After a long day spent on my feet in the healthcare industry, I took myself to a little restaurant in the neck of the woods of Elk Grove. Ebisu! :) I walked into the restaurant and this is my second time being here. First time writing a review, the lights were bright and about 70% of the restaurant was full. Although, given it didn't feel busy and neither did it feel bustling. Lots of chatter and conversation and music was fairly low. We were instantly greeted and sat by our server. And she immediately brought out waters after asking us what we would like to drink. A few moments of looking at their menu, I started to order a little here and a little there. We first started off and shared the Large Asahi Beer, it came out with two crisp cold glasses. Was refreshing Next came out the Garlic Salmon, it was topped with avocado, garlic crispy chili, and micro greens. The sauce was a bit too sweet and thick. I think I'm used to having a more light, tangy, citrus-y sauce with it. Due to the savory sauce and avocado, the lack of micro greens and no daikon, there wasn't enough balance between the flavors. It wasn't nasty nor was it the best thing I have ever eaten. But it's probably something I wouldn't get again, although the slices of salmon were fresh and thick. Next thing that came out was the oyster shooters, not much to say besides the warm sake, egg, gave it the normal oyster shooter taste still a big W for me. We ordered pickled wasabi and soon after the bluefin toro nigiris came out. It was amazing and fatty just how it should be. Great balance of thick pieces and rice. Would definitely order again. Everything came out one at a time and after a bit of time came the hamachi Kama and ziggy roll. Service felt a little slow at this time and it took awhile. Ziggy roll was good and a little bit too much rice for me, I ripped some of the rice pieces off. The hamachi Kama was great and cooked well. The ponzu sauce that came along with it was nice as well. Overall, I enjoyed my meal, would possibly return in the future, but I feel like for the price I paid and the quality I received in return did not match. It's overpriced & low quality & took quite a bit of time to come out; ~8 mins for miso, ~21 mins for the jalapeños, ~40 mins for half of our sushi orders & 51mins for the rest to come out. Ginger; thick inconsistent slices & very large sizes! All sushi rolls; looks different with uneven slices (thick/small roll sizes), yet tastes the same (all plain tasting) just like a cali roll, & they had poor thick cuts of fish! Oh and BONUS! It comes with fish bones! Yum! Sake bomb: sake was barely hot & very little...w/ good amount of Sapporo Miso soup: bowl filled half way... idk maybe they didn't have enough or wanted to save extra for tomorrow or the next day? Wasabi: typical wasabi u get anywhere else The best sushi roll was the lion king, however, it was poorly constructed and still raw even though it's a baked roll... I couldn't tell if the rolls were lying flat or vertical either (they were lying flat). I think what made it good was the sauce. Also, I enjoyed the jalapeños peppers. Oh my gosh, this place is DELICIOUS!! I am so satisfied with my lunch here and would love to come back. The environment is so nice with comfortable chairs, balanced distances between the tables, and the jazz music! The waitresses were very kind and did anything to make customers' time a good one. I had an in-training waitress and she did spectacular despite maybe first time nerves! I hope she knows she's doing well :) Now on to the food, we got wakame/seaweed salad, sea steak, philly roll, ebisu roll, lion king roll, and HW-5 roll. Starting off with seaweed salad and the sea steak was welcoming with the salad just being yummy and the sea steak seared amazingly. The tuna tasted fresh and there is a nice kick to it. All the rolls were delicious, but my favorite one was the ebisu. Highly recommend!!! The lion king was also very good; reminded me of a great sushi bake. My favorite was the Hot Snow White, smoky sweet flavors that just melt in your mouth. Hot Snow White was good as well. Edamame, well it was edamame and it was good. Service: Service was good. First went there with my man. The uni caught our attention...very fresh, buttery, creamy and elegant. Went a second time, we took my bro. He also loved everything about the place. The ambiance, the environment, the location, and most importantly our service. I forgot his name. Nice young gentlemen. Update: Apparently the head chef is no longer with Ebisu. That's too bad. Time to find another Sushi restaurant. I've been a fan of Ebisu Japanese Restaurant since Nov. 2022 when a new Head Sushi Chef transferred to this establishment from Vegas. He's done wonders to the menu and increased their freshness, combined taste of ingredients, and created a friendlier atmosphere by walking around and often saying hello to guests. I've mixed up what I order every time I eat here to have a taste of everything so I don't really have a favorite unless the menu is an answer. I like that their dishes are artfully presented. Make sure to check out the specials menu posted on the wall. I appreciate their loose leaf Genmaicha tea, it's a perfect pairing with any of the food. All the waiters and staff are friendly and prices are typical for a sushi restaurant. Music is upbeat but low enough volume to hear each other and sports channel is always on the TV. Ebisu is what other Japanese restaurants were before the franchising of their brand. Ebisu is my new favorite sushi restaurant in Elk Grove. read more

