It's not often I come to bars inside the downtown part of Los Angeles, but today I did. Dublin's has always been on my go to and it's conveniently close to the metro station. While killing time, I came here on Sunday afternoon to have a lunch. I had their Dub's burger with bacon, lettuce, tomato, pickles, and cheese. The whole lot was very good, very juicy. The basket of fries was a nice crispy side dish. Sunday is an all happy hour special , so I'm enjoying it very much. It's got a lot of age and plenty of seating all over. I'll definitely come back. I can only imagine how nuts it is here on 3/17. One other thing you might notice, their TVs are dated. So much so that you can see stats from a game televised from three years ago on the screens. As others have recently pointed out, service is extremely slowly for no apparent reason. I love a good dive and this place has the hallmarks of what a good dive should be: casual atmosphere, games, bar food, televisions. I walked in with three friends during happy hour on a Tuesday. Three of us ordered a single drink and one of us ordered two. It took the bartender 20 minutes to pour four beers and a shot. The place was practically empty and the few patrons before us at the bar had apparently already been served. The bartender was nice and seemed cool but inexplicably and unbearably slow. We quickly finished our drinks and went to another bar down the street to finish our rounds and eat. The bartender was fine when we first showed up, wearing sunglasses inside- which weird..... but whatever. We ordered our drinks and food, he ignored us for a good period of time while he flirted and drank behind the bar with some beautiful ladies sitting at the bar. I don't care- get your flirt on, but not at the expense of other patrons. Got our order wrong multiple times, when we politely corrected him, he left the bar while on his phone. The kitchen staff/food runner is the real winner of this show. Food was fine, nothing out of this world. Regular bar food. We were hungry. But the service? Could have easily hopped behind the bar and served myself, could have even left without being noticed or paying if I was that kind of person. I'm not. He left the bar unattended to walk out "to go" food- conveniently when the girls he was flirting left outside. Came back inside only to close his reports- but didn't acknowledge us. The next bartender that came in, didn't even greet us after shift change but immediately started playing the golf video game after clocking in. He did come over to check on us, and was nice. But still very lack luster. Then he left again to play another game of virtual golf. Cashed out a group- then returned to play virtual golf. We had to ask the food runner to grab the bartender to grab our check. When we told the bartender about our experience, he really acted like we were inconveniencing him. He did take off our alcohol from the tab (which wasn't a lot- we had 2 drinks for each person (2) during happy hour). Better than nothing, but the apathy really was the icing on the top of the cake The owners/management should be aware. We're more understanding of the bar environment than what we assume the average person would tolerate, given that the person I was with works in a bar. I'm on a quest to find LA's best fish & chips. Of all the places I've tried, this place has the best chips--traditional English thick cut, but with the LA twist (sprinkling of chili powder, which mixes well with lime & tartar sauce). As for the fish, that was sub-optimal, with batter lacking crunch. But the underlying fish meat made up for it--soft and flaky. Right now, the best fish is from England fish & chips in Long Beach. I like this place. It's a great neighborhood dive. If you're from out of the area, don't be scared and just go in there. It's actually it's actually pretty nice for what it is. This is a no nonsense place to grab beer and some bar food. Morgan the bartender is great. Note that the bathrooms are are in the basement and this is not a fru-fru fancy place. I came here today on St. Patrick's Day during my lunch break, really looking forward to getting into the spirit and having the shepherd's pie. My ideal would've been either to order from them on Uber Eats or place the order over the phone, but they have neither option and the phone number on their website doesn't work. I figured a short field trip might be fun so I took the train over from Civic Center and ordered in person. I was hoping to be able to eat there, but realized I could always take it to go if it got late. After ordering, I waited for a while, which I understood because it's St. Patrick's Day, so of course it was going to be busy. While I was waiting, I started planning my return trip on the app and realized I didn't have as much time as I thought. Once I factored in the train ride back, it became clear I wouldn't be