This is a story about a hostess named Nikki and mathematics. My husband and I arrived at our reservations time at 6:30 sharp where the restaurant was completely empty. We were escorted to a table in the middle of the restaurant. We asked to be seated by the window where several tables were empty and set for two. Nikki explained that the tables although set for two were actually tables reserved for four people. Not making a fuss we sat down at the table located in the middle of the restaurant surrounded tightly by other vacant tables. While the evening progressed all of the tables that were against the windows became occupied by TWO people even though we were told they were reserved for four. Completely baffled by the audacity at the rudeness of the hostess to honor our request in an empty restaurant for a more desirable table my husband and I became very discouraged. Upon leaving the restaurant after a mediocre, overpriced meal I pointed out to Nikki the problem with her mathematic skills. I attempted to ask why she sat TWO people at a table that we were told was set for FOUR. She was unable to answer any of my questions and quickly retreated to the kitchen. The waiters were very apologetic and said they had nothing to do with sitting people at tables. I am appalled at a restaurants audacity to treat customers with such disrespect. I understand that if the tables were prior reserved then seating us there would have been out of the question. But when we are told a lie and then not to own up to the lie is an entirely different story. Sorry to say this will not be a repeat experience due to rude staff, and mediocre, overpriced food. Over rated! The food is ok and totally over priced. I ordered the house special with black truffle and I got a small plate. It was not filling and it barely had any sauce. They sat us in a corner table and it smelled like old leather. What took me by surprise was how much my plate was?!! I ordered the special and they never told me the price. A few times a month, I like having fancy pasta. We usually dine at il pastaio across the street but thought we would be adventurous and try something different. The food: Burrata- not the best burrata I've had but good enough Endive salad- again, good but not memorable Penne with langostine- skip it. Underwhelming. Almost flavorless pasta. Thin sauce barely coating the pasta and lacked the chewy bite you find with well done al dente pasta. Langostine didn't taste fresh and they were tiny. Btw one reviewer mentioned that their pastas are homemade. Nope. They use dry pasta for this dish and that is a FACT. I barely got through half of this dish and didn't take the rest home. That's saying a lot for someone who loves leftovers!! Lasagna verde- small portion, but decent flavors The service: You would think for being a rather upscale restaurant in Beverly Hills the service would be impeccable. Nope. Not one smile. It was our last night living in LA and my friend wanted to try this place before we moved. There was a party of 6 of us with a reservation. We arrived and were seated right away. Like it was mentioned in other yelp reviews, it's a tight space with customers and staff passing through, swiping off you as they passed by. I was in the men's room which is a single occupancy and had the door locked. As I was using the bathroom, the door opened. I immediately got a fright as I know I locked the door. After they opened it, I locked it again but to my surprise someone else entered. Again I locked it and again someone came barging in. Clearly there is a fault with the locking mechanism. I said it to the host but she just said sorry. Obviously I didn't expect it to be fixed right then and there but it came across like she had zero interest. The table of 6 did not have enough side plates and we had to ask for them. We also had to ask for water (isn't this the basics?) Not all of us received a menu. Some of us shared. Waiter took approx 15 minutes before he came by looking to take an order and that was for food, not drinks. We gave him both (food and drink orders) at the same time because we were ready after that length of time. He didn't ask if we had any questions about the menu....quite frankly had zero interest in his job. It came across that he did it because he had to and not because he wanted to. We ordered our food and the pizzas came first. Although two of us ordered these as our main course, when they came the waiter proceeded to distribute a slice to each of us on the table rather than placing each pizza in front of the person who ordered the pizza. The vent above us was leaking. We just received a sorry from the waiter. This place does not deserve a prime spot in Beverly Hills. The customer service or complete lack of, is appalling. I can't even believe I tipped the waiters. They had zero interest in the customer. When the food came out for everyone else, the waiters were placing the food with the wrong person. I've been trying to come here for a while now. The first time