I think this place only deserves a 3 star, may be 3.5 star, but my boyfriend is such a fan of their signature Hainan Chicken Rice. I often come and try different dishes from the menu: roti chicken rice, shaken beef with red rice, chicken/fish fillet noodle, pho, and herb braised duck egg noodle. The rice is not always perfectly cooked. The meat that comes with the rice is almost always oily. It has great seasoning, but I have never finished any of the rice dish. As for their noodles, the broth is bland. Not only is the broth between a pho and another kind of noodle very much similar, but also my herb braised duck noodle broth taste just like that with dark color. One of the best Hainan chicken places in the area, if not the best place. I don't know why Savoy gets so much traffic and this little hole in the wall is left to stagnate. Well, I kind of know why. Savoy is decorated to a more modern crowd and this place looks like it belongs is some corner in Chinatown. But then again, it's usually those corner places in Chinatown that serves awesome food. So it goes with Dong Nguyen. The Hainan Chicken rice is pretty good and the ladies that serve you are genuinely nice. The Hainan Chicken Rice is not the best I've ever had (But come on, who the hell in the world can compare to Tian Tian Hainan Chicken in Singapore? I'll tell you. NO ONE). The best Hainanese chicken I've ever had was in Singapore and Malaysia. That's my standard, and everything I've had here in the US has sort of paled in comparison. I came here this past week around 7 p.m. for dinner. There was no wait for my table of two, but there were quite a few tables of folks chowing down on dinner. My friend and I ordered the bo luc lac with red rice and the Hainanese chicken rice. Both dishes came out super quick - I was surprised! We also got complimentary soup, which was nice and a rarity even for dinners in SGV lately. The bo luc lac was good. I'm not an expert in Vietnamese cuisine, but the beef was well flavored, featured a good sear, and not too dry. The accompanying red rice was yummy, too. The Hainan chicken was similar to Savoy's, but the rice tasted a bit different, although still clearly had been flavored with oil and herbs. Unfortunately, I found some of pieces of chicken a little dry, and I thought the skin was actually a bit thick and fatty. We also ordered some green beans, which came stir fried with pork. This was standard, and the pieces of pork were actually bigger than I expected. Service: Hands down some of the best service I've had in SGV. My friend and I sat for a while, so our food got a bit cold. They offered to microwave it for us to make it warmer. They also came repeatedly to fill our water bottles, but it never felt intrusive. Bottom line: This is a good place with respect to budget - both the dinner plates were a little over $6, and the green beans were $4.50 or so. Service is extraordinary! LOVE THIS PLACE. I had no idea this little hole in the wall at New Ave and Valley would be so scrumptious. When I went with a friend at 6pm, there was no one- so I was a little hesitant. Right when I walked in, they greeted us quickly with vegetable soup, which I was psyched about since I was freaken hungry. I ordered their Hainan Chicken, which they brought to us in like 5-10 minutes. There's a special sweet and sour sauce that only they have. First bite, I was like WOOHHHHH. Hainan Chicken competition up in here, just a few blocks away from Savoy Kitchen......as you can tell, Savoy and Dong Nguyen are both known for their Hainan Chicken dishes and rightfully so, you can ask many people in the 626 and majority of them will probably name one or the other. What sets them off is how they prepare the dishes for you, they are a tad different, so you may favor one or the other. But before we get to the chicken breakdowns, I just want to say that the service here is exceptional, the ladies who work here are awesome, nice, friendly, quick and always ready to refill your sauces or waters if need be. One last mention before I get into the chicken again, they do serve other dishes, and previous times I have been here, I have ordered the filet mignon beef cube with red rice, it is delicious here and if you aren't a chicken person and prefer beef, you gotta try it here. Now for their Chicken dish, here at Dong Nguyen, they serve the chicken over a bed of white rice, sliced cucumbers and tomatoes on the side, and their sauce. The chicken is boiled till it is tender and it falls off the bone very nicely just as it does at