The wait staff were friendly, however their menu is very limited. Everything is a la darte, which can make your meal expensive. If you go for lunch or dinner, you can only get a burger, chicken or salad. The breakfast menu is also very limited, and I think it's ridiculous to pay $8 for two ordinary pancakes. We sat in the front and the problem is that you order everything at the front so people are everywhere crowding your table. This restaurant could be good, but it has a long way to go. read more

I'm so glad this little diner opened up in the neighborhood ! The space is nicely done, the food is simple and well prepared and they serve some great negroni's on tap amongst other seasonal beverages. They've got excellent breakfast sandwiches served up on potato rolls and a great burger for later in the day. To top it off they stock and serve metropolis coffee, which is some of Chicago's best. I love this place. I go here multiple times a week as it's way too close to my house, and I am seriously addicted to their Nutella lattes and donuts! The donuts are a super unique flavor and this is the only Dollop they are served in (honestly like.. I would say these are literally the best donuts I've ever tasted. They melt in your mouth - try one! You will thank me) there are definitely some items on their menu I still need to try, but it's been really cool seeing this place grow since they first opened! My experience was horrible. My fried and I walked in and nobody helped us for 5 minutes. When somebody did, we related that this our first time. They said ok and asked what we wanted to order. We never got a menu. After we ordered, we had to find a place to sit. The layout was confusing. We didn't know if we should wait for our food or sit and someone would bring the food. Ordered from there and was very excited. I got the chicken and waffle, a side of bacon, and an original donut. When I received my order the donut was not there and the chicken in waffle that comes with "fresh fruit" on it only had two little slivers of strawberries and 3 blueberries, or even exaggerating. Oh Dollop Diner, I really want to love you. My wife and I are big Dollop fans, and have been eagerly awaiting the opening of this diner -- a much-needed addition to Andersonville's offerings -- but so far it's been a bit of a mess.  I have been here four times since it opened nearly a month ago. My first was their first day open; they'd run out of pretty much everything, and I chalked it up to opening-day jitters. The second time, a week later, things seemed to be running a bit more smoothly, but they'd also run out of several items on their already very short menu. I went again last week, and again today; both times they were out of brownies, donuts, AND biscuits (they may have been out of other things too, luckily they had enough stuff that my family could order dinner). Not too sure what's going on with their logistics, a month in. Also, I hate to say it, but the floor is very grimey, and the table we sat at today still had someone's dirty dishes (you're supposed to bus your own, and someone clearly hadn't, but it was right in front of the counter where you order -- someone should have taken care of it rather than just leaving it for the next customer.) There's plenty that's great about the diner: everything we've eaten has been delicious, and they're pretty much nut-free, which is refreshing for a family with nut allergies. But they really need to sort out their management. We'll give it a month and then go back to see if they've ironed things out. Unless it's improved, it'll probably wind up being our last visit. read more

I am so disappointed. I thought I had found the perfect breakfast spot with pancakes and oven roasted potatoes to die for. I brought my friends. I brought my mom. Then I guess success went to someone's head? My last two trips have been terrible. Both times the pancakes weren't properly cooked. Although they were brown on the outside, they were soupy inside. The potatoes weren't brought until after the meal with over. As if the poor quality of the food wasn't enough it was served with a really bad attitude. The first time, I think the server was upset that I didn't want to sit at the stool at the bar, but I find stools without a back support uncomfortable. She was not pleased and it showed. Two nights ago I wanted to try again, thinking this was a one time experience. There were only two other parties in the restaurant (four other customers). It was around 7 pm. They sat our party of three in back and we didn't see a server again. Eventually, I went up front and said we were ready to order. All two or three servers were hanging around the grill/cook in front, chatting. Our initial server eventually came to take our order but he seemed upset that we disrupted his conversation. There was no courtesy extended. Then the food arrived, delivered by another server. The pancakes were again soupy inside. Eventually, a third server came by and I asked if the potatoes were ready. If not, I asked to please don't bring them when we are done eating. Of course they brought them when we were done eating. I did not eat my pancakes. Eventually, the second server returned. I expressed my frustration regarding the pancakes. He response was "word." He was totally uninterested. I then asked to speak with the manager. Gabby, he said, was not there and Ann the owner wasn't there either. For some reason this restaurant was left in the hands of teenagers who did not care a whit about this business. I stopped by the Dollop Diner today (1/9/2019) because I was in the neighborhood and had never been there. The place has the cozy feel of a small local diner from the 60's or 70's I was immediately warmly greeted by the server (Gabby) and sat at the lunch counter/bar. I had a scrambled egg with cheddar cheese, a side of avocado and a side of bacon along with coffee. The egg was very light and fluffy and the bacon was nice and crunchy (the way I like bacon) and had a wonderful maple flavor to it. The coffee was so much better than Sta_ _ _ _ _ s and sitting up at the bar gave me a chance to talk with the barista making the coffee. For dessert I ordered their trifle. I was blown away by the sumptuousness of it. Service throughout was great. I will be back again when I can linger over breakfast and their wine or mixed drinks that they have on tap. read more

The space is small, but warm and always a'buzz with lots of diners. The food: biscuits = a must. Gravy = mediocre. Eggs/omelets/breakfast meats all very good. Breakfast potatoes are AMAZING (if they cook them properly), which brings me to service: it flat out sucks. Maybe it's the layout with tables in the front getting better service as the staff is right there in the kitchen, however drinks are never filled without flagging someone down, only to wait 10+ minutes to have to remind/ask again. I've dined here now 4 x, and each time the service has just been bad. I won't give up on Dollop, but they really need some work with the staffs, both servers and cooks (food is inconsistent). read more

