Sat at the bar for lunch, and was wedged between a whole slew of patrons that obviously frequent this place, knowing each other's names as well as the staff. We really enjoyed our experience at the Dug Out. Dive bars are one of our favorites and Dug Out didn't disappoint. We walked in the door under the exterior sign and told to seat ourselves! There's basically 3 sections to the bar. The older bar area, middle dining area and the new modern bar area. You enter the older bar area which has a few tall-top tables across from the bar and T.V.'s are located throughout the 3 areas. The dining area is in the next area/room with lower lighting, lots of history on the walls and a decent amount of 4-top tables close together. Two dart bars, jukebox and games are in this area. The new spacious room on the other side of the dining area has a bar, is bright and modern with regular and tall-top tables and has a stage. There is an entrance there as well. Patio seating is just outside this door. The patio is large and a great spot to dine or have drinks. The handicap ramp runs parallel to the patio and the parking lot is just outside this door with access through double doors to the new bar and dining area. This is the entrance you'll want to take if you have mobility issues. Menus are on the tables. The menu has a great selection of bar appetizers you'd expect with nachos, wings, tenders, skins, chili-cheese fries and more. There's Salads, Soups (chili & soup of the day), Wraps, Pizza and Sandwiches (grilled cheese, fried bologna, pulled pork, tenderloin, burger and Cuban). Saturday and Sunday a breakfast buffet is served from 9 -11 for only $7.50. My husband ordered the tender and juicy grilled tenderloin with L,T, P with fries ($1 upcharge). All sandwiches are served with Ruffles. The fries were worth the $1 upcharge with a slightly crisp exterior and soft potato interior. I ordered the Half-Pound Pulled Pork Sandwich in the Green Egg served with pickles and onions and Johnton BBQ sauce. I had onion rings (upcharge of $2.50). The generous amount of pork was tender, the BBQ sauce good and the onions rings were not overcooked. We both enjoyed our dinner and we'd order again. Erin, our server, was attentive and friendly during this loud and fun after Colts game crowd. She even cleared the tables as plates and cups emptied. OK, but where ARE we??? That's the question I asked my friends over and over again, after finding myself in the Dugout Bar. I've been a resident of Indy for my entire life, and have been frequenting the Fountain Square/Virginia Avenue area for about five years, and have somehow managed to completely overlook the Dugout. The bar definitely feels like the place that you see in movies, where "everybody knows your name". Every time someone walked in the door, I was waiting for someone else to shout "Norm!". The guests at the Dugout were are friendly and welcoming, and the wait staff was accommodating and helpful. I didn't get to sample a lot of the menu, but I can say for certain that the chicken fingers and fries are a good bet. The drinks are cheap and the cover is free. It's not a fancy place, but I think that's a part of it's charm. Also, there's an upstairs space available for rent, if you have a large group you'd like to accommodate. I wouldn't call the Dugout Bar a home run, but it's a solid base-hit in my book. read more

We've walked by here so many times and have remarked that we need to check this place out. Well, thanks to an unseasonably warm December evening, we did. We were actually headed to Tappers to nerd out to some old school video games, but when we got out of the car, we heard live music down the street. Naturally, we let our ears lead the way to track down the band. When we got to the Dugout, I was thinking to myself that the patio area seemed newish. Now that I've read other people's reviews, I know that's true. The patio is a pretty large triangle shape that runs the length along the sidewalk on Virginia Avenue to College Avenue, right next to the Cultural Trail. The band was playing in the grassy area and they sounded wonderful. They commanded quite a crowd and everyone was happy and ordering food and beers. There didn't seem to be more than a couple of wait staff on hand for everyone out there, so they were busy buzzing around. We saw several baskets of what looked like typical bar food (cheese balls, fries, and pizza) being brought out to the tables. Mmm...deep fried cheesy goodness. According to their website, the Dugout has been a neighborhood bar since 1954, and was purchased by the current owners in 2017. It's been updated inside, but it still maintains its dive bar charm. We're very much looking forward to visiting again for a meal and a cold beer. read more

I'll admit that this place looks like somewhere you wouldn't want to eat. So far I've been twice and the food is awesome. I've had a burger and the pulled pork nachos. My only criticism is the portions are enormous and neither of these dishes reheat well. It would be great if they had half portions of the nachos because I don't always want to pay for a huge plate of nachos and watch the other half get tossed into the garbage. We came here on Friday night to grab some pizza. You have to sit yourself and there are two parts to this bar- the older side and the newer side. We didn't realize this at first and sat in the older side. It was a little rowdy due to a game on the tv. Our waitress was nice but kept disappearing. We enjoyed the food and prices were good. For a dive bar this place seems far from it. They have a huge outdoor area to make up for a tighter feel inside. The pizza is really good according to the hundreds I saw being taken down by the people near me. Pitchers of beer flow well and with some great fried food to help, it's a recipe for success. Also has darts and plenty of televisions for sports action. Food is not the best ever but is fairly affordable and gets the job done in a pinch. Cheap drinks and they have some craft beer and liquor options from local breweries and distilleries. Real solid place to go with a few friends and kick back, have good conversation over some strong drinks. The Dugout is that dive bar you've been looking for since you graduated from IU. Cheap beer, surprisingly good food, and friendly staff. If this place had pool tables I would rent a room here. Also - it needs real dart boards. It's got the arcade ones - you know, the ones where the darts don't always stick and it just doesn't feel right, and so now you look like an idiot because you bragged to your date about how good at darts you were, but you really meant felt dart boards, and so now you're having to make what seem like petty excuses to explain why you got beat by someone who has never played darts before. I digress. Basically this is a dive bar for adults. Time to grow up and find that bar where everybody knows your name and they're always glad you came, etc. read more

The fried pepper jack was not good and we had to send it back. The dough was too thick and there was barely any cheese. They also just opened a patio but clearly have not hired more servers. Our server kept disappearing because she had to wait on tables inside and outside. I counted 3 waiters for 36 tables. It got to the point where we would just go straight to the bar ourselves. Refused to service us due to coming from the Pickeled Pedler!!! We had 14 in count and were in no form intoxicated or unable to act civilized. One thing that was in common was we all were BLACK. Wow. It's weird, uneven, and a dive; I love it. A perfect booze den right on Virginia Avenue that dwells in a super old and oddly shaped brick building. The inside is much bigger than anticipated from the street, and the amount of swilling is surprising as well. Customers appear to be hard core regulars, but willing to make new friends as well. Before I knew it, I was kicking back shots with my new BFFs. The drinks are a generous pour, the beer selection wasn't that bad, and prices fair. The food looks to be pretty good for a dive and the specials appear to be classics and rotating. Don't expect the knuckle tatt'ed condescending hipster bartender or Foo Foo organic cocktails that this neighborhood typically offers.
