Absolutely amazing experience! This place was truly special and exceeded my expectations. The food was incredible, the atmosphere was beautiful, and it was definitely one of those experiences worth having when visiting Los Angeles. I've been to Il Pastaio quite a few times already and I always find it to be just okay. The pastas are just okay, I usually get the justin bieber and the truffle pasta. I think it's a bit tooooo expensive for what it is, but it's in Beverly Hills so I guess it makes sense. Workers are friendly and if you don't want to pay for valet, you can park at one of the parking structures nearby. read more

Lured by the promise of simplicity from the chef's video advertisement, I was strangely disappointed when my squid ink pasta showed up tasting like chicken noodle soup in a can. Very bouillon cube-esque, as if the noodles were boiled in leftover chicken noodle soup. The appetizers, salad and dessert, however, were fine. We ordered: Grigliata Di Verdure, Calamari Fritti, Carpaccio Di Bue & Tricolore. For dessert: Tiramisu and basically, banana cream pie.   For an entrée, one of us ordered an oddly flavorless scoglio.  I myself ordered the risotto nero, but substituted it with noodles which was maybe why it tasted like chicken noodle?  I have no idea.  My friend ordered the pollo alla milanese which he said was good.  It was essentially fried chicken... I did appreciate them giving us a table when they were booked up, and the restaurant itself is beautiful, in a beautiful location, with the opportunity for watching beautiful people, but beyond this... The noise level was so loud it made for challenging table conversation, and as our voices became elevated over the throng of people, I couldn't help but wonder if it would have just been better to go to Buca di Peppo at CityWalk. The noise, added to the amount of items on the menu, made deciding on food, strangely overwhelming. Flagging down staff for assistance was virtually impossible. There were a few moments I almost felt like getting up and going to the kitchen myself so I wouldn't have to ask so many times for the same thing. I was a server too in my day, and I know what busy looks like. However, I also know what good service is. For all the lights and glamour, the food was utterly forgettable. One realizes it's Beverly Hills but seriously. If guests who are not just celebrities, foreign diplomats or large groups are valued as well, the restaurant should take heed. I suggest the "simplicity" thought process be reapplied to the menu items in terms of options and descriptions, or organization. Make more suggestions on your menu, highlight the favorites, and if there aren't any, then develop some. If you're doing an $85 option with appetizer, entrée and dessert, for goodness sake, just do a prix fixe that guests can order with confidence, knowing the chef has chosen something that new and old alike will actually return for. Unless this is just designed as a tourist spot, make the menu as alluring as the marketing video you paid for. I know I do not have to go to NYC or Italy to find decent Italian food. The fact that I liked my servers better in Paris than in this restaurant, speaks volumes. Afterwards, we joked that we would have been better to go to the local pizzeria that was a block away. It would have been more quiet and the service more pleasant. Regret spending my birthday in this particular restaurant, but live and learn. Giving two stars because there is nothing we had that we would want to come back for. read more

Our first time eating at Il Pastaio, though we've eaten at any number of other restaurants in the Drago universe and always have a good meal. Like all the other D-family outposts, Il Pastaio is busy and buzzy, well organized by a friendly staff, and utterly professional in all respects. The carefully manicured decor is low-key elegant on the inside, but the bulk of the seating here is outside, with tables lining both sides of the corner property, creating the feel of a cafe in Paris or Rome. Our own waiter was friendly as could be, though occasionally a bit more MIA than I would have liked. Little extra requests like butter for the bread or a 2nd soft drink were left unanswered for a bit. Yes, it was a busy Sunday dinner rush, so I'm not really complaining, but it was a tad frustrating. We opted out of starters because we'd seen a dessert we wanted to order, so we went straight for entrees: Garganelli with Broccoli and Sausage for me, and the Tortelloni Di Zucca for my wife. My garganelli was perfectly cooked, with a nice, very slight al dente bite; the sausage had a nice hit of heat, though the broccoli was overdone and a bit mushy. The sauce of garlic and oil was not as flavor-forward as I've had in the past with other iterations of this dish. So, while I didn't dislike my meal, it was definitely underwhelming. My wife's Tortelloni was, to my mind, more successful. Again, the pasta was fresh and nicely cooked, but here the filling was more interestingly flavored, with the pumpkin and ricotta blend being more savory than sweet (a nice change), and the sauce of butter & sage adding an extra level of savory richness. The aforementioned dessert -- the daily special of Orange Ricotta Cheesecake -- was light and very subtly flavored, without being too sweet. It was enjoyable, but could have used, again, a more robust flavor profile, be it the citrus or the cheese... it was just, in the end, a bit too mild. Overall, we were surprised, as the menu is similar to other Drago locations, but we're used to being served meals that are much more memorably flavored. That said, while the food was essentially fine, I wouldn't race back for another meal at this particular venue. read more

