My go to place when I'm craving tacos. Love their 99 cent taco Tuesdays. They also have a convenient pick-up side so you can order your food ahead of time and take it to go. Menudo is really good and their shrimp cocktails are the best I've tried around these areas, lots of big shrimp and the sauce is really tasty. This place has great food, it used to have great service too but it's not even good now. Last two times we've been in, we have waited about 45 minutes for our food and one of those times we ordered tacos de cabeza, 30 minutes after we ordered the server comes out and tells us they are out of that meat. Really? It took you 30 minutes to realize that? So unhappy with the service we started calling and ordering to go, I call today and they put me on hold and while I'm driving I figured by the time I get to the restaurant my order will be ready, well, they didn't pick up the phone until I was already at the restaurant so I went ahead and ordered my food and I'm just sitting in my car waiting and decided I have had enough and wrote this review. Where do i start? i come from a city with about 600,000 people from all cultures that have amazing restaurants. I am mainly Mexican and have been eating great Mexican food for 47 years now and I am very picky about what I eat and how it tastes. I just recently moved to the Central California Coast and have been looking for some GOOD Mexican food. I'VE FINALLY FOUND IT! Efren's Mexican restaurant is so authentic and great tasting I go there every Tuesday for taco Tuesday (1.25 per taco) although i have not eaten everything on the menu, but every item that I have ordered has been perfect! The prices are reasonable and the service is okay but not great. They do NEED to start having Mexican music in the background (not too loud) playing because it was too quiet while I was there with friends last Tuesday. I will be going back every Tuesday until I reach 300 Lbs. (lol), I'm 160 Lbs. right now so i have a ways to go. I highly recommend Efrens for quality Mexican food. read more

This place is legit. Proper lengua tacos. Chorizo nachos are also on point. Sometimes we get the soups or ceviche tostadas too. The burritos are big, but so-so. The food is the best I've had since I was in Hermosillo and Guaymas years ago! The only reason it isn't five stars is because of the service, and that's not the servers' fault, as far as I (a former waitress) could see. The place needs a busboy. Servers were bussing their own tables when they could have been taking care of the many customers! Man the food is good good good, though. The nachos are gnarly and hearty. I had a couple of carnitas, and a ceviche tostada, my stars, simple and clean food, fresh, honest, tasty as could be. My husband had a beef enchilada; I long ago stopped ordering enchiladas for myself at [California] Mexican restaurants because they all look and taste the same when offered a bite ...meh. Normally the food here is really good but the service is the worse I have ever experienced. The woman with the crazy eye make up is rude rude rude and if you ask for something like no onions in your burrito she talks shit and glares at you. The sit down restaurant area is BS. Don't expect to be spoken to or your order be taken for at least 30 min. And don't order any type of soup. My husband ordered soup and I got my food and we waited and waited and was told 2 times that his soup would be ready soon. After waiting 50 min. My husband had to go find someone and ask what was going on with his soup only to find out they were not making it. Um not cool. I was excited to try this place after hearing so many great things. First off, they use lard which means that if you are a vegetarian, don't eat pork, or are conscious about your health you should stay away. The chicken tostada I had was okay, but nothing special. I did have stomach pains after my meal, which could have been because of the lard. Overall, I didn't enjoy it at all and left feeling guilty about my meal. Yes it is cheap and they give you a lot of food, but I don't see any of that as making this place a 4 star eatery. read more

Had the best nachos I have ever had. I know that is not what most people get when they want mexican food, but my wife ordered it and I happily shared it with her. What made it was the freshly made tortilla chips that all the way to the last bite, were not soggy. Was loaded with the works including some carne asada that was so tasty. I also ordered a carne asada taco and lengua taco. Lengua was tasty and did not make me feel sick as some other places do. Carne asada was tasty as well. Food came quick and was well worth it. Got all this plus a small horchata for about $12 that fed two. Then we headed over for a show at the Melodrama which is a few steps away. I have been craving it ever since. read more

After reading all the reviews we decided to give this place a try. Being from Santa Cruz maybe my expectations for great Mexican food is high, but this place was just "ok". We ordered Nachos with Assad, another Nachos with Carnitas, Cheese Quesedilla, and a side of rice. Our Nachos were cold, and needed some salsa or something to give it extra flavor. Quesedilla was just average, but my 4 year old loved the rice. Might return if we are in desperate need of Mexican food, but for now our search continues. read more
