We had a terrific lunch today at Dos Coyotes in San Ramon. The employees were very friendly. The food came out quickly, the salsa bar is the best in the east bay and the $5 margarita was delicious. Long line to get into overly-noisy place with bad food. Ordered chips & guacamole, a pork burrito and a beer. No good beers on tap, so ordered a bottled beer, alas, they have no list of bottled beers, and cashier had to use his personal bottle opener since there isn't one at the register (??). Salsa bar has several options, but it turns out your real choice is between mediocre and inedible because of sweetener being added. Yep, confirmed with the staff, that they add Agave nectar to some salsas. Sounds like a lawsuit from a diabetic waiting to happen. Guacamole is boring, and it too is a little sweet. Chips taste like Doritos rejects: no flavor and no freshness. Burrito is supposed to be pork, but has so little meat, it's hard to tell. Well, at least the staff is friendly. read more

Yesterday around 1:00 pm, I ordered a hatch chili quesadilla to go. I ended up eating there as there were plenty of tables. After a few bites, I realized that there were no chilis in the quesadilla. I walked up to the counter and was approached by an African American male (not the tall one who took my order which was very nice, but the shorter one) who was very unfriendly. I told him the situation, but he acted like he didn't believe me. I had to open up the box and pull the quesadilla apart TWICE to get this rude person to believe me. I was shocked. Then he starts going through the receipts (I didn't have one as they did not give me one or offer one). I said I would just take some chilis on the side and put them in myself. He then told the cook to give him some chilis and gave them to me in a container they usually put salsa in without saying a word. This person never apologized, didn't tell the cook he made it wrong, did not offer to make it right, and was downright rude and unpleasant. I hope management does something about him. read more

What a fantastic place. The food is made fresh to order, no heat lamps here. I had the Paella Burrito and it was excellent. The shrimp in it was cooked perfectly. I know this phrase is overused, but it is fitting here. I would say 99% of the shrimp I have had is overlooked and chewy. Not here, shrimp has a definite pop to it. Went in for lunch and it was amazing. Had to order what most would consider a "boring" meal since I've cut out carbs but let me tell you, my burrito bowl with just steak, cheese and lettuce was AMAZING! This place had large burritos, for a decent price! I LOVE their roasted tomatillo salsa, It is my main reason for constantly returning here. I do want to point out that this place is not authentic Mexican food taqueria food, it is much more on the Tex-Mex vibe but then again it does say it in the name "border cafe". After my wife complained, they gave a new one, still wasn't good...Very poor salsa bar.. food wasn't tasty at all, we left half plates of all dishes we ordered. will never come back here again, in fact this was our 5th visit since their opening here. First of all, they have a gluten free menu so it was easy to figure out what I could eat. I ordered three tacos and asked the guy at the counter what meat I should select. He suggested the shrimp or the beef. I ended up ordering shrimp, beef and chicken to try a variety . The shrimp which I don't usually order in a Mexican restaurant was DELICIOUS! It was cooked perfectly. The beef was really good too. The chicken was fine too, but next time it will be shrimp tacos for me. And the salsas were great. What a salsa bar. So many to choose from. My husband had the mahi mahi tacos and loved them too. Huge portions by the way. Great value. Better than I expected it would be. My only complaint? Visited Dos Coyotes today for first time. I have Celiacs and don't go to many restaurants. They have a gf menu. It was delicious. I'm always Leary of getting food even if it says gf. Or even asking. A lot of places aren't knowledgeable or even make their servers aware of what it means to have a gluten allergy. I have the burrito bowl with chicken. Really good. Nice size. Chicken was plain, which I liked!! Server asked if I wanted it with lettuce. Everything was fresh and delicious. I had to ask for a Togo box because I couldn't finish it. But I wanted to keep eating! Place is clean and lines were doable. I will for sure go back. I don't eat at chipotle but if I did I would go here before there. Next time I plan on trying another item. Our first visit and we certainly had high hopes for a great new restaurant. We ordered Border Chicken Burritos. Very tasteless with no sauce. Just chicken, beans and rice. Very very bland. I tried Dos Coyotes for the first time tonight 6/7/2017. My first impression, was that the place looked nice. But...it is very loud inside. My friend and I were straining to have a normal conversation with each other. Theres hard surface everywhere, so the sound echoes like an empty swimming pool. The staff really seemed confused. There must have been 20 employees bumping around behind the counter, many with nothing really to do but laugh and talk to each other. Too many employees never translates into efficiency or profit! The staff didn't seem really trained either, nor were they hand picked for their customer service skills. It kinda felt like I was ordering food at the DMV, No excitement, no food suggestions (even after saying it was my first time). They acted like order takers only! As a new customer, I had no clue how the place was laid out or operated. I was given a warm glass with ice in it, an order number on a tall stick and sent on my way. Ok now what do I do? After walking around trying to figure the system out, I realized I needed to start fetching things like a table, silverware, napkins, drinks and etc. The menu says they have Chips and Salsa, well I found a salsa area (bar), but no chips in sight...anywhere, So I asked at the counter and was told "you will get them with your dinner". Well ok!....in the mean time thou, I will sit here and stare at my salsa and chew my fingernails. My friend and I both ordered the 3 enchilada platter. When the food came out, it was COLD and pretty flavorless. The enchiladas were small and missing any memorable flavor, the rice was bland and cold too. The refried beans were bland and blah. There were a "few" tortilla chips stuck in the food on top of the plate (finally some chips). Not sure broken chips are a traditional Mexican garnish? Later an employee came to take our plates and asked "are you done"? (we hadn't really eaten much) we said "yes" and he said "I hope you liked the food" and I smiled and said "Well?" I was going to share a comment with him on the food (nicely!) but he walked away so quickly, I never got that chance. Overall this place felt like it was run by volunteer helpers, only lightly trained with no visible management presence. I sure hope they figure out how things "should" be and what brings customers back, somebody spent a lot of money making this place look nice, but forgot to focus on the business inside. read more

