The best way to describe this restaurant is: same great tasting food as Chinatown meets cleanliness of Cambridge. We all know how notorious Chinatown (Chinatowns across the US) can be for how clean they are. But I want to point out what is of utmost importance, the food. I Love the dumpling house in Chinatown. And once I heard that there was a sister restaurant in Cambridge (which is closer to where I live) I had to come try. As I stated before, the food here is just as wonderful. The xiao long bao is always a must, but all the dishes here are a hit. I would probably have to say the worst part of my experience was the parking, which is not even the restaurant's fault. I wanted to try out a new restaurant to ring in the new year. Dumpling House is a great hidden gem, There was a long line for takeout but plenty of seats to be seated. The hot and sour soup was the perfect balance of hot and sour, not too spicy. The lamb might've had too much rosemary but was still a great treat. On Monday 15th of April I arrived with my husband for dinner. It was full apart from a table for two at the front as you enter. A young waiter came and started talking to my husband even though I was standing in front of my husband I was trying to talk to the waiter. A second later a lady standing behind the desk as you enter gets the attention of the waiter. I watched as they communicated with body language. She made clear that she didn't want to me to sit at the table at the front because of the colour of my skin. I am black. The young waiter turn to us and said, there is table at the back but it needs to be cleaned. We waited for a minute and then he showed us where to sit. I was so shocked it took me two minutes to make decision to walk out. As we were leaving we saw the table they did not want us to sit had now two white people sitting. Racism is ugly but it is worse when it comes from another minority. shame on you! I am glad I did not give you my money. read more

I come here often because of the convenience of location, the dearth of Chinese restaurants in Cambridge, and my frequent cravings for gourmet Chinese food. The food and service are okay - they'll do. A little pricier than I would like to pay for the quality, but not terribly unacceptable. Not as good as Gourmet Dumpling House in Chinatown (nor, I'm fairly certain, as cheap). I remember the dumplings to be on the blander side - the skin is very thick. Same with the soup dumplings. Definitely not as authentic as I would have liked. Very typical of Chinese restaurants making the attempt to be less "Americanized" but also catering to the general American public at the same time. If you're craving that authentic, home cooked eggplant taste, do not order the eggplants here. You will be disappointed. If anything, I would go for Szechuan style food for a more authentic experience (as a previous reviewer mentioned). We are still nervous about eating indoors in crowded restaurants so came early and were relieved to see only 2 tables of customers. Weirdly, the host sat us right next to one of the tables. Since the dining room was nearly empty, we asked to be spaced further away. Annoyingly, he sat the next party right next to us. We ordered wontons in chili oil which was tasty but so salty swimming in soy sauce. We had the pork soup dumplings and avoided the dipping sauce as we suspected they would be salty enough. The skins were thicker than usual for soup dumplings probably to keep them sturdier and not break. They were a bit salty as well but bearable. We shared an entree of string beans with spicy ground pork and alas, it was shockingly salty. Inedible salty. I know people love to drown their Chinese food in soy sauce but real Chinese cuisine is much more subtly seasoned. The flavors were good but the salt level was unbearable. As can be expected, service isn't great but the food is quite delicious. They have great dumplings and xiao long bao. I definitely cant tell you if this is authentic Chinese food but I can tell you that it was down right delicious. I had never ventured out into trying dumplings so I was excited to try something new. They offer a variety of dumplings both steamed and fried. I opted for the steam version as it was suggested by the waiter to be better and more popular here. Once they arrived there was definitely a split second when I thought I should have just stuck to the fried rice. I was pleasantly surprised after my first bite, I definitely did not expect the broth that began to ooze out. The next round I opted to just stuffing the whole dumpling in my mouth, biting it became to messy. I rounded off the meal with white rice and spicy garlic cucumbers. It's just okay. Not worth the hype and definitely not worth the price. I got the pork soup dumplings, chicken and broccoli, and a small white rice and it was $40 before tip. Plus, the entrees don't even come with white rice, you have to order it separately. I got the soup dumplings because everyone raves about them. They were okay and I definitely would not order them again. The dumplings are very doughy and barely had any soup in them. The chicken with broccoli is fine. Pretty bland. Nothing fantastic. Been here a couple times. Service is excellent. Food is