It looks like any other Mexican greasy-spoon type deal (it used to be a hot dog and sandwich place, so it's got the bar to show for it) but I was extremely happy with the quality of the food I ordered. If you're into real Mexican food, you're going to love it. It isn't SUPER cheap but it's certainly affordable - my 3 pork taco plate with beans and rice, which was more than filling, was about $7.95 or so, which was pretty much the median price for all of the dinner plates. Not cheap, not expensive, pretty average prices. The food wasn't average though, it was almost as good as Grandma's home cooking. Got taken here by a friend for a lunch date and really, I loved it. I've been here many times and this is my go-to place to take college friends. The staff is really friendly here. They're tacos are so delicious and they really reel you in with their chips and salsa. My mom, daughter, and I stopped by El Amigo on a Friday night. Dine in was not busy at all but the take out orders were flying fast and furious. We snagged a booth and were immediately treated to fresh (and super freaking delicious) chips and salsa. My mom and I both ordered the avocado burrito and my daughter ordered chicken tacos. Our meal arrived pretty quickly and was really, really good. The avocado tasted fresh and was not too mushy and my daughter said that the chicken was "spicy enough to taste good but not need a sip of water after every bite." In other words, the food was a total win. Only drawback? No bar service whatsoever--and you know I like a good margarita to wash down all those chips! ;) If you are in the NWI and looking for good, no frills Mexican food--look no further. Oh El Amigo steak burritos how I adore you and everything you encompass! El Amigo is hands down, the best Mexican food in the Region. I've not lived there in years, and I still crave their food on the regular. It's housed in a strip mall and this place is a dive. Please don't go in here expecting something special- the food is what is special. I've never had a steak burrito like the El Amigo steak burrito. In fact, we don't call it El Amigo we call it steak burrito in our family, and everyone knows what steak burrito is and where it is located. Yes, the steak burritos are that good. I don't know what they do or how they do it- but they are perfection. Make sure you get yours with cheese on top- mmmm my mouth is watering right now! The salsa here is pretty fab as well, just be aware that it is pretty spicy- both types. If you aren't a burrito lover, try the sopes, They are some of the best I've ever had. I'm going to second the reviewer who suggests take out. As I mentioned earlier, this place is a dive and very tiny. The few times I've eaten inside, I've had less than stellar service. It's pretty slow given there's usually only 2-3 guys behind the counter and a dining room full of patrons. But, if you ever find yourself in the area this is definitely the place to stop for Mexican. The chips weren't, but it may have been an off night. Decent value for the food, you're paying for quality not atmosphere. Table service isn't their strong suit, so if you're there when it's busy be prepared to wait.
