This place should truly be ashamed of themselves. I ordered the chicken flautas, and they were absolutely terrible. The shells were hard and dry, and the chicken was so overcooked it crumbled apart. The flautas weren't even rolled properly -- just tucked and dropped in grease. I was completely disgusted with this experience. When I called to let them know how disappointed I was, the person I spoke to told me that it was normal for the chicken to be dry because it's fried. That is absolutely not normal, and I told him as much before requesting a refund. Completely unacceptable quality and customer service. read more

Everything just work together, tender beef, flavorful veggies and I like the beans in a burrito. Nasty, extremely disappointing. The pictures on DoorDash are a catfish. They'll load the to go container but they'll throw in the pickled carrots, who puts those in nachos? I asked for extra cheese so it could be like the picture they had, barely any. And the meat was so bad. You can see they have some shrimp nachos. I got the steak. You either need to clean your pans better or don't cook steak in the same pan !!! There are people with fish allergies out there. And the horchata sucked. Our office ordered for lunch today and they got every order correct! It was great! I ordered al pastor torta with fries and a Diet Pepsi. That torta was GIANT! Worth every penny. They keep messing up my orders and then tell me to call DoorDash (FYI: I ordered from Grubhub and we picked up our own food). HUGE problem when there is no manager in store to speak to and then they don't want to remake our order. We were really inconvenienced because we have to drive there and back twice. Also, when I have had problems in the past with other restaurants, DoorDash won't refund you either! So I'm no longer using them. read more

It's been a long time since we've eaten at El Famous but today I had a taste for some non-fancy Mexican food. Sundays and Tuesdays they have $1.99 tacos and they are substantial. With 20 Mexican restaurants in the neighborhood, how did I pick the worst???? Customer service was not professional to me or the other customers. The quality of food is low compared to so many other places I've been to. The fresh nacho chips were not fresh and had no flavor. The pico de gallo and salsa were both terrible. My burrito was 85% lettuce, a few little pieces of not yet ripe tomato, chorizo which was more like ground pork with no flavoring, and Frijoles which will probably the lowest of the lowest quality. The bathroom was absolutely filthy, the toilet was and it did not flush, the garbage can was beyond overflowing, there were no paper towels. I strongly recommend you walk right past this place and go to any of the other Mexican joints in the neighborhood. read more

Big fan of El-Famous - no frills, good value and good food. Its the first time I've ever been - seems like I've passed by several of these restaurants in the past. I was hopping about Evanston and I just NEEDED some Mexican food. The Chips & Salsa cravings are real for me... Located on Clark St in Rogers Park - there seems to be plenty of Mexican eateries, but I chose El Famous. Talking to some NU students - they came here for the giant burritos. So off I went to seek it out. The menu is not huge - its rather simple compared to some other places that I've been to. What caught me is the value of the offerings. The regular burrito being $6.25 and an Enchilada meal being $8.00 + $1 for a drink -includes hortchata (Meals come with rice&beans) - that's pretty darn good there! Its not a huge restaurant - the walls are painted yellow (Personally I think the best Mexican joints are painted yellow for some reason). We walked in and just saw a bunch of happy folks really enjoying their food. We were seated provided menus and given a basket of chips and salsa. I really liked the spicier green salsa in the squeeze container. I usually just have steak as the protein for my burritos just to compare. And recently I've geared myself toward Enchiladas since its a bit more variety. I must say that the taste is better than other places that I've been to - seems like they season/marinate the steak more so than other places I've been. It really makes for a satisfying meal. I was largely full after splitting a regular burrito, while my kids split an enchilada platter - and my daughter did mention it was the best meal ever. Guess she likes mexican food, and I've now finally been to an El Famous. I parked in the neighborhood - which took me a bit longer than usual - meter spots are readily available on Clark St. Since its along the UPN Metra line - I think I may just make a quick stop on my way home from work to pick up some burritos for home in the future! This place is ok. The first time I went for an early lunch I got a pastor burrito no tomatoes or lettuce and added rice and sour cream. It was exactly what I wanted and really enjoyed it. Enjoyed it so much that I went back for dinner to get it again. When I got home to eat my burrito I quickly realized it was a carnitas burrito with fat tomato chunks all throughout. I'm not a huge fan of tomatoes so needless to say I was pretty disappointed. It's unfortunate because I thought I found a place I can hit regularly for a decent burrito but I guess this probably isn't the place. Hope to see more consistency moving forward. read more

My friend was in search of some Sunday evening budget-friendly tacos, and so we walked down Clark Street looking for the right place. Indeed this stretch of Clark Street in Rogers Park has a remarkable number of taquerias. At second glance, we walked into El Famous Burrito, which has a bit of a hole-in-the-wall appearance. So did a steady stream of customers, as I suppose quite a few locals dig the food here. We ordered our food to dine in, so we received a basket of free tortilla chips and salsa. I did not have any of it, as I was focused on my two tacos. The al pastor taco was pretty good, topped with onion and cilantro. A grilled chunk of pineapple was tucked inside, a nice touch for pineapple lovers. However the revelation for me was the chile relleno taco. Yes a breaded and stuffed pepper is the star of this taco, with a layer of rice and refried beans below and topped with lettuce and tomato. This was quite a hefty and satisfying taco considering that it is a meatless taco. My friend went with three steak tacos and enjoyed them too. I ordered a cup of horchata and it was just ok. Our entire order was barely $11, so indeed this was a budget-friendly taco experience (standard tacos cost only $1.50 each on Sundays and Tuesdays). read more

I wanted to try a new Mexican spot for lunch today. After a quick search, El Famous was chosen! I decided to call in and place an order for pick up. The male employee was even- toned and took my order clearly. I never tried lengua which is beef tongue but I saw great things about it ( on YouTube cooking channels lol). I went with a regular burrito with everything minus tomatoes! My burrito was stuffed. For about 9 bucks, I had a meal that's still sitting in my belly! Hahaha. The meal was super tender. I ordered the quesadilla (to share). It was very tasty. I added the chopped onions and cilantro, which gave it some extra zing. The quesadilla is cut into 6 pieces so easily shareable. It is served with seasoned rice and brown beans. These were both okay. What had a nice zing was the complimentary salsa on the table, served with nacho chips. The restaurant is quite small, holding approx. 30 patrons at its tables. What I did not like was that there was no printout out of the orders, only the credit card receipt. It is a very small (about 35 seats) restaurant. Nothing fancy, furniture a bit overdue but the food is fine. Waiter was fast and friendly. Water, chips with salsa were served right away. The salsa had a nice kick. I shared a quesadilla, cut up in 6 pieces it was easy sharable. It came with rice, beans and sour cream. Like I said, the food was good. I've always held this location in high regards until today. Never have I felt so disrespected and cut short of a proper delivery. I made a sizable order totaling 66.99 that totaled too 70 dollars. Don't get misunderstood the good Food is always good but the level of professionalism that led to me getting a receipt was null And void. I was told that no manager was on duty and the order taker was disrespectful challenging me even after explaining to him that I needed the receipt for business purposes the rep forced me into buying another taco in order to get the original receipt so almost 80 dollars was spent. I would like to speak with a manager until then I will be encouraging everyone I know to avoid your establishment.