Savoys, although at Savoys they do a better job imo at getting rid of most bones and making sure there aren't small bones in the chicken, so I think overall taste, both Savoy and Dong Nguyen do a good job, but Savoy does a better job at cleaning it. The white rice is also very comparable as in you can taste the chicken oils in it, it isn't to the point that you can tell the rice is oily, but you can definitely have that delicious taste of. And last but not least the factor I consider the most important, is the sauce. I absolutely love the sauce at Savoys and believe it is their true money maker that makes people come back for more and more. The sauce here at Dong Nguyen is totally different. Some people like the sauce here, some don't, at Savoy we are treated with a soy sauce, ginger and oil, and an orange chili tang sauce. At Dong Nguyen we are presented with one single sweet vinigary sauce made up with minced garlic and chilli. I thought it was great, but wished that they had more variety like a spicier sauce. Wow! Really good, tennnnnnnnder chicken. My sister and I ordered different items so I could try two dishes rather one. She's been here a million times, so it was no biggie for her. So we got Hainan chicken for $6 and Cubed beef with red rice for $6.50. The Food & The Cost: The Hainan chicken is very tender, juicy, and flavorful. It feels like it melts in your mouth. I could eat it without the sauce. It is just so good. I haven't tried Savoy, so I can't compared, but it is the best Hainan chicken I've tried so far. Keri T. is right. This is the Vietnamese version of the Hainan chicken. That doesn't diminish it's yumminess at all! In fact, I like how I'm getting a different species. The sauce is this slightly thickened garlicky, lemony, and red-pepper-flaky stuff. They're generous with and will come by to refill your little sauce plate. The hai nan chicken rice (#1) is pretty good. I think their chicken and rice are more flavorful than Savoy's and I also like the sweet and sour ginger sauce they serve it with. I usually get the white meat (skinless and boneless) at Savoy and you can't choose here so the chicken comes with the skin and bones. I think this has a more authentic taste compared to Savoy's. If I could bring over Savoy's sauces then this would be the perfect combo haha but I think them both a lot. If you like Savoy, I would definitely try here to compare for yourself. The bo luc lac (#3) is also good but not as tasty as I expected (maybe I was expecting more pepper) but the tomato rice was good and a nice change. Came here because Savoy Kitchen was closed that day :( and to whoever said this place has better Hainan Chicken is WRONG! But to be fair, let me start off by pointing out that everyone makes Hainan Chicken a little differently. And maybe this is just the Vietnamese version that I'm not used to, so it's a little unfair making this comparison. But being that this is down the street from Savoy, it's hard not to compare. The biggest difference is the sauce that they serve the Hainan Chicken with. It comes in this orange sweet and tangy sauce that's very different from the Chinese version that comes with dark soy sauce and ginger/chili sauce. And I much prefer the Chinese version. In my opinion, the ginger sauce & soy sauce compliments the chicken perfectly and doesn't overpower it, unlike the much sweeter and tangy Vietnamese sauce. Hainan Chicken is such a simple dish, and the whole point is to let the taste of the chicken itself shine in this dish, and not douse it with an overpowering sauce. Not to say that it wasn't good though, it still was, but just not better than Savoy. Also this place could use a little cleaning up :( the tables were so dirty and sticky, what's worse is that it had that rancid dirty rag smell that probably came from wiping tables with.. well, dirty rags. But I really like that they offer you soup for free as soon as you sit down (warning: it comes with chicken feet, if that's not your thing), it probably doesn't even cost much for them to do this but little things like that weighs heavy on my rating of the restaurant overall. People that dine in must have a better experience, but all four orders we're terrible. If I could give this place a zero I would. I'm sure people would love to compare the Hainan Chicken to this place and Savoy. Thing about Savoy is that it's hyped up and not a lot of spaces where you'll end up waiting for about 30 mins to an hour to be seated. You might as well drive down Valley and head to Dong Nguyen. Parking should