Ok if you are in a hurry but dingy looking and way too expensive. I hardly ever shop in that store. Not recommended.

They made sure to check if we needed tartar sauce and ketchup. The tuna sandwich was stuffed with tuna ona nice tasting roll. I am usually worried about ordering tuna sandwiches because I do not like the fishy taste. This must have been quality Tuna since it was excellent! I got it all as takeout and they stated 15 minutes. The seafood is fresh and the portions are a good size, but every time I go in there it seems to be run by a group of high schoolers... Over the phone orders have been incorrect, the tables are almost always dirty, and I watched the kid at the register bring a piece of fish back to the cook without so much as a glove on his hand... The prices are not cheap either, two seafood dinners (a piece of fish with one side) will run you $50 easy. I get the sense the owner of this location doesn't stop by often to check on how their staff is doing. When I visited recently a half an hour before closing time, the staff seemed irritated that they had to take another order and fire up the grill again...mind you I walked in at 6:30 not 6:50 when they close at 7. My flounder sandwich was large and fresh, but tasted like nothing as if no salt or seasoning was used in the fry batter. My wife said the same about her grilled halibut, fresh but lacking in flavor. All in all it works if you are in a pinch and want some fresh fish, but I would not go out of my way to eat here.

The gift shop is cute and quirky and ice cream portions are huge as usual. I think the mini golf courses here are really beautiful and creative in particular but they do get busy. I wish they still allowed multiple flavors with smaller sizes but that's a thing of the past. If they were to add anything, a pool with lanes would be nice.

Mixed bag with highs and lows. -- Hot and Sour Soup (on a lunch combo): Pleasing rendition, with many mushroom types, a just-thick-enough broth, and some mini bits of red pepper in addition to liquid heat. Above average. -- Magnolia Special Chicken Wings: Big plate of wings in a dark sauce combining sweet, heat, and a bit of sour, but not to be mistaken for sweet and sour. Outside, not much crispness. Inside, not much tenderness, and barely moist (forget juicy), but nice marinade flavor deep down. Above average to well above average, but previously elite. -- Pork Egg Foo Yong (on a lunch combo): Two naked patties/omelettes with thick brown gravy on the side. Exterior not crisp, but firm. Interior perfectly tender with a profusion of large chunked onions and tasty pork, and fairly fresh pork at that. Good flavor to the gravy-- served as a big bowl with no monkey dish or spoon. Near-elite. -- Pork Fried Rice (on a lunch combo): Fresh and nice texture but subtle of flavor and not old school style. Decent amount of pork. Rice-a-Roni flavor. Average to slightly above. (Yes, maybe slightly above. Rice-a-Roni has its place.) -- Chicken Fingers (on a lunch combo): Standard issue with the usual low meat-to-batter ratio. Nothing noteworthy on the positive or negative side. Average. Servicewise, I felt ignored the entire meal. Had to grab my own napkins off another table. The ambiance is polished and cozy like a posh UK country gastropub, but tables are a bit crowded. *** THE GOOD *** Our first dinner at Woods Hill was brilliant. Charming and skilled service.. smoothly timed delivery. I inquired on the steak tartar and was told the owner had a plate every night. SOLD... and it did not disappoint. Fine uniform prep I seldom see, quail egg, NOT drowning in cornichons, served chilled.... impeccable. A wild boar ragu pappardelle for entre was decent, but boar was more broken down (pulled?) than I prefer and so there weren't umami pops of flavor from chunks of boar... this is perhaps a preference difference. We had found a great spot. Woods Hill Table was a gem. *** THE BAD *** Fast forward through time and the last four meals have been a disappointment. For example, I brought a 15yr chef friend for steak tartar and frites and a cab franc... the plated dishes looked lovely but were pretty much room temperature, which makes the texture a challenge rather than a treat. Unknown if this is a heat lamp issue or room temp beef used in prep, either way the dishes were warm. Still better than the mayo puck served by a certain Boston Bovine eatery, but I was a bit embarrassed at having talked up the dish and made the arrangements. Decided it was an off night and would try again in the future: A few months later the tartar still looked lovely (a bit coarse) and WAS nicely chilled, but was tough chewing and imbalanced flavors. Still a lovely restaurant, but time to move on from the tartar I guess. *** THE UGLY *** Recently returned for a rare night out (kids do that) and the place is still packed with a charming but busy atmosphere. A charming, if busy atmosphere. Won't knock attentiveness to the table as a busy night is always tough. THE FOOD - very inconsistent I should have taken a salad as they looked elegant and ethereally fresh and light.. as if floating on the plates. On a cold winter night, I had a craving though, and was surprised that the fries were scraps... very salty... and oddly chewy and without crunch or crispness. Junk ENTREE - Icelandic Cod a la Plancha - a mess. - While the sauce was fantastic... light and sweetly complex, I wish the serving as a smaller/deeper dish with more sauce ... it was a highlight but chilled almost immediately in the unwarmed broad pasta bowl. - The blue roasted potatoes were not my thing, and I wish they instead had been little islands of puree that I would scoop with other bites or sauce. - "Jumbo lump crab" is flat out lie... forget visions of "jumbo lump crab" elegantly arrayed on that lovely sauce. You'll get a sweaty little shredded wad, tucked under the fish. - The fish... that poor Cod... was wildly overcooked and mushy. The seared crust was very thick and difficult to cut through and the mushy fish (overcooked or thawed too fast?) would squirt out from underneath. There were a couple of good bites farthest from the seared crust that faintly whispered of how delicate and flaky the filet should have been. TAKEAWAY: Don't order seafood at Woods Hill. Why so worked up about bad fish in boston (hardly rare)? With a cautious eye, the staff almost immediately asked after my first bite if the food was ok. Much like a sommelier sniffing the cork and imperceptibly wincing, but serving the wine and carefully looking to see if customers would notice that it's off. I replied the food was "OK" and continued to pick at the plate. We don't often get out for dinner these days and I didn't want my disappointment to spoil the experience for others. We had no time for the kitchen to remake it anyhow, and I no longer send food back; I cut my losses and find better spots. I hope things turn around. This could be a great spot again someday.

