The vegetables are good and a solid portion, as is the mapo tofu. I like to order take out from here through Postmates as well even though they charge exorbitant delivery fees. Glad they added the yelp queue feature because the worst part is that they're so busy the wait can be super long and the area doesn't necessarily have a bunch of stuff to do at night. Honestly surprised to see the bad reviews. My boyfriend and I adore Dumpling House. When we were in Atlanta it was impossible to find good soup dumplings - there really wasn't any place that did it right. I can truly say Dumpling House does this right and this is coming from someone who has been to the original Din Tai Fung. Food: The soup dumplings here are excellent, and can ordered just pork or pork and crab. While it may not be as "delicate" as places you can find in Taiwan but the taste and most importantly - the soup - is definitely all there. The pan fried pork and cabbage buns and the Shan Dong Style pan fried dumplings are also delicious. I've also tried their 3 Cups Chicken which was a little too sweet for me but my boyfriend loved it. The twice cooked pork was also good but a little too oily and not enough pork. The fish dishes are really amazing though and I recently enjoyed the Fish filet with pickled mustard greens. Space: I actually used to come here growing up when it used to be a Buddhist temple with traditional Chinese vegetarian cafe. The interior hasn't really been changed and it still is a casual spot. This place can get really busy for dinner, I would definitely expect a wait during weekends. Last time we went there were maybe 5 couples in front of us but luckily it went quickly. Consistently delicious food. Good service. Conscientious and caring staff. Our party has people with specific dietary needs. The staff was very accommodating. If we (unknowingly) tried to order something that did not fit our needs, the waiters told us. They also checked on us several times to make sure that everything was going okay. We had eggplant, fish, tofu, and bok choy. I am Chinese, and have eaten these dishes at many authentic restaurants. In the US, these dishes are usually prepared the same way (gets boring). Not here. I used to go here ALL the time, since they've opened a few years ago. We go for the wings and dumplings. This week, my team at work wanted to order some food to celebrate an event. I called in the day before to place a fairly large order, around $322. First thing to note, this place does not give you a single penny discount...if you want catering, you have to order off their regular menu. Ok, fine. Anyways, they took my order and credit card over the phone for a pick up the next day. I get a call back asking how many settings...I thought that was nice. I don't need it but if you offer it, then sure. Later on, I get yet another call from a guy who is insisting that they charge me 15% tip. This caught me off guard as the lady who took my order (and whom I spoke to twice) did not mention anything about this. I am picking up the order so why should I tip you a mandatory 15%?!? You should be giving ME 15% off for choosing your restaurant for our party (even after trying your fried rice and being disappointed). Eventually the guy just brushes me off by saying its okay, thats fine and hung up on me. What kind of attitude is that! We used to love dining at your place and getting take out for work but forget it now. Not going back again. They've become so cocky and pushy...nothing like the humble behavior when they first opened up. Your business is probably booming but one by one, your attitude will chase away loyal customers. We took our business to our other fave Chinese spot, Zoe's Gourmet Chinese Cuisine (296-298 Beacon St., Somerville MA)...they were super friendly, willing to talk and consult on our orders, made suggestions, even offered a 5% discount on cash payment....upfront about delivery fee $2 and I gladly gave a nice tip to the driver. Their Sichuanese dishes are so authentic and delicious - really way better than Grand Sichuan, Sichuan garden, and the old thailand cafe on Mass Ave. We tried lots of dishes on Friday Appetizer 1. 夫妻肺片 Spicy beef tendon with chili sauce: Delicious. Very authentic sauce and perfect texture of beef. Dry style. 2. 麻辣耳丝 Chilled spicy pig ear: Delicious as well. We did half/half for this and 夫妻肺片Spicy beef tendon with chili sauce. Absolutely delicious 3, 蒜泥白切肉 Steamed bacon with fresh garlic: arguably the BEST dish we order. So tasty. It's chilled, nicely cooked and sliced. A MUST try. 4. 臭豆腐 Stinky tofu: very good. My husband commended that it's better than the ones he had in China 5. 小笼包 Mini soup dumplings with pork: One of the best in Boston. Three of us were waiting for our table. Friday dinner time, busy, understood. I mean, the wait wasn't even long. This woman called our number (37), while a group of five (white, professionals while we were three Asian students. Yes I can get this pretty ugly if I want to) showed up at the same time but they were number 27. She asked how many people were in their party and gave away our table, right in front of us, no apologies whatsoever. Didn't even hesitate. Nothing is really good, even weird. anything there you can find a better one in other Chinese restaurants. I normally don't stray from my Chinatown-only dumpling policy, but I was taken to Dumpling House by a friend and I was surprised at the quality of the food. We had the soup dumplings, another steamed pork dumpling, the scallion pancake and a pan-fried noodle dish. They were all really good, but noticeably