There are restaurants in all the big cities in which I have lived that represent longevity, image-power, popularity, and tradition. And, there is usually a good reason for their stardom. While I am a big fan of evolved dishes that are novel and fresh, I have always loved old fashioned, genuine (as in the way they are made in the Old Country) Italian food. Il Pastaio does not disappoint in that respect. I have spent enough time all over Italy, and am part Italian myself, to judge this place a must-try in Los Angeles. We rarely venture into Beverly Hills given what used to be a difficult parking situation. Not with Il Pastaio -- there is free public garage parking almost across the street. If you visit on a Sunday afternoon, you will find a spot effortlessly and you will avoid the crowds. That said, when we arrived around 1:30, Il Pastaio was packed, inside and out. Thankfully we had a reservation and they ushered us to the perfect table, inside (where I preferred to be on a sunny, cool but windy day), next to a bright (and spotless) window. I think there are people who prefer to be on the sidewalk in BH, so they can look for the cognoscenti and affluenti, LOL, but, I don't need to do that -- seen and been seen enough in my long life! Again, I can happily report, Il Pastaio reminds me of all the fine, small, and exquisite restaurants I frequented in Rome, Florence, and Milan, to name the biggies. The menu is extensive, and even though I had studied it beforehand on their website, it took me at least ten minutes to narrow down all the wonderful vegetarian dishes from which to choose. My photos show which were the lucky winners. There are meat dishes in abundance but, here's the open secret, Italians themselves are not avid meat eaters and all the portions abroad are small, hence multiple courses and few people eat too much at a meal. Lunch and dinner are also leisurely over there because Europeans see a meal as an event, not a blip in their day. The service was flawless, with our Italian waiter, Filippo, treating us as if we were Re Umberto and Regina Margherita. The table was very pretty and there was bespoke olive oil and vinegar ready for dipping the homemade bread that is served steaming in a napkined basket. I could smell it through the entire meal. Even the water came from Italy. Each course we chose came to the table at the perfect temperature, beautifully plated, and the previous were whisked away efficiently as soon as we were finished, as if by magic. The food here is excellent; quality Italian food with good portions and great flavor. The ambiance is nice even the outdoors is pretty and they have heat lamps to take out the chill. My reason for the three stars was the service. We did choose a later reservation time but I wish they just didn't have the reservation if they don't want to be there late. It took 25 minutes after us sitting for a server to ask what we wanted to drink. It was not busy maybe three other tables outdoor only the inside was closed. When our waiter was at the table he was annoyed at our questions regarding the tasting menu. It really made us feel awkward and dampered our whole experience which was really unfortunate because we loved the food and it was our last night in LA. I'd say make an earlier reservation maybe to receive better service. Also the espresso martini was disappointing it had ice and was very watered down. Came here for a friends birthday. In terms of ambience, it's very charming and fancy. A great place for pictures on a dinner night. The service... wasn't really there. It took an hour for our waiter to take our order and even then trying to get someone's attention took a lot of effort. After we ordered it took a long time to get our food. We were sat right in the middle of the inside restaurant so it's not like we were in a hidden area. We were there till closing because of how long we had to wait. It's really disappointing because I was looking forward to this place. However the food is tasty. I wouldn't say amazing, but it's well prepared pasta. A bunch of us got the "Justin Bieber Pasta" basically the one he orders when he comes here so they named it after him. It's okay, more on the salty and bitter side. I don't think we would order it again. Their truffle pasta is great though. It was done very well, and the pasta itself felt like such high quality. You'll see all the people on the sidewalk waiting for their table. I love the pastas and the service is stellar. This is the kind of place where everyone in our party orders something different and we all get to try each other's dish. We've always sat outside which is great because you can people watch. If it's cold, they have heaters available. The celebs love this place, too, but you may never see them as they get a special room inside, away from the prying eyes of the public. Truly in the top 5 pastas I've ever consumed! The cheese wheel pasta is such a treat but never has it been this good anywhere else! The sheer amount of truffles they shaved on top was amazing and every single bite was finished. My husband ordered the Justin Bieber pasta and he loved it. Neither of our dishes needed any additional seasoning and that's a tough feat typically for me with pastas being chronically under seasoned. The service was 4/5 but they were pretty busy. Their paccheri in pink sauce, or as it's on the menu, the " Justin Bieber pasta," was good, but not something I wouldn't be able to make after a quick trip down the street to Eataly. My veal scallopini was overcooked and somewhat dry, but the flavors around it and the added truffle still made it acceptable. The desserts will satisfy your sweet tooth. The panna cotta and bread pudding are both superb. I had the time of my life pairing my bread pudding with some calvados. Il Pastaio is a BH staple. It's been a