We ordered the soup dumplings, pan fried dumplings, noodle dish, and several cooked dishes. Soup dumplings did not taste fresh at all and the meat tasted yucky! The fried dumplings were average and the cooked dishes were so heavily packed with cornstarch and breading it could not be eaten. I am shocked to see the positive reviews, only can deduce that the reviews are fake or these people don't have Chinese food on a regular basis. I've been here about a dozen times. A place I really want to like but after today I've had enough. This is poor quality Chinese food that doesn't taste great and leaves you feeling gross afterwards. I've tried most of their dishes both in store and take out and multiple locations. For this review I'll focus on their namesake the dumpling. First, why is their meat a weird reddish color? The texture of the boiled dumping is fine but lacks taste - you can't taste the ingredients. Next, for the pan fried dumplings, they came out soggy and lumpy. Even if the ingredients are poor, why can't you properly pan fry dumplings where the bottom is crispy and golden brown? I hesitated on commenting to the waiters but it was too gross, I had to. They took it back and returned it after throwing them in a deep fryer. Sigh... Experiences like this really hold the greater Boston area back in the food scene. Really thick xlb - these aren't Shanghainese soup dumplings with signature ultra-thin dumpling skin, but rather 2x the size and thick skin. Tasty but just don't expect the Shanghai/Din Tai Fung kind. Steamed dumplings (pork/leek) were tasty but pretty oily and a bit on the salty side. Beef scallion pancake is tasty and authentic. This place seems quite busy! I remember when it was a buddhist study place that occasionally offered vegetarian buffet and dishes. It used to be quiet and calm. Now, 5 years since I've left Boston, this place has transformed into a bustling restaurant. There is a little waiting area up front. The restaurant itself is large. Service is fast. Prices are reasonable. The dishes I had were all quite good, from the chicken corn egg drop soup to the pan-fried dumplings to the soup dumplings. The flounder was amazing, as was the oyster pancake. The string beans were excellent. The tofu and pig intestine dishes were just OK, but I'm usually not a fan anyways. Overall, the dishes ranged in how good they were, but nothing was anywhere close to being bad. The portions are very reasonable. My brother who comes here often says that the quality varies from visit to visit. Sometimes they switch the ingredients in the dishes by accident. Dumpling House is the brainchild of people behind the popular Gourmet Dumpling House (GDH) in Chinatown, according to Eater Boston. It occupies the former Greater Buddhist Cultural Center tea room. The menu is very similar to what you would find from GDH. Can't go wrong with the soup dumplings (xiao long bao) and Sichuan water boiled fish. They have a few things like "Chinese hamburger" aka rou jia mo aka fatty pork inside 2 buns, and pork/lamb skewers that I hadn't seen in GDH. Prices are marginally more than Chinatown GDH, but since the space can seat about 90 people, you can at least get into the restaurant without enduring a massive wait time. However, this place, much like GDH, fills up quickly. The interior is much classier and cleaner than some typical restaurant. Even the menu is classy. Service was friendly. I got the mini soup dumplings and the chicken and cabbage dumplings (fried instead of steamed). They both tasted good and they give you a good amount of each. The soup dumplings were slightly bigger than I'm typically used to (not a bad thing) and drier/not as soupy as I would've liked, but still tasted pretty good. The fried dumplings weren't very oily despite being, well, fried, which is a big plus in my book. The sauce for the dumplings was so good - I ended up using only that for both things I ordered and not touching the sauce that came with the soup dumplings, which was more of a vinegar soy sauce. read more

I feel like this place is hyped up too much. Lets start with what everyone comes here for. The Soup dumplings are good for boston soup dumplings. But if were comparing soup dumplings with NYC or even China, then there is no comparison. The soup dumplings here are a bit bigger but what makes me not like these too much is the broth inside. The broth has this groggy feeling where it makes it dense and not liquid. I can not really explain it without you having to try it, but the soup dumplings here give off an after taste that isn't suppose to appear. Enough of soup dumplings, everything else on this menu pretty on point. I've gotten the beef noodle soup a couple of times, and compared with taiwan cafe, this place beats that place out of the park. Its not one of the best i've had before, but it does beat every other restaurant in Boston/cambridge area. If you're huge on meat/ribs, i recommend geting the baby ribs which taste and look exactly like korean ribs. We finished our meal and nobody came to check on us, refill our water or to give us check. The girls and I split several dishes and all were really good, but very oily and salty. Crab meat XLB - Pretty good! Slightly thicker skins than I'm used to but had lots of soupy goodness and held it's form well without tearing. Pepper beef w/ onions & peppers - Yummy! saucy and flavorful but definitely need to eat it with rice. Beef was chewy b/c Chinese people like to use cheaper cuts usually. 