salty. I had an MSG headache all the next day. The service, however, left something to be desired. We waited for our number to be called and when it was, another group jumped in ahead of us and took our table. When we tried to call them out on it, we were ignored and chastised for standing in the way. We got the next table, but it meant an additional 10 minute wait. At our table, the waitstaff in general seemed overwhelmed and annoyed. We had to ask a couple of times for water, and they barely spoke to us at all, even when we ordered. Spicy Salt and Pepper Tofu: This was one of my favorite things from Dumpling House in Cambridge, it usually is slightly pan-fried with a little breading tofu with a generous flavoring of salt/pepper. However, the tofu tasted a bit off and did not have the same texture as I am accustomed. It's still okay, but far from normal quality. A21. Crispy Fried Pork Intestines I do not know what other reviewers are talking about on Yelp at praising the fried Pork Intestines. The dish I ordered and received on April 11th was woefully under-cooked. I do not know what happened in your kitchen, but please be very careful, tripe and intestine cannot be served under-cooked. Trying to force faster cook with frying technique may make outer layer appear crispy, but there are eaters of Chinese descent, who knows what fried pork intestine are and if it is cooked thoroughly. There were semi-raw pieces mixed in to your dish. E19. Sauteed String Beans with Spicy minced Pork The string beans were overly seasoned, which is a shame, because I thought you had done a good job at wok cooking overall if not for the seasoning. A22. Yes. This is a place for soup dumplings. Some people write XLB (xiao long bao) without expanding the acronym or explaining it because there is a cult around it and people are really into their xlb. Are they the best in the world? Not certain because this has been the only place where I've had soup dumplings that the have actually lived up to their name. I, for one, enjoy them. It took me several tries to figure out the best way to eat them until the bf and I finally watched a video. The food here in general is good. Business is good so the food is always hot and fresh. That being said-you might end up waiting for a table on a Tuesday or Wednesday night. But, service is fast and people move in and out. Out of the Chinese places in the area, this one is my favorite. The space is nice, service is fast, and the food is dependably good. I'm a Cantabrigian and have been to Dumpling House hundreds of times. I'm never let down. However, tonight was extra special. After going with my "business partner" for my weekly dose of soup dumps, my experience was so strong that I was compelled to come straight home and write this review. First of all, the staff as a whole is always on point. I've seen critical reviews of the service here and to that I say, stop picking your feet in Poughkeepsie. Tonight, as always, we were seated quickly by the Madam. The hot tea beat us to our seats, and we immediately asked John Lennon to serve two tall boys of Sapporo. Per usual, my favorite waitress Joey swung by to give us a wink and drop off a free cup of roasted peanuts. I never look at the menu (I mastered it long ago). Tonight we sat down and ordered pork soup dump, spicy lamb wok, chilled pig ears, and a bowl of rice. The timing was perfection, best I've ever seen. The pig ears arrived immediately. If you've never had pig ears before, they are like a slimy cold bacon in a gooey orange spicy sauce. Get ready to make your lips dirty. They are a refreshing way to start a feast on a breezy spring night. The second we finished the pig ears, the dumps plopped down on the table. If you only order one item at Dumpling House, order the pork soup dumps. I don't want to hear any corncobs telling me there are better soup dumps. (edit: ok Dumpling Cafe might be as good but the other entrees don't come close). The spice lamb wok came out last. WOW. All of the wok dishes are fantastic, usually I go with chicken, but tonight was a special night. The lamb is a little pricier, but it is worth the 15 dollars, easily. The meat is tender and succulent, and packs a satisfying kick that is full of flavor. The ratio of vegetables to meat is just right. We washed down this fully-satisfying meal with one more pot of tea (insider tip, leave the top open for an immediate refill). My business partner and I looked at each other, and we didn't need words to communicate that together we had just gone through a spiritual experience. We walked out, said what up to happy cat, grabbed some mints, and immediately started fantasizing about our next trip to the Dumpling House. Went for the first time tonight after having a friend recommend the Chinatown original. Our table ordered both the pork and pork and crabmeat soup dumplings (our whole reason for going) the vegetarian dumplings, and the short ribs. Everything was delicious and served beautifully. The soup dumplings were served with a tangy vinegar sauce that paired better than the typical sweet ginger sauce served with dumplings. While the vegetarian dumplings are billed as having spinach, its more of a rice noodle tofu green mix, but still cooked perfectly. The dough was just the right thickness. Despite it being the first week, the service was great even with a crowd and the food was served very quickly. There was a really pleasant buzz to the place too. We'll definitely go back, as everything ordered at other tables looked so good too, especially the beef scallion pancake roll ups. read more