I came they were closed for 3 days due to a holiday weekend! I was not impressed by the staff treatment, you are paying top dollar for quality tiny dishes. It took an entire lunch until our waiter actually spoke to us which is rude. He didn't give us an accurate description of the menu and oversold items so we order more expensive dishes and dessert. Luckily my friend had been here before and we chose two great pasta dishes- the sweet corn agnolotti with marscapone and truffle butter just melts in your mouth ! and the Tortelli of butternut squash, ricotta, amaretto, crispy sage, browned butter was also a great choice. We also had the truffle pizza ( not with shaved truffles) which was also a good choice. Our server recommended the Mille filler and boosted about their pastry chef then the dessert was not available and the profiteroles we got were dry and bland. I ordered pumpkin ravioli and pizza for starters and my kids wanted to repeat it so I asked the waiter to repeat our order, making sure, yet again, there is no truffle oil - i am allergic. The waiter brought a different kind of ravioli and it had truffle oil. I start swelling just by smelling it close to me, so I asked to remove it and bring me the right order. Eve, the waiter was extremely pushy for us to keep it, otherwise he'd have to pay for it. He leaned towards our table and full on bullied us for this choice, not removing the meal for over 5 minutes and making my 7 year old have a pannic attack because he didn't know how to protect mommy. His manner was so aggressive - I have NEVER been treated like this by any man and I was scared to leave the restaurant and bot be in public anymore because he seemed unpredictible. I complained and told about it to several workers, concidered calling the police but my child was in pannic and I was in shock. We waited for 1 hour till the waiters decided to bring the check (yes, they brought the check and there was no apology from either the manager or the abusive waiter). This is first time I decided to write review. I was triggered by recent "event" that took place a couple days ago. I will not bother anyone with details but I will tell you that I learned that management of this restaurants and bakeries are incredibly insensitive to the customers' concerns, in fact they do not care. I would challenge you to try to say that you have had stale apple turnover or that waiter did not know how to divide a bill on three parts. In fact, I would actually advise you never ever to complaint to the manager, because you will get yelled at or even worse, you will get GM who does not want to hear you. This place isn't for everyone but if you are a fan of Georgio's or clean Italian food and your wallet isn't lite, it's a wonderful place for lunch and not bad for dinner, although I definitely prefer lunch here than dinner as the ambiance isn't very charming as it's in an office building so there's only so much you can do. My wife got the artichoke salad and Branzino special today and she devoured both, I started with meatballs and then the Dover sole and followed My wife's lead. We didn't get pasta this time as we both opted for liter options but I've always enjoyed everything I've tried. I write many 5 star reviews because: 1) I view Yelp primarily as a place to share places I love or like very much; I only write 1/2 star reviews when a place is SO offensive (cf Lenox Hill Post Office in NYC), I regard it as a PSA to warn people it is an abomination of the highest order, 2) 5 stars does not connote transcendence but rather perfect and consistent success in meeting the goals it sets for itself. But E Baldi IS transcendent and I am shocked to read the 1 star reviews detailing nightmarish experiences. Now, I did go with a friend who has been eating both here and at Giorgio for the life of those establishments. So we did get a little tasting of the polenta which was better than any version of this I've ever eaten. And the service was of course spectacular because she's been there so many times, her mother a devotee of Giorgio since it opened. So let me kick into ex-debater mode and address the criticisms one by one: 1) Excess staff milling about: This is an odd objection. You can't or at least shouldn't complain about service because there are too many men interfering with your view of the room (in this case a large glass window--a wall essentially--to the kitchen). 2) Portion size: "Half-size portions at full-size prices." My friend and I split three plates: the penne, the ravioli (two kinds so eight small pieces, I think, on each of our plates), and another pasta I don't see on the menu. They graciously split all three and ALL were as good as ANY Italian I've been in either LA or NYC, where I eat a lot of both, along with SB which boasts 7 or 8 fine dining Italian restaurants including Olio e Limone, Julia Child's favorite in town. I am still thinking about the two ravioli, one spicier and one sweeter (butternut squash). The portions were not large but that's because we were splitting the plates and this is not the Olive Garden for God's sake. Nor do we live in Illinois, where a fine dining establishment has to serve large enough portions for people to take home for lunch the next day because in the Midwest people eat a lot. Not a slam, just reality, as anyone who has been to Chicago knows. 