I had the I love New York roll and I was honestly blown away at the flavor, it was so good. If you go to this place then I would highly recommend that roll. They are a bit pricey though for the portion that they provide. I feel like the roll could have been more packed up with the ingredients for the price that I paid ($20 for just the I love New York roll after taxes). The salmon sashimi was my friends and she too was not happy at the size of the pieces of fish , but she did say that it was good. Came here for a weeknight dinner. I still made a reservation and was glad I did because the space is small. Everything was made fresh to order and tasted great. I got all vegan rolls and loved them. The others tried many fish (cooked and uncooked) rolls and hand rolls and also loved their dishes. The hand rolls though come out as ready, not all at once. They have great sets available for good prices. The staff were friendly and attentive. My only complaint is that they were scorching fish and peppers at the sushi bar and it made my eyes and my partner's sting a lot. Still, definitely a fun sushi spot to check out. read more

Date night out! These hand rolls did not disappoint and the intimate dining experience was definitely very very fun!!! Honestly I did not know what to expect as it was such a last minute reservation of what ever was still open - but we were so pleasantly surprised that I was more than excited and happy to have stopped in here!! Service was amazing, they explained to us all the options that we had at our disposal and we ordered one normal set and my date ordered the huge platter where you prepared and rolled everything yourself. Honestly for just a smidge more in cost, I do believe that one was a much better dish as I feel like I got way more fish....although I'm not sure that when we rolled our own whether we paired everything correctly with the right amount of soy sauce. Douska is probably my second favorite handroll sushi spot in the city for its price point. It doesn't quite beat the price and taste of Kazunori for me, but I find that Douska still a very solid option and conveniently located in the Lower East Side. They have a handful of pre-fixe temaki sets to choose from which save you a few bucks compared to ordering a la carte. If you're really hungry, I think the 6-roll set ($35 for yellowtail, crabmeat, snapper, negi toro, Hokkaido scallop, and shrimp tempura) is filling with enough room for dessert. My favorite rolls here are the salmon and Hokkaido scallop. They have enclosed outdoor seating and indoor seating. I usually come here on weekends for lunch and it hasn't ever been very busy. I don't usually experience issues with getting a table, which can be nice if you just want to show up, get seated, and order immediately. This is a good place to come to when I want to switch things up between my favorite sushi spots. read more

I didn't think twice about it, but the nice gesture got us seated quickly at the bar, which is what we preferred. We ordered some glasses of wine and agedasho tofu to start. Our main was the tenaki platter, which was enough for two people to share. Really enjoyed every piece, although I should have opted for the extra seaweed sheets and rice. You'll run out of them well before you use up all of the sushi. A side of edemamme and then some mochi for dessert, and we were set. All 9 fillings were good and fresh, and the sushi rice was seasoned perfectly. My boyfriend got the Douska hand roll set, which came with 7 different rolls. They serve them to you one by one. The wait for each one is worth it though- if they serve them all at once, the seaweed will get soggy or chewy after a while. My favorites in the set were the wagyu and uni ones. This is a newly opened hand roll sushi restaurant in LES. I'd been wanting to come here for awhile, and finally just made it here on a Wednesday night. I had made a reservation a week or two prior, and it was very easy to make online. The restaurant only has counter seating, and seats to roughly 20 people or just under. Due to this, they only seat complete parties. When my friend arrived, they seated us promptly. From the menu, you can either order a set menu ranging from different numbers of hand roll, starting at three pieces and going up to to as many as six. You can also order a la carte, to make your own set. They also have a small range of dishes which are not hand rolls. I got the Sasa set for $18, which consisted of four hand rolls. My friend got the hand roll set which included six hand rolls. All were excellent, and prepared and served to us quickly. For people with a smaller appetite, four hand rolls is more than enough. For future visits, I would probably order three hand rolls. My friend was content to have six though. The service was friendly and welcoming. They gave us the bill right after they noticed we'd finished our food though, sending the message that this is not a place to eat and linger. Great value for the price, and simple ambience. Having been here 3 times, I would definitely say Douska is a solid sushi spot. The first time I went is with my gf. They give you hand antiseptic wipe to clean your hands before begin your dining experience. Their wagyu hand roll steak doesn't miss, it's actually very very good. Good wine list, good sake list, and ok service -- just ok. I do wish it was a bit more upscale in appearance, because it's not exactly cheap to dine here. Expect to pay $30-$55 when dining along or $60+ with a partner. I usually prefer to sit inside if I want a more intimate setting, but during lunch is the better time to sit out in the patio to people watch while you eat. I'll definitely be making more regular visits to Douska. read more

