This is our fave sushi spot in Hayes Valley. It's a small hole-in-a-wall that's popular with the locals so it gets full quickly. They don't have a large selection, but their menu is pretty diverse. The sashimi and nigiri are always fresh and light, with a melt-in-your-mouth consistency. Also try their appetizers and crudos -- which include both conventional and innovative selections. Narrowly missed the lunch hour! They're efficient with their business hours, and close from 2:30-5:30. I quickly ordered the Domo roll, figuring that the namesake sushi roll had to be good, but was very intrigued by their lunch special of two choosings served over rice with lettuce salad and miso soup for the equivalent price of the roll. Namesake roll: Domo (4.5/5), basically a fancy baked California Roll with unagi and spicy mayo. I don't like TOO spicy, and there was just enough kick to satisfy my wimpy taste buds. Plating wasn't the prettiest since it was baked on foil and then transferred to the plate on the foil. Utility s understandable, but it didn't look the best. Cute and cozy sushi place in Hayes Valley. My sister and I were so happy we stumbled upon Domo right before it became crowded for dinner. We grabbed a seat at the sushi bar and were able to place our order directly through the sushi chefs. Service was prompt and our food came out quickly. We tried the following three dishes: 1. *Fried Baby Octopus* (chalkboard special) - this was amazing, probably my favorite dish out of the three. Succulent baby octopus fried to a perfect crisp with some spicy mayo and micro screens scattered on the plate, what more could you ask for in an appetizer? 2. *Fire Cracker Balls* - Loved this. A perfect blend of spicy tuna, crispiness, tobiko, sriracha, and spicy mayo. 3. *Castro Roll* - It's nice to find a place that uses 'real' crab instead of 'imitation' crab in their rolls. This was decent but definitely over-shadowed by our appetizers. I would probably go for something else on the menu next time. All-in-all a tasty meal--we plan on returning soon to try the crudos, toro, and other chalkboard specials! Domo is currently my favorite sushi place in San Francisco. I like the fancy, over the top, unauthentic rolls with more ingredients than you can count, and this restaurant's namesake roll, the Domo Roll, fit the bill perfectly. It's got everything you might want in your sushi roll all mixed together: salmon, crab, scallops, avocado, spicy mayo, bbq unagi glaze, tobiko & scallions. It's visually appealing and extremely tasty. Oddly, the salmon on top is baked, not raw or smoked, which I was surprised to learn works well. I also tried one of the specials. I don't remember all the details, but it had a crunchy nutty exterior (crushed almonds perhaps?) and scallops inside. It was nearly as wonderful as the Domo roll. My boyfriend prefers the simple classics; he ordered a california roll and a tuna roll and he liked them both as well. I'm usually left wanting more after dining on sushi, but I was pretty stuffed after leaving Domo; both of my rolls were very filling. I'll be back. read more

Best sushi I've ever had. Hands down. The restaurant is TINY. It can hold about 15 people max, so expect a bit of a wait since they don't take reservations or call-ins. We came at about 7:50pm on a Thursday night and were seated at 8:30pm. Since there are so few patrons seated at once, the wait is very dependent on when people sat down. Sign your name on the sheet out front to get on the wait list. I always have trouble keeping track of what I eat at sushi restaurants, so I know I'm forgetting a few items and probably mistaking one or two, but here's the breakdown to the best of my ability: My Top 3 Favorites: + Small Crudos. These are little spoonfuls of goodness. We got one Uni (Sea Urchin) and one Ankimo (Monkfish Liver Pate). I tried the sea urchin and was blown away. Flavorful, delicious. My date seemed to enjoy the monkfish liver pate. + Hamachi Carpachio, but they were out of Hamachi, so my date had the brilliant idea to ask for Butterfish instead. SO GOOD. My favorite thing all night. + Fried octopus. A mound of little octopuses on top of arugula. I didn't think I liked octopus, but I was so very wrong. This competed with the Carpachio for my favorite item all night. Other Deliciously Fresh Items: + Miso soup. TL;DR: get to this restaurant early to enjoy unique sushi :) The music is a little loud but what that they do play is amazing and adds to how fantastic the atmosphere of this small intimate restaurant is. The wait for a table can be a little long because of how limited their seating is, so be sure to get there early! I think it's really cool how the menu is on one side of the wall which is a mirror and also in front of you. In addition, these rolls were very creative and nothing like anything I had had before. There's normally only one waiter so please be patient and courteous. The food comes out fairly quickly and I felt like I could eat 10 rolls! At first I was kind of shocked at how small it was but was glad we were the first ones there. Small places are fun as long as you're not the one waiting for days. I was craving sushi and then yelped this place. Pretty good reviews for their fish taco and Domo roll, so I decided to check it out! Not bad!!! Their fish tacos are delicious! Solid place for sushi and nigiri. You might walk by and not realize you passed it. No tables, bar counter and window counter seats with stools. No wait 6pm on a Tuesday. Large 600ml bottle of Sapporo for $9 with small glasses provided. Hamachi Carpaccio was seared and pretty tasty. I'm used to cooler in temperature and non-seared carpaccio, so this was a new twist that I did fancy! It was flavorful and the jalapeño added a great little kick to my taste buds. Tried two different nigiris which were both delicious in their own ways. The walu nigiri aka butter fish, somewhat melted in my mouth and also seemed to have an actual buttery after taste! It was quite delightful. The other nigiri which was a special on the wall, was the Albacore Toro which was $9 for two pieces, solid. My favorite roll was the Saba Hit...I didn't know mackerel could be so tasty on a roll. The