We absolutely love El Fenix!! This evening we decided to go back, the only difference was I had requested a good server... the Restaurant was a little busy, but were seated right away. No one came by for several minutes; so when the server finally came by, we said can we go ahead and order.. he took our order- drinks, queso, and dinner. After we placed our order, we sat there waiting. Meanwhile, they set another table of about six people right beside us. They brought us our drinks and eventually the queso ... but no chips. We flagged down someone walking by to request a beer and some chips. Goodness their queso is really good. Then, 20-25 min later, we watched that 6 top receive their food even though they sat down long after we ordered our food. We told the server we just wanted our check that we no longer wanted to wait for the meal. He mumbled something, pointed at the kitchen; then said OK and walked away. We also asked for a manager who quickly came over; we told her what had taken place and that we just asked for our check to pay for what we already had and we wanted to leave, we were tired of sitting there waiting for our food; just not worth waiting any longer. So we left! We will definitely be back. It's really a great restaurant with flavorful and authentic & fresh food! It would have been nice for Manager to check on customers; this could've been avoided. The only picture from this evening is the "queso no chips and no beer" picture.

Came here for lunch meeting. The food tasted good. The atmosphere was very authentic Texas-Mexican. The service could have been better. We wished the server would have written down our order so he would not have made mistakes. He did fix our order. Anyway, we would come back again.

We go to El Fenix every Wednesday night for enchilada special. It is delicious. We have a server that we ask for name Beto. He is awesome. Since we go every week, he has learned what we always ask for. He brings us our drinks and chips and our tortillas with butter that we asked for without even asking. We love this. He also knows our order because it's always the same, and that we like a to go box. This makes everything very efficient and fast. We can literally get in and out in 30 minutes. The restaurant itself is decorated ' Mexican style' as I would call it. Its very authentic and feel you're definitely having authentic Mexican food.

This is always a random craving for me. I love coming in to eat chips and salsa with queso and I always get my tortilla soup... minus the tortilla strips. It's comfort food at its finest and I always leave feeling like I could pop! Service is always so good and the servers are very polite. Never have to wait long if there is a wait. Typically around lunch time is when I go so it can get pretty busy. Came here for dinner tonight and not many people were there. The guacamole portion size on the queso combo was very very generous. My husband doesn't care for the food here but is sweet enough to go with my when I have the El Fenix itch! Be sure to sign up for their rewards program. You get a free guacamole and queso combo each year!

My wife and I have visited this El Fenix location 10 or so times and, for the most part, each time the service and food has been consistently good. Last evening, we took our daughter and grandchildren with us and again, the food was consistently good. The service, however, was great! Our server, Cerilio (I think was his name), was "on it!" like Donkey Kong!! Cerilio waited several other tables besides ours and he did exceptionally well, even despite our table being somewhat needy throughout the mealtime. And, were it not for some relatively minor food shortcomings I would have rated this visit five stars. Where our meal fell a bit short, was where it usually and "consistently" does, i. e., presentation and quantity. Were it not for these two factors this rating would have been five stars and this El Fenix location would be clobbering it. Most may say I am nitpicking but here are the issues I usually have with our dining experience at this El Fenix: - Crispy Beef Taco plated alongside some other meal element (in the case of my El Jefe, it was the rice) and what occurs is the bottom side of the taco becomes soggy, making it difficult to eat. But, as evidenced by the single taco ordered by our granddaughter, were the taco to be placed as upright as possible, against a small amount of lettuce, the taco would haves much better chance of remaining crispy on BOTH sides! - Enchiladas not containing enough ingredients. To me, it seems the enchiladas should have at least 50% more filling. This is especially the case with the ones filled with cheese and onions! - Large Guacamole Appetizer not containing enough avocado. There should be an OBVIOUS difference in the amount of product between the "Bowl" and "Cup" sizes and the Bowl and "Side" sizes, and simply there is a minute difference, but not enough to warrant the relative price differences. - Meals containing Fajita Beef not containing enough meat. My wife almost always orders a meal where the Star of the plate should be the fajita meat. At least that's our belief, since the names of the meals usually begin with the word "Fajita." But, almost always it is our opinions that there could and should be more meat! That's pretty much it as far as how, for me, the rating would easily go from four to five stars. As for other aspects of dining at this El Fenix, the bathrooms are normally clean and well stocked, with the only issue noted being the toilet in the men's restroom, which is sometimes clogged and is not firmly seated to the floor flange. It is likely in need of a new wax seal, is wobbly, and likely will begin stinking soon. The dining room is normally clean and the staff are 99% of the time friendly and eager to make the dining experience a good one. The frozen drinks are always well-made and the iced water and other soft drinks are fresh, tasty and completely lacking of any off-putting, moldy, slime in the ice machine smells. If you're looking for some pretty darn good Tex-Mex food, you really need look no further than El Fenix, for great Taste, good Service, good Quality, and great Value! The original El Fenix owned by the famous Martinez family is a shell of itself. When they sold out in 2008 change was immediate. The unique tortilla chips made on Harry Hines Blvd were discontinued. The hot sauce is a poor rendition. I've been a loyal customer since 1961 and must confess that I have become an infrequent diner. That being said today's enchilada dinner and tamales were very good. Another positive is the retention of the restaurant and it's contents adds to the feeling of home.( Nostalgia) Photos on the walls show the Martinez Brothers and famous Dallas Cowboys Roger Staubach- Bob Lilly! Being the oldest chain of Mexican restaurants in the US ( founded 1918 in Dallas) says much about the foundation of its food, culture, history,and beloved customers. Compared to other chains it still stands tall. If you like Tex - Mex eat here.

