I come to Doña Maria fairly often. For me it is a frequent study spot. They have good food, including some very affordable A-La-Cart menu items such as Sopes and Tamales, and they have café de olla on the weekend and decent light-roast coffee during the week, which I ordinarily sip while I study. The ladies who work at this restaurant are all very nice and they tolerate me sitting with my headphones and laptop, never begrudging me refills on coffee. I once ordered the Caldo and it was a nice experience and generously portioned, but it isn't good study food! I love to order Sopes and a large side of refried beans here. The Sopes are really nicely presented and delicious, piled high with pico de gallo, avocado, sour cream and cotija on top of the beans and meat. So good! I ordered the vegetable enchiladas suizas here once. They were ok, but I like spicier enchiladas. This restaurant has pretty solid and authentic food and wonderful service. I am a regular customer and I only hope that I tip them well enough to compensate them for the table time and coffee refills! read more

They have menudo on the menu! I need to come back to try it! The chips and salsa are delicious! The salsa has a nice mild spice to it that is very pleasant and really kickstarts the palate for the rest of the meal. I ordered a fish taco and shrimp taco. The fish was fresh, flaky, and had a nice grilled flavor to it. The batter wasn't overpowering. The taco was very well balanced with the amount of pico and cabbage to fish. The shrimp was snappy and tasted fresh. Same fillings as the fish taco. Overall enjoyable. Of the two I preferred the fish taco and would come back for more! read more

Tried this spot for lunch and had a great burrito! Food: 5/5 I got a super carne asada burrito wet with red and green sauce. The burrito was large, had a good amount of meat and I enjoyed the green and red sauce. Customer Service: 5/5 I ordered it take out, so there is not much to report on the customer service. However, the staff were very nice and they did offer to add extra salsa cups. Price: 3/5 The price was a little high in my opinion. I paid almost $19 for the burrito and there were no chips with the order. Ambiance: 3/5 The restaurant is clean and well kept. It's great for a quick lunch or dinner. On a whim and because we were starving we decided to try Dona Maria's shrimp burritos which were about 15 bucks a pop. All my previous experience with burritos comes from the section of Mountain View known as the "Burrito Triangle". There are three excellent burrito places which can accurately described as holes in the wall.However we saw cops and other civil servants eating there in great numbers so we thought that was a good sign. It was indeed. California is apparently well known as the home of the wet burrito and it's delicious even if it's not really authentic. Dona Maria's burritos are very very good although it doesn't climb to the heights of a wet burrito. It's a decent size. If you have a smaller appetite it is two servings. If your appetite is much larger then one serving. It came with a salsa verde and a red spicy salsa. Both were reasonably spicy and had some delicious kick. While the ambience is a bit beat up I would not call it a hole in the wall. It's homey and comfortable. read more

I came into Dona Maria after a hike and I was craving a breakfast burrito. I looked at their menu and they had one that looked good for about $13. They were open early too, which was nice. I went up to the cash register and the woman working there was on the phone and there wasn't anyone else to help. The place is neat and clean, though not especially warm. Service was fast and friendly. Chips and salsa cost extra. The salsa was similar to pico de gallo; it was very good. The chips on the other hand had a very odd and off-putting taste. I ordered the camarones ala diabla with corn tortillas; my fiend had the enchiladas suizas con pollo, The food was well-prepared and tasty, and the portions were quite large. The also have a chicken mole on the menu, which I will try next time! I also ordered a margarita. At $16, it was pretty pricey, but it was also large, and pretty good. As a regular I love their tacos and salsa. Food is great never oily but the service has gone down. I used to go regularly at least twice a week. Until an incident a few weeks ago. When I visited for dinner the server forgot to close my check. The next time I visited the manager belligerently accused me of not paying my bill. She yelled at me refused to serve me until I pulled up my bank statement and showed her that I did pay on the prior date. After realizing her mistake she served me with my food and gave me a complimentary coke but it didn't make up for the emotional distress of the confrontation so I don't see myself returning to this location. Mm... Carne asada burritos! It's been tough finding great Mexican food at affordable prices in the Bay Area. Pre and post inflation scaries. Dona Maria was a great find. The food is good - prices vary but for the burritos they are on par with most other places. For a $10.95 grande burrito you get a good sized tortilla stuffed full of rice, beans, meat, cheese, avocado, onions, and cilantro. I personally couldn't really taste the cheese though, so not sure if they skimped a bit there. The avocado was buried in the middle of the burrito but still present. There was a good amount of meat - maybe a 1:1:1 ratio of rice:beans:meat. For the area, this is a solid place to grab a burrito that will mostly fill you up. If you're really hungry, might be good to grab some sides too. I would come back again. read more