combination of the fresh ginger, avocado, and shiso flavors really blended well together...refreshing too. Also tried the Domo roll which I thought was mediocre. Would pass on that next time, it was essentially a less saucy and smaller lion king roll. I love food here. I have been coming to Domo for the last 6 years. The service was great always very welcoming and professional. I like their Wagyu roll and daikon salad. It was pretty good. Compare with other japanese restaurant witin that area the price was not bad at all. Eventhough the restaurant is a bit too small but i still enjoy the atmosphere here. There is no reservation so if you are very hungry on friday or saturday night, this is not the place for you ;(. The wait can take from 30 mins to an hour ish. There is A LOT of sushi in SF and to be honest I have not been to too many yet, but so far the place right around the corner, Domo, has taken the cake! The menu is different enough to be interesting but not too different to be frustrating. The wait can be tough at times, but again, I live around the corner so not a big deal for me. Anything with seafood you really cannot go wrong. The roles, nigiri, appetizers are all outstanding and I definitely encourage you to try something you haven't before.... except... the Kobe beef roll. Great in idea, but poor in execution. I should have taken a look at Yelp before since I see others have said the same. It just didn't hit the mark but that's okay, because the rest of the menu is outstanding. Basically I'm obsessed with the spinach Hawaiian poke bowl 7/10 for me needed a little more punch of flavor but meat was great Crunchy Cali roll: would be perfect if it wasn't hot! The service was decent but the best part of all is the food itself. We had Crunchy California, Fire Ball and Temptation Roll, plus Chef's Sushi selection. They're all good. This review has three stars for a few reasons. 1. The disastrous Kobe beef roll 2. The wait Do NOT get the Kobe Beef roll. We tried it out of pure curiosity and didn't eat any more than the initial piece we first tried. The idea behind this roll is unique but the execution is a disaster. The beef is chewy beyond belief and overall flavorless. The inside is just avocado and another veggie, while the kobe beef wraps around it like nori. NOT tasty. Not worth it. The wait is 30 min - 1 hr on weekends at dinner time. Not the worst but I now feel like it's not totally worth the wait due to the Kobe beef roll partially (I'm just weirdly offended by it) and nothing incredible about the sushi that stood out to me otherwise. And with sushi restaurant prices- you want something to stand out. Pros: The Domo roll is a hot roll with salmon that is super tasty. The Spicy Hulk is a Gluten Free roll with spicy tuna and cucumber wrap. These two were probably my favorite out of the five rolls we tried. Both had really great flavors and textures. Had dinner with a couple friends at Domo and really enjoyed it. Will definitely return when plans call for a small get-together. The restaurant seats 20, maybe, and has a casual, homey vibe. Not too many patrons meant attentive service. We ordered approximately ten things off the menu - primarily rolls, but a couple apps as well. Most were hits for us, with a couple so-so items. Unfortunately, didn't try any nigiri or sashimi, so can't comment on those offerings. Won't go through everything, but a few call-outs below. 1/ GET THE FISH TACOS. Really unique and was the highlight of the meal imo. A couple slices of lightly seared fish, served on top of a fried piece of seaweed, garnished with some other accouterment. Should've ordered this x2 in hindsight. 2/ Kobe Beef Roll: Wasn't sure if I liked it or not. I think I did? A pretty interesting idea, where beef serves as a wrap for the roll. Would probably recommend 60% of the time, 100% of the time. 3/ Uni and Scallop Small Crudos: Probably the low-light of the meal. Fresh, but nothing special. read more

In New York City, my former home, there's a delightful sushi joint by the name of Domodomo. So stepping into Domo, a hole-in-the-wall at the intersection of Laguna and Linden, I couldn't help but think, "will this only be half as good?" As it turns out, not exactly. Like the city as a whole, it's about two-thirds of its east coast counterpart. Calling Domo a hole-in-the-wall is simply a turn of phrase. So apologies for any confusion. It's actually inside of a hole in the wall. Once you enter through the restaurant's door, the space itself is similar (though not identical) to other restaurant interiors you've seen. There is bar seating along the window and a sushi bar on the back wall. We sat there. I tried three rolls. The first was a special called "Daddy." It consisted of green onion tempura, avocado, shiso, tobiko and ocean trout*. This roll was the best and I really liked it. Go, Dad! Next was the "Domo," a ~baked~ California roll topped with salmon and scallop. This roll was the second best, and I liked it. Last came the "Kobe Beef" roll, containing Kobe beef, avocado and ginger. The roll was actually wrapped in the beef, which was a hoot. This roll was my third favorite, and I didn't really like it. Whereas seaweed generally succeeds in holding a roll together, the Kobe Beef roll easily fell apart. The Kobe Beef roll was less integrous than a seaweed-wrapped roll. ------ *Curiously, ocean trout is commonly referred to as steelhead, and is often confused for salmon ("Sah-mon"). Though they taste and look similar, the ocean trout (or steelhead), is not actually a salmon but rather a trout. More curiously, the ocean trout (still the same as a steelhead) is the same species as the rainbow trout. When the freshwater rainbow trout enters the salty ocean, it is then, by definition, a steelhead (or ocean trout). The steelhead is simply an anadromous form of rainbow trout that has migrated to the ocean. If this reminds you of the movie Air Force One, it's for good reason: the Air Force's VC-25 plane's call sign only becomes the titular "Air Force One" when it is carrying the the POTUS. In this 1997 flick, the President is Medal of Honor winner James Marshall, played (spectacularly) by Harrison Ford. read more
