The hot pot just wasn't enjoyable, and it wasn't the childhood memory I had of this place. I make better hot pot at home. I wish this place did better. Everything here was nicely done and they have something to satisfy everyone across the whole spectrum of Chinese food, from Dim Sum, to Sesame Chicken, to... spaghetti and meatballs... But hey. Who wouldn't want some garlic bread to go with their fried taro balls? Speaking of fried taro balls, they didn't have any when I looked, and when I asked, they brought some out to me. My friends and I decided to go to dim sum and I was so excited as I haven't gone in ages. I suggested East and by the end of the meal, I was surely ashamed and disappointed that I did. First of all, we were already given attitudes for not speaking Chinese. What's even more frustrating is that the wait staff would continue to speak to us in Chinese even though we clearly do not understand it. There were a few carts that went around and we were able to pick a few favorite dishes. We got a plate of baby clams which my friend and I were eager to try. They were cold. They must have been sitting out for a long time. Eventually it seemed the same 2 or 3 carts went around with the same food no one wanted to choose. It got to the point where my friends and I put our chopsticks down and we were not even eating for at least 20 minutes. Frustrated and still a little hungry, we finally found someone to get us the check. When I got the check, I noticed that they charged us for tea. What Asian establishment charges for TEA?! Lastly, we went to the front cashier to pay. She did not say a word to us. Not even a thank you. I have been to this restaurant in the past with my family and I have never received such poor customer service. I left feeling very dissatisfied and I shall not be returning. read more

It's the annual semi-extended family buffet brunch. Stereotypically, when this is arranged by Asian parents, the agenda is as follows: "Don't eat before the buffet! Plenty of opportunity when we arrive! Think about what you want to eat!! Why would you eat fried rice at a buffet?!? Eat as much as you can - make sure it was worth the $8-10! We only have an hour and a half - get ready!!!" So compounded with the frustration of boredom, all you find yourself doing is eating. However, that's a very liberal interpretation of the word "eating." It's more like a compulsion to congest your digestive system, testing the laws of physics... Another thing is that everyone else is preoccupied with this, that you feel the need to walk around to escape the mind-numbingness and to expedite the food-breaking-downness. But there is no where else to walk to...but towards the food. At East Buffet, I wasn't pleased, not because of the general logic of what happens for (to) me at these things, but 1) the variety of food was noticeably less than that of the East Manor in Elmhurst 2) It was fucking dirty!!! There were vestiges and crumbs on the piles of plates, and by the icecream station, some bowls sat in this sad, dirty tub. My 7 year old cousin ate from a cone that was so tattered that it looked like a prop from the Mummy. No sprinkles, too. But the redeeming factor was my continual visit to get these great samosa-shaped spinach fritter things of which I can't think of the name. And the sushi, decent sushi. Some of the food had labels, others didn't. I don't get it. I signed a petition in support of a comptroller on the way out. (Down to the last minute). They do have: lobster (limited supply; someone distributes it out to people waiting on a line; these are gone before they are announced, haha) crab oysters sushi and sashimi (freshness is questionable but the fish had no funky taste -- only that the tendons in the raw fish were stringy) peking duck (wait in a short line to have however many you want, prepared in front of you. i can't eat duck skin and she was nice enough to cut it out. it tasted mighty) dim sum choices 6 soups to choose from many more chinese foods to choose from desserts (cookies, ice cream, herbal jelly, a chilled soup with basil seeds and lychee and melon that i thought was nice, and more) Quality of food is below the standards of good Chinese food; some items can be cold. This is a review of the take out portion of the restaurant. 