3 cups chicken - Saltyyyyy! Small pieces of chicken w/ lots of bone. The sauce was too salty for my taste even with white rice. Spicy pork - My favorite of the night. Picked it because the picture looked so good and it did not disappoint. Spicy and big, but thin strips of pork that was pretty much like bacon. Really enjoyed this dish. Chinese water spinach - Greasy but fresh. Typical water spinach, love it. It only really tastes good when it's flash cooked in oil anyway. Overally, good food and good service. Quick, attentive and get you in, get your food, get you out. Definitely beats the trek to Chinatown for food, but parking on Mass Ave is a pain still. Don't get me wrong, the food here is great (sometimes a bit too greasy), but it just makes me miss home and authentic Chinese food even more. This place is always packed during dinner time. At times the service seems a little rushed, but I suppose when the line is out the door, they are trying to get tables open ASAP. DH is hard to review because it depends so much on what you order. First, the XLB. All the people saying that they have thin skin need to buy new dictionaries. These are twice the size of what you'd find at somewhere like Din Tai Fung, and the skins are about twice as thick. Somehow, despite having thick skins, they're pretty hard to pick up without breaking. Fortunately, the thick skins actually taste pretty good, just more like the skin for boiled dumplings instead of your prototypical XLB wrapper. The filling is fine: not as porky as a top-end place, and could use some more ginger, but not bad. The pan fried pork dumplings are great. The contrast between the crisp bottoms and chewy tops are perfect, and the filling is flavorful. Likewise, the fried rice we got had a generous amount of shrimp, meat, and egg, and was very well-seasoned. The garlicky big bean sprouts are exactly how you expect big bean sprouts to taste. We had a pork and Chinese celery dish, which was decent, if not very memorable. The rice cakes with pork were nice and chewy, and I think they added some seaweed to it, which I liked but some people found off-putting. Unfortunately, the Sichuan fish (water boiled fish) here is very mediocre. The fish is overcooked and mushy, and the broth isn't really spicy or numbing and lacks richness from the (theoretical) Pixian bean paste base. This basically isn't the same dish as what you'd find at Chengdu Taste, Sichuan Impression, or Lao Sze Chuan, and it's not a change for the better. read more

Love the mini soup dumplings here! Dumpling House is probably the best quality Chinese food in the immediate area around Harvard/MIT. To be honest, the menu is pretty hefty, and not all of the items on it are stellar. The sauteed rice cakes are very delicious, the mini soup dumplings are a must-order, and the mapo tofu and scallion pancakes are pretty standard. Lamb with Cumin is not something you can order anywhere, and while very salty, is pretty delicious. The beef noodle soup was extremely meh. Not very tasty or flavorful, but pretty cheap for such a large volume of food. I also don't really recommend the non-soup dumplings, as they are only passable. Generally speaking, the service is pretty standard Chinese restaurant quality. The place is very busy, and the goal is not really to be served, it's to eat nice food! WAIT: We can on a rainy Tuesday night at 8pm, and it was PACKED. Our party of two still had a 15 minute wait. Wow. Line moves quickly, and the number system where they give you a piece of paper with a scrawled number delivers an authentic Chinese restaurant experience. FOOD: Soup Dumplings were great. Skin was thin, filling was well seasoned, and the soup itself wasn't too salty. Sauteed Green Beans were on point and inspired a new love of green beans. The Fried Pork Chop with Pepper was a little too spicy for the desired level of spice we requested and a little too fried to be delicious, but good effort. SERVICE: Prompt, friendly, and polite. DECOR: Nicer than any Chinese restaurant of equivalent deliciousness. This is some high-class stuff right here. I was sad to find out that this place's idea of a soup dumpling turned out to be entirely different from what I am used to. I was expecting a dumpling with thin skin, an abundance of piping hot flavorful broth, and tender pork filling. The dumpling skin here was on the thicker side, and the meat inside was similar to that of a roast pork, very salty. The broth was almost none existent and to me, seemed like soy sauce and that was it. They were warm but not piping hot. The pan fried noodle was pretty good, with a lot of toppings (carrots, celery, etc) and an average amount of noodle, and there was a ton of sauce (thumbs up). Overall, I wouldn't recommend the soup dumplings but if you're here for other Chinese food, I'd say it's worth a try! The quality of food is identical as Chinatown (same chef I'm told) Today for lunch I had pork/crab XLB and spicy beef noodle soup w/ spinach. My standard order when I'm solo. The beef noodle soup is exactly the same as the Chinatown restaurant (which is excellent). The XLB's was very good, however the soup was a bit watery. It should be richer. This place just opened this week, so I'm sure there are a few things they need to work out. I mentioned this to the owner and manager of the restaurant, and they appreciated the feedback and said they would correct it. In fact, I was pleasantly surprised how open they were with feedback, so they can correct them! That's how customer service is done! It has pretty much the best authentic Chinese food in the square. It's a bit on the pricier side, but if that's not a problem for you then I'd suggest it.