able to stay much longer and would most likely not even be able to take it to go. It was honestly disappointing because I had been looking forward to it, but I accepted it and politely asked if I could cancel my order. To be clear, I don't think the wait itself was unreasonable, and I don't think I was wrong for needing to leave. Sometimes timing just doesn't work out. Such things happen in the human condition, you accept it and you move on. What made the experience negative was the male bartender's reaction, who happened to be the closest person around when it was time to ask for the cancellation. He responded with a noticeably rude tone that "it's only been 20 minutes" as if I was being unreasonable, even though I wasn't complaining. I was just trying to leave respectfully and get my money back. He processed the cancellation though he was not happy. I asked for a receipt and he told me in an annoyed tone, "we don't give receipts, there's no receipt, but it's cancelled." That response was both confusing and concerning. When I asked the other bartender for help, the younger female, she was also dismissive and unwilling to assist. At that point, it stopped feeling like a simple timing issue and more like I was being treated as a problem for no reason. The interaction left me unclear on what the expectation was. Was I supposed to leave and let them keep the money for food I no longer have the time to wait for? I understand working in a bar can be stressful, especially on a busy holiday, but if this situation was enough to warrant that kind of reaction, I can only imagine what a reaction to a genuinely difficult customer looks like. read more

I don't live in DTLA, so never down here for the nightlife, but occasionally we'll stop by during lunch for a pint (or 3) and a bite. It's a much more enjoyable lunch with their atmosphere than any rushed lunch in a lame environment. When Boyfriend and I were long-distance, we would talk about where we wanted to live. We wanted some place where you could walk to cool places. I always included "an Irish pub where we play trivia on Tuesday nights." Guess what we found? We're loving Dublin's. This is our second Tuesday. We had lots of fun last Tuesday. Even though we didn't do so well in trivia. Our waitress is super friendly and attentive. Trivia did start late our second visit. It's supposed to start at 9:30. At 9:33, the trivia comes strolling in and took his time setting up, just sort of meandering around. Trivia didn't start until 9:57. And he says, "We're starting late but that's okay." No. No, it's not. I have had the street dog and a cheeseburger. Both were decent. Nothing special but solid. They have a good selection of drinks. Again, not special but solid. Boyfriend liked the pineapple cider. The fries could use more salt. Boyfriend has had the chicken sandwich and quesadilla. He says they were very good, despite the quesadilla being very thin. Dublin's is an Irish sports bar conveniently located by 7th/metro. It's definitely a bit older and run down but with lots of seating for happy hours. The well drinks are $10 and what you would expect from a well drink. There's a pretty large beer selection and a few cocktails to choose from too. The food is standard bar food at average bar prices. The french fries were a good snack for the table but the nachos were a bit disappointing. The bathrooms were not very well kept and all the locks on the stalls were broken so beware of that. We're a British/Irish/Scottish couple, and happily working in the US. Though like everyone who is far from their own home, we miss some of the comfort food, especially around the holidays. Since it was Christmas Eve and not with family, we thought we'd find a British or Irish pub that sold proper bangers and mash. A dish we have both grown up with, which brings back happy memories. A dish I have cooked and served in 500 year old pubs back home. Bangers are simply English sausages. Which are very difficult to find in the US. In fact, I've never found one. The ingredients are pork, rusk and salt. That's it. No chemicals, no Italian herbs, no cheese, no beef, no plastic. Just juicy, juicy pork. Irish sausages are the same, just a slightly finer minced pork. I prefer them. English and Irish sausages come raw, and they are gently griddled until a light golden color to ensure their delicious light and tender texture. They are served with fresh buttered mash, real onion gravy, and very occasionally some wilted spinach or peas. A knife should be able to slice through a banger easily. We were VERY excited to order the "traditional Irish bangers and mash" from this supposedly Irish place's menu. The fact that nobody there was Irish didn't ring alarm bells. We aren't prejudiced. There is nothing like a good plate of bangers and mash. What we got was definitely nothing like a good plate of bangers and mash. In fact