4 stars for the food. 2 stars for the service. The roasted meats for take out towards the middle of the ground floor are good: roast pork (char siu), soy sauce chicken (see yu guy), steamed chicken, roast duck, duck wings. You can also order some roasted meats with rice and veg (usually cabbage) is included ($5.75). Beware! The workers do not speak any English, not even the word "wings" is understood. Only Mandarin is spoken inside. The woman in the back near the roasted meats makes your ticket and you give it to the cashier. The stocky ticket woman is extremely rude and unpleasant. Obnoxious to deal with unless you speak fluent Mandarin. Near the front of the restaurant are entrees that can be ordered separately or 4 with rice ($6.25). You can point to these dishes to go with the rice. These meat and veg dishes that go with the rice are leftovers from what doesn't sell in the sit-down part of the restaurant. The final product is kind of wet because there's so much sauce, but you do get a lot of food for $6.25. I usually can split an order into 2 meals. When I come here I usually have a craving for roasted meats or the cooked veg. I have to steel myself to deal with some of the workers who are often rude depending on which ones are working that day. This is a restaurant that I have been to for dim sum and dinner, never had buffet (not a fan of buffet). The service and food for dinner is great. Unfortunately, I cannot say the same for the dim sum and service during breakfast / brunch / lunch hours. Over the years, I have seen the portions of dim sum shrink and price increase here, but probably true for most restaurants. When this place is packed, expect to be waiting to be called on to be seated. They also offer your typical roast pig, roast pork, roast duck (for take out). At one point, they offer "valet parking" in the lot behind the restaurant, not sure if they still have it, the "valet parking" is terrible. If not, there may be a guy in the lot directing you where to park your car and space is very tight (being barely able to step in and step out of your own car). I gave this place 5 stars compared to other buffets I have been to. From South Carolina, California and Virginia. This is one of the best buffets I have been to. The place is huge and the selection seems to be endless. We went here when they had a special where it was I think $15-20/person. I noticed that they also have a banquet hall, where I saw a wedding reception going on. If it's good for a wedding, then the food must be good. I normally eat Sushi and things that I can't get from normal Chinese Food places. So my plates mainly consisted of Sushi, Oysters and Duck. I was very impressed by the sushi selection. They had, a rainbow roll where it was covered in different flavors or roe. Not only do they have regular sushi, but also the "premium ones". The fish and rice ratio was good. I thought that service could not get any worse, but it did. This place sucks. Fought for the check with the fam, and won today, like the good Asian lady that I'm supposed to be. Paid for the bill and was confused about whether the tip was included or not. I asked a couple members of the staff and they told me to leave it on the table. My family however insisted that it was already included on the check and that they were lying to me. I left and saw the no tip and no service charge sign by the entrance. Best Asian Cuisine Buffet! This place is amazing, and is worth traveling for 30 minutes to an hour for. It is pricey, but worth it to eat during special occasions. The place is very big and is always busy, and there are sometimes a wait. In spite of the wait, the food there is worth it. From the seafoods to the vegetables are all cut, fried, and cooked freshly. It is an asian cuisine, but still somehow finds a way to put a little bit of spice in their food to help accent it. There is also a lady who has her own station, (as well as the sushi station) where her job is primarily cut and prepare peking duck for you. The dessert station has a good amount of asian variety dessert. There are also fruits and ice cream, depending on your preference. You definetely won't be disappointed, except being too full, and it definetely a place where you want to eat all you can eat! read more

That, my friends, is the essence of buffet style dining at East Buffet in Flushing. When you ascend the stairs of East Buffet, you will encounter two choices, to the right, a dim sum palace and to the left, a Chinese serve yourself buffet. I've had both and you can't go wrong with either. First the dim sum. What can I say about this place? All the dim sum you would expect from Chinatown is here and done to standards at reasonable prices per dish. Second, the buffet, the lobster I had mentioned earlier comes in batches few and far between. I have always thought that east does it fair share in offering a decent selection of seafood, which includes Japanese sushi and shellfish. Since I'm a huge seafood fan, they did not disappoint. As with all buffets, be wary of selections with lots of starch and breading which will fill you up in a hurry. The only negative I can think about at East is their slim selection of sweets or desserts. Now for the pricing, the dim sum is sold by the dish and you pay for as much as you eat. The buffet however is usually discounted. The last time I went, i think I paid $17 for the dinner buffet and $12 for the lunch. Both were bargains! Gorge and enjoy! read more

