I almost gave this place 4 stars. Let's call it 3.5. Food was excellent, all in all. Great gumbo, good blackened red fish, and excellent red beans and rice. Negatives: while I loved our server, it took forever to get our food. It may not have been her fault, but we got the impression she forgot to put our order in. The other negative is 10-oz beer size. They were out of their "little mugs" so I had a regular 12-oz beer glass - and it was clearly not full. I obviously had a skeptical look on my face because our server explained - sorry, they're out of the usual smaller mugs. The usual smaller mugs? Really? You serve 10-oz beers? She nods, clearly embarrassed - not her fault and she's sorry. But it left a lame taste in my mouth about the place. Skimping on 2 oz is not cool in my book... I was visiting from Texas, and our beers come in 12-, 16-, and 22-oz sizes, unless you're ordering a flight of samplers. read more

Yuck! I gave this place many chances, but NEVER have they gotten my order right. What they do get right does not taste great...nothing is really good. And don't take your children around the bar during evening hours. We got up and left one night because the bartender and a patron were dropping the F-bomb in every sentence. Great food and ambiance! We stumbled across this restaurant on a road trip and had been eating at the more typical chains along the freeway so Don's was a treat! Great seafood and service as well as an authentic Louisiana feel to it, hence the alligator at the entrance. My boyfriend and I had the best experience at Don's in Hammond just the other night. I have been going to the Metairie location my entire life. The Hammond location OUTSHINES the Metairie location. The atmosphere was so upbeat and the food was delicious. Our server, Abby, was awesome! She made sure that we had everything we needed. She also was very helpful. My boyfriend couldn't decide if he wanted the catfish acadian or shrimp étouffée. Abby told us that he could actually get shrimp étouffée rather than crawfish for the catfish acadian. I had the grilled stuffed shrimp, and it was AMAZING!!!! I will definitely be back to eat at Don's!! I cannot wait to bring my parents and siblings to Hammond location, so that they can see how much better it is than the Metairie one!!! read more

Traveling through and stopped because it was recommended. The raw oysters were GREAT, but the char broiled ones were EXCEPTIONAL. But what really was exceptional was my waiter, Jeremy . He was totally on top of everything. He was one step ahead all the time and making sure everything was perfect. We are traveling back to Texas and decided to stop and try this place out! We had the fried boudin balls, the chard-boiled oysters (which are AMAZING!), the seafood sampler and the crawfish! The crawfish are the reason for only 3 stars! I ordered 1lb of hot boiled crawfish and what I got was OLD, COLD and FISHY CRAWFISH. Not at all what I was expecting! Our waiter was extremely nice and very attentive, she offered to take it back and get me something else so I got a side salad (which is no side, it is a big salad!) Our server was unprofessional, unfriendly, undertrained, and all around awful. Food was incorrect multiple times and could have been avoided by simply writing down an order. I have eaten here many times over the years but not lately until today. I hate to say it but it is just not as good as it use to be. The lunch seafood platter was mixed. The fried catfish was Middendorfs thin and just as good but the shrimp was grossly overlooked as well as the oysters although they were quality oysters so they were still pretty good but could have been better. The gumbo was also mediocre which is really disappointing for a place the use to have some of the best in south Louisiana. Even the hush puppies were not the really the great hush puppies that they had several years ago. It makes no sense to me. Oh well, I hate it but it is what it is. The wait staff is top notch though. It would be nice if the cooks paid a little more attention to details. read more

I ate here twice on my trip to Louisiana. The first time I sat to the bar during a Monday Night Football and I felt bad for the bartenders. They were serving everyone seated at the bar and filling the drink orders for the restaurant; they were running. I got the Charbroiled Oysters which were amazing! I had to wait a bit for my order, but I was ok with that because I was there for the game. Not much of a Seafood eater, but went to Don's with my friends who wanted boiled Crawfish. The waiter very young, but polite, respectful, and super knowledgeable of the menu and courses. The atmosphere just right with slightly dimmed lights, TV's on multiple walls tuned to SportCenter, and low music in the background. I had red beans and rice with hushpuppies. Perfect. The fact that this place is busy even on week nights is an indication of its quality. The wait staff are local college students, and they are very well trained. The service is excellent. Our waiter on our most recent trip was a nice young lady named Nora. As for the food, it is traditional southern seafood. I always get the fried catfish with Don's mashed potatoes, accompanied by hush puppies and seafood gumbo. My husband gets either shrimp and grits or crawfish etouffee. The portions are generous, and the food is well cooked. The atmosphere is very comfortable--a relaxing place for dinner. The only thing that should be improved is their desserts. Pulled off of the interstate to try this place. They were out of crab so our seafood platter was supposedly supplemented with additional shrimp for the two items that were unavailable due to the crab shortage. Tasted good but the portion size was dismal; we also got one chicken strip plate for the kids, 3 tiny strips and a handful of fries. I had Kennedy as a waitress. She was very kind and professional. Although the restaurant advertised hot dogs, there were no hot dogs. I was sad. I was ashamed, and I felt bamboozled. If it wasn't for the excellent service provided by Kennedy, my weekend would have been ruined. Been here a couple dozen times and it's always been good. Today was HORRIBLE!! Jacked up and chargrilled oysters were still raw! Shells were ice cold. Mashed potatoes ice cold. Gumbo ice cold. Table next to me oysters were old and had bad smell were returned. Steaks over cooked. Sad this place used to be great and now I'm not sure I'll be back. Asked if they had new owners and was told no but they were trying to go "more corporate". Bad choice in my opinion. Wait staff was nice and apologetic. Shouldn't have to do that. I recently went to Don's for the first time and I could not have been more pleased. Everything about the restaurant was above par. I had Jacked Up Shrimp and catfish Acadian and they were delicious. What I was most impressed with was the service. I made sure to ask our waitress's name (Samantha) so I could ask for her again! She was outstanding. I don't think my drink ever went below half full! I felt taken care of and she happily got me anything I asked for. I can definitely see myself becoming a regular there. read more
