There are restaurants in all the big cities in which I have lived that represent longevity, image-power, popularity, and tradition. And, there is usually a good reason for their stardom. While I am a big fan of evolved dishes that are novel and fresh, I have always loved old fashioned, genuine (as in the way they are made in the Old Country) Italian food. Il Pastaio does not disappoint in that respect. I have spent enough time all over Italy, and am part Italian myself, to judge this place a must-try in Los Angeles. We rarely venture into Beverly Hills given what used to be a difficult parking situation. Not with Il Pastaio -- there is free public garage parking almost across the street. If you visit on a Sunday afternoon, you will find a spot effortlessly and you will avoid the crowds. That said, when we arrived around 1:30, Il Pastaio was packed, inside and out. Thankfully we had a reservation and they ushered us to the perfect table, inside (where I preferred to be on a sunny, cool but windy day), next to a bright (and spotless) window. I think there are people who prefer to be on the sidewalk in BH, so they can look for the cognoscenti and affluenti, LOL, but, I don't need to do that -- seen and been seen enough in my long life! Our table was perfect. View my photos. I love the vibe inside. Again, I can happily report, Il Pastaio reminds me of all the fine, small, and exquisite restaurants I frequented in Rome, Florence, and Milan, to name the biggies. The menu is extensive, and even though I had studied it beforehand on their website, it took me at least ten minutes to narrow down all the wonderful vegetarian dishes from which to choose. My photos show which were the lucky winners. There are meat dishes in abundance but, here's the open secret, Italians themselves are not avid meat eaters and all the portions abroad are small, hence multiple courses and few people eat too much at a meal. Lunch and dinner are also leisurely over there because Europeans see a meal as an event, not a blip in their day. The service was flawless, with our Italian waiter, Filippo, treating us as if we were Re Umberto and Regina Margherita. The table was very pretty and there was bespoke olive oil and vinegar ready for dipping the homemade bread that is served steaming in a napkined basket. I could smell it through the entire meal. Even the water came from Italy. Each course we chose came to the table at the perfect temperature, beautifully plated, and the previous were whisked away efficiently as soon as we were finished, as if by magic. The food here is excellent; quality Italian food with good portions and great flavor. The ambiance is nice even the outdoors is pretty and they have heat lamps to take out the chill. My reason for the three stars was the service. We did choose a later reservation time but I wish they just didn't have the reservation if they don't want to be there late. It took 25 minutes after us sitting for a server to ask what we wanted to drink. It was not busy maybe three other tables outdoor only the inside was closed. When our waiter was at the table he was annoyed at our questions regarding the tasting menu. It really made us feel awkward and dampered our whole experience which was really unfortunate because we loved the food and it was our last night in LA. I'd say make an earlier reservation maybe to receive better service. Also the espresso martini was disappointing it had ice and was very watered down. So right off the bat, we got a nice outdoor seat, and the place was pretty cute, but not as high class as I was expecting it to be but idk. The waiter was really nice and we got our drinks out to us Really fast. The charcuterie board was absolutely amazing. It looks as good as it tastes like wowwwww it was amazing absolutely amazing. However our actual pastas did take a long time to come out honestly and they were good I won't say it was bad. The Justin Bieber pasta was really good, but I felt like the sauce was kind of missing something maybe like a spice or something like that and the thickness of the dough kind of overpowered the actual taste. I got the Bolognese and it was pretty good. You'll see all the people on the sidewalk waiting for their table. I love the pastas and the service is stellar. This is the kind of place where everyone in our party orders something different and we all get to try each other's dish. We've always sat outside which is great because you can people watch. If it's cold, they have heaters available. The celebs love this place, too, but you may never see them as they get a special room inside, away from the prying eyes of the public. Came here for a friends birthday. In terms of ambience, it's very charming and fancy. A great place for pictures on a dinner night. The service... wasn't really there. It took an hour for our waiter to take our order and even then trying to get someone's attention took a lot of effort. After we ordered it took a long time to get our food. We were sat right in the middle of the inside restaurant so it's not like we were in a hidden area. We were there till closing because of how long we had to wait. It's really disappointing because I was looking forward to this place. However the food is tasty. I wouldn't say amazing, but it's well prepared pasta. A bunch of us got the "Justin Bieber Pasta" basically the one he orders when he comes here so they named it after him. It's okay, more on the salty and bitter side. I don't think we would order it again. Their truffle pasta is great though. It was done very well, and the pasta itself felt like such high quality. Truly in the top 5 pastas I've ever consumed! The cheese wheel pasta is such a treat but never has it been this good anywhere else! The sheer amount of