You have to know the rules to really take advantage of the 24.95/person all-you-can eat buffet + hot pot. 1. do not pick one of everything! I felt that east buffet made the food really really fast. as a result, the food is extra oily on some dishes - avoid at all cost. My friend was in charge of picking the cooked food while I get the stuff for hotpot. my thoughts: the cooked vegetables are there to drag you down and fill you up. the fish and seafood are delicious while the meats are more of a gamble. looks can be very deceiving. the beef ribs were tasty, but the chicken was dry on the inside but doused with sauce in a feeble attempt to mask the inadequacy of the food. I foolishly grab a chunk of whole beef, mainly because i didnt see the bacon beef yet. I also grabbed a good amount of fish and shrimp balls. NOT a good idea. these balls are half actual meat while the other half is starch/tofu - filler material. Their selection of food for hot pot is superb but I did not get an opportunity to get all the food that i wanted to get. I was full from all the mistakes that I made! Their deserts shouldn't be on your wish list as an ending to the gluttonous feast. It's so-so. Despite all I said, I will be back. Next time, I will be prepared and focused. read more

East Buffet is composed of two floors, the lower level is for Chinese food. This includes a section in the front near the doors where you can pick 3 or 4 small portions of entrée in a rice box ($5). Another section where you can purchase bbq meats (duck, pork, oil chicken, soy chicken). They have a sit down area where you can purchase Chinese rice and noodle dishes towards the back. I think their bbq meats are pretty good (unless you go really late at night, in which case the meat is more dry, and there is less of a selection). The rice dishes and noodle dishes are okay, nothing super special but also not bad. If you are ordering a soup noodle dish to go, they will pack it separately for you if you ask (extra cost - I think 25 cents). The second floor is used for dinner banquets at night and dimsum during the day. I usually go to East Buffet when it is really late in the day and I know most of the other dimsum places in Flushing have already stopped serving dimsum. The dimsum here usually lasts a little longer. The dishes are just okay, but for the price and location - definitely not bad (they have parking). They have a dimsum price special after 2PM for $2.00 for each dimsum selection. The pork ribs is good and the beef chong (beef wrapped in a flat rice noodle) is the best here out of all the dimsums in Flushing. Good amount of carts that actually do come around. They also have a food station where you can go up to and pick up special items. Service: friendly and quick. Décor: They really need to get new table cloths. Without my chinese sister-in-law around I'm terrified of hot pot, so we stayed with the cooked buffet. Sampled a number of items. It really depends on how fresh out of the kitchen everything is. My first round I had some really quite perfect crispy fried tofu. When I took another piece later in the evening, it must have been from the same batch because now it was soggy and luke-warm. The mushrooms were the only other really delectable item I had. The peking duck was nice, since I hardly ever feel like ordering a whole one, although the buns could have been fresher. The strangest thing was the service. My friend and I were taking our time, and since it's a buffet we were eating small amounts gradually. Even though the place was half-full and it was only 8 pm, after we had just gone up for some fruit, one of the waiters snatched up our ticket and made a huge gesture of bringing us the check. Plus the fresh sushi bar. Any side street chinese buffet is a joke. Crab legs, which seems to be the end all be all at some places, are stacked pile high. No shortages ever. But what's crab legs compared to all the other seafood laden dishes they have. The bad news is that this East buffet located in queens, pales in comparison to the one in Long Island. Although this location has valet parking and it's much prettier on the outside. The Long Island location is phenomenal. They have better prices. T'his review is for the restaurant downstairs. GOOD: The dinner menu offers value for money. The $7.99 lobster is a good deal, as is the big serving of crystal crab for $20+. Last winter (small) lobsters were going for $3 after 10 pm. The roast duck is among the best in Flushing. At Thanksgiving, you can bring in your turkey for the restaurant to roast. Only for the a la cart menu do we frequent this place, which closes at 2 am. The pre-cooked dishes sold near the entrance is another story. BAD: The interior is tired and run down, matching the service fresh off the boat from provincial China. The once-presentable restrooms in the basement are a disaster, with open doors revealing often unstoppable flows, cracked tiles and other effects fit for a dank grotto. Any improvements from a few one-day renovations in the past 2 years remain invisible to the naked eye. UGLY: The dining floor is often grimy and sticky, just like the owner's insistence on making customers pay sales tax on the service charge. The managers and waiters say many customers have complained, but their boss refuses to stop this practice. Perhaps he will do so after a government audit. read more

