Their slogan really says it all: strong coffee, good food. This is a solid little neighborhood cafe conveniently located in an area where there aren't many other options super close by. It's one of only a few establishments I can walk to in under ten minutes so I am grateful Earthly Coffee is around whenever I need a quick sandwich or coffee. Unintelligent fools running this place, who obviously pick and choose WHO walks out of there with a purchase. After my experience here I have absolutely no interest in returning and will let people know to stay away from this place. Now suppose a customer purchases a $5 cup of coffee, uses shop utilities such as table, chair, and Wi-Fi. This visit lasts approximately an hour there. The shop makes less than ten cents per minute for this visit. My experience? A couple of relatives and I came here today with the intention of spending about $25 on drinks and a sandwhich. We had no intention of staying more than 30 minutes. Suppose we stayed for exactly a half hour, then the shop would've made about 83 cents per minute. I understand many places have policies about bringing food from other places, but just as there can always be exceptions made (especially if business is slow), there are also nicer ways of saying things. So my little sis sat on the table outside of the shop to eat the food I got her before coming here. Before I could even finish my order we were rudely told that no outside food was allowed on HIS TABLES and that he wanted to let me know before a transaction was made in case there was a problem with that. HA! As if doing me a favor. Of course we left, and of course, his amazing magical table remained profitless. read more

Alrighty kids, put on your thinking caps and imagine this is the script for a dated educational video on VHS that you might have watched in the 6th grade with one of those crisp low-tone narrators speaking. ------ According to evolutionary theory, many creatures, as time goes on and especially as their populations increase in size, diversify to the point where they may in fact become different species altogether. Take for example the cafe. Once, in more primitive times, cafe's were made up of a few key characteristics: bitter middle-aged waitresses, basic breakfast foods, and stale coffee. These cafe's were fairly successful in surviving, attracting people to their offerings where they would stay briefly for face to face conversations over food and then head home shortly thereafter. Then, in the 90's, a mutation occurred, and a new form of cafe species began to emerge that was better suited for the modern environment. Soon the species Starbucks (Half Caff No Foam Dirty Chai Latte-itus) became the dominant species on the great cafe plains by attracting people to their sweet sweet coffee nectar. To keep people around longer, they abandoned their booths for simple tables and chairs and more expansive spaces. The bitter waitress turned into young baristas with musical "side-projects" that would never make it to the light of day, but only because "the mainstream doesn't understand them" (no one does). Furthermore, the people attracted to the cafes changed as well - instead of heading home, people would linger. The act of appearing to be writing a novel became as valuable as actually completing a novel. Checking Facebook for hours on end gained an heir of purpose that might have been confused for lonely escapism if it were confined to a bedroom (now it's taking in the ambience). Before long, people began acquiring specific preferences for certain cafes over others. Some people preferred the wifi of a place more than anything, and buy hardly any coffee or food, often insisting on tea. You may recognize these people from the primitive times, they are simply the next generation of people who just order fries to continue sitting at a Denny's booth at 12:00am, (their species remains unchanged over time - they are the resilient cockroaches of the cafe ecosystem). Others wanted only the best coffee, the most pristine environment, and would not eat anything that wasn't handcrafted, but would eat everything that was (handcrafted organic Twinkies anyone?). Ambience is of vital importance here as well ("I only drink out of mason jars"). Finally the cafes have adapted into the highly specialized species we see in this area today: There is the Gaylorde's Expresso (Table Store Vomited On Grandmas Extensive Tea Collection-itas). Which is open till 12:00am and caters to the wifi fiends. A good place you want to buy a coffee and just grind away at a project or a book. The sea of chairs and tables and the selection of teas are trademarks that this species is highly adapted towards the wifi fiends. There is Arbor Cafe (Yeah I'll Get You Coffee But Know I'm Doing You A Favor Cuz I'm Awesome This Coffee Is Awesome And Temescal Is Awesome - icus). For those who want ambience and a tiny bit of superior flair with Bicycle coffee and expensive prices (and they're cash only! how retro is that!) - this is your spot. Kidding aside, It's definitely got a nice vibe and big windows and I enjoy meeting friends there from time to time. Then there is Earthly Cafe (Bacon Jam In My Face And Dogs Circling My Feet-atila). This place an exceptionally different and rare species that sometimes confuses the people initially attracted to it. They're not use to the cafe's whose main appeal and attraction is the community and homegrown nature of the place, straightforward food and good coffee. ------- At Earthly Cafe, the person taking your order is probably an owner or someone close to them. The customers that frequent here aren't just customers, they're part of the community. It's harder to be anonymous here. It's harder to slide in neatly and just be ignored, because there are people who are actually engaged, who actually want to get to know you and give a damn if they see you again. So be warned, you may actually have a conversation with the owners when you come here, you might have a chat with other people in line, and you might be approached by a friendly dog or two. In short, I go to Earthly for good food (bacon jam, oh yes) and good coffee, but I stay and I keep coming back, for the community. read more

