If you're looking for a sushi spot that specializes in hand rolls and is similar to Kazu Nori, Douska is another great option! It's only bar seating, so I'd recommend making a reservation if you don't want to wait long. It seemed like the other parties we ate with also made reservations. It's pretty easy to do online a week or 2 in advance! Service is fast and friendly! I came here solely for the handrolls, but they also have omakase sushi options, which a lot of other customers got. Prices are pretty similar to Kazu Nori, but I believe there are more fish options here My friend and I opted to order a la carte since we didn't like the presets, but were both full with 4 handrolls each. I got the yellowtail, toro, salmon, and albacore. TBH, all the fish in the handrolls were VERY COLD like almost frozen :( my fave was the yellowtail out of the 4. Rice to fish ratio was ok, but the temperature threw me off. Otherwise it was a good meal! We both got the douzo set for 35$ which came with yellowtail, crab meat, snapper, toro, scallop and shrimp tempura. Went around 6pm with a friend I haven't seen in a long time on 9/9. The food was seriously incredible, no complaints there. I recommend the wagyu and uni. Service was okay, they're not attentive and do not time it well in terms of bringing out the hand rolls. At Kazu Nori and others I've tried they won't give you the next one until you finish the one in front of you. She didn't care so they piled up on our table and the seaweed became all soggy. The place was also empty so I don't understand why they'd be trying to rush us if that was the intent. At the end is where the waitress was very unprofessional. When she brought the device out to have us pay, she handed it to me and I thought she said "tap" so I tapped my card at the total and it beeped. But she meant "tip" and then said this machine works different. However the transaction went through and she said the machine doesn't allow you to tip after you beep it. She got so upset and it was so uncomfortable. I was so confused I offered to sign the receipt and leave a tip or go back and add more as I didn't have cash. She made a huge fuss about it and was super demanding. She said we needed to refund the entire transaction and do it over. I would've usually been so willing but the way she was going about it was so unprofessional and uncomfortable, especially for that service so at this point I didn't even want to. But I felt bad so I did go to the cash register to redo it all, and then when I get there she actually says I need to wait. I had an Uber who was already waiting for us on the busy street getting honked at. I've never had an experience like that ever before. It was all just a mess, stressful and awkward. It honestly ruined the experience for us. Imagine going there with a client or first date and that happening. Would not recommend if they don't fix the service, there are a lot of other delicious hand roll places. I would rate it a 2 but like I said, the food was really great. Decided to give Douska a try and it did not disappoint. I ordered their matsu set and California uni and negi toro, seaweed was wrapped individually to keep it crisp. Fish was very fresh. I really enjoyed the H wagyu! The meat was nicely flavored and tasted the best out of all the other 4 that I had ordered. I'm not a big truffle fan but this truffle wasn't too fragrant and strong. I struggle with my reviews during this covid-time and definitely am a bit more relaxed about giving a 5 star rating than normal. I would say Douska sits between a 4 and a 5 but I am rounding up because they were very nice to my party and I can't imagine how difficult it is running a restaurant like this during a pandemic where you cannot seat customers inside. My friend and I showed up at 5:30pm on a Tuesday evening and were seated promptly. We ordered the sashimi and several handrolls. Definitely get the handrolls here as that is what they are known for. Everything was fresh and delicious. My favorite of the handrolls I ordered was the negitoro. I would probably avoid the scallop going forward as I did not expect the spicy sauce that it came in. The price is probably one of the most reasonable of any sushi place I have been to in New York considering the quality. I think this spot will be a place I become a regular visit for me when I am craving more affordable sushi. (If I'm looking for higher-end sushi, I will go to Uogashi in Hells Kitchen.) There are some definite kinks to their outdoor space (it's too open, not as nice as their inside space, and homeless people may pester you) but this is really no fault of their own and something beyond their control so I am not factoring it into my review. read more

I really wanted to like Douska more. I was very curious about this place after walking past it several times, and finally made a trip. I say the good is that it's highly accessible and somewhat affordable sushi. Their handrolls are pretty good, though not amazing. I was less fond of the temaki. The service that day was borderline atrocious. Our server just completely forgot about us and pretty much abandoned us. The sushi chef though made sure we got water and our wasabi, ginger, and soy sauce, which the waiter completely forgot to give. It was quite busy that day, so chefs were hustling making rolls for not only the counter but the tables too. It seemed that execution of their sushi rolls were suffering because of how busy it was. We ordered the Douzo hand roll set, which includes 6 handrolls (Yellowtail, crab meat, snapper, negi toro, hokkaido scallop, shrimp tempura). I subbed the crab meat for ikura. Instead of getting a handroll though for ikura, they served a temaki for some reason, which was fine. They also almost served us the wrong handroll at one point, so make sure to pay attention to the rolls they serve you. As for flavor, I thought it was overall pretty good. Execution, not so much. I thought execution was okay, and their seaweed could be a little crispier to be honest. Handrolls are a decent size, you get maybe three bites at most from each. I enjoyed the scallop the most and the shrimp tempura the least. The shrimp tempura was very thickly battered, and not quite the light and airy tempura I had in mind. Watching the chefs, I felt less enticed to order any handcut rolls. I think your best bet here are the handrolls, at least based on observing this experience. All in all, an a-okay experience. I felt service could use some work, as our waiter never checked on us once. Food was good, not amazing. It's not a strong recommend from my viewpoint. read more