really hit or miss though, definitely depends on what you order. Don't get the Hot + Sour Soup, it's honestly the worst I've ever had. I'm not a huge fan of their dumplings either unfortunately but I haven't tried all of them (there's a number of different dumpling options--hence the restaurant name). The Kung Pao Chicken is a solid dish though! Highly recommend getting that one & will come back for it. Don't be misguided by the name of the restaurant, they have a rich menu with a good variety of dumplings but also a lot of other things. The menu is pretty classical, perhaps without the most traditional Chinese dishes that are less known internationally and strongly loved by the Chinese, but for an American/international environment it works perfectly. I think they also adjust a bit their style of cooking in order to meet the tastes of international customers, which can mean a slight departure from tradition and Chinese experts might be disappointed, but it works perfectly for me. Soup dumplings were good. $13.95 for 7 dumplings, which I think is about average for soup dumplings. I would order them again. The spicy chicken was not as good. $17.95 for a pretty average sized portion. Usually for $18 I can have enough food for leftovers for at least one meal, but not in this case. We came here during a downpour of spring rain, late on a Sunday night. We were craving some dumplings to keep us warm and cozy while it was chilly and wet outside. We got the pork dumplings, rice, and beef stir fry along with fried veggie rolls. Everything came out quickly, and was steaming hot. The perfect comfort food when all you want is to relax. It was sort of like being at home with my petite Indian Mum - our waitress came by and reserved my date to make sure he ate the rest of the stir fry. It was adorable! Me and two friends popped in here for a celebratory dinner after finishing field exams. We ordered the la zi ji ding (fried chicken bits), the beef in chili peppers, and a round of xiao long bao (soup dumplings). The XLB were flavorful. They perhaps held their shape too well - the soup should have come out hot enough to dissolve the dumpling skin. Beef was delicious, and the peppers were sufficiently spicy and sour. The la zi ji ding was a little pale and could had larger and more fried pieces of chicken. However, they added some fried bits of onion that were absolutely delicious - it's always a good sign when you want to pick around for the garnish after you finish the dish! PS: 6% discount for cash. As someone who has been to Din Tai Fung on the west coast and knows soup dumplings, I was craving something similar here in the Boston area. We came to Dumpling House on a busy Sunday afternoon during the lunch rush, however did not have to wait long to be seated. Dumpling House is your standard Chinese restaurant - same appetizers, noodles, soups, and stir fry. Their menu is big, but what I was really looking for was the dumpling options. I like the fact that they offer both steamed and fried dumplings. We got the mini soup dumplings with pork, pork with crabmeat, and seafood dumplings. Let me tell you, these soup dumplings are not "mini" at all! Very generous portion sizes, although from my experience, the soup dumplings could be slightly smaller so that it can fit comfortably on my Asian soup spoon and easier to bite into. I feel that because the dumpling's size was so big, it was easy for the soup broth to squirt out and onto your clothing when you bite into it (which did happen to me). Taste wise, this is one of the better soup dumpling restaurants in the Boston area, but does not compare to Din Tai Fung. We felt that we couldn't taste the crab flavor in the pork and crabmeat dumpling - disappointing. Sad to say, we feel that the seafood dumpling tasted better than the soup dumplings. We also ordered the hot and sour soup (standard), seafood soup with seaweed (lacking seafood and mainly tofu) and sautéed rice cake with pork (good). None of the food here really stuck out as exceptional. It's your typical Asian fare. I really wish that they had boba drinks/ smoothies on the menu. Service wise - very fast, food came out piping hot, quick to remove your finished plates, and attentive staff. All in all, I think I will keep looking for other soup dumpling restaurants. This restaurant feels very authentic and food was great and price was fair. They had some type of "favorite staff" going on and I see they are trying to improve in service which is always great to see. I did enjoy their soup dumpling and eggplant dish. Twice cooked pork belly could have some more meat but overall their food was better than many Chinese restaurants and tasted authentic. The only problem is after eating this restaurant, both I and my husband got sick and yes I am 100% certain it is from their food. Dumpling House was a great choice for a tasty dinner on a Saturday night before a performance. We were expecting the wait to be nearly an hour and were pleasantly surprised to only have a ten minute wait. This was a busy place, but not overly so, as our reservation was for 8pm. We ordered the vegetarian dumplings, seafood dumplings, spicy wok beef, scallion pancakes, sautéed watercress and spicy tofu. They start