Lisa H, our "adopted" Denver parents, and I met up at Dozens for brunch before the USA Pro Cycling Challenge this past weekend. I had heard of Dozens, but didn't know much about it. So it was great to go into a new breakfast joint without any expectations. I must've driven past this places more times than I can count, but never really noticed it. Dozens is located in an old renovated house on 13th and Cherokee; big windows, beautiful wood floors, and vaulted ceilings. Our sever was top notch: you could tell she enjoyed her job. She checked in with us as we perused the menu without being pushy. We probably took longer than necessary to decide (the menu is quite small, which is always welcomed), but everything looked so tempting. I ended up choosing the Loveland: a ham and cheese scrambled egg creation loaded with green peppers and onions; a side of chunky hash browns; a tasty English muffin with apple butter; and a slice a cantaloupe. Wow this was a great breakfast option! I was really pleased with how delicious everything was, especially that apple butter. Yum-o! I must've been hungry or craving some serious protein because my plate was clean shortly after it was set on the table. Dozens was a pleasant suprise for my last day in Denver. The extra special bonus was catching the marathon and seeing the runners reach the finish line. Everything here is fresh and simply delicious. Their omelletes are named after different towns in Colorado. Best of all, they have a large selection of vegetarian dishes. They offer scramblers, oatmeal, muffins, biscuits and gravy, french toast, stuffed french toast, fruit, coffee, juice, and tea. All your basic breakfast staples but everything is just so good and FRESH. I had the Veggy Benny. It's basically eggs benedict with tomatoes, avocado, and mushrooms served over a flaky buttery crust. First time back in about a year - and not surprised to see that nothing has changed, but what used to be a cute country theme is now starting to feel dated and 'behind the times'. I asked for a gluten free alternative to the toast, english muffin, baked muffins & scones - there isn't any. The menu has not changed - NEVER changed. I just moved here from Boston and the only way I feel settled in a new place is to find a breakfast place...I can now say that I feel settled in Denver. A breakfast restaurant can't just serve good food, it has to have the right morning ambiance, and Dozens does. It was obvious to me that it was well loved when on my first visit, the owner knew about every other person who came through the door. It's also in an old house-like setting and ranged in clientel from men in business suits to families. My only critique is the menu's variety. While I am gluten-intolerant so I love the plethora of omelet options, my fiance is always looking for a good stack of pancakes and there aren't a lot of options for the basic breakfast. The menu does, on the other hand, offer your own french press coffee...which, is genius. I'm stoked to have found Dozens and will likely be a regular for a while. read more

Went to the Denver Mint to try and take the tour and it was sold out went to the gift shop and the nice lady at the counter recommended Dozens as a great place for breakfast, what a delight it was great food great service and price. Highly recommend!! Perfect eggs, great Applebutter. read more

