La Cueva Tostada Salad - Shrimp
Monica W.

I've been going to La Cueva with my boys after the Saratoga Farmer's Market for more than a decade, and it still has very good and inexpensive Mexican food. The service has definitely improved over the years, and I'm very happy that they survived, if not thrived, during the pandemic. We were here again and sat in the small outside patio, which is utilitarian, but clean. The shrimp burritos were big and full of shrimp for only $14 (what a yummy deal)! I had the tostada salad with shrimp, and it was good, but not great. Not enough lettuce and the one fried corn tortilla, while crisp and delicious, was not enough to for the large salad. Still one of our go-to Mexican restaurants, and we will definitely be back soon.

I ordered a steak burrito and they gave me fish , I don't know if they busy , blind or having a hard time but that was weird.. it was to go so no way of correction

Chicken Caesar Salad

Huge fan of La Cueva! Their chips and delicious spicy green salsa on the house is always a highlight. I got the Chicken Caesar Salad which came with caramelized onions on top which I really enjoyed. It was quite packed during Sunday lunchtime but we still were able to find an indoor table to enjoy our meal and our food quite quickly, though it did get a bit loud inside.

I've been to La Cueva a handful of times over the past decade and I feel like they've been pretty consistent and reliable! I've only tried their burritos (carne asada and grilled shrimp) and I love the presentation of them - cut diagonally in half and drizzled with sauces. This most recent time, I got the grilled shrimp burrito which was delicious. Some parts were a little overly salty though. I also had a good amount of mango salsa in my burrito, but my friend's exact same grilled shrimp burrito didn't have any mango at all. Luckily they were kind enough to give us a side of mango salsa. Love that they give complimentary chips too! Indoor and outdoor seating both available. Parking in a shared lot, may be limited on crowded days.

Nice flavors, generous portions, wonderful presentation

I love eateries that make you feel so great to be welcomed back! La Cueva is one of those places. The spot is straight back once you enter the parking lot, and once you enter, walk straight back to the counter to order. There's plenty of seating inside and outside, and the team is quick to clear tables to accommodate the steady flow of regulars and newcomers. It is a little long, narrow spot with low lighting...thus its name La Cueva (the cave)! But don't let that daunt you nor your appetite! They are serious about their food and their friendly service, starting with chips and salsa. We've brought multiple guests here (some have lived in Mexico, as well as sought out some good Mexican food in the Bay Area), and La Cueva hits the mark. Oh - and one of my favorite things about this place is that they share parking with my favorite See's Candies store!

My wife and I met up with some close friends for dinner here. Again, it's a popular place and busy during peak hours. The service was nice and friendly! My wife and I split the following... *Fish Taco: choice of fish (Sea bass), grilled with bell peppers, onions, cabbage, avocado sauce & chipotle sauce (4/5). Good fish portion, simply seasoned and delicious. *Tostada De Ceviche: Marinated shrimp in lime juice, ketchup, and topatio sauce, with salsa Fresca and avocado slices (4/5). *Agua Fresca Watermelon (3.5/5). *Seafood Plate: served with rice, beans, and mango salsa. - Enchiladas de Marisco (3.5/5). The sauce was yummy. One friend ordered his favorite *Two Fish Taco Plate: fish tacos served with rice, beans, mango salsa, choice of fish (Sea bass) grilled with bell peppers, onions, cabbage, avocado sauce & chipotle sauce. Additional Fish Taco added and an agua fresca watermelon. He also took home a large green salsa. Our other friend ordered a *Sea Bass fish taco. *Carnitas Burrito: includes rice, beans, sour cream, cheese, guacamole, salsa Fresca, chipotle sauce. He liked the food. Complimentary chips and salsa. House-made chips were nice and fresh. The green salsa has a kick to it, so if you cannot eat spicy things, best to avoid. My wife can't handle spicy so she ate the tortilla chips plain.

Got the shrimp tacos + shrimp burrito take out which came with some chips and green salsa. The burrito was pretty good I enjoyed the sauces inside of it . Decently priced service was good just wish portions were a little bigger but overall the shrimp quality was good

Wet seabass burrito

La Cueva shares a small parking lot with a few other businesses. We walked here so didn't need to look for parking. Though if you come during peak hours, it might be a little difficult. We came right at opening and ordered a wet seabass burrito, which you can get with both red and green salsas! You order at the counter and they bring your order to you. You get complimentary chips and salsa, already a plus in my book! The salsas they offered were delicious! We decided to split the burrito, which was a good call. I definitely could not have finished this on my own. The flavors were very nice and I love that they include guac in your standard burrito. Customer service was great and everything came out quickly. Would absolutely return!

Extra Salsa and Chips

Tried this place recently and was happy to see lots of vegetarian options. I went with the vegetarian burrito and really enjoyed it. It had a flavorful filling, crispy tortilla, and a mango salsa inside that added some tang. The chips on the side were fresh, and the green salsa had a distinct sting to it. Staff was friendly, food came out fast, and the space was clean. Plenty of indoor booth seating but had minimal outdoor seating. Much more functional than atmospheric as it had minimal decor. Solid food and quick service, I'd definitely come back and would recommend it to others looking for a casual bite.

