First time eating here today. Ordered the food to go. I chose the chicken fried steak breakfast and added a pancake. I was a little taken back by the total of my bill ($20.24) . When the food came and I needed 2 bags to carry out my breakfast which turned into lunch and dinner too with the amount food I was given. Very small and quaint place. Nice little hole in the wall diner like I like it. Asked if we could have our dog on the patio and even though it was hot it was better than the car. This was on the way home from Kern, and I was also able to nurse my baby on the patio. Got a small biscuits and gravy to try and out big kids got the pancake sandwich. A little upset I have spent 31 years on earth without Donna Kaye's in my life. Hands down best breakfast in town. Huge variety of breakfast choices. And although I have only eaten here once I have to say everything sounds amazing. Definitely a home cooked meal replacement when your away from home. Im so picky with how I prefer my food cooked. They delivered spot on exactly what I asked for with me even having to be there in person to describe it. Such a filling meal for 10$. And there's leftover. Definitely bakersfields hidden gem ! I've past this spot many times and always wanted to try the food so today we did. I ordered chicken fried steak, eggs and potatoes and a cup of coffee. This place definitely has a dinner feel. It's only open for breakfast and lunch. I liked my food, but I didn't fall in love with my food. The restaurant was more than half full. I would come here again. The portions were large. I did really like my son's pancakes. The staff was nice and very helpful. This spot reminds me of a place I could go on a regular basis for breakfast or lunch. read more

I stopped by for lunch and was very pleasantly surprised. The service was excellent and friendly. They make you feel right at home.I had the spanish beef sandwich with some OUTSTANDING onion rings! They were fresh, crispy, and sweet at the same time. The modest exterior hides the simple, clean, and pleasant decor inside. The owners were happy to know it was my first time there and told me proudly about their week end roasted tri-tip specials. I've been eating at Donna Kaye's cafe for almost a decade off and on. Recently it was sold this year and a wonderful, caring and I must say loving couple bought it. Honestly I was afraid of what would happen to the service, food and the up keep. Well that's all clear To speak, not only is the atmosphere the same, they have raised the bar to a higher level which I did t think was possible. They have not only kept the place up but added to the look by remodeling and upgrading the look. Good job and high five to all of the staff and cooks, thanks for keeping it real. Food is great, service...not so much. I was thoroughly enjoying my omelette until my girlfriend pointed out that the waitresses were also acting as bus boys, washing tables and then serving food. And I don't just mean handing the plates I mean touching food, slicing bread and putting the slices onto plates. Not just one time, but this was ongoing. I had to stop watching because it was making me sick. If you're reading this and I haven't totally turned you off to this place, the food was actually pretty good and it certainly isn't the chefs' fault that the wait staff is not schooled in proper hygiene. I got the Kountry omelette and enjoyed the layers of different cheeses with the sausage, onions, and small slices of mushroom. Donna Kaye's is a tiny little cafe on Oak Street with an L shaped dining room the size of a wide hallway. Nobody seems bothered by the tight fit as the place is packed on a Sunday morning with a line of people waiting out the door. We sign in and then ask if we can sit outside on their covered patio which allows us to jump ahead of those waiting for indie seating, a move I highly recommend. The patio is twice as wide as the dining room and there are only two other tables occupied. The waitress seats us all at intervals so that we have a modicum of privacy, important as this is a working lunch even though it's with friends. She hurries off to bring us coffee and ice water leaving us to peruse the menu. Deferring to the wisdom of the Yelpers who came before me, I order the chile verde omelette with fried potatoes and biscuits and gravy. The food arrives quickly and in quite generous portions. I can't even half finish my omelette & potatoes (though the omelette was so amazingly good I gave it my best try) and I get only one bite of biscuits and gravy before I admit defeat. I'm uncomfortably full, and I bring home enough in the styrofoam to-go container for another full meal. The food is not cheap, $11.75 for my meal, $10 for most of the other omelettes, but for the amount of food they give you it's still a pretty good deal. The waitress was very friendly and got our order perfect, though we did have to ask for a refill on our coffee. She didn't try to rush us along in spite of how busy they were and I must admit we spent well over an hour chit chatting and getting caught up as it's not often these particular friends come to California for a visit. They lived in Bako for years before moving to Illinois and this is the restaurant they always pick for an after church brunch whenever they are in town. So if you want some down home good cooking in ridiculously large amounts, this is your spot. If you're trying to watch your waistline, well... it's your call. read more

This was a pure 3 star experience. I should have inquired what was their most popular and best items on the menu. I was craving buttermilk pancakes so that's all I got. My husband and I decided to stop by here for breakfast on the 4th of July. It actually wasn't as busy as we thought it might be and waited about 10 minutes for a table. Once seated we thought it was a little odd that there were two little Pomeranians running around. But they were cute and well groomed so whatever. The waitress brought out our waters pretty quickly. But that is where the good ended. We continued to sit for 15 minutes without so much as a glance from our waitress. Never got to give our order despite the fact they took the order from people who came in after us. After waiting just over 20 min, we were done waiting and extremely hungry so we got up and left. I still don't think they realized they completely forgot us. Although I'm not sure how, the restaurant is small and we were sitting right in front of the doorway where they went in and out of the kitchen. I'd love to be able to talk about the food everyone raves about, but we didn't get the chance to try it. Either way, we will not be back. Beside that, I'm still wondering how they can get away with having dogs in a restaurant and be in code. read more

This was our first visit to Donna Kaye's. Our server was the namesake Donna Kaye who was very friendly and accommodating. I had the hot roast beef sandwich with mashed potatoes and gravy while the wife had the rueben sandwich. Both food items were delicious and what you would expect to see in an old fashioned diner. Had breakfast with some of the family this morning, and I have to say that this place is pretty damn good! If you are looking for a good old-fashioned cafe, this is an excellent choice! We were seated and served by Donna Kaye herself, and she made sure that the orders were right and we had what we needed (except for an order of toast that was switched for biscuits and gravy, so no real complaints). I ordered a chile verde omelet with crispy hash browns and biscuits and gravy. It was all very tasty! Plenty of tender pork chunks in a mild green chile sauce, cheese and fluffy eggs! The Hobo Special that my sister ordered was also outstanding. The coffee is a bit on the weak side, but drinkable. The fact that they had Tabasco, Cholula and Tapatio hot sauces available was a big plus. Busy place but we were seated pretty quickly. They don't wait if you don't respond right away when calling customers from the waiting list. Although busy we were offered drinks right away and our order was taken shortly after. We didn't feel rushed, it was right on time. The food was good and tasty. We had a French toast combo and corned beef and cabbage in celebration of St Patrick's day. Both good. Coffee was good and service was prompt and very friendly. My search still goes on for the perfect breakfast place. While this was a nice place it was not my idea of the perfect place for me to eat due to the following: 1. There was no senior menu for us light eaters. 2. They were a little pricey 3. Portions were large so if I eat there again my husband and I will split one breakfast 4. My husband said his corn beef hash was only ok as his biscuit was dry, the gravy was bland and lacked meat, his hash browns were overcooked, and the overcooked corn beef hash lacked texture. I gave them three stars as I thought that my French toast was delicious, and we both agreed that the eggs were cooked just the way we liked them. Service was good but the floor had the look of a place where they did not sweep up after a heavy breakfast crowd. The atmosphere was nice being small and classic. I get so tired of places filled with artificial pieces of plastic and silk flowers all over the walls. This place had a simplicity that I liked. I think most people would like this place. It would be good for early morning diners as they open at 5:30 so they can compete with 24 hour places such as Denney's and IHOP. read more
