SOOO glad we use Yelp, the reviews and other information help us find gems like this one. I had the spicy sausage chilaquiles, my lady had her regular eggs/bacon/toast/hash browns. Both were just perfectly done! We are both kind of particular about our hash browns and bacon, and they did a fantastic job. The chilaquiles were just spicy enough that you could taste the fresh jalapenos but not so much that my face would turn red. Everything was just the right amount and very fresh. Good food. Service was good. Price was also good. I had a chicken fried steak, which was pretty darn good. Gravy was ok. Wife had pancakes....also great. Kids had a mix of eggs, pancakes, sausage patty (which is fantastic), and bacon. No complaints. All around good meal. read more

My fiance and I came here for breakfast on Saturday morning around 9:30am. We were able to find a table immediately, and servers helped us very quickly. Our food came out in surprisingly good time; I had the Carlsbad (avocado) eggs benedict and my finace had the french toast combo. My dish was tasty, and his french toast was especially delicious. I have always loved locally owned breakfast joints and haven't stepped into a Dennys or IHOP in years, and only then because it was my parents' tradition to have a Dennys' breakfast on Christmas as it was the only place open. We ventured from our usual breakfast spots to try Don's, as we needed to fuel up before hitting the Village Art Fair down the block. We sat at the counter and the service was quick efficient and friendly. The eggs were poached perfectly, but we were otherwise disappointed with the quality of the food. The corned beef hash was mushy, extremely salty and otherwise flavorless. The spicy "sausage" was a simple hot dog cut in half! I should be happy they didn't serve me a Vienna "sausage" but for a restaurant to call a hot dog a "sausage" with a straight face. . . ! It was a far cry from the flavorful and meaty sausages we are accustomed to at other local places. read more

I don't get it. Don's is in a great location. Staff are VERY friendly and pleasant. But this is my second time there and I have to say it is barely fair. Coffee is not good. The food is unseasoned. I had an omelette that was bland beyond belief. I NEVER pick up a salt shaker, and I have to season both the omelette and the hashbrowns so they had some flavor. 2nd time - no return visit for me. Have yet to find a local joint that is excellent for breakfast. read more

This place has gone downhill. The service is a joke- the last two times I have gone, I have waited 15-20 minutes before being acknowledged only to have a server with a crappy attitude. Food was served quickly and we were attended to in a timely manner. Indoor and out door seating is available. I ordered eggs over easy, bacon and hash browns. All were to my liking but nothing extraordinary. My wife ordered scrambled eggs, waffle, and bacon. She enjoyed the food but it was as we expected it to be, good not great. I had the pancakes with scrambled eggs and bacon and my husband had a waffle with sausage and eggs over easy. Mine was perfect, his wasn't as good--the sausage was cremated...but the eggs were cooked perfectly. Service was great. We'd go again. read more

I walked up for lunch and sat outside at an umbrella table on the sidewalk. The girl who waited on me was very pleasant and attentive. I ordered the Specialty of the house, BBQ turkey with fries, and iced tea. The taste was just ok, with a little too much honey in the sauce, I think. No after effects, so the food must have been fresh. Price for all that, with tip, was about $14 bucks. Enjoy. read more

looked on yelp, and decided to try for breakfast while visiting the area. we were not disappointed! the breakfast was deli ious, french toast, sausage and eggs for husband, I had ham and cheese omelet. we never had to ask for refill on beverages, waitress asked many times how things were, did we need anything else. we were stuffed, and didn't eat again until dinner. will be back next visit! read more

We had a big breakfast at Don's while nursing a wedding hangover from the night before. This is a small place so we had to wait a while but at least they brought us coffee outside to tide us over. I had an omelette which was fluffy and delicious served with pretty good homefries. Everyone else in my party ordered some sort of Eggs Benedict and the homemade holandaise sauce was awesome. Also, the biscuits and gravy are a must try. These plates are huge so we were not able to finish anything. read more

This is my favorite spot in the Village to eat breakfast. If you like Eggs Benedict you will love Dons! They have really good portions of food and the prices are right. Its a small place and if you go on the weekend you will have to wait and its a little unorganized. Its definetly as mom and pop as it gets here. They also have really good coffee...and you can sit outside and eat and enjoy people watching (one of my favorite passtimes) Ultimate Comfort breakfast spot in town. read more

Another 3.5 stars restaurant. A little bit better than average but not quite up to 4 stars in my opinion. Nice solid hole-in-the-wall greasy spoon. Small, simple and classic diner fair. Stumbled upon this place yesterday during the Carlsbad Village Fair, and were delighted as we really enjoy Ma-n-Pop joints. Don's certainly felt that vibe from the moment we walked in. Decided to take our seats at the counter to really get a feel for the joint. Lots of staff busy in varying capacities, but seemingly all knowing what to do. Front of the house, behind the counter was a bit cluttered and could benefit from a serious cleaning and reorg of product and such stacked around. Staff all was super friendly and speedy. We met a very nice woman sitting next to us that owned another local business across the street. She swore up and down on the menu. We got the club sandwhich/fries and a chicken salad on rye bread with slaw. Both were quite good, certainly had their share of sodium. I was surprised that there was no soda fountain. Sodas were from a can. Must be a reason for that. Quick service with the good delivery and we'll be back. read more

What a fantastic experience. The food was great and the service was even better. Great flavors in every dish. Although there was no wait today (Saturday at about 9:30 a.m.), I could see how a wait could develop very easily. The restaurant has that true country feel but it is rather small. Have been 2 times now. Food was terrific both times, but the coffee was terrible. My only complaint about the food is way too much gravy (but really good gravy) on the biscuits, on the hash browns, on the sausage, just way too much. read more

Good quick serves at reasonable prices with a donut shop on one side and a danish bakery on the other side. I would drive off the freeway for breakfast at this location. Far better than any of the chains on the freeway. read more

Terrible service!! After walking in with my friend and our 3 kids, nobody bothered to greet us, we stood at the door for about 10 minutes until we asked if we should seat ourselves. There was only one table available for 5 people and it was dirty, we asked the waitress if she could clean this off for us and completely ignored us, we found some napkins and wiped it down ourselves. 30 minutes later and still no waitress, no drinks offered, we decided we did not want this kind of treatment. We are locals and long time customers. Back in November of 2015, we noticed some new faces on the staff and a marked decrease in the experience. Waiting more than 10 minutes to have someone pay attention to us once we are seated has become the new norm here. No water, no coffee, nothing. The food is still great, but the attitude of the servers has really impacted the overall pleasure of having a nice weekend breakfast here. Sad to say, after 3 tries with a server who clearly doesn't like her job, we will be taking our breakfast business to another Carlsbad establishment, and keeping an eye on Don's to see if this particular server disappears before we go back to try it again. read more