you off with hot tea--I'm pretty used to that but often find the "starter" tea at Chinese restaurants to be lacking. Not here! I had at least four cups. The spicy tofu was GREAT! It was firm enough to be handled with chopsticks but not overly hard. It sported a nice blend of spices that made it enjoyable without trying too hard. A lot of places do tofu but don't do it well, so this was a refreshing iteration of the dish. I'm also a fan of the wok-made spicy beef, which comes with a host of veggies a la wok and has a nice bit of spice. The beef was better quality than what you find at many Chinese restaurants, a nice departure from the fatty, stringy variety that abounds elsewhere. Service was along the lines of that at a traditional Asian restaurant -- to the point. Our server was reasonably attentive and was especially good about clearing away plates as we finished them to make room for our other shared dishes. The four of us were really quite pleased with our visit to Dumpling House, and while I hear from my local Cambridge friends that the Boston location is a bit better, I was happy with the meal and would return! read more

However, the fact of the matter is that the food lies smack in the middle of the sea of "decent" that is Chinese food in Boston. The worst is that the prices lean expensive relative to its East Asian comps. The xiao long bao / XLB here is no slouch, but is again roughly comparable to most of the other "good/no slouch" XLB's in the city. The restaurant itself is fairly large (though still much smaller than the big Cantonese houses in Chinatown), and service is above average for a Chinese restaurant. read more

I could eat this for months and months and just sweat out steam and be ok with it. The only down fall of dumpling house is the seating set up is horrible. Let me start by saying that the only reason that Dumpling House got the second star was because the soup dumplings were actually soup dumplings, not like the place that we tried in Provincetown. However, even though Dumpling House is close by, I do not think I will be going back. I ordered the mini soup dumplings with pork and crab meat (A33) and sauteed jumbo shrimp with scallions (C20). By far the worst of the two was the shrimp with scallions. After all, who the heck serves breaded (previously frozen) shrimp in a beef gravy?!?! (To be fair, it may have been a pork gravy, but it tasted quite institutional.) The mini soup dumplings were not very mini. I actually measured one of the leftovers when I got home, and they are 2.25 inches in diameter. One of my favorite things about a good soup dumpling is being able to pop it into your mouth and have the soup explode as you bite into it. This was a 3 bite dumpling, minimum. The flavor was fair, but if there had ever been anything seafood near this dumpling, it may have been dropped by a seagull that flew near the pig pen. I did mention that I thought I had been given the pork soup dumpling (A31), and the staff member indicated that she would make the adjustment on my bill. It didn't happen, but I wasn't going to make a fuss over $0.45. Overall, I was in the mood for some good dumplings, and came away disappointed. read more

So glad I found this place. When I got back from visiting china I was really in the mood for some authentic food in Boston. I came here with a few friends solely for dumplings and I was very impressed. Though they aren't the best xialongbao (soup dumplings) I've ever had, they are the best in Boston. The dough is a little thick in comparison to the real deal but I've learned my standards need to be a lower here. The pan fried pork buns were great also- definitely worth the wait it takes for them to be ready. We ordered the Taiwanese style salt and pepper fried chicken which was like crack. Little bite sized pieces of salty goodness that were devoured within seconds of arriving. The bok choy was great also. Highly recommend. I love Dumpling House! You really can't go wrong because almost everything on the menu is fantastic. I've eaten here numerous times and here are some of my favorites: Spicy Szechuan Sliced Fish. Honestly, it's the best thing on the menu. Be prepared to sweat while you enjoy the deliciousness. Sautéed snow peas. They are very good when they are fresh. On two occasions they were not, and it made me sad. I had to deduct half a star from my review for that. Scallion pancakes are yummy. Shredded beef with string beans are flavorful. The beef short ribs are also good. Their noodle dishes are also good, but have been hit or miss a couple times. And of course the dumplings! I prefer the seafood dumplings, but my friends swear by the XLB. The service is generally good, but seating can be tight if you have more than 4 people. Parking is very hard in this neighborhood. This is a pretty good restaurant for casual, hearty Chinese food. The pan-fried dumplings were tasty, with very generously sized filling. The mapo tofu was good as well, and tasted even more flavorful reheated as leftovers the day after. To be a bit nit-picky, the scallions could have been chopped more finely, and the dough on the dumplings could have been thinner, but such standards are to be reserved for a different scale of restaurant.
