Do you know what it feels like to realize you were deceived by Yelp reviews? Well now I do. After reading so many amazing yelp reviews, I decided that I just had to go to Dong Nguyen and try their beef cube with tomato rice and hainan chicken rice. I regretted ever giving this place a try. First of all, I'm not proud to say that I have had many different hainan chicken rice at many places because it's kind of a fatty dish. Nevertheless I have and Dong Nguyen ranks among the worst. The chicken is very fatty with little meat and lots of skin. The sauce was what killed the dish. It's too sweet and has too much corn starch mixed in. In addition to being able to taste the corn starch, the sauce ended up having a weird sticky texture that was very unappetizing. Just go to Savoy instead. Not to worry, the beef cube and tomato rice can help Dong Nguyen score a comeback? Nope! Seriously the dish couldn't be more underwhelming. People who sing praises have never had the beef with tomato rice at Kim Ky and the loc lac beef at Newport Seafood. The beef didn't have a nice aroma of Maggie and peppers like it should. The tomato rice lacked flavor and the rice was too wet so there were many clumps of rice. That freaking Savoy drives me nuts. Especially when we drive all the way out there to see that place closed. It was Memorial Day. A freakin' Monday. Mama wanted Hainan chicken. We thought Savoy would be open but Nooooooooooo, it's dead in there. No one. We drove forty minutes for nothing!? We had to get something. Hubby desperately yelped. We found this place. We did not expect much and went. It was a very pleasant surprise. I loved it. Hubby not much. I thought this is as good of Hainan chicken compared to Savoy. Hubby missed the sauce at Savoy. I did not miss extra 2 dollars I have to pay for the broth as this place just gives you the soup. I loved the sauce here as well. I almost think that I prefer this place over Savoy if it was for Hainan Chicken alone. Ugh only if they had Escargot too.... Anyway, if you are like me who keep on missing the days that Savoy is open and your month is watering just thinking about Hainan, this is not a bad alternative. Dong Nguyen Restaurant is one of those little gems tucked away in a big shopping center. I've been coming here for years and the food is excellent every time. It's definitely very authentic - I see whole families here all the time, from grannies and grandpas down to the little ones. Everyone with Asian grandparents know they are the most picky ones, so you know the food is authentic and delicious! Dong Nguyen is famous for their Hainam Chicken, and they are hands-down some the best I've ever had. The chicken is steamed to tender perfection, juicy and succulent. The rice, cooked with the chicken broth, is very flavorful as well. The best part is their special sweet ginger sauce, it sounds strange at first to have a sweet and gingery sauce to go with the chicken, but it all somehow just blends together in harmony. Don't be afraid to ask for more sauce, the ladies are more than happy to give extra! As for the debate on whose chicken is better - Dong Nguyen or Savoy? I've been to Savoy many times as well, and I agree with the Yelpers who say that Savoy's Hainam Chicken is definitely more Chinese whereas Dong Nguyen's is more Vietnamese. Is one better than the other? I don't think so. Two styles, equally good. But I hate waiting in line, especially when I'm starving, so I'd rather not wait 45 minutes at Savoy in line with hipster Asian kids. I want to get seated and have my food right away - and Dong Nguyen has super-fast service. Another Dong Nguyen favorite of mine is the Cubed Filet Mignon with red rice. The cubed beef is perfectly spiced, with onions caramelized just so that it's slightly sweet and salty. The red rice is garlicky, and cooked just right, not sticky and wet like a lot of restaurants do with rice cooked with tomato sauce. If you're not into beef, there is also a grilled Cornish hen version of this rice dish that's excellent as well. Other than the two most popular dishes, I also highly recommend their pan-fried noodles with seafood - the noodles are cooked crispy and delicious. You can choose to have it with or without gravy. For those of you who are adventurous, try the the taro root and duck casserole, or the salted fish and chicken fried rice. I love their version of this classic Chinese fried rice dish, they add shredded lettuce and it just totally makes the whole texture thing for me. Aromatically delicious! The soup changes every day, most of the time there are herb things in it like barley, mountain yam, dried