When I moved to Denver, I of course had many things I had to get done. Job, apartment, you know the drill. Very quickly, I needed to find a local place with a nice solid 'merican type breakfast. Check. At Dozens I'm generally seated at the same table with the same server; I like to think this is on purpose. She knows that whoever I'm with, we will be having a french press of Novo coffee. She might even assume that we'll also be having fresh squeezed greyhounds (there's something about breakfast where I enjoy having many glasses in front of me). She helps me decide between the two items I'm eyeballing so I don't have to make that choice while I'm as hungover as I usually am. Man, if I sent out Christmas cards, she'd get one. My food is always good cuz I'm there for three things: meat, starch, and fruit. I have the luxury of not liking eggs and therefore not caring how they're cooked. Oatmeal, french toast, bacon, biscuits and gravy... and fruit. The decor gives me the distinct feeling that if one was to try and serve dinner there, the plates of food would all burst into flame. It's breakfast time. Lots of yellow, lots of plants, probably not the most comfortable chairs in the world. You know, a breakfast place, one in an old house. After searching for countess restaurants for lunch in downtown Denver, my friends and I were ecstatic to hear that Dozens which was nearby was open for brunch and desperate because we were running out of legit restaurants in the area. Apparently a lot of restaurants are closed on Mondays! (why?) Drinks: French press, honey flavor - Im not a coffee drinker but had to try this and suggest coffee lovers to get the honey flavor. It was rich and tasty. Hot chocolate is to die for, it's delicious especially after walking around in the cold for restaurants all morning! We were seated quickly within 3 minutes but I must note that waiter service was very slow. We found the names on the entree items to be quite entertaining and humorous as we waited to order. All entrees were served with a oatmeal raisin cookie which was fairly decent: French toast formidable with strawberries & bananas - Not very impressed with the quality and taste of this entree. I didn't even taste the richness of the cream cheese or preservatives. As a matter of fact, I didnt taste anything except the syrup and bread :( Eggs arnold - my friend ordered the bay shrimp on the side which was probably a good idea. It just doesnt seem right to have bay shrimp tossed in the hollandaise sauce and eggs. But the dish itself was delicious! It came in a fluffy shell and potatoes. How the west was won - can you say a heart attack waiting to happen or food coma syndrome? Well personally I thought the biscuits were a bit dry but my friends enjoyed savoring this dish. It had sausage, gravy and biscuits. Telluride - This was my favorite even though it wasn't my own. It had mushrooms, eggs, chopped chicken breast in hollandaise sauce served with a potatoes, english muffin and apple butter. The apple butter tasted like regular jam, I wasn't too big of a fan. Went to brunch here on a Sunday right around prime brunching time. It was uncrowded and we were seated immediately. I tried the Eggs Arnold and I was very happy I got the shrimp on the side. Tiny, frozen things with an overwhelming fishy flavor. The ham, eggs, puff pastry, and insipid hollandaise were ok, but the puff pastry got soggy fast. The main part of my meal didn't arrive hot, though my side of potatoes was steaming. The potatoes that came with the meal were also very underseasoned, so I tried to put them in the hollandaise. It just made everything blander. I was completely bored with what I was eating. Great as a diet strategy, not so good when you're at a restaurant. My friends got the Steamboat (bacon & cheese on scrambled eggs with an English muffin, and potatoes) and the Belgian waffle, covered in strawberries and bananas with a side of eggs. The Steamboat was nothing you can't make at home in a few minutes. In fact, my scrambled eggs are a better consistency, as these were a little dry around the edges. However, the Belgian waffle was magnificent and covered in what looked like very fresh fruit. Every breakfast also came with a slice of pineapple, which was a nice touch. I should have read the other reviews, even some of the 5 star reviews basically still say, "Eh, it's good enough if you're really hungry" in the comments and that's exactly how I feel. I think their strengths may be baked goods and carbs and not what I ordered. Overall, it's nice to know about in a pinch if I'm hungover and need food prepped by someone else *right now.* If I have even a little hunger wiggle-room though, I'm going to head somewhere better. read more

Very nice little diner that serves breakfast, brunch and lunch. Sis and I found it very reasonably priced for eggs and potatoes, and the hash browns were just like I liked them, brown and crusty. The waitress was quick to get us served, and it was no problem getting some good salsa to top my eggs. read more

