This was a very nice and accommodating location and staff. We recently held my stepfather's service here and the location was nice and spacious. The staff were also very helpful. Selena went above and beyond to make sure we had everything we needed the night of and made sure we were able to pick up larger flower arrangements the following day to be more accommodating. If I could give them a zero I would. They have your loved one and hold it hostage for an exorbitant fee. I was out of the country when my spouse passed away and our local police department recommended this mortuary. Other than them picking up and holding the body for a few days I did no other services with them. Apparently since I didn't use their services they felt they would still charge me as if I had done a cremation with them. They give discounts so that if you use their burial services you pay less than if you transport to another mortuary. My father had passed away two weeks prior and the cost of picking up his body, preparing for cremation, cremation box and cremation fees was half of what I paid. Don't use this company they cheat you out of thousands of dollars while you are in a state of shock. read more

This review is long overdue. My mother passed 11/23/19 in the early morning hours (about 2 am). We did not have prior arrangements, but I called Douglass & Zook and not only did they answer, but everyone I came in contact with was kind, sincere, and helpful. They picked up my mother fairly quickly, and were respectful about letting us say our goodbyes. Later that day we had an appointment with Cornelio to discuss funeral arrangements and packages. When we arrived, there were warm chocolate chip cookies, water bottles and tissues in the meeting room. What I expected to be a long and stressful process was anything but. Cornelio walked us through every step, never pressuring us to buy or choose anything we did not want. The appointment lasted a few hours (it went by fast) and at the end I felt a sense of relief knowing they were taking care of everything. Thankfully we had until 24hrs before the funeral date to pay in full for the services purchased. Let me just say that no detail went unnoticed. The staff worked over the holiday (the funeral was on black friday) and made sure that everything went smoothly. They communicated and made sure to get approval for pictures/slideshows, etc. A huge shoutout to Matt who not only put the slideshow together perfectly, but was able to add the song I wanted to it even though the links I sent weren't working. That little detail was incredibly thoughtful and so deeply appreciated. I cannot thank the staff at Douglass & Zook enough for their kind words, support, and attention to detail. My 700th review!!! It seems strange to write a review for a funeral home, but I really want to put this place on the map and give this establishment the credit it deserves. One of my beloved recently passed away and unfortunately, arrangements had to be made almost immediately, as hospitals cannot typically retain bodies. Thankfully, after calling around to several different funeral homes, we found Douglass & Zook. From beginning to end, Douglass & Zook were an absolute pleasure to work with. We worked primarily with Matthew Zook, who was extremely professional and sensitive to our needs. First, he coordinated the funeral service, transportation to the burial site, and burial service flawlessly, so that the timing was just right for traveling between the two sites. Second, Matt oversaw all three of these aspects very closely with his team to personally ensure they all ran smoothly. For instance, during the burial service, he indiscreetly and respectfully picked up any flowers my family placed on the casket that accidentally fell off due to the wind. He also set up a large canopy for shade right next to the burial site and brought ice cold mini waters, which were both greatly appreciated since the burial was held on a sweltering hot day. It was clear that Matt paid attention to all of the details, which we were grateful for, since it's naturally difficult to focus on those issues when you're grieving. Third, he was extremely compassionate throughout the whole process. It was evident that Matt was always trying to make our lives easier, as he offered thoughtful gestures such as mailing the death certificate to us, having his team assist with transporting the casket down the hill to the burial site, or transporting the flowers after the burial to our car. He also asked us if we needed more time for our funeral service and was evidently sympathetic to our grieving. Fourth, the prices here are extremely reasonable, especially in comparison to many other nearby funeral homes. In fact, their prices were so good that we actually asked them to do the engraving on the headstone, as opposed to having the burial site perform the engraving. During such a difficult time in our lives, we were so thankful for Matt and his awesome team! They truly went above and beyond! Come to think of it, everyone at the home was super kind, caring and compassionate, as they constantly asked us how we were doing and made sure we were being emotionally supported, while receiving great customer service. Also, the actual facilities are warm, friendly and inviting - not dark and cold like some of the other funeral homes we checked out. I really can't speak highly enough about all of the arrangements, as everything was executed beautifully and well organized - which I felt best honored my beloved (who I miss dearly!) and the rest of my family. If you recently lost a loved one or just want to plan ahead for the future, I can't think of a better place to go to than Douglass & Zook! If I could give negative stars I would. After my dad passed on New Years, we scrambled to find a funeral home for arrangements. Others we've known have used Douglass & Zook in the past, and I was given direct contact information for Alice (who was a Godsend in the wee hours of the morning. Alice was an angel but no longer works there...a sign). We were assigned to Mark for the arrangements. Four days after dad's passing we had an appointment to finalize arrangements with Mark, who was "double booked" with another family for the same time (another sign). Alice took care of us until Mark peeked into the room an hour later. We picked urns and stated inscriptions. Mark gave us the mountain of paperwork. I was prepared to pay then, but Mark never mentioned payment. I guess he figured my grief stricken mom would have nothing better to do than read all of the fine print on her own. The cremation was set for the 14th. Late in the afternoon on the Saturday before the cremation, I received a phone call asking for payment. Since they were about to close, and I wasn't able to drop everything at that exact moment to get there, Mark said Monday would be okay. He never mentioned any complications with the cremation might result. The following Monday, my email and phone were blowing up by 9 am asking for payment. I had planned on going in after work, but Mark was adamant. I got all the parties together to go make payment during the lunch hour, only to find Mark wasn't there (another sign). Someone else hunted for the paperwork and presented it to us without any added explanation. The new bill was about $400 more than the original one was, but we weren't given an explanation. Given the circumstances - it was my dad after all - we paid and were told everything was fine. Later that week, mom called to pick up the ashes and was told my dad hadn't been cremated. Mark had postponed the cremation until the 22nd because he didn't get payment on Saturday. Needless to say, I was LIVID. My dad was being left on ice because someone at the funeral home couldn't do his job to explain everything properly. Dad did get cremated on the 22nd, but Mark never called for us to pick up the ashes. My mom called the following Saturday and was told that they had been there for days. We made arrangements to pick up the ashes within the hour, and still Mark was nowhere to be found (surprise). Alice brought the ashes out (in an urn with an inscription that was not my mom's original one...by then we just wanted the ashes and weren't going to leave them for a "re-do"). Mark finally showed up in the room after everything was handled. Even Alice had words for him about the different inscription. All that was left was for Mark to call the Riverside National Cemetery to set up a time for my dad's military service. He said it would be a 15 minute call, and we'd hear from him in an hour or two. Two days later, and after my mom had to remind Mark to call yet again, the service was set for Feb 24th. The honor guard could not be confirmed until a week before the service (which my mom confirmed directly, not Mark). We didn't hear from Mark or Douglass and Zook again though we were still missing the death certificates. Mom called the funeral home the first week of March to find out about the death certificates (remember dad died on New Years). The person on the phone took the name and looked up the file only to tell us that they had never been filed. Apparently, they just filed everything away and forgot to do the rest of their job. The person assured mom that they would file the paperwork the following Monday and hand deliver the death certificates. They were indeed delivered the following Monday, and no Mark did not deliver them...he sent someone else. Needless to say, steer clear....far away from this place. If you love your loved ones and/or yourself, save yourself the heartache of dealing with people who don't respect others in a time of loss and crisis. read more