Fish tacos
William S.

Really liked that they had unlimited chips with a really good spicy salsa. Tacos were solid and their seafood is pretty decent but I think my tacos could've used more salsa or some guac or something to brighten them up.

This was a decent Mexican place. Their green salsa was good and they gave us a good amount of chips for free. I got tacos. I thought they were standard. The servers there were also nice. There was just some seating, not too much.

Carne Asada Fries (Nacho Fries with meat)
Ethan A.

Was on the hunt for some carne asada fries and stumbled upon this place. The fries themselves were fried very well and all the toppings were great. There were some chewy pieces of steak though. The Al pastor Gordita was alright. I'm not too sure if I'd get it again since it didn't really have a wow factor to it. The green sauce they serve with chips, now that has a huge wow factor. That sauce was incredible and I would absolutely put it in anything. The horchata was creamy and sweet. Service was super nice. Inside, there's about 20 seats inside and about 10 seats outside. It seems like parking can get a busy in that particular plaza.

Chicken and veggie tacos
Shirin B.

I wish someone told me about La cueva earlier than when I found out about it, because this place is absolutely amazing. Really good tacos and burritos, La Cueva does not miss one bit. I got their veggie and chicken tacos and they were so fresh and flavorful. The best part is the fresh chips and green salsa they give. They also have fire burritos and enchiladas so I will be coming back again and again for their authentic Mexican eats!

Fast food is overpriced and unhealthy. So what are your options? Look no further, because Los Pericos (The Parakeets) has one of the best family meal deals in the Bay Area! It's extremely affordable and delicious. The family meals include tacos with your choice of meat, beans (refried or whole), Mexican rice, salsa, and your choice of corn or flour tortillas. They offer four sizes: 1 lb, 2 lb, 3 lb, and 4 lb of meat. They also have fresh carrot and orange juice, which I always enjoy while waiting for my order. I've also had the wet burrito version of this and it was delicious, but I wanted something more portable for the park. We were most excited about dessert and decided to share the churros and Tres leches. It was a nice touch that the churros and Tres leches did not come plain, a little pizzazz since they were both served with berries, whipped cream, and a cajeta style sauce. Both of the desserts were so good and a perfect touch of sweetness.

With over 900 reviews, I had high hopes--and I'm glad to say my meal delivered. Food (4.5 stars) + The two-taco combo (about $13) was a win for me. I chose carnitas and adobada (that saucy red mole-like one!). The adobada was rich, flavorful, and unique, while the carnitas, although a bit dry, had a nice smokiness. The sweet bite of the onions really balanced the tacos--maybe a touch more cilantro and onions next time. + Kat's carnitas burrito was bright red and juicy (I found it perfect, even if she thought it was a tad dry). I think they put some similar yummy sauce as the adobada. Generous portion, meaty, and delicious. + Will's carne asada quesadillas were cheesy and tender. He found them bland, but I thought they were fine. Plus, the generous guac portion (even if it needed a squeeze of lime) was a nice touch. + The salsa bar deserves a shout-out. Mixing the spicy corn-bean blend with hot salsa and pico de gallo? That's a flavor bomb right there. - Carne asada nachos, while generous, fell flat. There was also quite a generous portion of guacamole along with sour cream. My only complaint is the meat lacked that smokiness or char of most asadas. It felt bland--almost taste boiled. I took the meat home to doctor it up! Service/Ambiance (4 stars) + I put this under service because I'm a fan of the unexpected and getting chips with our meal was a nice touch. Bonus Star! ~ You order at the counter, grab your own drinks. Staff were minimal but efficient enough for what it was. It's casual--not full service, but they get the job done. ~ Ambiance is simple--nothing fancy. You've got a salsa bar, a drink station, and it's very much a "grab a table" kind of place. Overall, for a quick, affordable sit-down Mexican spot, it hit the spot for me. My friends rated it 3.5 stars, but I loved it. I'd come back for the carnitas burrito and salsa bar alone!

It was relatively empty, with only one other party seated at the time. Service was friendly and quick, and we got our food pretty quickly after ordering. It's got a quaint hole in the wall kind of vibe, but was still clean - though not very air conditioned. We missed it, but there was a salsa bar in the corner near the entrance. We were served complimentary salsa and chips - nice refreshing, tomatoey and lightly spicy salsa. We also got guacamole, which you could tell was freshly made, chunky and refreshing. Glad we got this, because it helped cut through how heavy the molcajete de mariscos we got was. We were NOT expecting how large the mocajete is - this can probably be split across 3 if not 4 people. It comes out boiling hot, and with 3 tortillas, and a side of beans and rice. When we ordered, they asked us if we would want more tortillas since it comes with only 3 - we didn't even finish the 3 it came with. The sauce was tasty, tomatoey and spicy, and it was chock full of mussels, squid, sooo many shrimp, a whole filet of fried fish, and other goodies - unfortunately most of the seafood was pretty dry/overcooked. It came out to about $60 for the two of us. Overall, the mocajete was fun to try, but I think next time I'd try some tacos or a burrito if I were to come back.