I was out running errands yesterday and had the hankering for some good Mexican food and just as I thought that I saw a sign for El Fenix. It is located right off of 75 in Plano. I had never been to this location so decided to give it a try. I was seated right away, was brought a menu, chips and iced tea very quickly. Server was attentive and brought everything I needed. I decided to order from the lunch menu, I went with sour cream sauce, rice and beans. I should have specified to bring the soup out first, both were sent out together. The cheese, rice, tortillas were served and a bowl and the broth came in a container that was poured over top. The soup had a good flavor but it was a bit cold. The enchilada rice and beans were good as well. The interior of the restaurant is pretty standard. They have a mural painted on the back wall, with traditional Mexican decor on the walls. There is a small bar tucked into the back and several rooms for dining. Overall, good experience.

It was good. Not great. Thought it was neat to see brisket burrito on the menu but it was not anything special but not bad. Salsa was not hot but was good. Carne asada quesadilla was really good! The waiter handed us a basket of treats after we were done eating and then we paid our bill and then the treats were on the bill for $9! That was a joke.. He acted like he was giving us something after dinner and then it showed up on our bill! Just for being sneaky I would NOT recommend it! Not to mention my burrito looks like an enchilada. I thought things were bigger in Texas? I could have gone to Taco Bell for this size burrito lol

Last night, I ordered 3 enchilada dinners, one each of Beef, Chicken, and Cheese. This is per the El Fenix website for To-Go Orders which states $5.99 Enchilada Dinners ALL DAY EVERY DAY (see my picture). This was going to be around $20 before tip. After driving 20 to pick up my order, the curbside attendant brought out my order and told me it was going to be $29.19. I told her what the special was on the website, again all day every day, and she told me that it must have been a "Facebook Special" that had expired(!). I again told her that it is on the El Fenix website, not Facebook. Again, she told me that ($29.19) was the price. This was ridiculous - completely ignored their posted price on the EF website, did not attempt to rectify THEIR ERROR!. BTW, I told her I would not be paying. read more

My family and I visited for the first time since living in Texas. I must say the service was fast, very friendly! Our servers Jose and Mary were very attentive and made sure we were comfortable! The salsa and chips were a big hit for my family, being from California I swear by the salsa provided in Mexican restaurants will determine how good the food will be. I got the ElJefe, my husband got the steak fajitas, my daughter got the tamale on the kids menu and my picky son got the chicken strips lol and ordered more before our departure. We had to get some salsa to go it was that good! We got some yummy treats afterwards. Thanks Mary and Jose for your great customer service! We will be back soon! Come for the food, not the ambiance. We stopped here on a Sunday night when the Cowboys were playing so naturally it was dead but thought it would be a little lively or the gam would be on in the background. Negative. It just gave me a case of the sads. Luckily their food is bomb and the chips and salsa cured my El Fenix depression. The staff was on it, chips and salsa refills galore and were quick with refills. We ordered queso and it tasted like something out of a can....when did that happen? Whenever I've had their queso in the past it has been wonderful! Tamale trio was on point and enough for two meals and Jesus was an awesome server. Other than that, I don't see myself coming back here to eat in, I will stick to catering and ordering to go. read more

One of my favorite Tex Mex places! Free chips and salsa (and the salsa is not as spicy as on the border). Lots of good vegetarian options, and they are good with substitutions. I always get the veggie enchiladas and swap the rice with the salad, and I've never gone wrong. The service is quick and the food arrives sizzling. Docking off a star because the salad could have been fresher and the tomatillo sauce could have more flavor. But overall, great texmex and there's a reason why this place is so packed all the time. Happy hour is 4-7 on weekdays with $4 margaritas. read more