Rounding my stars up since I'd give Dona Maria a 4.5 star rating overall. Got the potato tacos combination plate (~$17) which comes with three potato tacos, Mexican rice, and beans. The potato tacos were fantastic. The shells were deep fried and crispy. The potatoes were both soft and had a nice mouthfeel. The fresh lettuce, tomatoes, and cheese on top put the icing on the cake. The Mexican rice and beans could've been better. They weren't quite as flavorful as some of the other rice and beans I've had elsewhere. They weren't bad though. I wish the prices were cheaper. I do miss paying $2 for potato tacos, but with inflation it is what it is. I also wish they still provided free chips and salsa, but I get it too that nowadays certain luxuries are no more :-( Anyway, for the Bay Area, Dona Maria is pretty good quality Mexican food. It can be difficult finding a solid Mexican food joint, so I'm glad to have found this place. Eating out in general has gotten expensive so I can't fault them for being a bit more expensive than I'd prefer - at least not too much. I'll be back to try other options. read more

We came here for lunch today and it was just okay.. Pretty average Mexican food and didn't have much seasoning in either of our entrees or in the salsa. It was all pretty bland. I ordered a carne asada quesadilla - the carne asada had a nice char on it but lacked flavor and needed salt and more cheese. One of our orders was incorrect too. Dona Maria, please do the neighborhood and your clearly miserable staff a favor: just shut down already so maybe a new place with edible food and polite staff might move in to our neighborhood. I just read quite a few other reviews noting experiences just like mine: Argumentative staff unable to take simple orders, sloppy dry icky microwaved food, and inconsistency all around. If you order by telephone, you can forget about getting what you actually ordered. Usually, in their deadpan way, they simply redo the order. Today, though, the woman actually argued with me, defensively insisting that I ordered something I would never order. With a shocking and superior attitude, she said, "Well you're gonna pay more!" when I asked them to give me what I know for certain I ordered. Couldn't believe it. I walked out, stunned. We only ever went there in a pinch, if we had busy days and didn't mind slop for lunch, and because there aren't any other Mexican choices in the immediate area, but we will NEVER go again. I've actually written them off before and not gone for a year plus at a time, but this is the last straw. The food is consistently less than mediocre, not at all fresh, and now you can add blatant, pissy attitude to my list of complaints. Seriously, guys, aren't you embarrassed to serve such slop? Stopped by here for the first time during Covid. The place is only takeout and they have good distancing rules. The entire place is very clean and Lysol is used for everything. They have multiple hand sanitizers available. I had a chorizo con huevos breakfast burrito. Very good with a soft tortilla and flavorful ingredients. The salsas really make it good. The green is hotter and spicy. The red is more spicy but no heat. I don't know why this place doesn't get higher ratings. It's a great place for a quick meal and excellent cheap eat. I was new to the area and came here for a Carne Asada burrito! My lunch is only 30 minutes and I received my order in 5 minutes, very efficient! The burrito was pretty good, and the red salsa has a nice heat kick to it! I love asada that has nice charred edges as it adds a smokiness to the flavor! I really have no complaints, and the only for a 3 star was because I've had 4 star and 5 star burritos, and this was a 3 for me, but they deserve my business in the soon future. read more

When this place was first opened, we used to go there often and loved it... Just went in today to ask a question regarding my food allergy and they couldn't be bothered. The answer was quite vague and then they brushed me off because they obviously were too busy. I was the only one standing at the counter by the way. My food allergy question is something that I ask anytime I go out and waitresses and waiters will kindly ask the cooks if they don't know. Sometimes they can cook with an alternative, and sometimes not so I just skip that particular food item. It's not really a big deal. I just need simple information. My issue is nothing more than the offhanded and rude way I was treated. If she had smiled and looked at me and said exactly the same words I am sure I would not be posting here.