3) Allergy issues: I can't speak to this. I have no allergies and don't have special vegan or gluten-free needs. I'm not a fussy eater who creates headaches for chefs. 4) Price: My friend and I had three pastas (all in the 20 range) and a WONDERFUL bottle of Brut Rose for 40 which tasted more like 80. Fabulous and I intend to buy some online if I can find it, as I never like sparkling rose and this was magical. Pre-tip for three plates, a bottle of Brut and a 12 dollar panna cotta which I'm still dreaming about came to 130. TOTALLY fair for the most exquisite Italian meal I've eaten in years. Unless you have a lot of money, this is a special occasion place but you can rack up a 130 bill for two with booze in LA without blinking. The pastas range from 16 to 22 or 23, I think. Obviously if you eat meat or fish at a place like this, the bill will be higher. Also if you're not smart and order wines by the glass in NYC or places which have NYC-city glass pricing, you're going to get stuck with a higher bill. That's not the fault of the restaurant, whose wine list you've presumably read and to which you do not respond rationally. Now, we did get there late: 9:30 on a Thursday. There were plenty of people still eating but I imagine if you go earlier without a reservation, you won't get in, and with a reservation, it might be slow. I can't wait to come back at more budget-friendly lunch. I should have known this place would be fabulous as it is owned by the son of Giorgio's owner, an institution for decades just 5 minutes from my parents in the Palisades. But this is not the most expensive Italian in LA by any means, at least if you stick with pasta. Wilshire is this much in Santa Monica and people have no issue with their prices. The only way you get out unscathed there is by ordering the Wilshire burger for 17 or one of the bizarrely inexpensive flatbreads (or you order two appetizers for 15 rather than an entree). P.S. I can't believe I am gushing about a place in Beverly Hills! While I love the area around Burton Way, Gregory, Charleville, I've always disliked Beverly Hills and considered it the least desirable affluent place on the Westside. Real Housewives of Beverly Hills is NOT fiction. That's how rich Beverly Hills women tend to be. Unlike their Brentwood, North of Montana Santa Monica, Pacific Palisades and Westwood/Holmby Hills cohort in the 1-2%, where stay-at-home moms have impressive educations, cultured backgrounds and potentially great careers they abandoned to raise kids, Beverly Hills has far too many stupid women who married well. I have wonderful friends at every educational level all over the country but there's nothing worse than a dumb AND uneducated woman with money she acquired by marrying a successful man with brains and/or talent. read more

The apple has fallen far, far from the tree. This offering from the Baldi family was lackluster in every respect. First, the layout is terrible. They have crammed so many tables in here that it is impossible to manuever in your seat without bumping into a table behind you. It is incredibly loud. The service was slow and uninspired. I understand the restaurant is new, but it is unacceptable that a table of three finishes a bottle of wine well before the appetizers arrive. The entrees arrived immediately behind the appetizers and we felt very rushed. The caliber of the food was mediocre and, at these prices, terrible. The starters were all rather bland, with the exception of the mussels which were good (but why give you so many? It's a starter.). The famed fried shittake mushrooms were overdone. The entrees were a huge letdown. My langostini was quite good but served alongside it was a dried out slab of sea bass. My mom had the scallopini, and the sauce was honestly reminiscent of Spaghetti-Os. My stepdad's dish was forgettable as well, because none of us can even remember what he ordered. That's how forgettable it was. We didn't order dessert. We wanted out of there. On the way out we mentioned to the hostess that we were unhappy and she blew us off rather curtly. I've read some criticism of her on other websites, but she's not going anywhere: She's Baldi's wife. This is basically a restaurant that caters to the wealthy Beverly Hills crowd who clearly have more money than taste if they keep packing this place each night. Horrible service and the food subpar! I don't even know where to start: I went to this restaurant last Thursday for a friends birthday. We were a group of 7. First of all this place is CRAMMED! Waiters kept knocking us on the head. Second, they asked the birthday girl how she wanted her cake (which we brought in) cut. This was after