I've been wanting to try Dokodemo for the longest time because I heard they do Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki, my favorite style (with noodles, not cabbage). They have an eclectic menu of japanese street foods and the inside is actually larger than you would think for a place making Japanese bar/comfort food! The okonomiyaki was DELICIOUS. It was everything I've been missing and I'm sad I didn't try this place sooner but I will definitely come back to try the rest of their menu, too. You could tell the owners are authentic and it's one of those places that survived the transition from Astor place being a bit of a Japan town to what it is today. Keep this place open at all costs! Surprisingly had seating on a Saturday evening and no wait to order. The okonomiyaki was so fire, and you can choose the protein you want in it! I would say the soy yakisoba could use some improvement as there wasn't that much taste to it. And the beef rice bowl was like alright, but we agreed that something in that bowl tasted weird. Like the fatty beef just tasted suspicious for some reason. Either way, I'm sure there are lots of other things to try. And this place is like an order at the kiosk and they bring it to your table kinda situation, so technically no tipping required! And pricing was more than fair. The owner of this place is a man named Shin Takagi who went around Japan to perfect his recipes, and as a result, you'll find dishes from all over the country. Most places will offer the standard okonomiyaki and yakisoba. This place offers unique items such as hiroshima-yaki (an okonomiyaki variation that features thinner batter and fried noodles inside it), ramen rice (a soy sauce based mix of stir-fried noodles & rice), and hakata yaki udon (tonkatsu sauce mixed with fried udon). The portions sizes here were big, and the food was rich in flavor. This is a humble place and you actually order at the counter (they'll bring the food to your table). There is also an ample amount of both indoor and outdoor seating, so a group can easily fit here. The tonkotsu is tasty. It's not as thick or complex in flavor as I usually like, but it was acceptable. The noodles however were not very good. The half egg that comes with it was submerged and sadly I only saw the white part. They said they would bring us water, but it never came. read more

They charge for every addition, which stinks but let's you somewhat customize your dish. Found this place on yelp and we hobbled over (okay fine, he walked normally and I hobbled) Watch your step as you go down a few steps to go in- take a look at the menu and order at the counter. DokoDemo (which means "anywhere/wherever" in Japanese) offers various hearty Japanese carb dishes like takoyaki, okonomiyaki, yakisoba, fried rice and rice bowls topped with meat. They also offer ramen rice, which seems to be a hybrid of fried ramen noodles and rice- my husband got this with pork and it disappeared in a matter of minutes, he LOVED it. You can also adjust the spiciness of the dish- I got the yakisoba with chicken and asked for mild. However, they made me a spicy version, but no worries- I told the staff at the counter and a new, mild yakisoba came out soon after. The chicken was juicy and well seasoned and well cooked. The yakisoba was made with ramen noodles (not the usual wheat noodles) and included bamboo shoots and cilantro, which I had never had before in yakisoba. While the dish was good overall, I think it is more "fusion yakisoba" than the traditional Japanese yakisoba that people may think of when they hear "yakisoba" or what I grew up with. It was a Tuesday evening, it was freezing out in NYC, and we were feeling something hot and lathered in sauce- so we decided to go to Dokodemo to check out their okonomiyaki. We were fairly lucky in that the place was pretty calm when we arrived. After settling in, we decided to go for two orders of their ramen and one order each for their okonomiyaki as well as their Hiroshima-yaki. The ramen was honestly average- fare you can get just about anywhere in NYC. Their okonomiyaki was surprisingly well done. The cabbage was light and provided a good balance against the okonomiyaki sauce, and the tempura crisp added a nice texture to the bite. The hiroshimayaki was also interesting with the added noodles, but was a bit too heavy on the sauce for my tastes. Service was not provided- you order up front and there's a spot for you to throw out the trash and stack your plates at the end of it.