it categorically was not a plate of bangers and mash. It was almost as if someone had fed in a description of bangers and mash into a malfunctioning computer, which then spat out this hilarious glop. From our amusingly furious kitchen professional, we received a bizarre plate of oily sweetcorn (with mysterious black crunchy lumps), a small dollop of stuff that we assumed was instant mash, and three dry, rock-hard, deep fried sticks of dark brown matter. Which we assumed to be some sort of pre-cooked preserved beef and gristle snack links. The nearest comparable food item was Turkish succuk. Or jerky. Though those are usually nice to eat. The angry kitchen man flung flimsy plastic forks at us for us to try and cut these things with. It was like trying to cut through a car tyre with a flaccid penis. We opted to use our hands to grasp them, and tore off some of the matter with our teeth. "Tender" and "juicy" are about the most inappropriate adverbs for these rubbery, yet crunchy, thoroughly unpleasant tubes of mysterious dark brown matter speckled with hard white lumps of gristle. Imagine extra wide Slim Jim's, encased in a thick leathery condom, and dropped in the frier for fifteen minutes. That's what they were passing off as "traditional Irish bangers and mash". We could tell that they got reheated in the deep fat frier as their main taste was sort of fishy off beef. What I imagine a long-dead seagull tastes like. I didn't mention that I am very allergic to sodium nitrite to the staff, because the menu specifically said that these were traditional Irish bangers. Back home we would have complained and got our money back, in fact there are very old laws about passing off one thing as another in the UK and Ireland, but we understand that serving staff are paid poorly here and live on tips, so we weren't going to be mean about it. We had a bite, spat into our napkins, paid and left. Stopping at a pharmacy on the way to deal with the sodium nitrite I'd ingested. It could have ruined our day, but since we are such fans of Ramsey's Kitchen Nightmares, and I do (if I may say so myself) an excellent impersonation of the man, we spent the rest of the day laughing at how utterly disgusting it was. With me gesturing like like Gordon and shouting "WHERE'S YOUR PASSION, UH? IT'S ROTTEN!" at the imaginary angry and drunk kitchen staff. If you like good food, stay away, if you want to try the most novel, bizarrely appalling "food" we've had in four years in America, please give these people your money. Before the city shuts them down. Or the kitchen's cockroaches take over. On a positive note, they had a large inflatable teddy bear. And they served our flat warm cokes in plastic cups rather than glasses. So we felt like we were young children again. Which was immersive. In a way. read more

Having been a server across the street for about 10 years several years ago, this rubbed me the wrong way since I would've tipped 25% even though our bartender forgot to order my Nacho's with chicken, and gave us a Bulleit Rocks instead of Bulleit neat... Maybe she knew that they gave shitty service and needed that automatic 18%? My friends wanted to stick true to the theme of Irish drinks and food for St. Patrick's day weekend. We stopped by this pub and were immediately greeted with all things green on the inside. There were streamers of green, shamrocks, guests wearing beads, hats and t-shirts in true St. Paddy's day form. Our group of 6 were immediately sat at a high table in the rear of the pub, which was nice to be away so we were able to talk and hear each other. Our waitress was nice, she was attentive and grabbed everyone's beers right away. My only slight complaint was the food. I opted for the shepherd's pie, it was just okay. I felt like it was far too much money ($13) for what I got. I probably would have had less of an issue had it come with a side salad or something. Nevertheless, even though I was disappointed with my plate, I had a couple bites of my friends kale caesar salad, it was delicious. A few months ago I found this place a block away from the Sheraton where we stayed for my birthday, and coming to Dublin's was the type of vibe I was looking for. I've been to several Irish Pub's and this place doesn't disappoint. As soon as we walked in the atmosphere was upbeat, bustling, and loud. The bartender welcoming and once we got seated it didn't take too long for our server to engage us. She was friendly and attentive during our experience as well. We ordered "Dublin's Nachos" it's topped with beef, melted cheese, jalapeños, tomatoes, sour cream and salsa on the side. The portions was good for three people. The nachos tasted okay, it was probably not the best we had, but we had a great time here it was easily overlooked. With the drinks to go along with the munchies the round of "Irish Car Bombs" was the icing on the cake.
