We went there for food the second day we visited Boston. I would score the food a 3.5 and the servers a 3.5. The ONLY reason why I scored this lower is because the lady that was the cashier that day was rude and unaccommodating. There was a wait and we opted not to share a table. (2 of us) So as parties went ahead of us, which was fine to accommodate the size, finally there was an open table and so they decided to NOT seat us at the table of 4 and wanted us to wait LONGER for a small table. I went to her and mentioned to her that there was NO longer a wait and why she couldn't seat us at the open table, rather make us wait longer for a double table. I've been in the restaurant business and I have never seen this before and it's such a poor experience. We left immediately. She didn't even look at me and respond to me. Just said: ''That's a table for 4". Uhm, there's NO ONE in line! Even if the food was amazing, that wouldn't make it ok. So, I normally wouldn't 'invest' time in writing a bad review, but I wanted to make sure it's about the overall experience for me and others who may read this review. Having lived in several major cities around the world, and eaten different styles of Chinese food in each, I have found this place to be one of the better places I have tried. I love soup dumplings and whenever I'm in a new city I try to find a place that serves them. Trust me they are hard to find. Needless to say, I've had my fair share of them. This place is good! I wouldn't say that they're the best I've ever had but they're acceptable. My first batch was nice and hot with all the juicy flavor in the dumpling. The second tray majority of the dumplings were punctured and the soup had spilled out :(. The taste of the dumpling filling was okay. I can say that I had a descent experience here. This post comes from two taste buds that have lived in the north part of China for over 22 yrs. My friend and I went to the Dumpling House in a cold winter night. Honestly, this restaurant has 3.5 stars yelp review, which is not that good. However, based on my previous experience, if a Chinese restaurant is ranking HIGH on Yelp, usually it equals to NOT authentic :-P vice versa. So my friend and I went there without any hesitation. Indeed, this is a great place for soup buns. Again, if you like soup bun like me, you should try this place! Can not say the same great words for other dishes though... Soup bun (xiao long bao): the inside is so good, the meat is well seasoned, the buns are all freshly steamed. The only tiny issue is the soup part. The soup is not well contained in the bun. For some reason, most of the buns do not contain soup. Anyway, compared to other bun places in Boston, the bun here is awesome (better than Winsor dim sum)! Xi-an meat bun (rou jia mo): it's too expensive ($5) for a tiny bun (the bun is smaller than a lady's palm). The cool thing is the meat contains cilantro in it. I am a huge fan of cilantro. But the meat is not well seasoned/stewed. Usually, the pork in it should be stewed for over 3 hours to fully absorb the seasoning flavor, I felt the meat here did not stew for long enough time. Pan seared clams (la chao ge li): I have to say, this should not be a recommended dish. When not using too much spices, the quality of this dish is 90% determined on the quality of the clams. Unfortunately, the clams in this restaurant are okay quality, but far from great. So this dish is a so-so level. Pan seared pork (hui guo rou): This dish is a surprise. They add cabbage to it, which is not traditional. But it surprisingly tastes awesome! I recommend this dish, very savory. In order to make it tasty, the pork contains a lot of fat, sort of like bacon. If you are on diet, stay away from this dish. It is a real devil. Overall, based on the quality of food and surrounding Chinese Restaurant qualities in Boston area, I would give 4 stars. They have a long menu, I believe there are more goodies worth to try! read more

This place is excellent. It's always packed but the wait is never bad. It's a really great place to get dumplings. I've tried a bunch of different things because I always eat family style. My favorite has been the barbecue spareribs and beef scallion pancakes. The ribs are really tender and they come right off the bone. The beef scallion pancakes is a great twist on the classic scallion pancakes. You really can't go wrong with the assortment of foods on the menu. The service is great. I visited this place on a Sunday. It was rather busy, serving a diverse clientele but (seemingly) majority Chinese. There were many families so there are the occasional kids running around, making some noise. I had steamed dumplings (beef and celery, chicken and cabbage) and enjoyed it. Hot tea is complementary and is especially welcome on a cooler day like today. There were no red flags regarding cleanliness. Although the wait staff is clearly moving fast to serve food efficiently, there were numerous awkward moments in my experience. Overall, not too bad an experience. This actually is a pretty decent place if you can get over the two things...(1) the overall uncleanliness of the whole restaurant, dishes, utensils, cups, floors, etc. and (2) cramped space. On (1), I have no confidence they actually use clean water and soup for dishwashing. I'm afraid to take a peak inside the kitchen....so that probably is not a good thing. On (2), be prepared to sit right next or across from strangers... Once you get past those downsides, and know what to order from experience, you'll have quite a wonderful time here. If you're into xiao long bao, I recommend pork as is in most cases. With crab XLBs, you literally get a mouthful of "full" crab taste...not only (or less of, rather) the actual crab meat but the internal organs...!! See for yourself!!! It was a nut house in here on a Sunday night, and the hostess was very pushy and rude, and kept trying to get people to agree to sit at a large round table instead of at individual tables to save time. I got the steamed beef celery dumplings and I believe there were about 8 pieces per order. Each. Bite. Had. Cartilage. In. It. It was pretty disgusting, and the soupy, watered-down soy sauce (?) that came with it had an odd acidic flavor. I was misled by all positive reviews on google, yet if you check reviews on yelp they seem more fairly balanced about this place. If you like very hot peppery food, this may be the place for you but the large amount of oil and chili made us taste no food and vegetable flavor. We will never go back to this place. read more

