I was really excited to try this spot but unfortunately it was a disappointing visit. Maybe just have some kinks to work out? I'll probably give it another shot because the bar seemed fun but the (upstairs) bartenders seemed overwhelmed and the food wasn't very good. We tried six different tacos, all just kind of OK. We were underwhelmed. I'm from San Diego, where I grew up with real Mexican food. This is just eh. We ordered a few different tacos (which were tiny) and a churro. The tacos were OK. Nothing to write about (thus the short review). The churro was not crisp and lacked flavor. Overall, OK for the area but overpriced for what you get. UPDATE: we went back for more and the second time around was better; we'll even be back. We ordered almost every taco; wanted to give them a fair review. Our favs were: fried avocado, pomegranate glazed skirt steak, mexican short rib and jerk shrimp. Seems like the tacos got bigger since we last ate here. And their guacamole was great (more creamy/smooth than chunky, but with cilantro!). We still have not tried a desert that's well-rounded, but we did really enjoy the nutella banana split portion of the taco (taco shell was not crisp/crunchy). We topped it off with a mixed drink (very good) and a tequila (OK, but lime was accidentally squeezed into the tequila even though I asked for it neat; and it was served in a whiskey glass meant for whiskey on the rocks). They do, however, have a lot of very good tequilas. Overall, better experience compared to the first time and we are now fans. Worth a shot if you're in town. read more

Came here to try it out after hearing good things! Great surf and turf taco and empanadas. My boyfriend got the sweet potato and quinoa taco - loved it. We chose the fried Oreos for dessert.. Don't make the "mistake" we did and get 2 orders (thinking for 2 Oreos) - they do come with 3 Oreos each! Soo good and worth it though. Will be back! read more

I chose this place on a whim. It was a great choice. I never heard of this place before seeing it on Yelp but it was a hot day something like 100 degrees so tacos sounded like a great happy hour food to go along with drinks. First, the place is a cute little place nothing overly fancy but it has everything you need. Second, the food was fantastic. I had six tacos and empanadas. I do think I was overcharged because there was a happy hour deal on the tacos but I take the blame I had the receipt and didn't notice until I was driving home. The only knock I have of the place is it was so hot in the building. It was an excessively hot day so maybe it was just like that in all the places that day. A friend and I came here for dinner for the first time tonight, I can say we will definitely will be returning! Our server Carlos was the absolute BEST!!! He made great recommendations and was beyond helpful and friendly. We ordered about 6 tacos in total they were buy 2 get one free, can't beat that. They were small but good and tasty. I ordered a Mexican mule for my drink it wasn't too bad, I probably should have gotten a Margarita like Carlos suggested but i wanted to try something new. Have been to Don Taco a few times and have had good service, a good view, and some good tacos. Recently they changed their menu to include some tacos which are more 'experimental' and don't have the typical fillings you'd find in tacos. I ordered a few of these since the more expected tacos on the top of the menu were decent that I had tried in the past. I tried a few of these experimental tacos including the Korean taco, the fried shrimp taco, and the buffalo chicken taco. These really did not hit the mark, especially the korean taco which was so overly salted and non cooked well. This is a decent taco joint but stay away from the more experimental tacos which taste more like different meat dishes being placed in a dry corn tortilla. read more

Excellent, attentive service, wide variety of small , tasty tacos that you won't find elsewhere, hearty chicken tortilla soup with lots of chicken chunks, very generous portions of delicious guacamole sauce and salsa . We ordered the small guacamole and were surprised at the large portion. Likewise, there was a large quantity of yummy salsa to go with the chips and salsa that we ordered. We need a Don Taco in Los Angeles. We have been to many similar eateries, but this was outstanding. And oh, the Salted Caramel Tres Leches for dessert was excellent. read more

Came here for the second time the other day and I had a terrible experience. The hostess, whom I believe was the manager, was extremely cold with us. Our waiter was fine but there was zero communication between the waiters and the managers. We asked for something and after around 10 minutes received double because there was no communication. The carnitas taco had a foul taste and the fried chicken taco was dreadful. I literally lost my appetite after eating it. I guess this place is hit or miss. read more

I enjoyed my visit to Don Taco. I was greeted immediately and took a seat at the bar. The bartender, Kaitlyn, was very nice. We chatted throughout my time there but she also made it a priority to serve the other guests at the bar. She's a natural. The food was great. Perfect portions and the prices are reasonable. With the wide variety of tequila there, I wish I could have had a drink but I had to get back to work, sober. Highly recommend the waffle battered fried Oreos. This place is pretty good. Tacos are really small you'll need like 4-5 to actually fill you up. In terms of flavor, great flavor, I'd recommend their carnitas (can't go wrong with a classic), the land & sea (shrimp has a weirdish texture but still good), and the Bulgogi. However, their drinks are bomb dot com, the Mexican mule is amazing, their passion fruit frozen margaritas and classic margs are great also. In general the atmosphere was amazing, full of locals and young professionals going to happy hours after work/some tourists just visiting, great costumer service. My friend and I went to this place once on a Sunday afternoon. Not busy, which was nice. We ordered 4 tacos each, a Mexican corn on the cob for myself, and a large guacamole and chips to share. Having been to other taco places with the same 1-2 bite concept, I quite liked these tacos. There was a nice variety of choices, ranging from chicken to Korean bulgogi to breakfast tacos. This is close by so I stopped and went to the upstairs bar (should have stayed downstairs). This is Happy Hour (I am closing out tab 6:13pm). I do not like people eating while they take my order. I'm so excited about this restaurant. Everything we had here was excellent. Our favorite tacos were the buffalo chicken and the sriracha chicken. My husband also real enjoyed the mahi mahi taco. The price point is so affordable. The drinks looked awesome. We will definitely be trying those next visit. We also had the deep fried oreos. My husband thought they were great! Great new addition to the Old Town food and bar scene! Upstairs was packed on the first weekend night of the NCAA tournament. We shared an assortment of tacos, plus ceviche and chicken empanadas. All were great, as were the cocktails. Drinks took a minute to make due to the crowd along the bar and our empanadas went MIA for a short bit, but nothing that won't be worked out as the staff finds its rhythm. Looking forward to a reurn visit and awarding that elusive fifth star. :) read more
