Not a lot of options are open at this time, even in the heart of San Diego, so I was glad to stop by for a donut or two. I ordered 2 donuts, a strawberry and glazed old fashion which came out to $6. I thought it was pricey but attributed it to the outrageous egg prices. When I got home, I was pleasantly surprised to see that there was 3 donuts inside. $1.99 for a homemade donut? What a steal! Old fashioned donuts are my favorite and these tasted great (4/5). If it was a tad lighter on the oil like the Japanese Mister Donuts, would have been a perfect score. I came here on a morning walk and decided to bring back the family a fun treat. These donuts are very pretty, but more importantly they taste good! It wouldn't be enough for me if they were just lookers. This is a no frills on the inside donut shop. The biggest "frill" they have is their cost. I spent $23.25 for 6 donuts and a cold brew. And when you really think about it that's crazy. After reviewing my receipt it seems they charged me the price per donut instead of by the 1/2 dozen. Not sure why, it made my order way more expensive but I didn't really notice at the time. It was early at 7am, I wasn't doing the math yet lol. But, I've said on other donut shop reviews, the prices at donut shops are exorbitant and the only reason I go is because they are a "treat" and not something I would eat regularly. They are small cakes at this point, Not the simple donuts of the past. If you can believe it, donuts used to be .70 cents (or less) a pop. Just in my short lifetime. This time I paid almost $3 each. Anyway, just a rant I have with donut prices in general. Another thing definitely not worth getting here is the cold brew, $6 and very basic, comes black and not the best quality. It was bitter tasting. I added some international delight creamer to make it better. Just go to a coffee shop instead. But this place gets decent stars because the donuts are delicious. By premium, I mean donuts with additional topping (cookies, cereal, etc.) Shoutout to Francisco! We were able to place a last minute Birthday Donut Cake order less than 24hrs and pick up the next morning for my 16 year old's birthday He has always been extremely nice and has helped us out in a pinch when we were looking for a ton of conchas (Mexican Sweet Bread) for a last minute Cinco de Mayo celebration a couple of months ago. There was a variety that we chose and we made sure we chose donuts that were unique. We got a few maple flavored goodies (donut, twist, and bar), red velvet, sprinkles, sugar donut and twist, strawberry filled, chocolate and maple swirl. Date of visit: January 29, 2022 The former California Donuts location has now become Donutopolis - this store and its sister location in Poway are run by a pair of brothers that used to work at Donut Touch. While this location has vegan and gluten-free options, those weren't what I was looking for when I came here for breakfast this morning. I'd heard they had a cronut here, plus I really wanted an apple fritter. So, for a total of $3.75, I got my order & got my nosh on. The apple fritter was big, chewy, and full of apple goodness; just what I expected. The cronut, however, wasn't what I was expecting... instead of a combination of a croissant and a donut, Donutopolis' version is a glazed croissant. Certainly different, but different is still good. Clean place inside, friendly staff, and the table and seats outside have been refurbished. Looks like in addition to fried chicken, Mira Mesa is certainly becoming known for its myriad of donut places! I'm the biggest donut snob and usually go to one place for donuts. My friend kept telling me her "Donut Man" moved to Mira Mesa from Santee and told me I needed to try it once. After a few months of her nagging, I finally went and was pleasantly surprised to see the owner, Francisco, who used to work at the donut place I used to go to! Francisco is very experienced and offers a diverse menu. So it isn't a surprise that we liked the same donut place. Donutoplis serves delicious donuts, amazing cronuts, conchas, tasty breakfast sandwiches and other specialty items like cinnamon rolls on Saturdays and sometimes chocolate chip cookies! They had a really good variety and had every option required by the family. I actually had opted for a hot breakfast option. Everything Bagel with Bacon Cheese and Egg, and was completely happy with that creation. Perfectly toasted bagel, melted cheese, enough egg to cover the entire bagel as well as the bacon. Sorry, normally that would be highlighted in my photo, however I was just hungry! Also had a mixed variety of donut holes that were very good as well. Soft and fresh as they should be. We placed an order for a 3 layer donut cake for Mother's Day a week ahead of time, but when we went to pick-up our order today the cashier lets us know that "...he told me to tell you that he made a mistake with the second layer, so we're just going to charge you for the price of a single donut cake..." and grabs the box. When she opened the box to show me the cake, it looked nothing like the pictures of what they have in the website / pictures in-store. The bottom donut was frumpy and melted on the edges, the middle layer is just 3 chocolate donuts with smudges on the side put together (to replace the middle layer that was missing), and a PB&J donut at the top with the icing partly smudged too. We were disappointed and taken aback upon seeing our order. It was unappetizing to look at and we didn't have the gut to give it to our Mom for Mother's Day. There was no explanation of why they messed up our order. There was no call to let us know that our order had been screwed up - they had our contact information and they had 1 week between when we placed the order and when we picked it up - so they could've called us at some point to give us a heads up about their mistake and offered us a full refund, especially if they weren't going to make a new cake to replace the one they've screwed up for a special occasion. They get 1 star because the cashier apologized for the state of the cake and offered us a small discount. We ended up buying a box of half dozen donuts so we can at least give our Mom something sweet to replace the donut cake we were supposed to give her (another disappointment - they barely had any flavors to choose from today too). It seems like there are so many donut places in town to choose from, and Donutopolis is amongst the best! I had been meaning to visit this location after hearing about their opening a while ago, but just came here recently on 2 different occasions. I have tried around five different types of donuts here, and all of them are delicious! My personal favorite is the bear claw, although if I don't want something too big, I'll probably get a maple old-fashioned. The ones that I've tried have been moist and not too dry. They also have a lot of coffee and espresso drinks that are really reasonably priced. This location is always clean and not too busy either. He knows how to make perfect donuts. He has a great selection, fresh, and it is consistent. Chocolate old-fashions are my favorite. These are difficult to get right. I was really happy to get one of these - great frosting, moist cake, just the right level of brown on the outside. The location is very convenient if you live near Vons. Up the street from Camino Ruiz Park. Anyway - I really like this place and was glad to see Francisco back in Mira Mesa. I don't do many reviews - I have to feel very strongly. As far as donuts and breakfast sandwiches go, this is the best in east county. We've been coming here since they opened and the quality is always consistent. The donuts are as fresh as they come. The family favorites are the blueberry cake, the red velvet with cream cheese frosting, the chocolate Bavarian cream, and the pink sprinkle cake for the little one. Always a crowd pleaser. The bagels are perfect with a New York style crunch on the outside and soft, fresh and pillowy on the inside.