we told them it was a SURPRISE! Great. When it finally came time to pay the bill, they ran our credit cards until our banks blocked them and we were no longer able to use them and then they told us that their system couldn't handle so many cards (if this is the case, I have no idea how they run a business). After 45 minutes of dealing with the incompetent waitress on how to split the bill, they finally put the amounts on two cards and they tried to write in another $80 tip (on top of the tip we had already given). The next day when we checked our accounts, everyone had been charged twice. Such a pain! I forwarded my complaint to fraud protection! Never going to this restaurant again! If after reading this review and for some reason you still decide to go to this restaurant, make sure you check your bank account the next day. read more

The good: I went with two friends and we sampled the menu pretty liberally. Good napery, prompt service. We ordered the melon and prosciutto appetizer. The prosciutto melted like butter in the mouth, the melon was ripe and perfect. The salami was paper-thin and excellent, the fresh figs were to die for. We agreed that the plate could use a little cheese, but we are all cheese fiends. For entrees, we ordered the special homemade lasagna, the gnocchi with Maine lobster and truffle butter, and the softshell crab risotto. The lasagna had a rich meat ragout and intriguing pockets of ricotta and spinach. The gnocchi was utter perfection, with a generous serving of chopped lobster and the sauce was so delicious I mourned that I had no means to drink it. My dinner companions handed me a straw, telling me I had the means, I merely lacked the wherewithal. Last but not least, the risotto was served with a disconcerting crab shell on the plate, but once its accusing eyes were turned away, it proved marvelous and tender as well. Dessert proved the best of all. We ordered the chocolate crepes, but our crestfallen waiter informed us they were out for the evening. Undaunted, we ordered the butterscotch pudding, the profiteroles tartufi, and the chocolate mousse. All three arrived, accompanied by the lone final crepe the chef had found and sent out with his compliments. The last lonely crepe stole the show with orgasmic ganache waiting within and candied hazelnuts and gelato without. After splitting it equably over moans, we passed the other three around. The pudding was gorgeously presented in a low stemless glass and topped with rich sauce and cream, not too sweet but utterly decadent. The profiteroles were slightly unconvincing, toothsome but tasty with an excellent dark chocolate sauce. The mousse had a dreamlike texture on the tongue and a taste of good bitter chocolate in the throat. My darling friend ordered a single glass of red (can't recall, it was a waiter's recommendation) that proved fragrant and rich as jam. We shared it and I ordered a cup of exquisite coffee to cap off the evening. I was in an irrespressibly good mood when we got the check. The location comes off as swank but unpretentious. We did not feel out of place in t-shirts, and we were treated very well by the wait staff. The prices were very fair for the quality of food served, and stellar for the location. Of course, I say that having been magnificently hosted by a friend, but the listed prices did not make me cringe and think of picking up extra shifts. So not bad. The bad: the street entrance is not an entrance. The parking garage entrance is not an entrance. No idea where the correct entrance is; we never found it. Our repeated entries were not amusing to the hostess. Yes, the hostess is sniffy. I get the feeling she is a tad overworked. She wasn't rude outright, but she was not welcoming. From the other reviews, I had expected as much. It was roasting hot inside, and the patio heaters were in use outside on a night that was probably 78 degrees. This was further exacerbated by the fact that the place is utterly packed with tables with hardly a walking lane left between. As a person in possession of an epic ass, I did not want to get up for fear of capsizing the wineglasses of strangers. I think the staff yells at each other in Italian for authenticity's sake, but it was distracting at times. Overall: Really wonderful, and I would go again. I would recommend it, but go dressed for the heat and ready to have a sense of humor about some things. Other than that, you're in for a stunning menu with stand out dishes and delectable desserts. The portions are reasonably sized, so dessert will be an option for most. Watching dishes go by to be served to other tables, everything looked good. It was a perfect setting for a group of girls. Not too loud. Perfect lighting. Local Beverly Hills joint (an older crowd). Food was pretty decent. Our favorite was clearly the Sweet Corn Agnolotti Mascarpone with truffle butter. Dear oh dear, that was so darn good. It was so good that we ended up ordering 3 orders of it (for a group of 6 girls). But there is one minor negative... The portions were ridiculously small per plate. I mean, even with 3 orders of that sweet corn dish, we each barely had 3-4 bites each. Look, as my friend, Candice, aptly pointed it. This ain't Bucca di Beppo and I'm not comparing it to Cheesecake Factory or anything like that. But I've eaten at many fine dining places, and even based on that, I gotta say, the plates are really, really small. Just saying...be prepared. read more

