Way better than your average Chinese food! Although this restaurant is ALWAYS crowded, they are a pretty good option to grab food to go if you are willing to stop by and pick it up. My absolute favorite every time is their chicken fried rice. There is something about the way they do it that doesn't make it seem overly greased and fattening. You get good chunks of chicken and it always tastes yummy! The sesame chicken and general tsos chicken are both pretty standard. The dumplings are fantastic (but don't get these carry out) My husband loves the crab rangoons here. Best Chinese food I have found in the area but if you are coming to sit down be prepared to wait and for it to be very very crowded, even on week nights. No one can deny how good their soup dumplings are (I've had better, but beggars can't be choosers when it comes to soup dumpling availabilities), but I like a lot of their other dishes too. I recommend the Twice Cooked Pork, the Eggplant, the Egg and Tomato, and the String Beans. Especially for the lunch deal, I think it's a great bargain. Some of their other dishes are a bit hit or miss, but I have to say, I haven't tried too many of them because the staples are that good. Service is just average, but they're usually pretty good about getting your checks to you and everything. Occasionally, there will be a dirty plate, which is not ideal. This a quite the find. We were walking from MIT to Harvard along Mass Ave. They have a great variety on their lunch menu. My daughter ordered the sesame chicken lunch special and I a stir-fried udon with beef (not lunch special). Both were very good. Great flavor, not too greasy nor over salted. Ordered from DoorDash because I missed some authentic Chinese food. And I must say it is decently authentic in terms of the steamed dumplings and fried stinky tofu. I noticed some reviews complaining about the thick dumpling wrappers, but those are the ones I prefer since that's the result of hand made wrappers. My family and I used to make these all the time, so perhaps this has a nostalgia effect for me. I really like the vegetarian dumplings. And pork & chive is a classic. The stinky tofu pleasantly surprised me because the sauces it came with were delicious. The tofu pieces are smaller than I'm used to but it meant more surface area for flavor. I was not a fan of the pig ears because the sauce was too salty. The texture is spot on, but something about the flavor is too strong. I think it needs less salt and more chili oil or something. Soup taste was just pure fishy flavor. Could not bare to eat more than one. Also got the shandong pan fried dumplings. These were terrible. World's thickest dough, appeared steamed, not fried or crispy all. The pork again was so pink it was scary. We tried to eat them, but ended up taking them home to try to cook them more and may try to eat them at home. Had a good flavor once you got past the gag reflex of thinking they were raw. Finally we tried the 3 cup chicken. So many bones! I gave up on the chicken and just spooned the sauce onto my white rice to try to eat that, and even then just the sauce was full of tiny bone pieces. Sauce had a good flavor though. And lastly for service- we were seated and ordered before all parties of 2 people around us, but they all got their dumplings and we did not. I had seen this restaurant when going down the list of hot food places in the Harvard area. It was a Friday evening, the place was packed and the line was significant. I was wondering what the all the buzz was about so I decided to give this place a try. My friend and I weren't too hungry at the time so we ended up just order the soup dumplings and the pork & leek steamed dumplings. The dumpling filling in the regular dumplings weren't as well seasoned, though it was packed with meat (which was a plus). I was a bit disappointed that the outside wasn't as chewy as I had imagined. Overall the regular dumplings were just average compared to ones I've had elsewhere in NYC and the DC areas. On the other hand, the soup dumplings were more flavorful and fun to eat. The outside was nice and thin just to the point that they wouldn't pop when you grabbed them with utensils and the filling was nicely portioned. Came here with a larger group for my birthday and got seated at one of their large round tables. It was great to be able to sample a bunch of dishes family-style. Highlights were the soup dumplings (xiao long bao) and Szechuan style sliced fish (soooo good!). Excellent service for a Chinese restaurant - the waiter brought out a "cake" made out of red bean baos at the end and even played the happy birthday song over the entire restaurant's stereo. There was very little broth in the dumpling- so it was more like a giant steamed gyoza. Which I wouldn't be complaining about if the dough didn't have a funky texture. About 8-10minutes walk from the Central Square T station, the Dumpling House welcomes you in with a warm ambience and impresses you with its availability of tables to accommodate many groups. I visited on a very rainy Friday evening at 6pm, but the restaurant still managed to get packed when we left at 