A solid spot to get your crave for dumpling satisfied! Tried the Shandong style pan fried dumplings and the classic pork & leeks dumplings, which didn't disappoint. The pan fried dumplings came in huge pieces, so that was a bonus in my book. Both well-seasoned (not too greasy), I think my palate was satiated for the day :-) They also serve other dishes to complement this dumpling vaganza. The soup dumplings came out steaming hot and were fat, bursting with soup and flavor. My friend and I devoured them in a few minutes. I would say they're one of the better ones you can find in Boston as they really hit the spot! The beef noodle soup was average. It wasn't spicy at all and there could've been more veggies, but the broth was still hearty in flavor and satisfied my cravings The service was also average, but the food arrived quickly as well as the check. I come here a lot. It's great for a big group of people or when nobody can decide what they want to eat. The menu is big so there's something for everyone. My favorite dishes are the mini soup dumplings with pork, house special lamb with cumin, braised eggplant with basil, and sautéed peapod shoots with garlic. The peapod shoots tend to be expensive but if you haven't had them before you should get them because they will become your new favorite vegetable. Their food tends to lean more oily but I don't think I've ever had a bad meal here. If you come here hungry and can be seated right away the food comes super fast. There's always a line on Friday and Saturdays nights so plan accordingly. You also get a discount if you can pay cash. I think it might be 5% or something like that. Also, I really think the soup dumplings are the same as the ones at Gourmet Dumpling House in Chinatown. I've seen the boss lady at both places so if you want soup dumplings without the wait come here. read more

I have to say, I'm pretty shocked by all the lukewarm reviews I'm reading, because Dumpling House is one of my go-to spots. Their dumplings are what I think of when I think of comfort food. I have been ordering takeout here at least once a month, as well as bringing friends to have meals at the restaurant itself. I love trying out different things from their menu, though I always have my favorites that I go back to (mango chicken is a great love of mine). This is also the restaurant that managed to make me find tofu edible (texture has always freaked me out before finding these magical chefs). If you don't know where to start with their menu, I strongly recommend pork and leek dumplings. There are so many gems on this menu, though, so go wild and try a bunch of dishes; you'll definitely find a dish that will have you returning to this neighborhood gem. read more

Ordered hot and sour soup and crystal shrimp dumplings. Shrimp dumplings just so/so--very few pieces of actual shrimp, packed in a forcemeat that tastes fishy, not shrimpy. Hot and sour soup was very thick and cornstarchy, like a slightly spicy eggdrop soup, with tofu pieces and thin bamboo shoot strips. Comically bad was the service. I was wrestling with a shopping cart at the entrance, and the host came over to ask "Just one?" without making any moves to hold the door open or assist me in any way. (he did when I asked). Waitstaff brought water twice, spilled it on the table without wiping it up, left me with no utensils to eat my dumplings (until I asked). On my way out with the same unwieldy shopping cart, same host once more did not move to open the door for me (until I asked). So they're all fine when you ask for what you need (which is good), but have no intuitive idea of basic customer service. read more

This place is busy, likely owing to proximity to MIT. The vegetable fried rice was low grade (and equally low quality) with the most prevalent vegetable being lettuce believe it or not. As the picture will clearly indicate they believe that for $12 it's best to wok some white rice with carrot strands and lettuce with some random green plant matter that was so puny it was impossible to clearly identify. I cannot imagine anything is good as the dishes have none of the visual elements that suggest ingredients are fresh. Should rename Dumpster House. read more

Clearly delicious and highly recommended. The shandong dumplings are awesome. The small pork dumplings (I like pork & leek) are amazing. The soup dumplings are interesting and tasty too. Entree-wise I like the three cup chicken. They do throw bone-in pieces of chicken into a chopper for it so watch out for the bone pieces and shards. Eat carefully and enjoy!!!
