Donut World is one of the few remaining truly vintage places with character in the Sunset--most everything now is replaced with faux hipster shops like Snowbird and Hollow, and I'm sure that sooner or later there will be a posh shiny Blue Bottle and/or organic gluten-free cage-free donut shop in the neighborhood. Anyways, Donut World is open almost 24 hours (closed 2:30-4:30am which for my intents and purposes is as good as 24/7), and they always have a fantastic selection of fresh donuts. They have all the classic flavors (coconut, chocolate, cinnamon, maple, plain for those on pseudo diets, and more) and a wide variety of forms (fritters, the popular French cruller, mini, regular, bars, and even different flavors of donut holes). Although it's not gimmicky like the funky colors and flavors of Twisted, there is something comforting about a reliably high-quality donut staple. Service is consistently friendly and fast, and prices are definitely a steal (especially when you compare to the bouge pastries at Arizmendi!) Donut World is my favorite for bringing treats for a group since it's so conveniently close to UCSF, inexpensive, easy to serve, and with a nice wow factor. I always get some donut holes as well so people can dose their donuts as they wish. read more

Prior to my recent infatuation with Bob's Donuts, this was my go-to donut shop in San Francisco. It's conveniently located near two of the Muni bus stops that I frequent most. They're always open which means if Muni is late (all the time!) I can run in and grab a snack and run right back out. The selection is very good during daytime hours but quite limited at night. They have lots of seating inside which can be helpful on those very cold nights. On certain nights when the NextMuni GPS signs alert me of a lengthy delay, I'd go in and purchase a cup of hot tea or hot chocolate and relax with a donut. The staff is always very friendly. They have cold beverages, sodas and dairy products also. There are a couple of favorites here that I haven't found at Bob's or enjoy more from Donut World. This is why Inner Sunset decidedly beats the WP in the neighborhood wars: 24 hour food. Ok, it's just donuts, but isn't there some comfort knowing this place will always be open, whether you're coming back from bars or heading for some 6 AM flight? Trouble is, it only works if they actually have donuts at all hours (and preferably a decent selection). We snagged some of the last remaining specimens at 10:30 PM, and by 12:30 they were completely out. Maybe they were gearing up for the 2 AM rush, but still, when a donut shop has no donuts, it's time to close. Ergo, if they are going to be always open, there must ALWAYS BE DONUTS. This place is a life saver if you're aimlessly walking around the Sunset area, pretty close to UCSF. The place is open 24hrs, and has your coffee and milk if you prefer. I can't even go down the list of donuts because it goes on for days. The exterior and interior has not changed fo decades, has that nice classic look of bakeries from the 60's. Parking is not great in the area, and some late points out of the day the selection of donuts can be a little scarce, but are still available. They offer plain donut holes, as well as custard and jelly filled (which are absolutely delicious; 40 cents each or $2 for 6). Donut World sells regular donuts for 90 cents each and specialty donuts are just a little bit more. Their donuts are always fresh and they always have a plentiful stock. They also have other baked goods such as danishes or croissants, although I've never tried them because I always have my mind set on donuts. It looked like they had just baked a fresh batch of every kind of donut imaginable. The donuts were a bit pricey at almost a dollar each. I remember when I was younger that donuts used to cost 50 cents. Like the price of gas, it went up a lot. They also serve juices and drinks, but I was not able to try them this time around. The atmosphere looked a bit dated, but it has a classical timelessness because it looks like they've been around for at least 50 years judging by the furniture. There were tables and chairs available all by the windows. It's also very close to public transportation so it's very accessible. It's also close to Golden Gate park, shopping and other dining areas if you plan to stay around the area for a couple hours. WORST MANAGEMENT EVER. DON'T USE THEIR ATM. Sure, I was in there at 1am, but who isn't? It's the only decent donut shop in the area open at this time. CASH ONLY, so I tried to get cash from THEIR machine, and it did NOT dispense the cash that was charged to my card. (It already shows in my online banking system.) I spoke with the ladies there and they insisted that they are only workers, they can't help me, and to call the number listed. (Trying to get a number from them was a whole thing.) I walked out. I was nearly home when I realized that when I call my bank, it'll be a game of who said what. I walked back and asked for their names. They made such a fuss. Finally, Lilah gave up her name. I see her all the time because I'm happy to support a local business. I also told her she was not nice when she was trying to brush me off without really helping me. She then admitted that this happened often! (Just woww...) I tried to order something, and she insisted that they were closing. I can't stand liars, and I'm so disappointed it's the manager of the biz of who I've supported for so long! I like how this place always seems to be open. It's right by the N Judah line, so if you're ever feeling frustrated about waiting for the bus to come, you can just pop into Donut World for a quick sugar fix. There's some booth seating that faces the street. The interior is in need of some major cleaning- the walls seemed worn down, and I couldn't find any seat where there wasn't some kind of crumb or jelly stuck to the table. There was a woman with a parrot (on the table, I might add) that I would have to pass in order to get a drink, so I thought I would be polite and let the woman know I needed to pass her parrot. The minute I spike up, she should hover a hand my way, blocking her mouth, and started shouting. At this point, I explain I am deaf and cannot understand her. Don't come here if expecting quality. Their donuts are very average (but not cheap), but I ordered a bagel with ham and cheese and it was the most disappointing thing ever for $5. I watched the worker take a small plain bagel out of a Kirkland bag, wrap a slice of Kraft cheese in some ham, then microwave it all together. I awoke around 5:00, maybe earlier. There was some kind of ruckus going on but I could not tell what was going on, or why. Finally, at 6:00 I got up since any more sleep was out of the question. I took one last look and then walked the two blocks up to the 24/7 donut shop - Donut World As I sat there drinking my coffee and enjoying my cake donut with crumbles I took a look around to see who I was keeping company with. Customer # 1 was also sitting at the window counter. He was deeply involved in using some small hand tools and was manipulating something inside of a shallow box. Customer # 2 sat at the back and was slumped forward in his seat, sound asleep. Customer # 3 was dressed in a heavy winter coat and wore a heavy wool aviator's cap trimmed with fur. His blond hair spilled out from under his hat and hung in curly strings down to his waist. He sat there quietly and nearly motionless with a hardcover book open in front of him.