8pm. We ordered a variety of dishes to share family-style and were impressed by how tasty everything was. It can be overwhelming flipping through the gigantic menu, but this also means there are plenty of options for those with dietary restrictions. True to its namesake, the dumplings were plump and tasty. My friend remarked that the watercress tasted especially fresh and cooked well. The only issue we noticed with the soup dumplings were that the dough was a bit thick and would stick to the pan, resulting in the soup spilling out. The food here is always consistently good, every time I have been. (I've been around 6 to 8 times in total. Yelp says 6, but I think I may have been a check in or two)! The service is always fine, but the last time we went, we brought our family for a "day after thanksgiving" meal, and we'd made reservations for our party of 7. Upon arrival, we were told that we were only allowed to stay for 1 hour, since others had reservations. I was a bit puzzled by that, I have to admit. We called ahead, showed up with our whole party right on time, and then were asked to hurry up/order/eat in 1 hour? Since we are paying customers, I was not super thrilled with that. I've never had anyone give me a time limit on my dining before... which is why I took away one star. I'd like to know if this is a policy that they've been regularly trying to enforce on busy nights when they have a lot of reservations in order to get more turnover, because if so, I may not go back unless things are a bit slower, so that I can take my time and enjoy my food. read more

We were visiting Boston and ended up at Dumpling House and it was one of my favorite meals of the trip! We called ahead for a reservation for 7 people and we were seated as soon as everyone arrived. What we ordered: Appetizers- - spicy pig ears: this may sound weird and gross but if you are adventurous you should give it a try! It is so delicious and has a very unique texture. Very chewy. It comes smothered in a spicy chili sauce - jellyfish: also a unique texture. Loved the sauce with the sesame oil and fresh garlic. Also has some sliced veggies. - stinky tofu: not actually stinky like what you can get on the streets in Taiwan but the sauce is fairly similar and they give a very generous portion. It comes with some cabbage on top. - hot and sour soup: we got an XL and it was enough for 6 adults with seconds for some. Dumplings: - fried pork and chive dumplings: we figured we had to give dumplings a try since it is their namesake. They were so juicy and fried to perfection. Make sure you soak them in the included sauce! Main dishes: - C1 (I forget the actual name) but it is a spicy szechuan fish dish. We got a large and it was amazing. Lots of tender fish paired with veggies in some spicy broth. - spicy shredded beef with peppers- this was super spicy! I just picked out the beef but everyone enjoyed it. - braised eggplant with basil: yuuuum. Eggplant was cooked perfectly and it was a little sweet and the perfect balance to all our spicy dishes. - mapo tofu: I didn't try this because I was too full but others said it was average. Overall the food was amazing!!! The best chinese meal I've had in awhile. Comes with tea and ice water but white rice is extra. Service was super fast. Our appetizers started coming out soon after we ordered and all the food came out in a timely manner and was spaced out nicely. Also, the owner came over to say hello after our meal and she was SO kind, welcoming and friendly! It was so lovely to meet her. When I hear the name Dumpling House, it conjures images of a magical place full of great smells, happy chopstick-wielding patrons, and steamed pockets of love. Unfortunately, this food-filled establishment is far from a storybook setting and tells a more rushed, stressful tale. After being blatantly ignored for about 2 minutes by the guy intensely focusing on the cash register, the hostess swooped by and said we could be seated immediately. Score! We were seated and presented with a looong menu. Seeing as we're at the house of dumplings, the pork & crab soup dumplings were a must. We also chose to share the General Gau's chicken and got a side of rice to go along with it. The complimentary tea on the table was pretty watery.. but hot at least. The dumplings arrive quickly, and these guys are good! The flavors of the pork and crab blended well together, and the broth was hot and savory. Be careful with your bites though, or you're sure to end up with some squirts on your clothes. Beware of the obstacles along the way: the General Gau's chicken was treacherously terrible. The sauce was goopy, and we bit into a few pieces that were bright pink and very undercooked. The way the chicken was prepared made it apparent that the meat wasn't of good quality. And the service was so nonexistent that we couldn't even let them know about this, get more napkins (after the dumpling squirting incident), or ask for hot sauces to improve the chicken's taste. As with any fairytale, I should have seen this ending coming. Order the dumplings. Don't expect much in terms of service. Leave with a full, warm belly.