Dollop Diner deserves every star of this five star review. Quick summary on food: coffee is Metropolis brand. It's strong and tasty. Chicken and waffles were perfectly cooked. Waffles come with a dab of sweet/salty butter and they're just a little crispy with some fruit on the side. Fried chicken pieces were also delicious. We got the 2x2x2 for our daughter. Eggs scrambled with cheddar cheese (add an extra $1 for the cheese) and she liked that she could substitute the bacon for the sausage patties. The patties were really really good. She cut them up and ate them bite for bit with the eggs. The 2 pancakes were big and she couldn't finish them all ... even with 2 adults and her brother trying to help. The pancakes were still delicious and perfect. They are kind of thin, like crepes and we liked that for a change of pace. They go perfectly with syrup. We also got the egg sandwich with bacon. It was okay but the other plates were better. Next time we'll get chicken and waffles, and 2 orders of the 2x2x2. The people working were really nice. The ordering process is different than you might be used to, but once you get the hang of it, it's faster and more efficient than usual wait service. Our food came out quickly. We got 3 old fashioned donuts to start and gobbled them up. After we finished our starter donuts a nice waitress came over and gave us samples of the other donuts we didn't try. The maple bacon donut was good. In summary: 2 adults and 2 kids (8 &10) ordered 3 plates + 3 donuts. Food was delicious. Portions were big. We couldn't finish everything. I was there for a dinner pairing with Off Color Brewing beers. I had a Manhattan that was a special on top (which was good). The food was excellent. The first course was a broccoli beer cheese soup. It tasted great and I was surprised at how well the nut (I can't remember if it was walnut) that was added really added to it and created a good contrast. The second course was a choice and I choose the salmon and farro. The salmon was excellent (with lemon fraiche, if I recall correctly). But something about the farro was amazing. Really, REALLY good. The last course was a chocolate hazelnut tart that was rich, but not overly so. All of these were paired with Off Color beer, which is generally excellent craft beer. The atmosphere is pretty casual, but the service is great and the food/drink is fantastic. What was really impressive is that I ended up talking to someone who was asking me what I thought. Turns out, it was the owner. I think it's a great sign that someone asks for opinions of their establishments, but ask anonymously at first to get a real opinion. This place is No Smoking. Rod Serling will never set foot in here. It can't be the Twilight Zone. It's real!!!" And everybody was so nice. I really wanted to like Dollop Diner. The atmosphere was cute and they had a really nice little patio out back. However, it was way too expensive for the portions offered and the service provided. I ordered pancakes with a side of eggs and hashbrowns to split with my girlfriend and it was almost 17 dollars. I was fine paying that amount since it was for two people but the pancakes I received were very small and flat. There were also only two of them. I wasn't a fan of the buzzer system. If I'm paying that much for pancakes, I'd rather have them brought to my table. My pancakes were also listed as coming with "seasonal fruit." There was no fruit provided and when I asked, I was told that it was already in the pancakes. I didn't see any but I was offered a tiny cup of sliced strawberries instead. The food tasted fine but it wasn't anything special, and my friend's chicken & waffles looked disappointing at best. Again, too much money for my food to be served on a lunchroom tray. I'm willing to give this place another chance but I think I'll wait until they have themselves figured out before I go back. read more

This Diner is truly hit or miss with food and service. Each time I have hoped would be better than the last. On my last visit there were pieces of something dark floating my water glass. Ick. The waitress never came by after I got my food to ask if everything was okay? did I want another drink? did I need more water?.. Nothing. Crickets. In addition, the waitress looked like a total slob. Not really the look you want for someone bringing you food. Had to flag someone else down to get the check at the end. Not worth the risk of another disappointing experience. I'd say we really had more of a two-star experience, but I'm giving three stars since they're new and I'm hopeful the owners will improve based on their customer reviews First the good stuff: Potatoes were tasty and crispy, coffee was brewed to perfection, staff was friendly albeit low-key, and the decor is on point. Now the not-so-good stuff: The food needs some tweaking. Most of our order had an overall oily taste to it, and not just the fried stuff. I think they use the same oil to fry both the potatoes and the doughnuts, which gives the doughnuts an unpleasant aftertaste. The waffle was also oily and salty. The biscuits were tough although the flavor was fine. As someone who makes homemade biscuits, I think they just overworked the dough so that's an easy fix. As other reviewers have written, the whole "order at the counter" layout is confusing, odd, and not at all in line with the benefits and vibe of a neighborhood diner, and the bus your own table thing is annoying especially because the stands are poorly placed and filled with dirty dishes. They would really do well with table service. Another thing they need to address is the ventilation. It's a small space with an open kitchen so that's understandably a struggle, but when you need to shower after eating a meal because you smell like fried food, that's a problem. Overall, I'm confident they'll take their customers' feedback to heart and make some changes. They're new and it makes sense that they'll need to iron out a few kinks so I'm willing to give them another shot. read more

Great location, super friendly (diverse!!) staff, cute, clean space with great artwork and plenty of natural light. Love Metropolis (local!!) coffee, and the little nooks you can settle into.