This is a split review. The food was good. Not great; not bad, but pretty good. Three stars at least. The service was horrible. Minus 3 stars at least. When I arrived, I waited several minutes at the hostess station to be seated. Finally someone came over and I requested a table. He said they have no tables. I looked around and there were only 2 customers in the restaurant and many open tables. I pointed out that there were several tables and he finally asked me which one I wanted. The server came over a few minutes later and brought chips and salsa and took the order. A few minutes later he returned with the food. He walked off as I asked for silverware. We were never given silverware or napkins. I finally got silverware. He never returned to check on us even though my water glass was empty. Used to be my go to for great, quic Tex-Mex. No more. Called in order. Went to pick up. 15 minutes, not ready. 25 minutes, not ready. 33 minutes order came out. Got home: 1. Wrong food from what I ordered 2. Food ice cold (live 6 minutes away) 3. Enchiladas burned on bottoms- couldn't cut with knife Conclusion: they aren't paying people enough to stick around and are not adequately training new workers. Lots of other options. I'll use them. Yikes I thought the El Fenix in Grapevine was horrible...this one in Plano might've taken it to a whole new level. It honestly feels like unless you go to the Lemmon Ave or the Downtown Dallas location, you might as well not eat at El Fenix anymore. We came here today because it was close to some errands that we are running in the Plano area. Upon entering the restaurant we had to wait a few moments for someone to even acknowledge that we had arrived. Once we were seated our order was taken rather quickly but that was a long wait during a time that the restaurant was not busy. That is usually not a good sign and that was definitely not a good sign today. I ordered a create your own combo meal consisting of a sour cream and Chilada and two tacos. How do you get that wrong?It was absolutely horrible. We also ordered an appetizer platter and I could not believe how bad the chicken and beef flautas on it were. I am always amused by waitstaff Who see that you've barely eaten any of your food and do not even ask you if your meal was OK. When we checked out the cashier asked if everything was OK and I said that that would be a generous review. She did not ask anything further just said the amount that I owed. My personal advice would be to go to one of the many other Mexican restaurants around town. read more

Just left here and am extremely disappointed. Our waiter Jose lost my father in law's credit card, and just shrugged and said he couldn't find it. The manager Mary was dismissive and said, they looked for it but couldn't find it. We had to stop her to get her to discuss with us, she repeatedly ignored us even though we were standing in the middle of the restaurant, obviously needing assistance. These things happen, but it could have been handled with apologies and taking some initiative. She didn't even ask for his name and number in case they found it- we had to ask if she would write this down in case it turned up! We won't be back and we will certainly share this experience with others. read more

Met with some friends for dinner. Quickly seated at 6 pm on a Tuesday. Drink orders quickly taken and after 15 min, came back to get our food orders. I had the Tuesday Taco special of shredded Chicken, rice and black beans with a Sweet Tea. Everything was great and don't you really like it when they bring you a fresh drink before requesting it. That one came home with me. Haha. Service was awesome! Parking is easy in their large lot. COVID-19 protocols are being followed by all staff with masks, also wearing gloves as well. Sanitizing between customers also happening. read more

The best chips in town. But....take out chicken enchilada with sour cream sauce had hair IN twice in three weeks. I can deal with it once, but not twice- so I emailed them through their website, and there was no response at all. So I unsubbed from their emails and am leaving this review. A Restaurant that doesn't care about the customer's concerns us t going to make any positive changes. (Such as caps for kitchen staff). We'll still stop for chips and salsa, but buy our Tex-Mex food elsewhere. read more

El Fenix is the oldest Mexican chain in the United States. It was established in 1918 and from then on until this day the restaurant's decor may have changed over the years to keep up with Dallas modernization, the recipe stayed the same. The Martinez family really have taken good care of it. That's probably the major factor why they are still serving food, good food. I've lived in TX for more than 10 years now and yesterday was the first time I've dined in El Fenix. Chips and salsa were brought out and we went ahead and ordered a couple of their house margarita which have won 3 years in a row as best in Dallas. At my first sip of their famous (cheap $4.49) house margarita, I started questioning my self how in the hell I've never dined here before. It was refreshing and perfectly mixed. We then ordered food. I had the Blanco enchiladas topped with green chiles and they were awesome and not to forget the side Mexican rice. It was one of the best I've had. I will definitely come back for the Rita's and to try other food items in their menu. Lastly, service was great and fast. read more