This is the worst "Mexican" restaurant I've ever been to! I've tried this place three different times in the hopes that maybe it has changed but has not. The food is so over priced, it's not that good and the staff isn't all that great. I've ordered shrimp tacos (disappointment, just shrimp with a tone of lettuce and a sprinkle of cheese..), I've ordered taquitos (not bad but seriously 4 skinny taquitos for $10!), and I've ordered a shrimp burrito( nothing special just a simple shrimp burrito, oh except they had the spiciest salsa or chile I've ever had and I'm Mexican so I've had some spicy stuff, and it was all centered on one side of the burrito...) All the times I've gone the staff has been out of control like they don't know what their doing, I've had my to go order sit there for 10mins before I checked to see what the hold up was... If I want non authentic Mexican food I'm better off going to Rubios. read more

I love the flavors of this place! We've tried probably 1/3 of their items here. Though I love the flavor, here is what I feel is wrong about this place. Salads - I'm not sure why the salad is not consistent. Shouldn't the same salad have the same ingredients every time. I swear, 3 times we have ordered the Yucatan chicken salad and all 3 times it was different. First time was the best. 2nd time, they added Jicama (which is not on the list of ingredients). 3rd time, they added canned pineapples????? The other problem, hot food is not served hot, at least not the shrimp burrito/burrito bowl. It is consistently lukewarm!!! There was another shrimp and scallop seasonal special last month and that was served piping hot so not sure why the different standards. read more

We've been going to Dos Coyotes since our college days up in Davis, and when they opened the location in Concord, we got excited, then when they opened this location in San Ramon, we were ecstatic bc we're just a short drive away. The food quality is pretty consistent with all the other Dos locations, but the service here is the worst of all the Dos locations, and we've been here multiple times. The staff is slow to bus the tables and slow to address customer needs. This past Saturday, we went in for a late lunch around 2pm. As usual, tables weren't bussed, and there's a few people who work there milling around or just moving at a snail's pace. The salsa bar was out of most of the different kinds of salsa, and I asked multiple times to have it restocked or at least to give me some salsa so that we could eat our food before it got cold. The first time I asked, the first guy responded with "oh, someone is supposed to be doing it" and proceeded to try to find whoever was supposed to be refilling the salsa bar and reminding them to do it. After ten minutes, I went back to ask if I could get some salsa verde from behind the counter just so that we could eat our chips and some of our food with salsa (we started eating without since we didn't want our food to get cold), to which a different guy behind the counter said to me that someone is working on stocking the salsa bar. Ok, so you can't be bothered to give me some salsa to address my immediate need? By the END OF OUR MEAL, someone finally started to restock the salsa bar. I wasn't the only customer that went to ask about refilling the salsa bar, multiple people did while we were there. I question if their owners or management know that this location isn't up to par with their others, and I get new restaurant opening it takes a couple months to find a rhythm, but there's a time limit that you can use that as an excuse. I wonder why they didn't transfer some of their more experienced staff to this new location to help with the opening first and train new people, or if they have, nothing has been retained. I love Dos coyotes and I am a former Davis Aggie. I was so excited to see they opened up in San Ramon. I have ordered the Adobe salad to go twice. When they forgot the guacamole the first time and it took over 30 minutes to get my meal, I blamed it on growing pains. Tonight, they forgot the warm black beans that makes the salad awesome. Sadly, I do not think I will be returning to this location anymore. It will have to be a treat when I am driving through Davis. Maybe the Concord location is better. read more

Really disappointed. The only bean that is vegan is the refried beans, not the black beans. I told them about my preference to eat vegan and they recommended a salad, which I purchased, knowing the black beans were not vegan and trusting the staff recommendation. When I received my salad black beans were mixed into the salad. UGH! I am not hard core so I decided to eat it anyway. There was WAY to much dressing on it. My husbands said his dish was Okay. Too much lolligagging around by the staff while those of us on lunch breaks have time constraints. If you have time, the food looked OK. I can't rate the food because I only have an hour and that's not enough time to eat here. It would be smart to have more than one register open during the lunch rush. Waiting 15 minutes to be able to order is not acceptable. This has happened both times I've tried to eat here. This is a good place for people who don't have other things to do during the day. First time at Dos Coyotes in years. In college I was a big fan of their Davis location and the new Turlock one brought back all my fond memories. Jason at the counter was patient and accommodating while our large group made up their minds. Fresh salsa bar is a delight and they were generous with chips.