be easier and you don't end up waiting so long to be seated for some good Hainan Chicken. However, it's not just their Hainan Chicken that's good but also their Filet Mignon Cubes with Tomato Paste Red Rice. These two dishes are the main dishes I get whenever I come here. Price here are also reasonable for both dishes. I've only had one problem coming here and that was when I ordered their Hainan Chicken dish. They said it would be about 10 mins but ended up being about 15-20 min wait for it. Though the wait was a bit longer, it was well worth it. Their Hainan Chicken is so tender and flavorful Mix that with their sweet sauce to dip in and a perfect combination is made. Good food mixed with a short wait and reasonable priced food is what I like about this place compared to Savoy. Haphazardly tucked into the 168 supermarket plaza between the market and CVS, this place is decent for an alternative to Savoy for those days that you just don't wait in line and be part of the lunacy. The hainan chicken is almost just as good and comes with a free bowl of soup. The roast duck soup and shaken beef is also decent as well. More than anything else I think I come here because it reminds me of my younger years in LA. These restaurants were basically my after school daycare while waiting for my dad finish whatever he was doing in those smokey back rooms. Probably supplementing my college fund I'm sure. Definitely a try once type of restaurant. Most will either hate it or love it. Sadly in the end though Savoy is just a cut above. I think shall go wait in line now. read more

This used to be one of my family's favorite restaurants. It has been over 11 years since my family last came here. I decided to eat here with my family because we were heading to noodle guy and I suddenly remembered this place and my family decided yes ! Nothing has changed and I love it. It's like walking into your childhood. The tables and chairs are the same and the layout and old vintage paintings on the wall. I was surprised there wasn't a line of people waiting for a table (small place) . But maybe because we went on a Monday night haha. The waitresses are so friendly ! Thos review is based solely on the Hainan Style Chicken Rice. Inspired by the Fong Brothers, tonight I got Hainan Chicken Rice from both Savoy Kitchen and Dong Nguyen for a face-off comparison. See my review for Savoy Kitchen to find out what I thought of theirs. Dong Nguyen does not pretend to make an authentic, Singaporean preparation, but rather a Vietnamese regional variation. You will not find 3 dipping sauces, nor should you expect to--only one sauce is served, a sweet chili and ginger sauce slightly thickened by starch. You will receive some chicken broth soup on the side, along with some slices of tomato and cucumber. What I liked: chicken rice was nice and chickeny! Rice itself was longer grain, but it still tasted quite good. Dipping sauce was tasty, though I'd have preferred it not be thickened. What I didn't like: chicken was served warm; Hainan Chicken Rice is traditionally supposed to have cold chicken that has been through an ice bath. Overall, I quite enjoyed this regional variation on the dish, and would return to try more of Dong Nguyen's menu. I still miss Grainivore in Koreatown (now closed), though, for their more authentically-Singaporean preparation. read more

Half dark, half white meat with bomb sauce. The only downside is that the restaurant isn't as clean as I'd like it to be. And the rice is a little dry compared to Savoy's. So Dong Nguyen's sauce and Savoy's rice would make the perfect Hai Nam chicken! I love both Dong Nguyen and Savoy. After hearing great things about this hainan chicken spot as an alternative to Savoy, I finally decided to give Dong Nguyen a shot. A few notes below: - The hainan chicken is not as good as Savoy's. Dong Nguyen serves less chicken per order, and the meat is not de-boned as well. The rice and chicken are both not as flavorful. There is something refreshing about the lighter taste, but I would prefer Savoy's chicken almost any day of the week. - The beef cube and red rice were fantastic! The meat portion is better than the portion for the chicken. - The seafood noodles were good, but not as good as the noodles from other cafes such as Tasty Garden. - Everything comes with soup! The price keeps going up and the quality of food and service keeps going the opposite direction.This time will be my last. Ordered take out- $18 for 2 orders of rice and chicken. I ordered the red rice with cornish