Douska was everything I'd imagined it to be. That crispy seaweed with the warm rice and cold fish hitting my mouth and tastes buds was so divine. It's funny because I am near the KazuNori in Nomad and didn't want to wait in line like some basic tourist to get a seat at their table. Being Yelp Elite, I quickly searched to find Douska - a trainride via the D and I end up on the LES to go to Douska. I love the selection on the menu, in addition to the handrolls, there is ceviche, sashimi, and other japanese selections. I was sooooo lucky to get a table inside (I went when it was humid AF) and was prompted seated. I put in my order and had to wait a while because each roll is given to you in sequential order with the set you chose. Perfect handrolls here! Went for lunch at noon on a Saturday and it was such a great experience despite it being outdoors. My husband got the douzo and I picked the matsu. We were nervous they would serve the handrolls all at once which would make the seaweed soggy but they actually served us each roll one at a time which was perfect. The sushi tasted fresh and went well with the combo ingredients like scallions/shiso leaves. They have a great selection of sakes they you can order by the glass so we enjoyed trying different sakes with our rolls. We also ordered the yellowtail crudo and salmon crudo. Both were great. The salmon crudo reminded us of Peruvian crudo and had a great acidity. The yellowtail crudo sauce was so delicious and went well with the fish. It's a story. I dont like leaving a bad review as I understand how it may affect a business. But I could say I had one of the most appalling service and a traumatizing experience. We had the Instagram famous, DIY plate to make your own rolls. Very cute. Problem began when a homeless person entered the restaurant, started begging for money. The servers didn't think it was bothersome enough to immediately send him out before he went thru a roaster of diners at the restaurant. (There was about 20 people dinining) The homeless stopped at our table on his way out, to which we respectfully declined as we had no cash. Then, he spat over our table. HE SPAT OVER OUR TABLE. My friend who was sitting the closest to this action had it on the back of her body and our food. We immediately tried cleaning after the mess while my friend was trying to hold it together and not panic. I pulled out my sanitizing wipes to clean. The restaurant workers seemed unfazed and almost indifferent to what just occurred. They only came up to offer a piece of napkin and a seemingly generic "sorry" only after we went thru my entire pack of wipes. I'm not blaming them for what happened. But they certainly didn't show any care about how their customers just got assaulted. We obviously didn't finish our half eaten food because it was spat on and just wanted to leave the vicinity immediately. The server came up to us with a bill with the sodas comped as their "sorry, you got spat on at our restaurant". Which is nice if there was no homeless spitting involved. I didnt think it was fair for us to pay $45+tax+tip/ perspn for the food that we physically could not finish (there was more than half unfinished and COVID?!) I wasn't asking nor expecting the whole bill to be comped. It just seemed that they were giving us this "sorry you got spat on and couldn't finish your food. Here's free soda. Please pay for the rest of the food that was spat on" vibe. Which to me makes no sense in the grand NYC restaurant life. I asked the server/manager to comp at least for my friend's food who was directly and visibly spat on, therefore couldn't finish her meal. They argued, saying that it wasn't their fault. I said I understand. But it is part of their responsibility to make sure their diners feel safe and actually enjoy the food in a sanitary space that we pay for. None of these criterias were met. The server/manager then abrasively took the bill away, took my friend's $45 charge off, then added back the sodas. She came back to put up another rude argument that it's not fair? WE GOT SPAT ON at their restaurant. I didn't leave a single tip. I am usually a 20-25% tipper (average tipping in NYC) as I've worked at a restaurant before and understand the agony. The server/ manager's handling of this incident was not only irresponsible but just plainly disgusting. Why would I leave a tip after all these unnecessary attitude? They put up another argument for the tipping. Till the last sec, the manager gave us massive attitude. We left our contact information to speak with the owner offering to pay for the missing tip if they really think that they deserved it. But still have not been contacted. read more

I got the mid-priced option and was very satisfied with the 5 hand rolls I had. Fish was fresh and rice was prepared to perfection. I will definitely be back here. Very cute place. Sleek aesthetics but colorful. The inside space is small but extremely clean, including the bathroom, which even has the typical Japanese toilets with the butt flush lol.