dates, and sometimes chicken feet. You really can't compare hainan chicken. It's too different . All i can say is that DN's version is like the best "home-cooked" hainan chicken vs Savoy's is the best restaurant version. It's a great dish. I highly recommend it. The flavors are very authentic and the rice has the "extra" taste of this dish that I had countless times in this certain restaurant in Hong Kong. For some reason though, it lacks this element that Savoy's version has. Savoy's will have you craving their Hainan chicken over and over. Even if you just had it an hour ago. This is a great place for Hainan Chicken. I know Savoy is just around the corner, but Savoy is nothing compared to Dong Nguyen. The rice is better, the chicken is better, it comes with a great chicken soup, and its never crowded. The chicken soup that comes before the real meal is just like your (asian) mom's chicken soup but with slightly more ginger. I always want to ask for extra, but by the time I'm done with my soup, the Hainan chicken has already arrived! The Hainan chicken comes with rice that is made from the chicken stock of the chicken on your plate. It is so flavorful that I could just eat the rice alone. The sauce, I've heard, is not as good as Savoy, but I honestly can't tell the difference. The location is in an older area that is a bit more quiet. You can easily miss this restaurant since it's hidden in the plaza. But once you find it, there is always room in the restaurant, and you'll never have to wait like those fools standing around for hours at Savoy. There are other dishes here that I do want to try, but everytime I go, I just have to get the Hainan Chicken. I've been coming here for years, usually once/twice a month on the weekend, just came back from there last night June 14, 2009 and they ran out of Hainan Chicken. It's THAT good. This is the Chinese-Vietnamese version of the Hainan chicken. The Hainan Chicken is half dark and half white meat with bomb sauce. They specialize in chicken and the secret is in their 'sauce' that comes in juice sized pitchers for patrons that always fiend to pour a lil more! An elderly lady told her daughter she wants hand torn chicken, and her daughter couldn't find it on the menu, the staff who was cleaning other table overheard the conversation and walked over to show them where the item is listed on the menu. Savoy has three separate sauces: dark soy sauce, chili sauce, ginger sauce. I prefer the simplicity of Dong Nguyen's single sauce and I don't miss the lack of dark soy sauce because the rice and chicken don't need the extra flavor. Even though Dong Nguyen came out ahead for 2/3 areas...I still can't totally give up Savoy's hainan chicken rice. It's definitely a great alternative for those who love chicken rice but hate waiting for a table. As some others have noted, there are probably only a few dishes worth ordering here, most notably the Hainan Chicken, Cornish Hen on Red Rice, and Shaken Beef. But of course, most readers want to know about the Hainan chicken which has stiff competition down the street from Savoy. Here's my comparison: Chicken: Equal if you don't mind picking bones. Savoy advantage if you're white/not used to eating like a ghetto asian. Both are tender and flavorful. Savoy has added option of requesting all white/dark meat. Rice: Toss up. Dong Nguyen has more flavorful individual rice grains, but savoy is more sticky broken rice. Just a matter of preference. I prefer dong nguyen's. Sauce: This is where I think Dong Nguyen just spanks Savoy. Their sweet garlic chili sauce is out of this world. I wish I had an unlimited supply of that at home. I could just eat it with rice and be a happy camper. Also, they'll come and refill it for you without even asking as they make rounds with it every once in awhile for the restaurant. Savoy gives some garlic sauce and soy sauce. Soy sauce? I don't even think that should count as a sauce cause every restaurant has soy sauce. The chicken is perfectly cooked and the sauce that it is accompanied with is awesome! I can just taste it is my mouth right now as I am writing this review. Chicken does not come out looking pink or bloody. Rice is cooked perfectly. They refill on the sauce so feel free to dip as much as you want. The ladies that work there are nice. This place is the bomb for the following rice dishes: Hainam Chicken and Bo Luc Lac. Oh my god they give you such a generous serving of rice when you order, especially if you get an order to go. Seriously, the amount of rice that they give you is supersized and will probably be enough to feed 2 adults. Okay maybe I'm exaggerating, but for $6-7 each dish; you get about 1.5-2 times the amount of rice that you would expect. The tomato fried rice that you get with the Bo Luc Lac and Roti Chicken is really tasty and reminds me of the exceptional quality that I am used to getting in Sydney. This place is a little small, with about 10 tables so there may be some waiting time during busy periods. I ordered the only two things that people seemed to talk about. Hainan chicken. My bf doesn't like this dish in general but I do and I haven't had it for a while. I thought he'd at least help me eat it. At first, it was good. I especially like the ginger sauce but I practically ate the whole thing myself and that much skin gets sickening. Maybe I should have picked it off. The Bo Luc Lac/Beef Cubes would've tasted good if I've never had better. Because this is one of the dishes this place is known for, I was disappointed. My mom makes better tomato rice. The flavor of the beef wasn't as good as bo luc lac in Westminster..Luc Dinh Ky to be specific. On Yelp someone wrote this was a savoy killer!! They lied and killed my heart. I went in thinking it was going to be great and just got some mediocre hainam chicken. But I will tell you the beef cubed with tomato rice was not bad! It's a cheap mom and pop shop that would be good for a quick lunch bite. This place is known for its Hai Nam Chicken served with rice, the rice is cook in chicken broth. Pretty different, pretty good, & pretty big portion. Husband had the beef with rice, he very much enjoyed it, it was well prepared. My son Max finished his bowl of rice and pork chop. I was so impressed so I knew their food is good. The restaurant is quite small but very busy, lots of takeouts. Great parkings! read more

Funny how most Asian restaurant doesn't respect customer request. I preferred my soup brought out same time with my order when it's hot & ready. I go shopping at 168 all the time, but it wasn't until recently did I start noticing this little restaurant between 168 and CVS Pharmacy. After reading up some of the review on here about their hainan chicken, my dad and I came here to try it out! Hainan chicken is obviously their main dish here since it is #1 item on the menu so we both ordered it. For those who have gotten use to chickens without bones at Savory, there are definitely bones here. Good thing is there are still more meats than bones. The portion of chicken is very generous with both dark and white meats. The sauce is very delicious and rice is more flavorful than the ones at Savoy. I dipped all my rice and chicken with the sauce which explain the sauces are gone so fast. Good thing the waitress walked by and offered to refill more for me. Each of the item on the menu also comes with a daily special soup. For those of you who are looking for an alternative to the hainan chicken at Savoy, Dong Nguyen definitely does its job as long as you don't mind the bones. read more

Hands down THE best Hainan Chicken, ever. I've had Savoy a few times and it was good, but this place is GREAT. Every meal starts off with a ginger chicken feet veggie soup to cleanse your pallet (I pick out the chicken foot- yuck). I hate chicken feet and ginger, but for some reason this soup is so bomb! They even gave us seconds the last time I went cause this fatty asked for more. Each time I go, I always order the beef red rice and the Hainan Chicken. The beef and chicken are always so moist and the rice is so flavorful. Each bite is like a party in mouth. Fact - after you finish your meal, you will def get food coma. I love their Hainan chicken. Their other stuff not so much. The thing about this Hainan chicken is, you have to work for the meat. The bones are not removed for you. But if the food is tasty, I don't mind working for it. Just be careful that in your zeal to shove as much chicken and rice in your mouth, that you do not bite down on a bone. Their sauce is soo much better than the stuff at Savoy. I've only been here twice and so have had two other dishes that my bf ordered. The duck curry? was pretty awful. I forgot what other dish I had. Next time, we're just getting 2 Hainan chickens. read more

Poor bo luc lac. Very disappointed. The meat was way too over cooked and I'm not even sure if it was filet mignon. Usually the meat is a little pink in the middle but it was cooked well done all the way. Tough, terrible meat. The com, or rice, was flavorless and a very terrible texture. There are way better places to get bo luc lac, don't come here. I've never been more dissatisfied with such a great dish. Also, the steak has way too much sauce on it, and it's extremely salty. read more