We chose Douglass & Zook after our mom passed away. It is close to her house and the hospital where she spent her last hours. I had a difficult time in reaching the person I needed to talk to about her service. I was able to reserve a time in their chapel for our mom's memorial service BEFORE we made all the final arrangements. Big mistake. They have 3 simple plans that offer varying degrees of products and services. We chose the most expensive plan that had a coffin included in the price. We made most of the other plans and then went in to choose the coffin. The display room had three walls of samples. Our salesperson told us that the coffins included in our plan were on the middle wall. The coffins on this wall looked great. We went through a lengthy process in choosing the exact right one. He then showed us the other custom options that were available with this choice. We spent a good deal of time choosing just the right options for our mom. After that, he went in to generate the invoice that we could sign and leave. After a few minutes, the salesman came back and said that he had made a mistake. He had shown us the wrong coffins, and the coffins that were included in our (most expensive) plan, were on another wall. Of course the coffins that were included were nowhere near as nice as the one we had chosen. There were no custom options that we had spent so much time on. He had pulled the bait and switch on us. I called him out on it. I told him that I knew he was lying to us. He just said that if we wanted the nicer coffin, we would have to pay an additional $1,100. To take advantage of anyone like this is wrong. To take advantage of grieving family members is unforgivable. Do not go to Douglass & Zook. They systematically cheated us and I'm sure we're not the only ones. read more

The business of caring for a families loved ones after they have passed away requires people who are sensitive and meticulous. I'm a daddy's girl and lost my dad recently. His services were handled by the Zook Family Mortuary. My family is African American and if you don't know one of the most racially segregated industries is the mortuary business. Black people openly encourage one another to go to black facilities because if fear of mistreatment. There is a local African American mortuary in a nigh boring city, but my family has ALWAYS trusted the Zooks with our family. We regularly get asked why we don't use the African American mortuary in the neighboring city. Here are our reasons the Zooks should be your first choice: 1. The Directors make you feel like they care about your family and they don't make you feel like it's a business. They are genuine caretakers. 2. The facilities are so professional, warm, and spotless. Has that old time Monrovia feel. 3. My daddy was vain at 75 you would think he was still "in the game" and was 35. African Americans use black mortuaries because they assume that a white business would not know how to make us look like we did in life. My father was so handsome and looked like he did in life. I couldn't take my eyes off of him. 4. Meticulously thoughtful...they saved a boutonnière my father wore at his visitation and they gave it to me after the funeral. They did not have to do that they could have just tossed it because I had provided a fresh one for his service the next day. I'm so broken-hearted over my daddy...but Zook took some of the sting away by making me feel that they were caring for him and not just collecting money. Matt Zook....amazingly professional, accommodating, and thoughtful. They own my family's business forever. read more

Unfortunately while I'm sure this is a great place when you are flush with money, when you're from out of town and broke they are not. My father died at Arcadia Methodist and instead of being allowed to have a couple of days to get arrangements made (my father had nothing planned) we were forced by the social worker to choose Douglass and Zook who I believe is one of the most expensive places in the Pasadena area. All we wanted was a basic cremation, no service, no fancy anything.....just cremation and death certificates. $3000 for a basic cremation. I'm sorry.........how much? We paid $1000 for my mothers in Colorado. So when we told Mr. Zook that we could not afford that and how we felt we were duped into choosing them, he then told us that we were more than welcome to choose another place however we would owe $450 for transport and $225 for refrigeration. So now not only do we have to find a place we can afford to have him cremated at, we owe $675 because we were forced to choose Douglass and Zook by the stupid social worker. And yes I will be posting a bad review for them as well. I feel that there must be some deal worked out with Arcadia Methodist and Douglass and Zook because we were completely taken advantage of by both. So make sure you have money before you choose this place because they are very, very expensive. read more