Ebisu is our new favorite Japanese restaurant. We only discovered it a few months and have either eaten there or taken out probably 5-6 times and have always had a great experience. Our favorite is the Double Toro roll which is probably the best roll we've ever had anywhere: the fish portions are huge and supremely fresh and creamy tasting. It is also the only roll I've ever had where I don't feel the need to dip in soy sauce and wasabi as it is perfect the way it comes. My favorite entree is the teriyaki salmon which is always perfectly cooked and with a slightly smoky taste and crispy skin. Finally, the staff are very nice and so kind. Love it here! read more

My family and I stopped here on our way to Monterey from Reno. I wanted sushi for my birthday dinner and found this place on yelp. It did not disappoint. I travel a lot and have tried many different sushi places, this is definitely in my top 3 (maybe top 2) best sushi restaurants. It was late and not very busy, we were seated immediately. The service from start to finish was top notch. Our server, Aaron, was attentive, quick and thoughtful. They have a 5 course signature entree menu that is $95 per person and has all premium quality selections. I was interested and Aaron said they just launched that menu and I would be the first to order it. He seemed excited so I decided to give it a try. It starts with your choice of lobster salad or oysters and shrimp. I chose oysters and shrimp. They were both fresh and full of flavor. Next was the premium sashimi, all my favorite toro's and uni. Again, amazing quality, freshness and full of flavor. Each piece had real wasabi with it. The third course was premium nigiri, which included another uni, A5 wagyu and 3 more pieces (can't remember the names). My favorite of that selection was wagyu nigiri but they were all equally delicious. The main course was 2 seared scallops, 2 shrimp and a lamb chop. I seriously can't say enough good things about the whole meal. Lastly, I finished it off with a chocolate mochi. My husband had the chicken katsu which he loved and it was a generous portion. My daughter had a California roll, she said it was the best one she's ever eaten, and a shrimp tempura roll. My boys loved the miso soup and tempura shrimp. We also ordered a crepe cake for dessert and that was a yummy surprise. The restaurant was clean and spacious. The food was out of this world and the service was above and beyond. A very memorable birthday dinner. Wish I lived closer so I could eat there all the time. 10/10 recommend. read more

Saw that a new place opened up and had to try it out! This place is located in the same plaza of Oz on West Taron. We arrived around 5pm and it wasn't too busy so we got seated right away. Took a good look at the menu and it's your average price for sushi now a days (~ $18+ per roll) Appetizers: Miso Soup - Your typical miso soup, I enjoyed it lol it wasn't mushroomy like some other places have it. Grilled Calamari - Not pictured, but I thought it was alright. Maybe because we didn't really have sauce or any lemon that came with it, we asked our server for a side of sauce and it was this mayo base that was pretty basic. I will say, it wasn't as rubbery as I thought it was going to be and it did have a good flavor. Mixed Tempura- Your basic mixed tempura, we just wanted to try and see if it'd be any different from other sushi restaurants. Jalapeño Bits- if you're familiar with Mikuni's Flaming Shrooms, these are similar. It's basically a Jalapeño filled with crab mix, Unagi sauce and spicy mayo (without the mushroom lol). Our Meal- We ordered 4 different types of Nigiri (Otoro, Escolar, Japanese Uni, and Amaebi) - They were all amazing! The Japanese Uni tasted better than I expected, super fresh. Hot Snow White Roll- It was your average sushi roll, nothing spicy about it haha but it was decent. Service- Our Server was nice, didn't catch his name but he was cool. We ordered a few rolls to go for some family and it took about 15-20 minutes to prepare and it comes in a really fancy packaging. We left around 615ish and they started to get pretty busy! We decided to check out EBISU, a relatively new Japanese restaurant in Elk Grove based on the Yelp ratings. Parking: super easy in the huge lot Ambiance: open, clean and spacious They have a list of the fresh fish offerings on a board. We opted for Kinmedai and ocean trout. The rolls we ordered were not your regular rolls. The rice was soft, chewy and seasoned. All the fish was fresh. The tempura was lightly battered. Customer service was excellent. I ordered some food to go and our server went through the order with me to ensure that the rolls didn't contain sesame seeds. EBISU is as great. Not just for Elk Grove. It's like SF good. This is my new go-to Japanese restaurant in EG. I highly recommend it for anyone who loves a fresh selection of quality fish. read more