I came here with a couple of out-of-towners who were overwhelmed by the number of celebrities we saw last night. If you are looking to impress some star struck visitors, this is certainly the place to go. While I enjoyed their company, I might have enjoyed it better at another restaurant. Food: My mixed greens salad was drenched in olive oil. The lack of subtlety was a bit off putting. The gnocchi with lobster was good. Salad I would give a 2 stars and lobster gnocchi a 4 star. We finished with the strawberry - raspberry sorbet and the butterscotch pudding that the waiter was raving about. The sorbet was fine (most likely out of sorbet container from grocery store) and the pudding was better than fine but not as good as I would have expected from our waiter's insistence. Service: Good not great. My biggest problem was that my chair was literally bumped into every minute. I am a rather low maintenance diner - I dont like to get bothered too often - but this was so constant and jarring that I had trouble focusing on my friends! I even glared down a couple of the waiters bumping into my chair, received apologies, then was bumped into again by the same one. No bueno. Decor: Nice enough scene but there were a dozen guys running around servicing everyone so it was hard to take in the room. Great place to see and be seen. There are at least 5 Italian restaurants on Canon. This is the second worst and most expensive. To make things worse, the service is horrible. Apparently the staff here believes that they are something special because they have the privilege of serving the Celebs that frequent the restaurant. There is one word I can use to describe this place perfectly: PRETENTIOUS. 1. Eating space is CRAMPED. The kitchen is MASSIVE. I've had better at almost every single restaurant in the city. Il Fornaio, Caffe Roma, hell even 800 degrees makes a better pizza. It's not like i'm going to a Japanese restaurant and asking for a lasagna...i'm ordering an Italian dish from an Italian restaurant, it should be good. E Baldi breaks through the single chef's reign over the Italian restaurant scene of Beverly Hills. The bright and chic decor invites you to a classy meal with a yet homey feeling. The menu boasts everything from your everyday classics to unique interpretations of dishes not seen in your run-of-the-mill places. I started my meal off with a caraffa of the Sangiovese, but unfortunately when the wine was brought out it had a very stale nose. Alas, despite my mention to the server, I was assured that this is how Sangiovese was suppose to perfume. Perfume of rankness and mildew, instead of cherry, plum, floral undertones, and perhaps a bit of strawberry. Regardless, the very gracious server offered to take it back, but would not open a new bottle. Thus I went with a different varietal, a Brunello, if I'm not mistaken. Which hit all the right notes. The meal consisted of Beef Carpaccio, served under a layer of cheese. I have never seen it presented that way, and although a bit odd, quite tasty. Perhaps it could have used a touch of acid to break through the richness. Burrata with basil pesto and roasted tomatoes, was as good as at any other place, boasting great flavors. However, the Rigatoncini with pancetta, tomato, onion & chili pepper did not excite one bit. Everything competed on the plate and although on paper the dish should have been a hit on the palate it just didn't work. Nor did the Napoleon for the dessert, which may have been the biggest disappointment of the night. Simply underwhelming. And so the overall meal was a far cry from a five star experience, but nevertheless this is a place I will return to for the atmosphere, the carpaccio and some other creations yet to be invented. The restaurant is pretty small, which allows for a rather private, intimate atmosphere contrary to e.g. Madeo. Decor and design are contemporary and I like the fact that it is rather minimalistic with clear lines. The service was excellent, the waiter obviously Italian and presumably a family member. He provided comprehensive information on specials, details of the different meals on the menue and did not hesitate to give recommendations. I had the branzino and as first course a plate with salami, figs, proscutto di parma which was excellent. Had dinner with my fiancé and her mom. I made a reservation earlier that day with no problem. We were running 30 minutes late and I called them on the way which was okay as well. I was surprised given it was a saturday night. I grew up in BH, and have been eating at every other