This establishment should not be serving food. If I could give half a star, or actually ZERO STARS, I would! I'm sad to say it, but this was pretty much the worst food I've ever purchased. The customer service is as pitiful as the food, and the same can be said for the overall hygiene of the place and the people who work there. The grumpy, sloppily-dressed man who runs the register is also the "cook". He does both of these things without washing his hands or using appropriate food service gloves for each job. Our breakfast plate consisted of uncooked potatoes on a bed of wilted, bagged spinach, microwaved scrambled egg, and a very sad salsa that barely managed to mask the flavorless food. When I presented the "cook"/cashier with the plate of raw potatoes, all he could offer was a half-assed "sorry 'bout that". I am disgusted with this place and will never recommend it or return. Hopefully this business can clean up their act because as it stands, they are just robbing people of their money and ruining their appetites. read more

As an insurance adjuster it is hard to find a one stop spot that fulfills all my needs (Lunch, Coffee, electrical Outlet, restroom) this place does that for me! Every time I stop by the body shop next to this place I come grab a Pastrami on Rye with Chipotle sauce & a Breve made the owners way. Staff is always accommodating and welcoming! I have passed this place for years, and now officially regret that I haven't stopped in sooner. A friend promised a high order of one of the best breakfast burritos ever. I didn't believe him, because I have heard those words followed with something that is small, dry and lacking flavor. Dubious as I was, I was excited to have finally walked into this cafe. Nothing about the place screams excellence, so don't be thrown off as you walk in. But as I sat and ate I watched people come in and be greeted by name with sincere warmth, jokes, and their usual orders known. It has the feeling of a small ma and pa place, because that is exactly what it is. Just a little place in Oakland that is trying to make it. We had two breakfast burritos with ham, and two large iced coffees for just over 20 bones. The burritos are of hearty portions, in a Chipotle or tomato tortilla, crispy potato squares, cheese, egg, spinach and a Chipotle sour cream. The burrito holds together, has lots of flavor and is moist but not sopping. Hits all my key points for a solid breakfast burrito. To top it off they have some exciting hot sauces, I used a habanero grapefruit pulp hot sauce. Don't hesitate, go and try them out! read more

I need to come back here because I think the day I went was just an off day. The owner is super friendly and has a great personality! Unfortunately, I came to the cafe at about 3pm and they closed at 4pm...which is way too early in terms of finding a cafe in my neighborhood to just sit and do work at! I ordered a chai latte, which was so overly sweet ... even after all the ice melted, I still felt like it was overly sugary. It was also very uncomfortably hot and stuffy the day that I went, so I definitely did not have that good of an experience. I like this place for several reasons, but the main reason is the food, which is shockingly good for how simple the menu looks. I'm tempted to not even talk about the tuna salad because when I went in today they were sold out. But it IS that good. I tried the ham and cheese instead, which is served on a roll with caramelized onions, bell peppers, and spicy chipotle sauce, and prompted this review. I've also had the grilled chicken wrap, which is delicious and very well portioned. Their coffee, mocha, espresso, and chai are consistently good, they'll ice anything, they never judge me for asking for three extra shots, and they're always super nice even when you can tell it's been a long day. They close at 3, which is not ideal, but their main business is catering breakfast and lunch to the Oakland Children's Hospital (lucky staff!), so I understand.