I love DOZENS. The cinammon rolls are SO DELICIOUS and they don't even have gobs of icing. And don't get me wrong...I'm not afraid of icing. First time here for breakfast, brought along by my adventurous friends who are trying to hit every b-fast place in Denver. Got the French press coffee, decaf, and it was just ok. I prefer glass French presses to the metal ones at Dozens so I can judge the brew accordingly, plus I could taste some residual metal in my brew. The use Novo beans, which I like, so that's a plus. I wanted something very light for eats, so opted for the Aspen scrambler, sub sliced tomatoes for potatoes. It was good, kinda bland; I expected a little better. The highlight was the English muffin with apple butter. Ambiance was fine, not too loud and a little more cozy than your typical diner. That is all I have to say about that. One more thing... I just read the comments the owner made to some of our fellow Yelpers... holy inappropriate, Batman. Makes me want to drop a star off my review. This place had a really good breakfast dish called the steamboat. It was eggs and bacon in a chafing dish. I also really liked their hot chocolate, it looked more like a Ice Cream sundae. Not the top of the heap for Denver brunch, but no where near the bottom either.Good food for a reasonable price. Location is a great starting point for a lazy day at the library or the DAM. That being said, parking can be tough so bring your change for nearby meters where a quarter will take you farther than it does a few blocks closer to 16th Street. I always find myself wishing that A) they had an actual waiting area/entryway as entrances and exits are always awkward and that B) the restrooms were larger and cleaner. I've been here twice and it's my new favorite place for a relaxing, casual breakfast. They know how to cook eggs PERFECTLY and I especially recommend the Steamboat: scrambled eggs, sour cream, green onions, and bacon, with plenty of potatoes on the side. Both times I went were on a weekend; it was bustling but we were able to be seated immediately (probably because there were only two of us.) Really recommend it, although I do wish they served chai! Dozens falls into a "hidden gem" category for me-- it's not on any sort of main street, the building is very unassuming, but it's one of the best breakfast spots in Denver. The corny puns on the menu are charming, the food is prepared quick, but very well, and they have some of the best coffee around (from what I've heard-- I don't partake). It's inexpensive, and you get a lot for your money. The waitstaff is very friendly and accommodating-- almost as if you're having breakfast at a friend's place. But you pay your friend at the end. They also have some fresh baked goods, if you're not overstuffed by the end of your breakfast. I love Dozens, and I'll be back again, and again. read more

Dozens was a great experience, I wasn't going to give it a five star rating only because it lacked a little sparkle, maybe i felt cramped at first waiting for a table, but once the 20 minutes were over and we got seated, all the food and coffee was surely five star deliciousness. I liked this place alot...good but not phenomenal breakfast at a good but not great price point...I would stop in every now and then to chat with the hotty brunette waitress there...but... Unfortunately I stopped in just today and saw that they had one table left on their outdoor patio as I was walking up to the front door. I walk in and very cordially mention to the front cashier ..a blonde with glasses. that there is one seat left on the patio can you sit me there? She actually would not seat me there.... There is no one else in the place at 9:40a well after any breakfast rush. ..maybe 2 tables inside...everyone is outside. She says 'just you'? I confirmed yes. She says 'well I hate to give you a four top, how "bout a window seat?' I said 'really? That makes me not want to give business to your restaurant' She still wouldn't seat me there...She was taken aback ... I said 'I"m not going to patronize your shop anymore...' And I left. F. That. I could see if the place was packed, but an empty place and a group of more than one is going to get the patio seat over me? Um...Yeah....NO. This was our first visit to Dozens and we will certainly return again and again. The building itself is an old house and I had the feeling of sitting in a friend's dining room. Our waitress was very nice and offered coffee before my cup was ever empty. My husband had Imagine a Great Omelet which is a Denver Omelet. I had the Blue Bonnet Sonnet which is an omelet made with generous amounts of green chili, tomatoes, and cheddar which is served with mild salsa, potatoes, English muffin with apple butter, and a piece of seasonal fruit (mine was pineapple). The coffee and cream were hot and fresh. This is hands down our new favorite breakfast place. read more

Dozens certainly can be hectic if you get there during the breakfast or brunch rush. But, if you can get there a little later during the weekdays, or don't mind waiting for awhile on the weekends, this place is great. One of my favorite brunch spots, you can get a fresh-squeezed OJ mimosa along with some very inspired omelets and egg dishes. The potatoes served on the side are flavorful and don't have that grease flavor that diner hash browns seem to usually have. The baked goods are really delicious. read more

I had breakfast here a couple of months ago and thought the place was pretty good. The restaurant is located in a converted old house and is very cute inside. I came in mid-week around 8:30 or so and there were plenty of open tables - i.e. no wait. After perusing the menu, I decided on the 'Anothernotanomelet', which is a bed of potatoes topped with vegetables like mushrooms, bell peppers, onions and tomatoes and topped with cheese and two eggs cooked how you like them (I like them over easy). The dish comes with an English muffin, apple butter, and (I think) a little fresh fruit. It was a nice looking dish, but it turned out to be a little bland. I asked for some salsa and that helped out quite a bit. The apple butter that came with the English muffin was a very nice touch. Service was friendly and efficient. This place is a little out of the way for me, but I'd be inclined to eat here again. read more

