Today, Sunday, arrived at about 4 pm, country music playing so loud in the lobby that we could not understand hostess.(Yep Country Music, thought for a few minutes we were in the wrong place). We live within 3 miles of this location on Hwy 183. We go there often. Chips came stale. We asked for fresh chips and waitress brought more and said they were same chips. Then, I order new Riley tacos. They were so chewey, you could not get them chewed up. Had to leave meat on plate. Ask for Mgr, lady came and apologized and took ticket. Waitress came back with ticket with $2 off. You couldn't even eat them. Oh well, we still had to pay for tacos of lettuce tomato and onion. $16.00! We won't be returning. AWESOME -I love El Fenix. I've been going here my whole life starting with the original one in downtown Dallas. The one in Plano is up to par. I went on Valentine's with my two boys after going to a viewing in Richardson. The place was packed but their wasn't a wait. I was very excited because I figured on Valentine's there would be no way I would find a place to eat in a reasonable amount of time. They chips are crispy and light and the salsa is flavorful with a good amount of heat. I joined The El Fenix Club so I received a free chips and queso on this visit. I ordered beef anchos and shared it with my sone. The meat was flavorful and the beans were cooked to perfection. The wait staff was attentive especially being it was a busy night. The restaurant is clean, but the decor is dated, but thats okay because it has always looked that way. read more

El Fenix is the classic in Tex Mex, and it's pretty hard to go wrong here. When my family and I visited last Saturday, the restaurant was a little quiet, but we were quickly seated and our waitress Amanda was with us fast. She provided excellent service the whole time through the meal. I ordered my usual fajitas and they were out fast! As for how they were, they were great, everything was fresh, and exactly what I'd expect from El Fenix. The prices are also very affordable for the portions served, and no matter what you order you'll leave full. At this particular location payment is taken at the table, though do note the restaurant does sell chips(100% worth buying) among other things, but you will need to ask to have it put on the ticket before leaving if you'd like to buy them and they'll be brought to the table. We went to a 6:15 movie and were really hungry when we got out at 9:45. We wanted good Mexican food so our first thought was El Fenix. Great Tex Mex! The chips and salsa are super. Lite crisp chips that have kind of a frito flavor. The salsa is VERY good. Nice and fresh, garlic-ey. YUM! My husband says it needs more heat. I say nope, it's just right. I have been trying something different each time we visit. This time it was fish tacos. I would get them again. Their rice and charro beans are super yummy as well. My husbands brisket enchiladas were DElicious! OHH! I can't forget about the margarita on the rocks. They make the best margaritas. Our server was a really good. Very nice and attentive...lovable lady. The manger was walking around checking on everyone and stopped to talk with some familiar older folks. Nice man. Dinner was okay. Nothing outstanding or memorable. Nothing bad. Just acceptable. Chicken tortilla soup was average. A little salty, but flavorful. Always like the avocado. Serving sizes were plentiful. The Monterey special (3 tostadas) were good flavor but, beans are now off. They have gone back to making the refried beans with lard again. Warning! We ordered through Doordash the morning of Cinco de Mayo for pick up that evening at 6. My husband got there at 6 and it was packed outside understandably. Long story short, he waited over an hour because no one could find our order!! I called the restaurant a few times as he waited outside and it rang and rang and no one ever picked up. Horrible service. He spoke to the manager who never once offered any sort of apology. They threw in a jar of salsa and queso. Met up with a couple of friends for lunch today. I haven't been to this location in years. They choose so we went here. They had a good amount of guest eating lunch today. We were seated pretty quickly. The chips were warm salsa was ok not spicy at all. We ordered. I had the Mexican Dinner Special. My friends ordered A Bowl of Tortilla Soup and the other had the Enchilada Dinner. Took a little while, the food came out warm not very hot at all. The food was good not very spicy as I remember. Have been enjoying El Fenix in Plano for years. Usually take advantage of the Wednesday Enchilada specials, but last week we decided to venture to El Fenix on another evening. BIG MISTAKE. They had limited wait personnel that evening, maybe 2 people attempting to wait on everyone that evening. More bus staff then wait staff. Their kitchen staff may have also been short, as I ordered the Veggie Enchilada plate, the food was not even hot, the plate was cold to the touch. This was not the first time that we have received food that was cold. By the time that you can get the wait staff back to your table to tell them about how cold the food is they don't want to believe you because it has been so long since you have been served. I don't like the taste of Plano water, so I always request "lemons" to drown out the chemical taste of the city water, I order the them when I place my request for the water, I requested it again when the wait staff served the water and when he brought out the appetizer that we had requested. Surprise I never received the lemon, I would have requested limes if I thought they would have served them. The manager could not be found, usually one of the shift managers are around in sight, but since they have done away with the cashier and the wait staff is the cashier also you don't see the shift manager at all anymore. The wait staff being a cashier, is hopeless, they don't have the machines that will print your receipt at the tables, the wait staff has to retrieve the receipt which means more of a wait. Since restaurants have opened up again, there has been such a decline in most of them, the food quality and the service have all deteriorated so drastically, I don't think the food industry will ever really recover. Maybe it is because we can get food delivered faster than we can get it served in the restaurant itself. The atmosphere is much more pleasant, seats covers are not torn, tables not wobbly. El fenix used to be our favorite take out. HOWEVER, over the last 6 months the portions have been getting smaller and smaller. Our favorites were the enchiladas. Now I don't think there's even 1 oz of filling in each one. Side orders of guacamole have also become very much smaller. Twice we have received enchiladas that were empty....hollow!! Ordered online. Ordered chicken tacos but found out when I got home that they put in beef. I also ordered the guacamole queso combo that comes with a spicy queso (so good). The guacamole was missing and the queso was a plain queso. I went back and they fixed the chicken and guacamole but said they now changed the queso to plain queso. I am annoyed that they didn't change the price or anything on the menu but it's now different. The girl up front was really nice and she took care of the mistake really quickly. Ordered the special Fiesta Burritos and were quite disappointed. There is very little meat inside and it was overfilled with rice and beans. So basically you get a double order of rice and beans with a few tiny hunks of meat. I have been an El Fenix customer for over 40 years. My wife and I have been to very few dine in restaurants since the pandemic. All except this El Fenix have practiced proper protocols. The tables were close enough that I could touch them. When we arrived I thought that they would seat every other table. As more customers arrived they filled the tables. A large family arrived and they seated 8 at one table right next to us and another right behind us of 5. We got up and left our meal complained to the hostess at the front counter and she said ... "this is the way the owners want to do this ... we do not have any choice" We have a choice. read more