italian spot on Canon since I can remember. E Baldi is the one restaurant I had been meaning to go to, but just hadn't gone until recently. It is a small restaurant, and the the decor isn't as cozy as the other places in the area. The service in the beginning was a bit off. The waiter did not make his first visit until 10 minutes after we had been seated. It did improve as the night progressed. We ordered the angolatti and the pomodoro spaghetti as starters. Both pastas were amazing. The angolatti was so delicate and had an amazing truffle essence. The spaghetti pomodoro was very simple, but had such an amazing home made taste. My lady's mom said it was the best she has ever had. I had the Baked rombo with sauteed artichokes and mushrooms as my main. The flavor of the fish was very delicate and mild, while the mushroom and artichokes added a lot of flavor. Oh my goodness, I have to defend the honor of this place! I have eaten here twice and both times LOVED it. The decor is simple and non-traditional, more like the cafes in Milan near the design center. Sure, it's small and the tables are close together but then again that's cuz the foods so good!!! Anyhow to start off... The Prosecco is the least expensive and a nice way to start off lunch, so I did, and at $8 a glass it was the best way to go, Oh and a very generous pour by the way. I'm over salads, I'm bored with them but E. Baldie has a nifty tasting spring green salad that's perfect. Frisse, avocados and a light lemon dressing, I really loved it, maybe because of the hidden crunch factor celery and some other hidden veggie (was it snow peas?) gave it oomph. It was more on the nouvelle cuisine side so I liked it. In general I like clean, bright flavors. Next I perused the menu the meat options look fantastic but a lunch special caught my eye...pumpkin ravioli, I had to do it. Now let me say it again, I love anything that involves a pocket, a won ton, and puff pastry, generally anything stuffed inside a shell or casing, I'm for it. ESPECIALLY ravioli, which last time I was in Northern Italy (where my family lives part of the year) I ate every single day, for two weeks. So maybe I know a little something about it.... The ravioli here is wonderful, light and fluffy is the puree inside, and the skin is thin and almost see-thru, lovely!!!! My only side note is, its a very butter driven dish, I think the ravioli is flavor enough that it could use half the butter in the sage dressing on top of it and still be a true dish. Then the desserts, I couldn't decide, it was like " Where do I begin??" I went for the chocolate plate. Chocolate flourless cake, hazelnut ice cream and more bits of chocolate frippery.... divine! The service was fast; it was less than 3 minutes from our order that I had my drink and salad for in hand. The staff was attentive and helpful. As far as the hostess, my mother was fascinated by her, her long hair and her chic dress, the designer must have shoes, so she had to go chat her up. It turns out that she is the wife of the chef and was formally a ballerina. So perhaps folks are zoning in on that stoic aloofness that is part of the discipline of being a prima ballerina and a chic euro-woman. Personally, I thought she was quite nice. Hmmm, guess I had a very different experience then the other yelpers.....so go here and and enjoy the wonderful food or don't and it will be easier me me to get a table! read more

Went here for dinner with a few friends last night, and prior to arriving, I read the reviews on yelp. I was surprised because I had been here before and had a great meal and good service, at least I don't remember it being poor. The restaurant was full, and the tables were close. Delicious! Everything I had was equally good but the wine was outrageously priced. I ordered the: gnocchi with Maine lobster, veal saltimbocca, lasagna with bechamel sauce, and tiramisu. The portions were appropriately sized. Small by American standards but perfect if you don't want to feel super stuffed after the meal. The tiramisu was perfect for two people and not overly sweet. I'd love to go back and try some of the fish offered as it all looked wonderful. Bring $8 for valet parking after 6PM. read more

Very bad experience. The food took forever to come. The tuna tartar was the worst one I have ever tried, definitely not worth $35 dollars... service was so so. Nobody cleaned the table nor took dirty plates. We had to ask them. I asked if the manager is there, they told me the owner was actually at the restaurant but he never came. I assume the server didn't tell him. Not sure. Either way I was very disappointed. I was so excited to try their food and it was a complete fail. read more

If you are looking for half-sized portions of Italian food at full-sized prices in Beverly Hills, then E. Baldi on N. Canon Drive is the restaurant for you. They do not have a liquor license but do have the highest priced wines by the glass that I have ever seen. Enjoy ! Don't say that you were not warned.