I don't like writing reviews until I've been to a place several times over years. This is a place my family has visited for three generations, I first went here with my high school sweetheart and grandmother. Grandma was hard to please. Everything had to be spotless (no dirty silverware!), the staff had to be nice, and the food had to be perfect. The food was always hot and I never remember her being unhappy here. Mom is a foodie and she probably reviewed it herself. I love the coffee, it's a special roast only served there by novo coffee. The omlette was cooked just right and was reasonably priced. It included enough food for two people with big appetites. Everything was the right temperature, right texture, and right ingredients. The environment is cozy, upscale, and pleasant. The server was personable and pleasant as usual. The cashier even remembered my uncle and had nice things to say about him with a genuine smile. He even listened patiently to my story and set appropriate boundaries to help other customers before I told it. I cannot imagine a more perfect breakfast place, it deserves 5 stars, but I reserve it for rare occassions. I'm impressed with the consistency over a decade. It's a breakfast place. Nice atmosphere although it got pretty loud. No....it got REALLY loud actually. Maybe it was the table next to us raging a 4 person bullhorn conversation. Not quite sure. The food was decent, but they drown their dishes in hollandaise sauce which rather put both my girlfriend and I 'off'. And the coffee was weak. Although....I would go back to try other things. I've eaten here before and while I remember it being good, it isn't anything that you can't get elsewhere without the wait or the crowds. Dozens benefits from being located near the Denver justice center and jail so most of their business is foot traffic from here. That being said they also seem to think they can be poorly staffed because of this fact. They're making money anyways. read more

One of the most laid back, quiet, good energy restaurants I've ever eaten at. Their service was fast, their food was absolutely excellent. Such good quality food for such a low price. You can tell how much time and pride they take in making every dish. I had the steam boat, and I'm not a fan of home fries, but these were absolutely crunchy and had such good flavor. It has a cozy home style feel and makes me feel like I'm just chowing down on grandma's (okay, not MY grandma per se, but the proverbial grandma's) cooking. Yes, it's not terribly healthy...I think "hearty" is the right world... although they do offer a few lighter options. I LOVE getting the French Press here...mmm and make sure to try whatever the muffin of the day is. As the name implies it is very much focused on the eggy side of breakfast. I was pleasantly surprised by Dozens. I work at a competing breakfast spot in town, and I eat at a lot of breakfast joints. I ordered an omelet, which i was hesitant to do because often times they come out being WAY too much egg. This omelet was a perfect amount of egg wrapped around the other ingredients. The potatoes were great; a little bit of onion, well browned, not overly seasoned. And the apple butter, as others have mentioned, was perfect on the english muffin. I also got a side order of biscuit and gravy, which was also great. Too many spots in Denver try to be creative with gravy, and rarely succeed. Leave it be. Fat, flour, milk, salt, pepper, sausage, perfect. I'd even take package gravy over some of the ridiculous stuff places are serving. This is not a fancy, trendy, pushing-culinary-limits place, so if you're looking for that, look elsewhere. But if you want a quality, downhome breakfast, come here. We ordered what I mentioned above plus two coffees, a small orange juice and a BLT add avocado and our bill was $25. Perfect. And the service was friendly and attentive. read more

The disabled access to this restaurant is terrible. I had lunch today with a disabled friend who's in a motorized scooter and it was near impossible to get inside. The restaurant claims, legitimately so, that they are a historic building and thus are only required to meet ADA where "feasible". But the real problems were that someone ( the manager or an employee I believe) was parked in the handicapped spot blocking the ramp. The manager offered to move the car "as soon as he could get to it" which he didn't. We actually had to wait for the customer in the next spot over to move to get to the ramp. Then, the back door opens open the wrong direction so as to block the entrance. My friend had to turn around several times with me holding the door to get in. The food ranged between good to outstanding, with abundant portions. But the lack of concern the management shows for its disabled customers left a bad taste in my mouth. read more