This restaurant has been around for 14 yrs, known for their buffet innovation in the heart of Main Street Flushing. Their success is based on cheap food costs for the masses. Have been there numerous times in the past decade and recently dined there for a wedding in their dim sum room. The chair covers were worn and pilling in the fabric, the rest rooms were...well...like a restroom in Hong Kong..sticky, smelly, dirty! But...that's normal for a Chinatown like restaurant. I've been eating here for about 5 times. Mostly for the seafood part of the buffet. Sushi and Sashimi are soso, but good to stop the craving. The line for Oyster is alway long, watch out for those guys who go there just for Oyster. They will keep going back and get their plate fill with oyster ... the amigo who shocks the oyster can't keep up with them. Another line you have to fight for is the lobster line. Each time a new tray of ginger/scallion lobster came out, you have to "fight" with others to grab a few pieces before everything is gone and you have to wait for another 15 min for the next tray. Lately, they are running promotion for dinner, $15.99 per person. ($10 less that the regular price) So go try it while it's cheap if you haven't try it before. I like it so far. read more

Great selection and fast clean service. They really do have everything you could want from a Chinese buffet, they even have a sushi station. All the dishes are fresh too, coming out all the time. My favorite is defintely the nice selection of soups that they have, as well as the ridiculous amounts of seafood. Maybe it was just the night I went, but count how many tables have someone chopping away at the crab legs, I guarantee it will be at least 1 person per table! Although this place is PACKED, I haven't had to wait anymore than 10 minutes for a table for four. Also they're running a half off deal these days, and dinner was $15 a person, unbelievable for what you get. The only downsides are soda is not included, but they do give you unlimited tea of course. I came here last Sunday with a group of friends. It was overall a good experience, seating is on the second floor, so its a pretty cool view actually. You get a good view of all the planes that fly low on their way in to Laguardia. Its your typical dim sum spot where they come around to tables with carts. One thing I would mention is that they have a food station where you can get made to order items. One thing we got from here was steamed snow pea leaves, they were dope. Would def check this out. Also we ordered Peking duck, which wasn't brought around, but we saw it down stairs and asked if we could get some. This really hit the spot, as did the egg tarts. I would also mention that one of my friends said that they only ate certain kinds of pork, which prompted me to quip "what, only high society hog." Best peking duck with pancake! Maybe I'm giving it 4 stars just b/c I am deeply craving the duck right now. It was really really good though. Succulent duck meat, crispy skin, nice sauce, and cooling of a plain pancake. There's also a good dim sum and sushi selection. The rest of the buffet was aight. So basically you can pay 3 persons' meal worth for 4 people. Good deal! There were the usual: vegetables, noodles, meat slices, many fishballs and sushi. Even though there are 2 sushi chefs behind the table, they cannot keep up with the demand. They had a decent selection of fruits and puddings (mango, coconut). They even had hot tofu pudding. It was a good meal to keep warm. Be aware that you have to fight to get the fresh shrimp that jumps! It probably comes out every 15 minutes and people fight for it like there it no tomorrow. East Buffet Lunch: Dim Sum. For $1.75 any dish (Small/medium/large) and pay no service charge. I say it is a good place for dim sum in flushing. But there is actually a 15 minute wait time even on a weekday because of this low cost. There was a dim sum frying station which had many varieties of dumplings, stuff peppers, and turnip cakes. But still they cannot keep up with the customers. Had to wait for a while for simple dishes such as shrimp/beef crepes, or pheonix feet. I would come here if I had a lot of time to kill. With numerous fast 'to-go' places popping up around Flushing, i would say that their prepared dishes available for take-out isn't even that special anymore! The only reason I go there? It is usually very crowded on weekends and holidays. Th e waiting can be long. The dim sum price is fixed with tax and tips included. They serve you the push cart dim sum.