Kind of brings you out of it with the plain dishware and the wooden takeout chopsticks, though it probably depends on what you order to get the nice plates. Decently priced pieces of fish, but I would recommend gravitating towards their specialty rolls rather than the nigiri. I ordered the happy combo which is 8 pieces of nigiri, and they give you pretty standard cuts like salmon, yellowtail, and red tuna. The temperature of the rice was lukewarm and the fish was room temperature, and the pieces were chewy and mild in flavor. My boyfriend got the tonkotsu rice bowl, and the portion was huge - they give you two large pieces of fried pork. It was tender and crisp, and we ended up taking some of it home and enjoying it as leftovers for dinner. read more

I'm a few months behind on reviews but this one immediately jumped the queue since I just couldn't wait to share how amazing this place is! We were on the outskirts of Elk Grove looking for dinner and were immediately enticed by their mouthwatering menu and photos. The two rolls that drew me in were the Double Toro ($20) and Hokkaido ($18), both of which were incredible -- the scallops were succulent, delicate and sweet but tbh ya girl is still dreaming bout that Double Toro. Already such a decadent creation with two of my favorite fishes (toro on the outside and salmon on the inside), but the chefs didn't stop there -- delicately sprinkled on top alongside the tobiko is shredded shiso leaf (if you're Viet you'll recognize this distinct flavor immediately from spring rolls/greens mixes) adding a bright, mysteriously minty note to complement the buttery fat fish. Though ramen isn't their specialty here, we ordered a bowl nonetheless to stave off the winter chill and the style of tonkotsu that they serve was actually right up my alley-- a light and appeasing, flavorful broth with generous portions of deliciously fatty chashu. I loved everything about this restaurant during my first visit-- from the spacious and elegant-yet-lowkey interior with classical music playing in the background to the heavy earthenware bowls and utensils. This place looks very nice inside where you can see the sushi chef making the sushi. However, one of the chef talked so much that I was worried that his saliva was everywhere! I hope the chefs starts wearing masks if they are talking.. We ordered ramen, happy combo and tempura for lunch. I ate the happy combo that consists of 8 nigiri and my husband ate the ramen. The happy combo was good, the fish was fresh. Those 8 pieces was serve on a long but very long plate that's over almost half of the table! Wish they include a little more stuff than just 8 pieces with the long plate. Overall it was good and I do enjoy it. Came here on a whim and glad I tried it! Heard lots of mixed reviews on social media so it was never a spot I thought to try on my own. However, the staff were incredibly kind, the ambiance was bright and the music made it feel like a fancy restaurant! The food was absolutely delicious as well. Fast and attentive service, clean, bright space, and delicious food. Definitely would recommend. The only reason its a 4/5 is because I found it to be a tad bit on the expensive side. $18 for a vegetarian sushi felt a bit sharp but I'm not mad about it read more

Came here for a private party. I'm not sure if it was waiter related for kitchen related. It was super slow. It was a two hour dining experience while surrounding tables were seated after us and left at least a half hour before us. The food was good in comparison to local restaurants, my only complaint is that the lion king was super cooked. and flat. I'm used to the roll sitting vertical and the top being torched a little bit. My dad's favorite spot, so naturally were there for his birthday. A friend of mine said this place is "alright," so I haven't bothered to try it until now. Has more of a fine dining vibe when you walk in, main influence being the music. Staff was very friendly as well. One of the main things that stood out to me was the plating. It really elevated my overall experience, and separated this place from other sushi spots that value speed over presentation. The Ebisu Roll was pretty fresh and tasty at the same time; however, the rice was a bit much, most likely due to the way it was cut. I really enjoyed the HW-5 Roll as well. The unagi didn't taste over cooked, and the sauce wasn't overwhelming. The Oyster Shooter I got was served in a wine glass versus a sake cup, which helped it to go down very well, and the oysters they used were a good size and quality. Also, the veggies they served with the Chicken Teriyaki were a nice change from the standard side salad that I normally get from other Japanese restaurants. I would definitely try this place again, and give it 4.5 stars if i could, but I'm a bit concerned with the return value of this place for me at the moment. There weren't a ton of items on the menu that I felt compelled to order. Luckily I was able to try other people's food this first time around though. read more