hotspot for a few decades and is worth trying for the overall experience. Is there better Italian in the city? It doesn't quite hit grandma's cooking level, but close enough for a mainstream establishment that pumps thousands of these a day. Prices have gone up in recent years but all things considered it's still definitely cheaper than what you'd expect to pay in this area. You are by no means getting the deal of the century but you aren't getting completely ripped off either. While this won't beat the Italian grandma's cooking and won't be the cheapest deal, Il Pastaio delivers on quality Italian food, relatively good value for the area, amazing service, and a lovely atmosphere in the heart of Beverly Hills. Since more years than I can remember, the Il Pastaio is one of the busiest places in Beverly Hills. Whenever we passed it, there were people waiting to be seated. Amazingly all our friends were "not so happy" - so we have never been - until yesterday. We had been to an afternoon party and thought we close a nice day with a nice dinner. We did not have a reservation, but the two of us were promised to be seated within minutes - and were. So generally: thumbs up. However "our table" as well as others were ready to be seated when we arrived already. I would even go as far as to say that all of the people waiting on the street could have been sat immediately. I know it's a tad nasty: but I was lead to believe that it's party of their spiel to show how desirable they are by letting people wait. Then: the food. Overall: just OK, not great. I was really excited to try if you see he mouthwatering photos online it looks great, but none of our dishes did it for us. We were hoping for authentic, crave-worthy Italian pasta, but ultimately left feeling underwhelmed. All in all - three stars - minus one for the services. The server decided to start us up with a bottle of sparking water - fine, we would have ordered one anyway. No ask for wine or anything else - not even a wine list. And once we were done with our entrees the waiter cleared our table ... and brought the check. We went to Salt & Straw for desert then. So sorry, two stars out of five only - could've been better pretty much says it. Always a great experience here. I have friends who frequent this place quite regularly and are regulars at the restaurant so I've been fortunate to try items on the menu that they recommend. Always enjoy this place! Make sure to make a reservation as they are a very busy restaurant. The pasta is home made so you won't be let down on any of their pasta dishes. Their calamari is stupendous. The prosciutto with the gorgonzola cheese, walnuts, topped with fresh Pears is DELICIOUS. Tip: Add the Burrata. ;) The Linguine con Crustacea is my fav pasta on the menu. It has Lobster and Crab meat and it is absolutely divine. If you are coming here more than once I recommend you try the famous Paccheri Alla Justin Believer. I think you know why the dish is famous. You have to try at least once! Overall, I had a good but not great experience here with my family. We were seated in an outdoor section. We were a little cold at first, but they turned on the heat lamp which helped warm it up. Outside ended up being nice because of how crowded the whole place was. The place was swamped, so our service was good, but it did take a while for food to come out and for things like water to be refilled. Food was pretty good, but a little bland. I had one of the homemade pastas with mushrooms and asparagus and we all shared some meatballs and risotto. Good pasta, but I've had better around LA. read more

Our waiter was rarely around, and it was difficult to get assistance throughout the meal. The food was also a letdown. Several dishes were extremely salty, and considering the high prices, I expected much better quality and attention to detail. To make matters worse, because of the size of our party, we ended up paying a $90 tip despite the poor service experience. Overall, the value simply wasn't there. It was bustling with activity from talent agents doing deals to wealthy elites catching a bite and even those impeccably dressed debutants showing the latest in fall ware. Despite the side show, the food was just simply incredible. The rigatoni in a pink rose sauce and imported cheeses was amazing. Apparently it's Justin Bieber's favorite dish. Met with an old friend for lunch and she wanted to come here, she knows the area well and I pretty much eat anything so my only request was we meet somewhere we wouldn't have to wait at 11:45am on Saturday. Il Pastaio has been around for 29 years and specializes in house made pasta and Sicilian style cuisine, they are somewhat of an institution and are frequented by celebrities, they even have a pasta named after Justin Bieber. It's good for people watching and there are some very "Beverly hills" people that we saw dining here. It's in a very popular area but there is a public parking structure a couple blocks down you can park at. Interior is well done with plenty of natural light and plants inside, the mirrors on the walls also give it a much more spacious feel. Service was excellent, very charming old-school staff still dressed neatly like your kind old uncle. Negroni: fantastic here, I really shouldn't have had 2 but it was so well made I had to do it. Bread: an odd thing to call out but the free bread with olive oil and balsamic vinegar were delicious. The bread was warm when served and so good dipped in the olive oil mix. Risotto Nero: Carnaroli Rice with Calamari, Shrimp, Scallops and Squid Ink Sauce . Comes pitch, pitch black with no color on the plate. Looked unappetizing and I expected some kind of garnish to give it a brighter look but it tastes great, like a piece of the Mediterranean Sea. read more