I had the mizu while she had the umi with a wagyu handroll a la carte. Super affordable and every piece was decent quality and freshness. My favorite pieces were probably the scallop and king salmon. Their wagyu was lacking a little because it was kind of chewy. It definitely was not A5 grade, but what can we expect for the price? Nonetheless, it was still very fatty. Solo dinning has been my new thing!!! Douzo is a new Japanese restaurant that opened down the block from my apartment! I was eager to try it out as I walk by multiple times. I came here solo on a late Wednesday night, purely empty, no wait. I was seated at the counter (no tables at this restaurant, all counter seating). I went with the Sakana nigiri omakase as it was recommended on yelp and it looked super delicious. Cold tofu - came out first and was a unique taste. Flavorful and different. Miso soup - nothing really special about this. They do add shiitake in here which was different. Omakase Yellowtail- this was good, flavorful and tasted high quality. Snapper - delicious as well Toro - very slimy and melted in my mouth, def one of the better pieces Salmon - fatty, but had better Crab meat - a bit dry, my least favorite piece Scallop - not a big scallop fan, but this was def one of the better scallops I have had Ikura - pretty solid although I can't tell the differences with Ikura Yellow tail hand roll - very good, different taste Extra order - Uni Wagyu hand roll ($19) this was slightly disappointing. The wagyu was a bit chewy and meh. However, the uni was very buttery and good. My total bill came out to be $75 after tip. It's not that bad for omakase. The pieces were fresh but I can't say I didn't have better in the past. I'll definitely come back to try out their $35 hand rolls course, esp since they're so close! Overdue review but went to try some hand rolls a couple weeks ago and finally decided to write a review after trying "Domo Domo" tonight. Upon comparison, everything about douzo was better. From the texture of the fish to the flavor to the whole experience in general. The hand rolls at douzo were much better in every way ! I loved the crispy of the seaweed, the abundance of scallions in the yellowtail hand roll and I really liked how the fish was not like minced but rather sliced. I went with a few friends and to this day one of them still can't stop raving about the Hokkaido uni Hand roll. She's already planning to go back in a couple of weeks and wants to get like four of the Hokkaido uni hand rolls alone. We also went at a later time (around 9pm) so we had a chance to chat with the chef, he seemed like a super chill guy and was very friendly! Even though I don't usually go to Chinatown for food, I can't wait to go back! It's lit relatively bright compared to Kazunori (super dim) which I enjoy because I can actually see what I'm putting in my mouth. Woah To keep it short and simple for those scrolling through the reviews, if you want a more traditional taste, go to Kazunori. If you want a bit of a twist, come to Douzo! A hint of tang, a kick of savory, a combination of sweet and umami -- it's all here. On top of their hand rolls, Douzo also has an omakase menu so you big money folk can indulge in something a bit more extravagant if desired. Also the head chef is a super charismatic guy. This update is only for the takeout/delivery. I come here so often and one day I didnt want to sit outdoors so I ordered delivery (less than five minutes away). The seaweed is protected by clear wrapping that is supposed to keep the seaweed crispy but they were not fully on so the middle of each handroll was quite soggy. The handrolls themselves were fine. My boyfriend and I ordered around 15/16 handrolls. The roll i was most excited for was the wagyu uni handroll which we always get. This time however, the wagyu was sliced SUPER thin & overcooked. Along with this, one of the rolls was made so carelessly. There was only a half piece of uni. I guess when I'm paying $20 for one handroll I expect it to be of higher quality & not prepared haphazardly. I've included a photo of the roll. read more

Douzo was my first experience in a restaurant specializing in sushi handrolls. I'm very traditional and like my nigiri omakases. There are a few other famous restaurants in new york which are similar - Sugarfish and KazuNori - which I haven't been to. The restaurant is bar seating only. It wasn't too clear on the website if they needed reservations, but I recommend calling them to make one. I walked in and was lucky there were 2 seats available. The menu is straightforward. You can order a set of Temaki (handrolls) or a set of Gunkan sushi, which are little "boats" made of nori, pressed seaweed, a small amount of sushi rice on the bottom. I opted for their Douzo ($40) set menu which consists of 6 handrolls. Pieces Yellow Tail Crab Meat Snapper Nori Toro Hokkaido Scallop Shrimp Tempura My favorites were the scallop and crab meat rolls. All the seafood was super fresh. The sushi chef hands you one piece at a time like a sushi omakase. Although I thought the handrolls were good, I do prefer nigiri over handrolls. I wasn't too full after the set and would recommend ordering more rolls. I haven't been to the OG handroll spots. so I don't have much to compare this too. The DIY handroll set also looked really pretty, but i'm lazy and did not want to roll my own haha. Douzo was a good break from the normal nigiri omakases I usually get and I would recommend this place if you don't want to wait in the long lines of the other handroll joints. read more

Loved the miso soup.. came with a lot more in it (mushrooms, tofu, maybe something else?) which was great. So fun to have the rolls handed right to you, and the wait staff did a good job of syncing our two orders so we ate at the same time. I came here with my bf when they first opened about year or two ago and it was great. Super fresh and the seaweed was crunchy. We talked to the sushi chef, who was really nice and personable. We liked it a lot so we came again a few months later, but unfortunately the quality decreased (but still decent). Tonight we came here with a few friends (5 of us total) and I called to reserve ahead of time. They said it would be ready in 30 min (at 7:30pm). When we arrived, we had to wait another 30 min and I had to keep asking the host to check and eventually we got seated at 8:30pm. Once we sat down, it took another 20 min for them to give us the menu and water. Fast forward we ordered our food and the first hand roll for each of us did not come until 9:30pm. We saw they were busy as they only had 2 servers and 2 sushi chefs, so we were trying to be understanding of the demand. But each roll took longer and longer to come and we didn't finish until 10:45pm. Total of almost 3 hours for 5-6 rolls per person. Overall they are nice people and the food was on par with when the second time I came, but the attention and service was terrible tonight. I used to recommend this place to a lot of my friends because I had such a pleasant experience the first time, but unfortunately I don't think we (or our friends who tried for the first time tonight) will be returning customers. read more

Came here last Friday. We got the Mizu set with and some rolls a la carte, including the Wagyu. I've never been a fan of handrolls. Douzo converted me. Everything is perfectly seasoned and the fish just melts in your mouth. Loved how you get to sit at a bar and watch the chef make the rolls in front of you, and the restaurant interior combining traditional Japanese elements with modern touches.