But what brings up my rating and gets me coming back (5 times and counting) is the variety, including more traditional Mexican dishes than the standard Tex-Mex, the very good drinks, the ambience, and great service. On my first visit the first thing I noticed is the "Luna" branding. The name and logo are on everything: the plates, the waiters' aprons, moon stencils on the chair backs, and more. This doesn't detract from the overall look and feel of the place, elegant but not stuffy. One more "luna" allusion: instead of chips with salsa they serve a large round crispy flat bread, presented vertically and obviously meant to suggest a full moon. Many people would probably prefer chips but that's a Tex-Mex thing so this is actually more authentic. And you won't fill up as easily munching on broken-off pieces of the "moon bread" as you would tortilla chips. The taco entree is 3 tacos, several varieties available, served with refried beans. I've had the chorizo and the Al Pastor. Mix and match not allowed unfortunately. They are both ok, and the tortillas are I believe made in house. The chorizo spicing was unimpressive. My chief "complaint" if that's the right word, is they are too simple: just the protein, some chopped onions, and cilantro. In my memory of great tacos I've had in the past there are a multitude of flavors and ingredients: onions prepared 2 or even 3 ways, sautéed and raw peppers, fresh avocado slices, etc. None of that here. Specialty sauces aren't offered by default but are provided on request. Two were brought to my table, one red and one green, both very hot. In small bowls so I don't know if they are home-made or commercial. I like a lot of sauce and always run out so next time I'll ask for a "double portion" and we'll see how that goes. The wife has had the beef fajitas. In my opinion the meat was overly marinated, with the wrong consistency and a flavor I don't expect in a fajita. And the vegetables were cooked with the meat so their flavor was muted. I'd pass on that. The Pollo Mole Poblano (chicken mole) was decent but there wasn't enough sauce. As was the enchiladas 3 ways (one each with chicken, beef, and cheese). Most entrees are served with a side of rice and refried beans, the latter served in a small fried tortilla cup. Portion sizes are reasonable. On the traditional Mexican side I've tried two meat-heavy entrees: Borrego Matitito's (marinated lamb shank with chili pepper sauce), and Chamorro's (a similar dish but made from pork shank, and different seasonings). I liked both but preferred the lamb, and the portion was larger too: enough for two meals. In the appetizer section I've had Pulpo Rasurado (octopus in salsa negra with red onions, cucumber, avocado, and radishes). A beautiful presentation and perfectly prepared (octopus can be tough and this was not). Also the Oysters Rockerfeller (not Mexican, I know). This could have been great but unfortunately was under-grilled so the cheese wasn't browned and bubbling. The table-side finishing treatment by the waiter with his hand torch wasn't enough either. Maybe he got impatient or maybe the butane was running out. I'd try it again though; it might have been an anomaly. Both these appetizer portions were huge, almost enough for a meal in itself. All the cocktails I've tried (several mescal concoctions and margaritas) have been tasty and seemed to have adequate alcohol content. Their gimmick here is all cocktails arrive bubbling and steaming like a witch's brew. I think it's from dry ice? That doesn't change the taste but may help to keep them cold and it's fun to watch. I've seen this before but usually it's reserved for one or two of the high-end specialties, not every cocktail. Nevertheless, the prices are in the normal range for cocktails these days, not excessive by that standard. Service has always been friendly and flawless. Desserts: We've tried two: The Pan de Elote is a cornbread cake served with ice cream and sauce, flambéed by the waiter at the table. And the churros: fried dough sticks covered with cinnamon, stuffed like cannoli, served with two sauces for dipping (chocolate and caramel), and served in a whimsical wheeled contraption resembling a food cart in miniature. The Pan de Elote is my favorite of the two but the churros were good too and the portion size was enormous! So until I can get back to Florida for some truly great Mexican I'm grateful to have Luna as an option.
