Yum, yum, and yum. One for each of the three go to dishes at this small restaurant. To make it easy the three dishes I've tried are the first three on the menu, and also what I think is most popular here - [1] Hai Nam Style Chicken w/Rice ($7.50), [2] Fried Cornish Hen (1/2) w/Tomato Paste Fried Rice ($8.50), and [3] Cubed Steak w/Tomato Paste Fried Rice ($8.75). In terms of what I like and the order I like them best, they would be reverse of how I just listed them. The cubed steak was the best. The beef has stacked with a great peppery flavor and the texture/tenderness was awesome. The tomato paste fried rice was decent and came in a big portion, but could've used more flavor in it. Still better than regular rice though, obviously. The fried cornish hen had a nice crispiness to to the skin. I was afraid the meat would be dry, but it was not. It wasn't mega juicy like your local Costco rotisserie, but it was good enough. Tomato rice same as previously mentioned. The hai nam chicken was a bit lacking in terms of flavor. Texture was pretty good and wasn't dry at all. But the ginger flavor in the sauce was a little drowned by the oil. So if this is what you came for, Savoy is still a better option. Parking is plentiful, but the place needs a renovation...as it does look a little jank from the outside. But as long as the food stays on point, I think it will live on as long as it wants to, especially with such good prices. I was told this place is very good for Hainan chicken so I came here for dinner on Sunday night. This restaurant is located in the same plaza as 168 Market so there's plenty of parking. Called to place an order for boneless Hainan chicken and was told the order would take approximately 10 mins. The order came with a vegetable soup and also requested for extra sauce. After I got the food I ate in the car while it was still warm and the chicken was very tender and moist and the sauce was a bit spicy was perfectly paired with the chicken. The soup was hot so it warms you up and wasn't too salty .. just a plain simple vegetable soup it. We ordered two hainan a chickens through the phone and went to pick it up. When we were there to pick up the food, the place was pretty filled only with some empty tables. The workers were really friendly and packed our food for us pretty quickly. We got back to work and opened up our food and it looked amazing!! The presentation was nice and the chicken was really moist and juicy and their sauce was on point! They gave us a little bit of cucumbers and a side of soup! Food was really good but the portion wasn't as good. The didn't give as much chicken compared to rice and there was more bone than meat. This is probably my parent's favorite restaurant in the sea of many in the Alhambra/San Gabriel/Monterey Park area because it is simple, fast, cheap and filling. Like I was saying before the Hainan chicken is pretty good and comes with slices of tomatoes and cucumbers served on really savory rice that rivals any other place in town. Though the chicken is great for some reason I still like Savoy's better. Maybe its because the sauce here is great with its sweet and tangy it still can't compete with the mystery sauce that Savoy has. However, there are other dishes here that make this a great place including the cubed beef steak with red rice, pan fried game hen over red rice and the different types of chow mien. Additionally, all their dishes come served with a simple soup of the day. It's usually some sort of chicken broth with savory Chinese herbs or some sort of veggie. You sit down, lady goes to the counter and grabs her notepad and asks you what you'd like to order. I kid you not. Went to pick up hainam chicken for dinner and all I got was 8 small pieces of chicken which was all white meat and all bones. I remember the chicken used to taste better and the portions were much better but I guess for take out they reduce the portions served. Apparently they save the dark meat and try to push out all the bones and white meat. If you were to combine the portions of the chicken I got, it doesn't even add up to one drumstick, which is pretty disappointing. After 3-4 bites, I was left with all rice with sauce. Basically I paid $10 for rice only. This used to be my favorite place for hainam chicken over savoy but now I see why people go to Savoy more. Although the sauce here is bar none the best, the quality of the chicken taste better at savoy, plus they give bigger portions and more than the amount of meat I got here. They at least give you some white meat and dark meat instead of all white meat. My recent visit has been disappointing. We ordered the hainam chicken rice. Not much meat in the chicken, one of the plate was very raw chicken, could see blood. I refused to eat and asked to switch, owner insisted it's cooked and refused for a refund or exchange, or anything. Being a nurse, I'm not about to eat salmonella. End up didn't eat it. Then I started reading Dong Nguyen as having the best hainan chicken rice. I went to the plaza and I thought it's the same restaurant