Weird experience from start to finish. Walked in and the hosting situation was bizarre. Seemed to be confusion between the hostess and manager about which 8 party was there to be seated. Our party of two and another party stood there mostly unacknowledged. We were sat right away which seemed to be part of the problem. Initial service was fine and no real issues. Manager came to take our order as it seemed maybe the waitress was getting behind. However, she went from our order and rushed to seat more people that they clearly couldn't service in a timely fashion. Queso was super bland but edible with the addition of some salsa for flavor. Our meals came out with only 1 mistake which we were unable to even ask about as the manager dropped our plates and ran to ring out customers. Meanwhile we were out of water and I wanted a Diet Coke. I walked to the bar area to see if there was a water pitcher as we had waited so long I was too thirsty to start eating. I was able to walk around and find our waitress to ask for water. Food was fine. I think there is obviously a market for bland mexican food as they had plenty of business, but I would rather go to a hole in the wall taqueria or even Rosa's has more flavor. Table behind us asked to take their food to go because they waited so long. First time at El Fenix and definitely my last. Bottom line is food was mediocre at best, service was lousy, and it clearly has ongoing management issues as a read a review similar to mine from 5 months ago. Dont waste your money here. read more

I was excited to try this place since being new to the area. I figured with 100 years of experience that it would be amazing....but it wasn't. The food was decent but the service was poor. The waitress was not friendly and would disappear for 5-10 minutes at a time and you could never find her. And that was before we even ordered. I will say that the chips were amazing and so was the smoked queso so that is what's giving this 3 stars. Overall if you go don't expect much and you'll be fine. Pro tip: Be sure to get the sampler if you aren't sure what to get as an app. It's good to share and will give you an idea of what to get again if you ever come back. read more

Ate an early dinner here today with my brother. Arrived around 5:30 and was seated immediately. Fresh chips and salsa arrived within a few minutes. Love those chips! I was back in Texas after a long absence and needed a genuine TexMex fix. I ended up at El Fenix with some local friends. The food hit the spot. The chips are excellent and we ate a lot of them. The salsa is a bit bland and I would have preferred more spice, however. I had a Patron margarita which was a generous pour and was excellent. I wanted to try everything so I got the El Fenix dinner which had a crispy taco, two tamales, a cheese enchilada, guacamole, and the usual beans and rice. This was a lot of food (I like the fact that they list the calories in each offering but I exceeded my daily limit with this dinner). Service was very good. We had no room left for desert. Prices are moderate. Service was excellent. All in all a nice experience and I would return. read more

Without exception, this specific Plano location in our opinion is the most consistent, BEST El Fenix there is anywhere!! We moved about 2 hrs from the metroplex so have come to appreciate it even more now that our weekly visits aren't possible! Their food is so delicious that we compare all Mexican food to theirs and it seems no one else can quite measure up! Dang, our waitress most of the time, is so considerate and friendly! Normally I am a huge El Fenix fan. However today's lunch experience today was really bad. We didn't have a server until after we had sat down for 15 minutes. Meanwhile subsequent diners got drinks and chips and placed their orders. Okay, so we thought maybe it was because they were just busy. When we finally did order, the food was not good (crunchy tacos were soft). We had to ask the bus boy for drink refills as we never saw a server again. Fortunately we live in Texas and there are no shortage of great Tex-Mex restaurants. I'm just sorry this location has removed from our list..... Been going down since the sale. Today, Sunday, arrived at about 4 pm, country music playing so loud in the lobby that we could not understand hostess.(Yep Country Music, thought for a few minutes we were in the wrong place). Obvious no Manager was on duty. Employees arrived and put their ties and aprons on in the dinning room, never seen that before. Food was Luke warm. The food here is always good and fresh and I am never disappointed about the taste or quality of the food. Where I made my mistake this time was ordering delivery. Anytime you order delivery you are going to get screwed. I am kicking myself for not taking a picture of this so you could see it for yourself. (what was I thinking?) I ordered the appetizer of hot cheese dip and guacamole combo with chips. When I opened it up and saw there was only a few chips I was very surprised. Typically you get more chips than you can eat. I had only ordered the one meal, so it was just me, so it is not like I was feeding an army over here. I had finished the chips off and still had a lot of cheese and guacamole leftover. When you have splurged on takeout/delivery for one meal, an appetizer, tip 20% spend $45 it is a huge disappointment. The food is pretty good. Not too crazy about their queso (that's how I judge a good Mexican restaurant). Its a cheap queso, like it started with a flour and butter roux instead of it being really cheesy. Kind of a gelatin like consistency rather than smooth and creamy. Anyway, besides that the food is pretty good. My company eats there for lunch every Friday and about 90% of the time there is a mistake in the order, but its always fixed (even though its an inconvenience). From the minute I get into the place I was completely ignored I sat down waiting at least 10 minutes for a server to approach me food was average service was terrible and when I asked for a manager That was a complete disaster because she didn't speak English Avoid this place at all cost read more

German Cockroaches ran across my table during dinner. I saw another review 2 days ago same thing. The place is crawling with roaches. Will not return.. The manager Toni blamed it on the pest company. He should realize the problem is a unsanitary dirty environment. read more
