I had the "I Need A Miracle" pomegranate margarita. Quite possibly the most flavorless margarita I've ever had. Waiter asked if I wanted salt, I did, but didn't ask my dining companion - who didn't. Both came with salt. We both ordered the Taco Platter, and chose one each of the shredded chicken, wagyu beef, and carne adovada. The menu didn't say it came with rice and beans, but just to be sure I ordered it without any beans. It came with beans. Sent it back. Waiter was apologetic - but isn't it his job to check the order before it's served? The shredded chicken came from a can. The beef certainly wasn't wagyu. The carne adovada, which was my first experience, was good. Not great. The food was exceptionally average. Place has a very nice ambiance. Service is quick (maybe too quick - take a minute to check the order!). Probably won't be back. read more

A few friends and myself decided to spend Christmas Eve at Doc Martens this year. This is my third Christmas out in Taos, and this year was the best yet. There was a special Christmas Eve menu, and each course was paired with the wine. Every dish that came out was beautiful and packed full of amazing flavor. I had the steak and asparagus, which was cooked to a perfect mid rare. The winds went perfect with every course in the desert was to die for. Overall, I was very disappointed with my experience at Doc Martin's. I'm from Oklahoma and had brought my daughter to New Mexico to celebrate her 10th birthday. I had looked over the local restaurant's menus and settled on Doc Martin's for her big birthday dinner, even made a reservation two weeks in advance. We visited the restaurant on Dec 21, 2024. We arrived about 10 minutes before our reservation, just in case, and were seated immediately. The hostess was sweet and friendly, looked at our reservation, and noticed we were there to celebrate my daughter's birthday. The hostess wished her a happy birthday and seated us. After that, it went downhill pretty fast. The restaurant isn't very big and (at best) maybe at half capacity while we were there. We waited over 15 minutes for a waitress/waiter to greet us. We ordered our drinks, an appetizer, and our meal (all at the same time). We ordered their chips, salsa, queso, and guacamole as our appetizer. It took well over 35 minutes for that to come out. While were waiting for the appetizer a family of 6 came in (this is 25-35 minutes after we were seated), and within less than 15 minutes of being seated they received their drinks and appetizers, which were just chips and salsa, but at this point, we had already been there for over 35 minutes. When we finally received our appetizer, the family of 6 received their meals soon after. I was really discouraged and disappointed in our appetizer because the queso and guacamole were definitely from a bag. The queso tasted like nacho cheese from a stadium, the only difference from stadium nacho cheese was this queso had green chiles in it, but the taste, color, and consistency were identical. The guacamole was just mushed-up avocado, but also something you find at a stadium or some quick place to eat. The salsa was good, super spicy, but still good, and had flavor, but the appetizer was not nearly worth the $16 dollars at all. As for the meal, it took over an hour for it to come out. We arrived at 7pm and by the time we got our meal, it was already 8:20ish, the family of 6 was getting ready to pay and leave.... I ordered the steak, asparagus, and potatoes. My daughter ordered the stacked enchiladas that came with rice and beans. Her entire meal was not good. Her beans had no flavor and I don't think they were cooked all the way and her rice was very bland. My steak was good, undercooked, but still good, the asparagus was nice big pieces and cooked perfectly, but the potatoes were also bland, not warm, and seemed like they were from a bag also. The smoked juniper demi-glace was not impressive at all, which saddened me, because I was looking forward to it. The enchiladas were $22 and the steak was $42. The bill before tip was just over $96.... the meal and experience was not worth the $96... I still left a tip just over the 25% because the waitress was friendly, informative, and was constantly updating us on our meals and refilled our drinks in a timely matter. But overall, I would not visit there again, nor would I suggest going there for the price. Also, after reading more of the reviews and seeing the owner's responses to the reviews, I'm honestly disappointed in that too. As part of my job, I work with entrepreneurs and small business owners, and the owner's response to the reviews is borderline inappropriate. You should never tell a customer their experience is "completely inaccurate" and should not respond with a half-apology. "we're sorry you had a bad experience but your opinion is wrong" is not taking ownership of the service you provided that day. Sometimes, restaurants just have a bad day, and the owner should validate the customer's experience and remedy the problem, not make it worse by responding in the way that they currently are. I hope management takes this seriously because they do have a great location, setup, and atmosphere, just not running at their full potential. read more

Management. Management has a skewed view of management-employee-customer relations. I've experienced the metamorphosis of Doc Martin's from one of Taos's best to one to avoid. I'm a "Boomer" who doesn't pine for the past. I do hope DM's finds a path to hospitality. Good food is the start. Ambiance sets said food's experience. Employees, from the host to the cooks to the dish washers, every employee has their role needed to provide for the customers best experience. Management. These folks are like an orchestra conductor, ensuring that every step of the customer's experience is the best. These folks are required but they get in their heads that they are more valuable. They are not. If any of the folks I mention above don't make it to their job. This causes a break in the chain that can stop customers from answering your establishment. If management doesn't show up, the show goes on. If it's a well-oiled machine, The show goes on well. read more

First time trying the new menu at doc martens I was a bit skeptical, but I must say the new food is amazing. I ordered the ribs and my friend had the classic chili Relleno. What a sad state of affairs. The "Living Room of Taos" is now the crapiest kitchen in the Land of Enchantment. We waited 45 minutes for a burger to come out as hard and as black as a hockey puck. The nachos were soggy and looked like someone with a blindfold had plated. Neither of these plates should have ever left any self-respecting kitchen. The waitress was nice when she said she'd take the burger off the tab, but that's not a favor to us. That should have been a given. But the clincher was when the kitchen staff started blasting some really crappy heavy metal. Now I'm all about a good metal riff, but having it blaring from a kitchen into a dining room is about as klassy as your sub-par nachos. The Living Room of Taos needs a thorough renovation in spirit and vibe. What was once a fun gathering spot, is now just another over-priced crappy restaurant that is apparently being run by a bunch of people who don't care. Absolutely divine for dinner. Food and drinks were delicious. We were seated in a courtyard where they physically spaced tables. It was beautiful at dusk/sunset. The landscape and string lights give the perfect romantic ambience. The staff even placed faux candles on the tables as it got darker. Always a favorite, our recent visit was a fiasco. So sad what has happened since new ownership and Covid arrived. Our Caesar salad was limp and the dressing appeared to have been squirted from a tube. The wines on the list were largely unavailable. The waitress was impersonal and abrasive. When it came time to order entrees (mostly Mexican food now), we had lost our appetites....and ordered the check instead. Don't ask for anything substituted one a regular menu item, according to the waitress we had the answer will always likely be no, even though the offer what you want to sub in another menu item. We really enjoyed our meals. The atmosphere outside was also fantastic. We got the queso fundido with warm tortillas which was surprisingly made with vegan cheese (we couldn't tell). My wife got the blue corn chicken enchiladas with red chili sauce which was flavorful, cheesy and not spicy. Don't let the stars fool you, this place is absolutely fantastic. My wife and I came here a few years ago and fell in love with the place. While a few things have changed (the chile rellenos aren't quite the same although they're still great) the food is top notch and the staff is still super friendly. We plan on making this a priority stop every time we're in Taos. read more