that my friend took me. I never walked in. I kept reading more reviews on this place and finally I gave in. The place was actually 2 doors away from the place I didn't like. Ordered hainan chicken rice and bo luc lac. Hainan chicken rice ($6.90): The rice was surprisingly pretty good but the chicken and sauces were not comparable to Savoy. I still prefer Savoy over this place. I usually get my chicken minus the skin @ Savoy. Get its hainan chicken rice with fried chicken instead. Bo luc lac ($7.75): the tomato rice was pretty good but its bo luc lac was just okay. I went back for its com ga ro ti and vermicelli with chicken & salted fish. My favorite dish @ this place was its com ga ro ti. Seasoned perfectly, It was crispy on the outside and juicy inside. This is a Chinese-Vietnamese restaurant located in the same shopping center as 168 Market on the corner of Valley & New Ave. It's tucked way in the back with a tiny sign so you may miss it. I completely passed by it the first time I tried looking for this place. I was in the right shopping center and I still thought I was in the wrong place. There's plenty of parking so finding a spot shouldn't be too difficult. The most popular items here seem to be the first three items on the menu - Hainan Chicken (called Hai Nam Style Chicken with Rice on the menu), Fried Cornish Hen with Tomato Paste Fried Rice, and Cubed Steak with Tomato Paste Fried Rice. Pretty much every table had some combination of these items. I didn't try the cornish hen because I can't stand anything with bones, but did try the other two items. The Hainan Chicken here is pretty good but is not the best I had. I do like it more than Savoy but it's not as good as Green Zone, which is my favorite. I ordered mine boneless and skinless. but not sure if this option is always available. When I initially requested this, the server said she had to go check first. The chicken seemed a bit dry because they use breast meat instead of leg meat, which is what I'm used to. Unlike other places, they only give you one sauce to dip the chicken. It's some combination of ginger, chili sauce, and sweet & sour sauce, combined into one. I did like the taste of the sauce but I'm sure some people may not care for the sweetness of it. Even for me it was a bit too sweet. I still prefer the simple ginger sauce with oil, salt, and some green onions, like the one at Green Zone. The rice was soft, fluffy, and had pretty good flavor. The ratio of rice to chicken was like 3 to 1 so it seemed like they skimped on the chicken. Not sure if this is because I got mine boneless. Regardless, I still like the overall dish, and I would definitely come back here for the Hainan Chicken if I can't deal with the wait at Green Zone. Cubed Steak with Tomato Paste Fried Rice was really tasty. This is basically the same thing as Beef Loc Lac at Newport Tan Cang but with tomato rice. I've had similar dishes at other Vietnamese restaurants and they've always been pretty good. The steak wasn't as tender as the one at Newport Tan Cang but I thought the flavor was better balanced here. In other words, it wasn't overly sauced. It comes with salt and a piece of lemon on the side if you want to make a dipping sauce for your steak. It had enough flavor on its own so I didn't have to use this. This is the dish that will make me come back here. I also tried the Filet of Fish Soup and Shrimp Chow Mein but neither of these were that memorable. They were fine but the flavors were rather bland compared to the other dishes. I spiced up the fish soup with some Sriracha sauce and it tasted pretty good. The fish was very tender and didn't have any fishy smell so it actually was a good dish overall once the soup was spiced up. The chow mein was probably my least favorite. The ingredients were ok but the sauce just tasted like salt without any distinct flavor. Price is pretty good but this place is CASH ONLY. Enough food for me to eat two meals and it's only $7.50. The chicken is tender and flavorful and the ginger sauce is lightly gingery and sweet. I dip my chicken in it, mix it with my rice...mmm This time my BFF was in town so my husband decided we could finally order more food (he usually only gets wonton noodle soup here which is really good). This time we also had com bo luc lac (shaking beef cubes). It was ok. I miss this dish back home in Dallas. I didn't care for the tomato rice either so I mixed it with my chicken rice and ginger sauce! We also had the mapo doufu. It was also fine. Not too oily, tofu was that nice silky consistency. But unfortunately the one dish that ruined it all was the 四季豆. Rather than long beans, they used regular green beans which aren't able to get that char that gives it all the flavor. Plus the sauce they used was atypical and did not taste good at all. It almost tasted bad. The service here is cordial and efficient. Waters are refilled, ginger sauce refilled, food comes out quickly and customers and to go orders are quite steady, it's a busy place. I'll definitely be back for hainan chicken and wonton soup. read more
