For starters, Manuel is hilarious. He was our server during our visit and his energy was so great. The main thing that stood out about our experience with El Camino Real was the customer service. The wait was not long at all. They gave us the option to be seated out on the patio or inside, they also gave us the chips and salsa pretty fast. We didn't wait long for our food and drinks and the staff was very polite. The atmosphere was very calm, laid back and friendly. Great family run Mexican restaurant with the best fajitas in my opinion Update 5/23: we changed it up this time from our standard fajitas. A Dos Equis for me and chicken chimichanga as my wife enjoyed a margarita with her combo platter. The guacamole on my chimichanga was especially good. Mexican fried rice is also tasty, no hard grains of rice (a pet peeve of mine) and everything was served hot. I really wanted to like this place. My husband likes it, and a friend of mine also recommended it. It's not *bad* but it's super okay. I was excited to see enchiladas suizas on the menu, because I haven't seen that often since moving here from So. Cal. But I was terribly disappointed when they came out smothered in white queso sauce, instead of being topped with just the normal suiza sauce. (There was suiza sauce too, to be clear). My husband did enjoy his fajitas, but the kids agreed with me that the food was "okay." I also got a sangria margarita, which had a very generous portion. I ordered a giant steak burrito and it had 4-5 of the toughest pieces of so called steak inside along with some completely melted sour cream that looked like soup and a giant wedge and f tomato. We showed up, a group of 15 of us, last Sunday. It was about 3pm, so wasn't too busy. They didn't blink an eye about us moving some tables a bit. Our waitress took our drinks and food order and also didn't blink an eye when we were all separate checks. Everything came put pretty quickly and no errors. Drinks and chips were refilled quickly. In what world is a plate of rice and beans with a tortilla folded on top considered a burrito? (Please see my photo for reference.) Is this a DIY burrito, maybe? Why couldn't they have put the rice and beans INSIDE the tortilla? Do people really come here, order a burrito, receive a plate of loose food items on a plate, and think, "Yes, a burrito!"? Maybe I'M the one who's been wrong this whole time, thinking that a burrito is a cylinder that you eat while holding in your hands? I don't know what to believe anymore. My meal at El Camino Real is bringing up all sorts of questions, both culinary and existential. Bear with me as I unpack all this. I'd like to say that this burrito thing is an anomaly, but I've visited several Mexican restaurants around Indy that serve some version of a mixture of ingredients on a plate with a tortilla somewhere nearby and they call it a burrito. It's so confusing to my little brain, because what I was served was literally a plate of rice and beans with a tortilla on top. But then it makes me wonder: Is this maybe just what a burrito is? Maybe I just need to accept it and move on? Or maybe I need to change my way of thinking: Maybe what I think of as a burrito is really an enchilada (or quesadilla)? Maybe if I ordered a chimichanga, then I would get a burrito? But what's a chimichanga? There are just so many questions, and it's making my head hurt. On the plus side, the children who ate the burrito said it tasted good, so that's a plus. They were reluctant to try it at first, though, because, again, it didn't look like a burrito. Chips and salsa were complimentary, which was nice but the chips were stale. If I could give a no star review, I would. The food here was absolutely disgusting. I ordered a quesadilla with just cheese and chicken. It was completely saturated and greased soggy and had no cheese on it. It basically was a soggy tortilla with about two chicken breasts full of chicken. I ordered beef tacos for my children and neither one of them would eat it because the meat tasted so poor. This restaurant has the best enchiladas and Spanish rice I've eaten. Mexican food is my favorite, and I've been to a lot of Mexican places. The chicken Enchiladas Mexicanas are so great, I will never order anything else there. Seriously nobody does them better. Portion sizes are large, and I usually can take part of it with me to go for the next day's lunch. If you've not gone there before, be prepared for a very bright, mish-mash paint scheme, but it is a Mexican restaurant. The paint combined with the fluorescent lighting with sky and cloud film on it is a little much, but the food is so good, I don't care. In my original review, I gave it four stars because the salsa really isn't that great. I still think it is my least-favorite restaurant salsa, but it has improved some. I decided to update to give them the five stars they deserve because their entrees are great. My husband, who does order many things off the menu, agrees. I've been eating at El Camino in Fishers ever since it opened some 17 years ago, and throughout the years, they've been consistently serving delicious Mexican fare in a festive, friendly environment. Furthermore, their recipes never change, so that great meal you had there will taste EXACTLY like you remembered no matter when the last time you went to El Camino was! Everything I've eaten here has been excellent, but their Cheese Enchiladas stand out above all other Mexican restaurants. You would think cheese enchiladas would be a simple, straightforward dish to make, but so many places throughout the country butcher this "simple" dish. It starts with the unbelievable, creamy, gooey white cheese they put in their cheese enchiladas. Then they top it with smooth, well-blended, mild red sauce that is rich and delicious. Sounds easy, but too often when I order this plate elsewhere, the cheese isn't creamy and the red sauce is grainy, leaving me craving ElCo's perfection. To top it off, this restaurant is still owned and operated by the same family who opened it 17 years ago. I don't live as close to ElCo as I used to, so I don't come as often as I once did. Surprisingly though, the owner recognized me on a recent visit and stopped to ask how I've been. I had no idea she'd recognize me from years ago, but I enjoyed exchanging pleasantries with her, as I reminisced about when they first opened and were the only restaurant east of Brooks School road. It feels good to know that in today's day and age when restaurants come and go that the best places never stray from what makes them great!