truffles they shaved on top was amazing and every single bite was finished. My husband ordered the Justin Bieber pasta and he loved it. Neither of our dishes needed any additional seasoning and that's a tough feat typically for me with pastas being chronically under seasoned. The service was 4/5 but they were pretty busy. This is a very regarded spot which we finally got to try out on date night. We went on a Wednesday evening and it was quite active. Made a reservation same day and sat outside. My girlfriend got the rigatoni and I ordered the bolognese. They were both very very delicious and piping hot when served. Great quality food. We got a few mocktails as well and it was great. No dessert this time. The price for the two of us wasn't too shabby and the service was prompt and respectful. Although, I can imagine the bill getting pretty steep and quick (ahem Beverly Hills). Since more years than I can remember, the Il Pastaio is one of the busiest places in Beverly Hills. Whenever we passed it, there were people waiting to be seated. Amazingly all our friends were "not so happy" - so we have never been - until yesterday. We had been to an afternoon party and thought we close a nice day with a nice dinner. We did not have a reservation, but the two of us were promised to be seated within minutes - and were. So generally: thumbs up. However "our table" as well as others were ready to be seated when we arrived already. I would even go as far as to say that all of the people waiting on the street could have been sat immediately. I know it's a tad nasty: but I was lead to believe that it's party of their spiel to show how desirable they are by letting people wait. Then: the food. Overall: just OK, not great. I was really excited to try if you see he mouthwatering photos online it looks great, but none of our dishes did it for us. We were hoping for authentic, crave-worthy Italian pasta, but ultimately left feeling underwhelmed. All in all - three stars - minus one for the services. The server decided to start us up with a bottle of sparking water - fine, we would have ordered one anyway. No ask for wine or anything else - not even a wine list. And once we were done with our entrees the waiter cleared our table ... and brought the check. We went to Salt & Straw for desert then. So sorry, two stars out of five only - could've been better pretty much says it. Their calamari is stupendous. The prosciutto with the gorgonzola cheese, walnuts, topped with fresh Pears is DELICIOUS. Their paccheri in pink sauce, or as it's on the menu, the " Justin Bieber pasta," was good, but not something I wouldn't be able to make after a quick trip down the street to Eataly. My veal scallopini was overcooked and somewhat dry, but the flavors around it and the added truffle still made it acceptable. The desserts will satisfy your sweet tooth. The panna cotta and bread pudding are both superb. I had the time of my life pairing my bread pudding with some calvados. Il Pastaio is a BH staple. It's been a hotspot for a few decades and is worth trying for the overall experience. Is there better Italian in the city? Met with an old friend for lunch and she wanted to come here, she knows the area well and I pretty much eat anything so my only request was we meet somewhere we wouldn't have to wait at 11:45am on Saturday. Il Pastaio has been around for 29 years and specializes in house made pasta and Sicilian style cuisine, they are somewhat of an institution and are frequented by celebrities, they even have a pasta named after Justin Bieber. It's good for people watching and there are some very "Beverly hills" people that we saw dining here. It's in a very popular area but there is a public parking structure a couple blocks down you can park at. Interior is well done with plenty of natural light and plants inside, the mirrors on the walls also give it a much more spacious feel. Service was excellent, very charming old-school staff still dressed neatly like your kind old uncle. Negroni: fantastic here, I really shouldn't have had 2 but it was so well made I had to do it. Bread: an odd thing to call out but the free bread with olive oil and balsamic vinegar were delicious. The bread was warm when served and so good dipped in the olive oil mix. Risotto Nero: Carnaroli Rice with Calamari, Shrimp, Scallops and Squid Ink Sauce . Comes pitch, pitch black with no color on the plate. OMG, I'm still smiling about the incredible dinner I had with friends last Sunday. While the food at this spot is absolutely top-tier, the real star of the show was our Italian server; no joke, he gave us the best service I think I've ever had. Hands-down. From the moment we sat down, he made us feel like we were the only table in the restaurant. We were totally lost looking at the wine list, and instead of just pointing at the most expensive bottle, he actually walked us through it. You could tell he was genuinely passionate and knew his stuff, he explained where the wines were from and why they'd go with our food. And he was totally right! The best part was you hardly noticed him, but everything was always perfect. Our glasses were magically full, he checked on us at just the right times, and he was so funny and charming. His excitement was actually infectious! You could tell he loved his job, and he turned a great dinner into a truly special night. The food was spectacular. We started with the arancini, which were crispy, cheesy, and heavenly. Cacio e pepe was a masterclass in simplicity: perfectly al dente pasta in a sharp, peppery sauce. I also snuck a bite of my friend's agnolotti, and the filling was so rich and delicate. Every dish was a hit! The place itself has a great vibe, nice and lively but you can still hear your friends.
