When is the last time you had pan dulce that remained fresh for days? I can't recall any recent ones and as a pan dulce lover who is always searching for a panadería that offers fresh pan this one is definitely a win. I've passed by this panadería several times and it's either closed or I thought they only accept cash. I had the time to walk in one day and of course I picked up a couple of my favorite conchas. I tasted them when I got home and the consistency was light, fluffy, and flavorful. The ratio of the sugar topping to bread was equal. Each bite had bread and sugar coating. The next day and the day after I had one and was surprised it remained fresh. This left a lasting impression and sent this panadería at the top of my list. I came back with my sister and bought several conchas, other pan dulce, tamales, and champurrado. The tamales had a lot of masa but the filling was very flavorful. The champurrado was good and could benefit from a good mix before serving it. They do accept card because I called and asked before I went. They offer a large variety of items besides pan dulce which was really neat. I was too busy admiring the pan to take a photo of the menu but you can find tortas and jugos here. The service is efficient. There is limited street parking and a few small lots around this place. The shop is small and you can easily pass right by it. This will become my go-to for conchas! read more

Ordered 2 dozen of green salsa chicken tamales. Tamales were so dry. It seemed like they were only chicken tamales and no sauce. So it was a super dry tamale. Better to get your tamales elsewhere. Bread was good though. read more

I have been on a quest to taste a champurrado for a while after reading about it online. I finally found this spot and made a stop here to grab a cup. This is clearly a local favorite based on the long line. I also grabbed a pastry which was very good. The champurrado was decent, a little too thick and rich for my taste but I can at least now say I have tasted it now. Note that parking in the area is a challenge. read more

Growing up in my family, we always had sweet bread available for a quick coffee treat in the morning. This being a staple item in the household the bread to me was stale and didn't taste fresh. I wasn't really a huge fan at the time until recently, as a coworker brought in a dozen and OMG everything was so fresh and tasty! For a moment I sat as my desk and just squeezed the bread between my fingers. As I was just surprised how bouncy and soft the sweet bread was at the time. This had confused me and had to bring it up with my family during a recent conversation. Why was the sweet bread dense growing up? Which my aunt just laughed and replied 'Our family was poor, Papa (grandparent) would only buy the old bread from the Panadería to save money or they would give us the old bread!' I was slighty shocked and humbled at the same time, cus growing up, I never felt poor and always was given everything I needed in life. Yet my family would cut cost for their small luxury of sweet bread every morning to provide for the family in other expenses. Anyways it's the small details, back to the review. The bakery offers a variety of sweet bread along with Tamales, Mexican Hot chocolate and an assortment of other fan flares. I typically park on the street, but I believe a parking lot is available. Bread is baked twice a day which varies and best to ask the attendants what time fresh bread is baked. As their bread is amazing when freshly baked. BE AWARE OVERCHARGE! I encourage you to double check your receipts they will overcharge you, ask the prices for the bread pieces and do your math. Their prices are way off. Mom paid what was told right at the store $28 and some change and paid with debit card. Got home and checked and they charged $135. Went back to the bakery let them know and took the bread back and they did the math again and now it was $ 37.70! I'm confused now what happened to the $28 dollars. Mom said she noticed the same discrepancy on the prices. Two weeks ago when she asked why she was charged so much, she was told that the bread prices are rising almost every week. Freshest Mexican bread I have come across in San Jose. And bonus for the late hours they open. I can buy a big bag of bread and it lasts the whole week and it still remains fresh as the day I bought it. So moist and delicious, every bite is like heaven. I always get the concha's, elote's, ojo de pancho, cuernos, empanadas, and a champurrado to go. I have yet to try their tamales but I hear great things about their tamales. Simply amazing Banana Nut Bread - Not too heavy, not too light - Just right. Goes perfectly well with that hot cup of coffee. Pan Dulce is soft and tasty. Chicken tamales are superb here. Great portion size with lots of tender and well seasoned meat filling. Parking can be bit of a hassle. So do try weekdays and non peak hours if you want to avoid long lines. read more

My favorite place in the Bay Area for pan dulce! I usually get elotes and cuernitos and what I love about theirs is - it's NOT DRY and THERE IS flavor! They sell other types of pan dulce, cakes, tortas, champurrado, and tamales. It's all good! A lot Mexican Panaderias. Finding the right one is the trick. Do they use lard or vegetable oil? Do they bake the bread or deep fry? This is another great panaderia in San Jose. They also have tamales and tortas and juices and champeron. They always have the racks stacked. Always ready for the customers. 5 star in my Yelp book. Now keep in mind this is the HOOD. This bakery has a large selection of sweet bread, Mexican pan dulce. I grabbed a few different pieces of bread and liked them all. They were all fresh and soft. The small block of cheesecake was on the dry side though and I didnt think it was fresh. The champurrado that I picked up with my goodies was super good and the best that I had in a long time. It was rich, thick, and creamy and served hot. I will be back for more bread and to try the tamales. read more

BEST TAMALES I have tried in a long long time!!! Seriously. I make tamales myself, and I am extremely picky with flavor and seasoning. Dough was fluffy and tasty; perfect seasonings (did not over salted or over spiced) chicken meat was soft and salsa full of homemade flavor! Tamales caseros for sure, will be back for more! Also they are a great size. Did not try the champurrado, will have to try it ASAP! Third time buying tamales it's now MAY; HORRIBLE HORRIBLE Must be a different cook now. No flavor only spicy which is fine if it's cooked right but no. On top of it all WE WERE SICK FOR 24hrs AFTER EATING THE TAMALES; WE HAD NOTHING ELSE THAT EVENING ONLY TAMALES AROUND 8pm AND WE WERE SICK ALL EVENING AND NEXT DAY! I tasted the conchas and the pastelitos when someone brought the pastries to work. The conchas are so awesome because the bread recipe is really soft and delicious. Whoever makes the doughs, batter for these treats pay a lot of attention, high details and high- qualty ingredients. This is the best concha I ever ate. being from out of town and visiting this bakery I was excited. I was really disappointed in the customer service. in Sacramento we have different names of different types of breads and each time we said something we got corrected and it wasn't a nice way to be corrected no customer service skills the ladies that were working on Sunday morning we're not professional carrying on their own conversations and just laughing hard as a consumer I probably would not go back to this bakery if I'm ever back in the San Jose area the product is good but the customer service is horrible siendo de fuera de la ciudad y visitando esta panadería, estaba emocionado. I walked into El Rico Pan Bakery a few days ago and it was really busy for such a small space. It was hard to even get to the cashier with the number of other people waiting in line; having kids with me didn't make it any easier. I must say though that the homemade bread I got from the store was light and crispy and it made for a really great breakfast snack with butter. I will visit the store again in the future. I only hope that I was there on the wrong day and at the wrong time; this time. The bread was perfect so I will definitely visit soon! read more