I finally had the chance to try Ebisu on Sunday night and it did not disappoint! The clean, modern decor was very nice, but the food is what really stood out. We shared 2 appetizers and 2 rolls, which was the perfect amount for two. The truffle hamachi was flavorful and the hamachi was a decent size. It had real wasabi on it. The double toro roll was good, and the toro really melts in your mouth. The sushi tacos were DELICIOUS! That was my favorite dish at Miyabi, so I'm glad I can still get it! [If you didn't know, apparently it is the same owner.] Lastly, the Hokkaido roll was a bit slow to come out, but it was good. A bit too heavy on the sauce though. Our waiter was very soft spoken, so we couldn't hear half of what he said and we had to have him repeat himself. But he was friendly enough and all the workers refilled our water several times. The menu is extensive with cold and hot dishes, sushi, sashimi, nigiri, entrees, and ramen. We had the 9 pieces assorted sashimi, and it was fresh and good size. We also had two rolls and they were equally good. Ziggy roll with deep fried soft shell crab, avocado, scallions, tobiko, spicy garlic aioli & wrapped in soy wrap. Elk Grove Special Roll with soft shell crab, cucumber, 4 kinds of fish with house special sauce, green onions & tobiko. I'd like to come back and try their other dishes or ramen. I love how fresh the food is, the sashimi melted like butter, the sushi was on point, even the chicken katsu was fried to perfection. I've been to other restaurants where the salad was on the side - they end up being forgettable, but here the salad dressing they use was delicious & I could definitely finish an entire bowl of it by itself. We've been back for a 3rd time. The food was amazing. I made reservations for 5 for last night and needed to change it to 8. Thankfully no problem! We sat in the room with the round table! Food was excellent! The fried calamari were very good and even my 5 year old grandson loved them. Service was great but we missed our favorite server Nikki. Our guest had the stir fry Udon and said it was tasty but could have used a little more udon noodles. Love loved my Lollipop Lamb Chops! Came here for lunch on a Saturday right when they opened. There was only one other party seated at the time. We were seated promptly, but they didn't take our order for a while. Service was atrocious - half the table received their food and finished it before the other half received theirs. At this point, there should have been some reassurance that the rest of the food was on the way. We were left waiting with no service. It's probably because there was a content creator seated at the bar and all the service went to them. It definitely shows what kind of clientele they prefer. At the end of the meal, we were told we can't receive and pay for our check until the table was cleared of our dishes. Again, we were left waiting even after the dishes were taken away. I don't understand this policy at all - there were even other staff just standing around and talking to one another but no one wanted to come and give us the bill. What could have been a quick and pleasant lunch ended up being such a time suck. The quality of food isn't enough to redeem their service, plus it's pricey for what it was. New management for Ebisu has totally trashed what made this place special. I used to love coming here and even had a previous 5 star review. I came to eat earlier this month and I see the ownership has changed, but the menu still looked the same and my normal waiter was there, so I expected things to be relatively the same quality as before. My normal waiter is usually very friendly, perky, and happy to assist. However, I noticed he wasn't like that anymore. He was very cold and did the bare minimum of his job, which is really not normal for him at all. Food and service sucked. New management hanging out behind the bar and being vulgar in Chinese (I speak the language fluently and was disappointed that they thought it was okay!). They weren't cussing, but just making toilet jokes and friendly bullying of each other but not appropriate for a customer to overhear during their dinner. Food was old, cold, and gross. My coworker placed an order to go for me and my family but we ended up wanting to order more food when we got there since the babies were behaving okay. This was my first family outing with my brand new baby and my 18 month old so I was quite nervous. We ordered the Lion King Roll, Sacramento Roll, the Chicken Teriyaki, Tonkotsu Ramen with Extra Ramen, and Grilled Calamari. Arrived on a Friday at about 6:45pm and seating was full. Checked in on the tablet in front and was seated in about 10 mins. And by 7pm there was a crowd of people waiting. I don't know what it is but I tend to draw in crowds lol. We ordered the double toro which was on their special menu. If you had to choice, I would definitely recommend( so smooth and buttery). We also ordered the Ebisu( honestly nothing special about it), The Elk Grove, and salmon lover. The last two were also delicious. This place doesn't have an extensive list of rolls like other places but the quality is a lot better. Meat and rice portions were on point. I will say it was pricier than other sushi places I've eaten. All rolls were $16+ for the most part. Would definitely come again as they seemed to move their customers through quickly.