hen- there was ONE piece of egg in the fried rice?? That's pathetic. Then we asked for the pickled green chilies. Its in a tiny container, so we asked for 4. She rolled her eyes and said " NO, we don't have enough for tomorrow". We said "if we ate in, it would be unlimited. We ordered 2 orders for $18, 4 tiny containers is not much to ask for. It was Hainan chicken rice for which we came, and Hainan chicken rice which filled our bellies when we left! Our mistake was ordering things other than Hainan chicken in addition to it. Damn our appetite for adventure! My duck with fermented tofu mystery sauce was a slap in my Western palate, but it grew on me. Of course, it didn't hurt that the duck was very tender. However, it was one note, and I quickly tired of it. The beef stew was similarly forgettable. Lots of fivespice powder from what I could tell. Never mind all that though, what about the chicken? Is it worthy of its much discussed rivalry with Savoy? Here's my take: In an ideal world, one could get their chicken pieces and rice plate from Dong Nguyen, then make the sauces from Savoy appear next to it. That would make the perfect magical chicken rice. Alas, I cannot perform such wizardry, and I choose... Dong Nguyen. By a hair. For a variety of reasons. One: there isn't a crazy wait. Two: there is ample parking. But most importantly, the chicken just tastes fresher and is more tender, and the rice is infused with good broth, and the one sauce they serve is tasty and gingery, even if it doesn't reach the level of the holy triad Savoy serves. Plus, I can always add my own hot pepper sauce from the table. Somewhat tangentially, I was finally able to break free from the cult of the chanh muoi (salty lime) and try out the xi muoi (salty plum) soda! This is because they didn't have chanh muoi, but whatever, it finally happened! Thus far, I had not been able to resist the draw of the lime. Embarrassingly, I even tried to order it at Dong Nguyen despite it not being listed on the menu, but language barriers stopped that from happening. She was cautious about serving me the salty plum too, but with much confident head nodding I was able to communicate that it was OK. The verdict? Also deliciously addictive. (For another opinion, consider Dan's: "It tastes like someone made soda out of gym socks.") But it doesn't touch the lime version. I guess I'll remain loyal. read more

I think this place was too hyped up for me. I've always heard about the fight for whose Hainan Chicken is better between here and Savoy....and Savoy wins in my book. I prefer Savoy simply because of the sauces and the chicken's boneless, but it wasn't bad here either...definitely more of the original recipe. I also tried the Bo Luc Lac which was pretty good, but I've had better before too. This is a good place to come to if you're craving your average Asian dish and especially if you want to avoid the longass wait at Savoy. Came here for the first time for lunch today. I ordered the crispy (fried) cornish hen on top of tomato sauce rice. The chicken/hen was fried very nicely and had an excellent crispiness and good salty/greasy flavor. It came out uncut - it was literally an entire small cornish hen on top of a plate of rice! It was not that great /: First- the cubed beef- flavor was okay but the quality of the meat is just so bad. I didn't enjoy it. Portion size (meat to rice ratio) is decent. Red rice is good. Second- hainam chicken was actually pretty good, both flavor and texture wise. I don't know if my bf ate it all before I got some or what, but there was HARDLY enough chicken. They are totally stingy with the chicken and there is a lot of bone. If they gave more chicken, I would possibly come here for this dish over Savoy. The ginger sauce is pretty good but kind of a weird thick consistency. Went here on the way up from socal to norcal, dropped by SGV for some chinese/asian food and stumble upon this place on yelp. I was pleasantly surprised by how great the food tasted in a small restaurant. Other reviews recommended Hainan chicken with rice (#1), so I ordered that. The rice was infused with that delicious chicken juice and the chicken were tasty. I also ordered a lamb stew rice dish (#14?), it tasted just like how I expected it to be, with plenty of lamb pieces. While I was in the restaurant, a lot of people came in to order Hainan chicken rice places to go. So I guess their Hainan chicken is pretty famous around the area. Being a college student, price is important to me. 16.50 for 2, portions were decent. Not bad.
